Re: My download is extremely slow, but my ADSL Is not so

2018-06-12 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Actually, 10 MB is rather slow. Go to fast.com on the web and see how fast it
believes your download speed is. You may also wish to try www.speedtest.net.
Just as a reference, I tend to get anywhere between 120 and 150 MB/s at home
for download with about 15 MB/s upload. At work, I usually get 200 to 300
download and 200 to 300 upload. So, 10 MB/s is extremely slow in my world.
Also, it should be noted that the device that is at the other end also affects
your download speed. So, if you have 10 MB/s download and the device your
downloading from has 100 MB/s upload, if they have multiple people downloading
at the same time, this bandwidth is divided up between all the downloaders.
Theres a lot of factors that can make it so that you don't get your optimum
download speed. There's really nothing you need to do to your settings that
can affect this.

RE: Once and for all, is there a darned thing I can do to stop all my web browsers from the "busy" refrain?

2018-06-12 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries
It’s happening under both Chrome and Safari for me – Macbook Pro (late 2013
model), 8GB RAM, running High Siera.

I’ve reported it to Apple and to Google. I would suggest that others do
likewise. With sufficient reports, Apple should be able to find the common
factors and discover the cause, if they aren’t aware of it already.

For me, it’s a major performance problem on the Mac.

Interestingly, a colleague with a more recent MacBook Pro was unable to
reproduce the issue.

I'm believing for a mac pro or Imac pro to circumnavigate this very annoying

I find it rears its ugly "busy" head most when I set a bunch of hotspots in Pro

Hi,

This is caused usually by sites that have a lot of content and complicated

toggle VO off, wait a few seconds then turn it back on. Other times, I press
tab to start bringing focus into the web area and it just continues to buffer
but I can still get places in the web area. Overall, it kind of depends on the
amount of memory and processing power that your Mac has along with how good the

Re: Once and for all, is there a darned thing I can do to stop all my web browsers from the "busy" refrain?

2018-06-12 Thread Eric Oyen
I see this on a lot of websites on my high Sierra system here (Mac mini with 8
GB ram). It happens in chrome, safari and even Firefox. I have even tried
comparison runs on my windows machine concurrent (windows 7 using jaws) and it
seems that the website coding is a bit more Microsoft centric (sites appear to
load faster and neither jaws or NVDA seem to have the same issues).

And yes, 1 of the biggest issues always has to deal with Javascript.

Re: Once and for all, is there a darned thing I can do to stop all my web browsers from the "busy" refrain?

2018-06-12 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Are people experiencing this issue running under High Sierra? I can
consistently get my El Capitan system to go into busy state from the link list
menu, but my HS system generally works except for sites that like to move
content around the screen constantly. One other possibility is to bring up the
developer menu and try turning off JavaScript some web sites will gracefully
downgrade to a more client server functionality when there is no JS others will
not load at all. But you should not have issues with JavaScript tools changing
the DOM out from under VoiceOVer causing VoiceOver to ask the browser where am
I again and again?

I believe that the Sierra based VO does a better job at ignoring things that
don’t have focus of one kind or another, until it needs to look at them.

Hi,

That might make the keyboard even pricier than it is. The TouchBar has an OLED
display and has some extra features that would be challenging to implement in
an external device. Certainly not impossible, but challenging.

I’m actually a bit surpriced that the touchbars haven’t made it into the magic
keyboard for the mac.
I wonder if they will come.

Laptops: When did things change?

2018-06-12 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Anyone recall when it was that Apple removed the physical function keys
and replaced them with the touch sensitive strip? Put differently, what
models were the last to have physical keys?

Similarly, what models were the last to have the chime on boot?

I recognize this is somewhat of an oddball question, but if anyone
recalls any of these details, I'd be most grateful.

Take your pick of any common web site, and it happens: Amazon, Netflix,
government web sites, news sites, commercial sites. I changed preferences as
suggested, and now it keeps saying “loaded” as I read the page.

 Hi,

This is caused usually by sites that have a lot of content and complicated
coding. Sometimes, I just cmd-tab out of Safari, then do something for a
few seconds, then cmd-tab back into Safari and things are better. Other
times, I toggle VO off, wait a few seconds then turn it back on. Other
times, I press tab to start bringing focus into the web area and it just
continues to buffer but I can still get places in the web area. Overall,
it kind of depends on the amount of memory and processing power that your
Mac has along with how good the web-site coding is.

