Re: net gear routers

Hi,

If you get the R7000 or R8000, you can slap DD-WRT on it. VoiceOver works
quite well with that.

Thanks,

Hey everyone. Was wondering if anyone on here has played with net gear
routers and if so, how accessible is the web interface? I know linksys
routers work really well. On the other hand, my girl friend has a d-link
router and it's awful, none of the links are labeled so I always have to
ask voiceover to give me the URL for each link.

The only way so far guys, for Spotify to run on the desktop is if you have
the premium subscription and can use the connect menu. You choose your
computer from the list and it sends all control to the Mac or Pc app.
However, if you perform searches or playlist stuff, you have to interface
it through the app but you can stream it through the computer
independently through their connect menu. Hope this helps and possibly
clears some things up. Take care and talk to you soon. PS, I used it for a
while but ended up going back to iTunes Radio because I don’t have to work
at it so hard to get what I want out of it, just a little tweaking here
and there and I can get all I want and more, plus I can interface it from
anything I use from the apple Tv, to my mac, iPhone and iPad. Thanks and
take care. Talk to you soon.

Re: Mail Apps

2014-07-11 Thread Blake Sinnett

Hi,

You might find this crazy, but switch to Microsoft's email at outlook.com.
It's what I use, and I really like it a lot. It supports Exchange
ActiveSync, which is the absolute best protocol to support, IMO. It also
supports IMAP and I think POP3, but don't quote me on that. I would never
choose to get locked in to iCloud, just because I run many different OS's.
If you don't, iCloud may be fine. Just my $0.02.

Thanks,
Blake

My main problem is indeed the Imap. I had a rather lively discussion
about the issues on this list a while back. I managed to converse with
Google and Apple, and it was fixed for a while, but now no matter what
I do e-mails either 1) Don't arrive or show up on time, 2) Aren't sent
immediately (even with refresh), or 3) Are unceremoniously dumped into
my Archives folder, even though I went through the process to make
this not happen under the imap settings for Gmail on their website.
I'll probably eventually switch to my iCloud e-mail address, but at
this point it seems like an enormous hastle to switch everything over,
and could be rather lengthy especially as I am in a position of having
to e-mail back and forth with possible employers and other companies.
If you know of a way to fix the Gmail issue, I'd be open to anything,
really. I like the way Apple Mail interacts with iCloud accounts, but
the system Gmail uses for Imap totally screws Apple Mail up. I know
this also used to work in Mountain Lion to my knowledge, but since the
update to Mavericks it's been extremely intermittent. I use Gmail fine
on my iOS devices as well.
Thanks, Jason -- I'll look into those.

Hello,
I have used the new version of Skype for IOS quite a bit. From what I've seen
so far, in an attempt to redesign the interface, they did in fact break a lot
of the accessibility that was present in previous versions of the client. But
all is not lost. The recent update that was released (version 5.1),
specifically mentions voiceover improvements. This indicates that the
developers are aware of issues related to voiceover, and are working to address
those issues. Perhaps others have more opinions of this issue, but if I were
you, I would not update to the latest version until all the voiceover issues
are addressed, and it is in a state comparable to what we had in other previous
versions.

It's clunky, and got slightly worse with the 4.6 update which breaks
keyboard tracking. But the good news is that soon there will be a
completely new client, called TeamTalk VI that a friend of mine is working
on. We got permission from the developer to write it and it will be using
his SDK license and will be available on the official bear ware site.
Apart from the interface using native controls, it will have more speech
events, a few more chat commands to EG. switch audio devices, and it might
even be scriptable so you will be able to write lua scripts that you can
run. It will come out on Windows as well. Work is progressing nicely, for
now the basic interface is done and the SDK has been completely wrapped,
so work on the actual program is starting. You can view the source here:

Re: Installing Windows 7 on an MBA using the DVD drive from a Macbook Pro

2013-12-04 Thread Blake Sinnett

Hello,

I think I remember hearing you could do this too, but the process of setting
it up wasn't possible without eye balls so I didn't investigate it much
more. There is also a way to install from a USB flash drive on newer Macs. I
know that an USB DVD drive works, as I have to use this method since the DVD
drive on my Mac mini has issues.

Is this possible? I don’t have a portable external DVD drive. Seems as
though I recall hearing it is possible somewhere.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I learned about the createinsallmedia program here

I used the same USB flash drive I used for the latest updates of MountainLion.

