Mark,
Then there is iPadOS which will be very interesting to hear about.
My iPad mono 4 is not supported so all can do is watch from the sidelines.

Are you using iPad-specific apps such as Skype for iPad?

Everyday tasks that few people do anymore because of technology, USA Today

Hello Everyone,

Since many of the items on this list involve iOS, I thought I'd post it here

Everyday tasks that few people do anymore because of technology, USA Today

Phone book, what's a phone book? 20 everyday tasks that nobody does anymore

Kim Komando | Special to USA TODAY Updated 6 hours ago
USA TODAY
Daily necessities are vanishing one by one, thanks to new and efficient
technology. Stamps, maps and cookbooks still exist, but we hardly ever need
them. Why place a personals ad when you can just "swipe left?"
The standard electronics, gear and ways of yesteryear have vanished as if it
was never invented at all. As old formats disappear, that leaves us with the
task of what to do with our memories.
Even services that seem new are vanishing in the name of progress; Apple is
killing off iTunes, for example. and here's what it means to your music and
movies.
Here are some rituals that are no longer required in many households. If
you're 40 years or older, you'll probably smile with nostalgia. Share this
list on social media. Others will enjoy this trip down memory lane too!

1.
Memorize a phone number
Pop quiz: How many phone numbers do you know by heart? Some people don't
even know their spouse's numbers. How times have changed. Now, you tell your
smart assistant to call someone in your contacts, or you touch their name on
your phone.
The earliest cellphones required you to transfer your entire directory by
hand, from the old unit to the new one; now, with cloud technology, your
contacts are automatically downloaded.
What happens if you lose your phone, say, at a Disney theme park? This
couple got separated and turned to Facebook for help.

2.
Use a phone book to find a company to do work around your house
Generation Z may not even know what "Yellow Pages" refers to. They may not
have ever seen a phone book.
Online consumer services like Angie's List and Yelp have made finding
service people easy, plus you can read other users' ratings. One of the
newer ways to find ultra-local services is Nextdoor, which has a special
section for "recommendations," along with crime watches and other local
info.

3.
Sell your car with a cardboard sign stuck on the windshield
Unless you're selling your vehicle to someone you know and trust, these
transactions can get sticky and even a little dangerous, especially with all
the trolls. Craigslist started more than 20 years ago, and it's still going
strong, although it, too, still suffers from trolls and weirdos. If you want
to sell your car, here are three sites that may be better than Craigslist.

4.
Figure out math in your head
Few of us ever carried calculators with us to the grocery store. In
contrast, pretty much everyone with a smartphone uses it to do basic
calculations, no matter where or when you need it. In fact, you don't even
have to jab numbers anymore, physical or virtual: Tell Siri to solve a math
problem, or command Alexa to do that pesky long division for you, along with
countless other handy skills.

5.
Call and ask a family member, "Where are you?"
Find My Friends changed the family-safety landscape by geographically
connecting iPhone users. This app was a life-saver for parents with kids,
adults taking care of aging parents, and countless others. Phone Tracker is
a free app for iPhone and Android-powered phones that not only tracks
location but also messaging and web activity.

6.
Tell time by hands on a clock
Like cursive writing, analog clocks may be teetering on extinction. Few
people with smartphones bother with watches anymore, unless they're fashion
statements or fitness trackers. With digital clocks dominating our computers
and hardware, those 12-numeral timepieces may become pure novelties.
Even your trusted alarm clock has received a tech makeover. Click or tap for
three apps that monitor your sleep cycle, and wake you up when you'll feel
the most rested.

7.
Make photo albums
It's hard to imagine printing an image at a one-hour photo store, taking
back your packet of 4x6 snapshots, and then meticulously pasting them into a
faux-leather photo album. Given the ease of digital photography, and the
innumerable images you could produce on a regular day, you'd fill up entire
shelves in no time.
Photo-sharing services like Flickr and Amazon Cloud and have existed for
some years, and now some apps will help you organize your photos and
keepsakes, some of them from well-known companies like CVS and Walgreens.

8.
Have a CD or record collection
Wasn't it cool back in the day to walk into a shabby-chic apartment and see
those shelves of CDs? Wasn't it a joy to flip through boxes of vinyl
records? Napster was the first sign that music could exist as a tiny,
virtual MP3 file, and then iPods basically dealt the death blow.
Today, music exists as a digital index on a screen. Purists may love their
turntables, but CDs have probably gone the way of the wax cylinder.

9.
Make mixtapes
There was something so special about a

Best way to get gmail and apple mail to work together in the best way possible.

2019-06-13 Thread matthew dyer
Hi all.