Hi,

Try going into VO Utility, Web, then Page Loading tab. Uncheck both items in
there and change the "While Loading" menu to "Do Nothing".

Also, could you send an example link of one of the sites that gives you grief?
I'd like to see how it behaves for me.

Re: Turn built-in trackpad off.

2018-06-12 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I'm wondering if in your second user, you have mouse keys enabled. I'm
certainly not disputing that your Trackpad is disabled in the second user, but
I don't know of any setting in 10.11.* to turn off the Trackpad either. I
don't believe that you'll find such a setting even if you downgrade. Mouse
Keys will do this, but does cause other issues, as in re-mapping keys so that
typing letters such as u i o is a problem.

I'm wondering if you went into VO Utility, Navigation, and set it so that the
mouse ignores the VO cursor. This may make the Trackpad less responsive to
your accidental touches.

Hi Tim,
I fully understand and agree, however, things get even more strange. I have
never used any “mouse” or “trackpad” with my “MacBook Pro” other then the
built-in one.
On the “MacBook Pro” which I have just upgraded to “OS X 13.5” from “OS X 11”,
I have two users.
User One; I turned “trackpad” off when I was still running “OS X 11” about two
years ago, and it is still off.
User Two; I used mainly for trying things out, so I never turned the “trackpad”
off, but now that my usage has or is changing, I tried to turn the “trackpad”
off and found I cannot.
So my question is “double edged” where would I find the toggle to turn on or
off the “trackpad”? or will I have to go back to “OS X 11”?

2018-06-12 Thread CHUCK REICHEL
Hi Tim,
I and several other Avid Pro Tools beta testers are getting the dreaded "SWOD"
spinning wheel of death "busy" issue.
We've got it down to the Video card in the mac mini and any other "slower"
video card macs use.
I'm believing for a mac pro or Imac pro to circumnavigate this very annoying
issue.
I find it rears its ugly "busy" head most when I set a bunch of hotspots in Pro
Tools then close that window then the SWOD starts and I go through all your
steps Tim to calm it down.
Not a very nice thing when doing a mix session with a client sitting next to
me! :(

Hi,

Hmmm. I don't experience that sort of thing. I do have 16 GB of RAM with a
3.1 GHz processor though, so I would reaffirm that if you're only running with
4 GB of RAM with a MacBook Air, you're going to experience this more often.

I switched to Chrome to avoid this garbage, but it is doing the same thing,

2018-06-12 Thread Christine Grassman
Yes, I used to have luck with these suggestions most of the time, but it
happens persistently now, no matter what the site, and with chrome as well. It
says busy, and/or freezes until I move to another application, and not until
the computer seems to “hiccup” and say “VoiceOver on” can I attempt doing
something with the browser again, which usually pulls the same thing over and
over until I give up.

Re: Turn built-in trackpad off.

2018-06-12 Thread Stan ZA
Hi Tim,
I fully understand and agree, however, things get even more strange. I have
never used any “mouse” or “trackpad” with my “MacBook Pro” other then the
built-in one.
Cheers
Stan ZA

If you're primarily using it on your desk at work, you could set up an external
keyboard via Bluetooth or USB.

Subject: thoughts re new Mac Book Pro purchase

Hi List,

My employer is looking at purchasing me a new Mac Book Pro for work.

So I'm looking at the pricing of both the 13" MBP with touch bar and without.

There are obviously some benefits wih the touch bar version, such as able to
have a faster processor,
4 USB-C ports,

But possible downfalls are the keyboard and the touch bar.

Where as the non touch bar version onlhy has the 2 USB-C ports, Slower
processor range,

And downfall the keyboard is that butterfly type.

What I'd really like to know is if anyone on the list is using the touch bar
model 13" with windows either in bootcamp or VM environment and if so how well
if at all does the touch bar work with windows

Cheers for any info you can provide.

RE: iphone se first generation running on the latest ios?

2018-06-12 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries
My iPhone 5S works well with IOS 11.4 - and it's older than the SE.
Interactions with VoiceOver are quite responsive, but loading applications can
take a while (probably due to the fairly limited 1GB of RAM that it has, if I
remember correctly).

Re: Once and for all, is there a darned thing I can do to stop all my web browsers from the "busy" refrain?

2018-06-12 Thread David Chittenden