Yes, it is perfectly accessible. If you wish to send your file to
someone nearby, have them select AirDrop from the Sidebar, then locate
the file/folder you wish to share with them, press VO-shift-m to bring up
the Contextual menu, choose Share, then choose AirDrop from the sub-menu.
A new window will appear letting you choose the computer that has AirDrop
ready. Select that computer then press on the Send button. The user at
the other computer has to accept the file then it begins the copy. Files
are placed in your Downloads folder for you to retrieve when the copy is

Apple sells something called a USB Super Drive that will definitely do the job.
It is a USB 3 drive, so a very fast transfer rate and does CD/DVD Read/Write.
Lots of folks simply leave the external Super Drive at home so they only need
to carry around the very light computer. The external Super Drive usually runs
for about $79 or so and is available through Apple or other tech providers that

Thanks for your suggestion about the four-finger tap at the bottom of the

can't always squeeze all four of them onto the iPhone when it is in
portrait mode. Even after going into the VO training section and
practicing quite a bit, my phone frequently registered three fingers, not
four, although it sure did feel as if four fingers were touching the glass
part of the phone. I may have to get used to using WhatsApp in landscape
mode.

Thanks again,

Hi.

Several friends and associates correspond with me using WhatsApp. I
have an iPhone 4S and, although the interface isn't comfortable for me,
it is important that I stay in touch with these people.

In one particular situation, I do not wish to erase any of the dialogue
I am having, because this person's communication with me is a partial
chronicling of a friendship that is very, very important in my life. So
here's my question:

Since I am loathe to erase a single message in this particular thread,
how can I quickly get to the message that this person most recently
sent to me? Whenever I click on this person's name, WhatsApp takes me
to the beginning of the message thread, and I have thus far found no
reliable way to get to the end of the thread, i.e. to the message most
recently sent. I know that WhatsApp has a feature that lets you clear
the messages, but without knowing whether or not this also deletes the
thread, I won't invoke the feature. So in summary, how do I quickly get
to the end of a thread? A three-finger flick-up advances me a few
messages at a time, but I am wondering if there is a quicker way to get
right to the most recent message sent. Is there a way to export an
entire message thread to a file? I have looked at the settings, but I
have struck out thus far.

Kindest regards to all and thanks,

Mike

to get to the end of the thread, i.e. to the message most recently sent.
I know that WhatsApp has a feature that lets you clear the messages, but
without knowing whether or not this also deletes the thread, I won't
invoke the feature. So in summary, how do I quickly get to the end of a
thread? A three-finger flick-up advances me a few messages at a time, but
I am wondering if there is a quicker way to get right to the most recent
message sent. Is there a way to export an entire message thread to a file?
I have looked at the settings, but I have struck out thus far.

Kindest regards to all and thanks,

Mike

Re: OT: iOS 6 Disappointment!

2013-02-15 Thread Blake Sinnett

Hello,

I would have to agree. Apple has lost some of their magic ever since the
middle of last year. Things just seem to be breaking a little too often.
iCloud, bugs in iOS 6, the maps fiasco... Who knows what'll happen next. Of
course Tim's just taken over, so maybe after a while things'll smooth out.
The only thing we can do is wait and see what happens.

OT: iOS 6 disappointment!

Is anyone else feeling a little sad about the iOS eco-system since release
in October. Don't get me wrong, there will always be issues. However Apple
has had so many issues.
First, you had the complete redesign of iBooks, App, iTunes store. In the
first release the blind community lost a lot of access, because we didn't
even have the ability to see ratings with the new software.
Second, you had the App store crashing when you would go into the search
area. This happened to everyone, not just our community.

thirdly, who can forget the map debacle.
You have devices going into recovery mode when you do a reset.
The 6. 1 update you now have exchange issue. The extreme 4s battery issue,
and now this morning people who use institutional accounts like at
schools. Individuals can bypass the no downloading option.
I just find this so sad. apple used to pay such close attention to
stability, clean UI, and of course accessibility. I still love my Apple
products, and hope things change under Jony Ive. Is anyone else feeling
slightly let down? This is just a short list, I know you could point out
more. I just pointed out a few which never should have happened!

Re: Uncut demonstration of jailbreak iOS six using voice over

2013-02-04 Thread Blake Sinnett

Hello,

Well, you get a bunch of stuff. For example, the ability to have buttons do
nonstandard things like launch apps, put apps on your device that Apple
doesn't want you to have and modify the files in the file system very
easily. So you can change the sounds for VoiceOver to something totally
different if you so chose. And that's just the beginning.