I am just wondering what the best way to get mail to work offisionetly with
gmail. I have things set for the default behavior with the only exception
being that archived messages go to an archive folder. I use several devices
most of which use imap. Is there anything ddifferent either on the gmail side
or in mail itself I should change. I see in gmail settings an option to turn
off auto expunge. What is the difference between having this on or off? If
there is anything else I should do, I would like to know. Thanks.

Matthew

Re: New router or not?

2019-06-13 Thread 'Sabahattin Gucukoglu' via MacVisionaries
It depends how you’ll use your AirPorts.

You can turn them into bridges, which means they extend a wireless network
using Ethernet or wireless. To be honest though, this is mesh network
territory, and unless you have a particularly ingrained fetish for speed and
will use Ethernet exclusively as I do, then anything else is preferable, even
using your power lines for networking such as HomePlug adaptors. I have had
no experience with any particular vendors' mesh products.

Extreme, Time Capsule, and Express do offer network services. Time Capsule, of
course, can expose a networked disk; this is still useful, if slow. Both
Extreme and Time Capsule will expose a disk over USB 2.0 through the included
port, though even more slowly. AirPort Express, of course, can be used for
AirPlay. All of the devices can share a printer to the network, except that
most printers nowadays are already networked. The devices are all capable of
joining your network as a wireless client for these purposes, or you can bridge
it using Ethernet, and simply turn the Wi-Fi off, just as you would any other
peripheral.

Finally the Express has a very unique feature: it can join a wireless network,
in client mode as before, and can then proxy Ethernet devices onto it by
emulating wireless stations on their behalf. In this way it becomes a kind of
portable Ethernet jack, for those stations that don't have wireless, like my
very old BrailleNote Apex that can't reach the 5 GHz band. But naturally this
is a very unusual need, and there are already extender products on the market
that do a very similar thing without the added expense and with modern AC Wi-Fi
or power line networking.

Hope this helps.

Re: New router or not?

2019-06-13 Thread 'Kawal Gucukoglu' via MacVisionaries
I have been reading about the new router is in the Apple Store. I am thinking
of getting one of these when I get a new iMac around Christmas time. Out of
interest has anybody been using the new wireless meshes and are they
accessible?

As far as I know, you cannot change those apps, like mail, that have the two
side-by-side panes. Split screen is optional. But that set up is not.

iTunes reports busy in Sierra

2019-06-13 Thread 'Andrew Lamanche' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

For a few days now, if I launch iTunes, it opens but it reports constantly busy
and I have to force quit it. I am still on Sierra. What can have gone wrong,
and how can I fix it? Is there & where a plist I could try and discard?

Re: Using My iPad, More and More

2019-06-13 Thread Petrus Tuerlings
How does one turn off the split screen on the iPad? I hate the split screen and
hardly ever use the iPad except to check for the updates for my wife. She is
sighted and also hates the split screen. I’ve had a look in settings but
couldn’t find where to turn it off.

Re: New router or not?

2019-06-13 Thread 'Sabahattin Gucukoglu' via MacVisionaries
I still use a Time Capsule, but in bridged mode for exclusive use as a wireless
access point, with my own Linux box as router doing PPPoE to a VDSL modem. This
overcomes the chief limitation of the device, which is translation speed beyond
about 300 MB/s. My bandwidth does not yet exceed 80 down 20 up yet, though, so
this is not needed for simple Ethernet connections and if I had cable I would
still be using TC exclusively. Wireless coverage in my flat isn’t the issue:
the TC works great even at 5 GHz and in fact disabling the 2.4 GHz band
actually makes things better where I am, in London, where the 2.4 GHz band is
completely and totally choked.

My biggest gripe with current consumer stuff is it’s all pretty dire in terms
of flexibility and security. Running your own box overcomes that but it’s not
for the faint of heart. However, even I will eventually need a new access
point, and in that case I will probably just go with the Netgear Nighthawk. My
only gripe about that is it doesn’t let you use multiple VLANs when it is in
bridge mode, so you can’t run your own custom guest network or hotspot, which
is something I’ve always wanted to do but probably never will, LOL.

It seems to me that if iPhone got keyboard shortcuts then many of the supposed
advantages of the iPad would disappear. I had avoided iPad specifically because
of the split-screen app layouts that I do not like very much, but perhaps this
is just another inevitable that I have to face.

However, as time has passed I have discovered that I prefer performing some
tasks on iPad more than on iPhone.

For example, I definitely enjoy using Twitter, Facebook and other social
media such as Yelp on iPad, especially in conjunction with the Apple Smart
keyboard. Also, the TV Guide Mobile app is fabulous on iPad.

Apps such as Skype work well on iPad and I love the larger display as it
brings video calls up close and personal.

While I continue to listen to audio book, primarily on iPhone, I enjoy
reading eBooks on iPad with the larger display.

The battery power is so much better on iPad than on iPhone that I delegate
more battery draining tasks to iPad.