I would recommend following tech news. At least look at AppleInsider. This
bug is well publicised all over the net.

In case you are wondering what this thing is about, it's not totally Apple's
fault. It's actually a problem with the ISO date. See here:

It doesn't matter if I switch the phone off or on or I get rid of
everything from the Appswitcher. I think this feature stopped working a
couple of weeks ago. Any ideas? I did however had to restore the phone
due to Voice over not coming back on after switching it off.

Jorno (was Re: Pairing of Amazon Basics keyboard.)

I should clarify that the Apple keyboard does have a switch but there is no way
to tell if it's currently on or off as it is just a toggle pushbutton. So, if
the keyboard isn't working you push it and wait a few seconds to find out if it
pairs up, otherwise you just turned it off :) That said, I usually leave mine
on all the time and it goes a month or two on a set of batteries.

I've used PC keyboards on the Mac before and had problems with Command and
Option being reversed. Is this not the case on the Amazon keyboard?

Hello.

I for sometime have been looking for a mini bluetooth wireless keyboard
for my I phone. However, all the small keyboards that I have bought
and have been dissatisfied with, have a flaw. The command and option
keys do not work like the Apple Wireless Bluetooth keyboard that I
have. I need a small keyboard so that I can put it in my bag as I'm
out all day at work or travelling about as I want to copy and paste on
the move. Does anyone know a good keyboard which will work like the
Apple Wireless Bluetooth keyboard please? I can't take my Apple
keyboard with me due to it being rather big for my bagg. I do take my
braille display with me some times but don't want to use it all the
time.

Hope some one can help and if so, please put in the link for the blue

Perhaps you can write to me off list so as not to clutter any

Thanks in advance.

Re: Google problems again

2012-11-26 Thread Blake Sinnett
Actually, the blame should be placed on Apple for not supporting all of the
HTML elements correctly in VoiceOver. FYI, the search tools link is not far
above the results heading. That brings up several options, one of them being
the time option you're looking for. You then need to find the text that says
any time. Press VO-Command-F5 to route the mouse to it and click. That
should expand it and let you choose the time you need.

I hate saying this, but I have no problems with Firefox and NVDA on Windows.
All the element attributes are reported correctly. The any time text shows
as clickable. I press enter and away I go. The web browsing experience on
the Mac still has a little way to go. It's 95% there now, but full support
of element attribute reporting and interaction among a couple other things
and it'll be perfect.

Well Google did it again. Not sure how anyone in the world can say
google cares about accessibility and the fact that there is a Google
Access Twitter account is absolutely laughable. They changed how
Google search results come up, and go figure you used to be able to
click on search tools as a lot of time I need to search for results in
the last week, now I can't seem to find that anywhere. Just a bunch of
inaccessible pop down boxes and stuff when you click on it it does
nothing. How anyone in the world can think Google is a progressive
thinking company when it comes to accessibility blows my mind. And
someone of you are excited for the google self driving car? Seriously
you are going to trust a company to put you behind the wheel that
can't seem to ever made one positive step forward with their search
engine or google apps. Seriously it is laughable. Anyway, had to vent
a little, but if anyone has figure out how to do a search for the last
week or 24 hours, please do let me know

In addition to Skype, are there any good SIP phone clients for the Mac
which are accessible? I've used Linphone on Linux from the command

may be popular but the protocol is proprietary and SIP is more
universal. SIP is probably one of the best VOIP protocols out there.

OS X 10.7.3: Possible fix for those with problems

2012-02-02 Thread Blake Sinnett

Hi all,

I came across this article which tells how to fix the weird issues some might
be having with the new Lion update. In short, download the combo update and
install it over the current installation.

http://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/02/os-x-10-7-3-update-issues-fixable-in-many-cases-with-combo-version/

Following yesterday's release of OS X 10.7.3, a number of users in our forums
and at Apple's discussion forums began reporting issues with the update. The
most serious of these issues seems to be widespread crashing of apps generally
accompanied by an artwork error in the crash notice window in which the
window's buttons are replaced with graphics showing CUI and question marks.

In general, users have found that applying the combo version of the OS X 10.7.3
update rather than the standard delta version typically offered via Software
Update will fix the issues. The combo update can even be applied over an
existing installation that is exhibiting the problem.