My point is that while there is some cross-over between iPad and iPhone, I
am definitely finding a groove for both in my digital online world.

Are there some tasks you prefer on iPad rather than iPhone?

I look forward to all replies.

Hi Mary,

I've got a Sonos Play Bar,
It's a few years old now and I don't have any issues with the voiceover voice
being cut off from my apple tv,
This may well be due to my sound bar being connected to my tv using an optical

That way everything comes through the tv first and as I've switched the tv
speakers off the sonos play bar and surrounds play the related audio.

Hope that helps.

Subject: Encrypt.me accessibility update

Hi,

I’ve posted before about VPN app called encrypt.me & its
accessibility. I shared my communication with the developer, Terry Myers,
who’s been very helpful & understanding of our needs. Following his & his team
commitment to improve accessibility of encrypt.me apps on
all platforms, he’s just updated me by saying the following;
"The next release going into QA has a slightly improved accessibility feature.

You'll be able to enable/disable Encrypt.me using Siri, on
iOS & Mac.

Monochrome is coming - we're going to work on that along side the new dark mode
in iOS13.”

Encrypt.me applications are available for iOS, Android, mac
platforms. In fact, I have iOS versions & mac apps and they are fairly
accessible anyway but I thought I’d make Terry aware that we exist and that it
is important to keep us in mind, and his response was tremendously positive.
Encrypt.me is a subscription VPN but it’s fairly affordable.

I have one sitting on an antenna in my living room.
It was sitting above my house giving a wider signal over the neighbourhood
Made it easy surfing the net using my own wifi when in a café 50 or so meters
away.

You definitely should consider a new router. I looked it Manny and went with he
ubiquityAmplifi HD. It supports very high speeds it’s a quality router and for
a good price. And you do all of its set up and control via an iPhone app. Or
web interface but I haven’t tried that. There are many good routers on the
market right now. For me I just felt this was the best mix of features, price,
and from a company that has a very good track record and producing commercial
Wi-Fi equipment.

RE: New router or not?

2019-06-13 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Anders,

I'm not really an apple router fan but I'm not saying they are bad or otherwise,
May be slightly out dated,

In saying that I used an airport express before getting my netgear nighthawk
router
I find it's interface great to use and accessible from my iPhone or iPad
through the nighthawk app
Very accessible with voiceover
Oh and windows if you need it.

They have a number of different devices,
Mine is an R8000 I think it is, I've kind of just ignored the model now as it's
just sitting and working as it needs to.

 4 antenna
4 ethernet pors on the back and a USB port on the front for connection of god
knows what.
I've never used the USB for anything,

The device also has OpenVPN built in and very simple to use / setup for anyone
that wishs to have a secure log in and connection back to your own home via VPN

As I said, there is a range of nighthawk devices and the ones I looked at can
do giga bit wired and ac wifi
I rate them as a device to buy but really it's up to you.

If you had the money and it's avaible in swedan then I'd say look at the R9600
I think it is which was the top of the line device when I was looking,
It is well over spec'd for new Zealand with WiFi AD
And things that probably only a business would use.

Hope that helps and good luck.

Hi!
We’re getting fibre connection at 1000 Mbit here in my apartment and i want to
make use of that as much as possible.
So i will be connecting my airport extreme to the new connection.
However i am wondering if the airport extreme is out of date as a good router
and if i should get me a new one instead?
If i get a new router then support for OpenVpn is a must.
So i ask if someone here can give me some advice?
Thanks in advance.
Note that the interface for a new router of course has to be VoiceOver friendly.
The airport utility is one of the best i’ve seen so far.
I know that there are routers with Unix interfaces, but any tips are welcome.

Thanks.

RE: new mac books

2019-06-13 Thread Simon Fogarty
Yeah that's true,

Except for the current situation where I've completely deleted the OS from the
ssd and it's now not talking to me.

I believe this might be due to file volt which was installed the first time I
set it up before wiping it to install Mojave latest os version.
Oh well gives me something to play with at work tomorrow.

Re: Using My iPad, More and More

2019-06-13 Thread Jürgen Fleger
Hi Mark,

same happened to me more or less. I love my iPad more and more too. And I
beliefe it will even increase when iPad OS will bring more and more useful
functions to iPads. A while further it might even replace the Mac for nonne
power users.

I like to accomplish some tasks better than on my iPhone XS like writing diary,
using meditation apps because of the better sound quality, Safari because of
the Smart Keyboard, RSS reading and some more. But I like audio books and
e-books still better on my iPhone.

I hope Apple will fix some VO bugs like reading lines not correctly while
navigating through a text in word processing apps using arrow down or up. And I
hope they will find a solution for CMD. Often times it happens while holding
down a VO key combination in in combination with CMD that the extra window
appears which shows the short cuts for each app.

All the best
Jürgen