With the crashing issues perhaps causing users difficulties in applying the
combo update to fix the problem, OS X Daily provides a nice summary of how this
can be accomplished:
The simple formula is this:

- Download Mac OS X 10.7.3 Combo Updater (direct link)
- Run the 10.7.3 Combo Updater on top of the existing 10.7.3 installation
- Reboot

If you can’t get to the desktop of the Mac in question, you can boot it with
Target Disk Mode (Firewire or Thunderbolt required), and then point the 10.7.3
Combo Update at the troubled Mac and install it that way. If your OS X
installation is totally screwed up and you can’t use target disk mode, you have
a few choices:

1. Restore from a recent pre-10.7.3 Time Machine backup, then install the Combo
Updater
2. Boot from Recovery HD, a Recovery Drive, or Lion USB drive, and reinstall
everything

Not the best situation, but hopefully you have recent Time Machine backups. The
report also notes that users who already updated and are unaffected by the
issues but still concerned that there may still be issues lurking can back up
their systems and simply install the combo version for peace of mind.

Hope this helps,
Blake

RE: Gmail Contacts

Hi,

It works great. I use Google Voice, but the way you set it up on the iOS device
is the same. When you add an account, choose Microsoft Exchange. Enter your
email, username and password. Click next and let it verify, then enter the
server m.google.com in the server field and hit next. After that, choose what
you want to be synced, hit save and off it goes.

Hello:

I was recently involved in a conversation with my sister, who is considering
switching from her current Android-powered device to an iPhone. She said that
an important factor would be the contacts feature. She said that she put a lot
of time into her contacts, and has all of them stored on Gmail. She wanted to
know whether the iPhone could download or synchronize her Gmail contacts from
her account, thus saving her time manually re-entering them. As I do not have a
Gmail account, I can’t answer this question in any sort of detail for her. I
use Exchange, which seems to do fine as far as synchronization is concerned.
So, if anyone has any light to shed on this matter, I would really appreciate
said light and the shedding of such.

RE: Bootcamp vs Fusion

2011-06-28 Thread Blake Sinnett

I would use Boot camp. You get to use all resources for Windows. Also, you can
install Windows onto a Boot Camp partition without sighted assistance. If you
have the space, you can install both Boot Camp and Fusion. Once Boot Camp is
installed, you can let Fusion use the Boot Camp partition. Here are a couple of
links to look at, depending on how you want to do it.

While there are many more things accessible about the new version of the

Why not use lossless compression? Then it's a non issue. CD music is only
44,100 hz so it's not like the highs are that well preserved anyway. You need
to get in to the super audio cd stuf or the higher bit rate recordings to get
 interesting quality.

 Hi all,
WHen you select the restore button in itunes, your computer contacts Apple to
download the firmware you'll need. I already have an isw file, and I'd like
to restore to that one instead of the file I would be getting from Apple's
server. I did some research on how to supposedly do this on the mac, and
everything I read says that when you hold down the option key and then hit
the restore button, a dialogue should pop up asking for the location of your
firmware. I have tried holding down vo-space and releasing the option key
last, routing the VO cursor to the restore button and holding down option
while clicking the mouse on my macbook pro, and option-clicking with trackpad
commander on. I have not been able to get the location dialogue to pop up.
Has anyone had success doing this with VO?
My apologies if this topic has already been covered.

Subject: a change in how to play Audible.com samples

 Hi there,

Just thought I'd post that the normal procedure we use to play Audible.com
samples on the results page no longer works. I have called Audible about
this. Now, to play a sample, it is necessary to actually click on the page
for the given book from which you wish to play a sample and then play it from
there. Here's how you do it.

 1. Find the book from which you wish to play a sample.

 2. Open that book's page.

 3. Find where it says sample on the page.

 4. Now, manually rout the mouse pointer to the word sample by pressing
 command+VO+shift+F5.

 5. Now, lock down the VO keys via command+semicolon.

 6. Press F5 to ensure that the word sample is under the mouse. You may wish
to press VO+command+shift+F5 to make doubly sure.

 7. Now, move your mouse directly in an exactly straight line to the right.
Make very certain you move directly in only a straight line going neither up
nor down or at an angle of any sourt. IF you're using a track padd, you can
place a finger directly on the very left uper corner and move right. Move
very slowly as you do so.

 8. As you move your mouse, press F5 one time after another to make certain of
what the mouse is resting over.

 9. When you hear, empty scrol area you will know to stop moving the mouse.

 10. Now, press and hold down your control key and actually click press the
mouse itself or else, if using your track padd, physically press the padd.

 11. At this point, a menu consisting of thirteen items will appear. Just
arrow down and press the space bar on the play button.

Note that, after you've started a sample playing, you will need to turn off
Voice Over and turn it on again. Otherwise, You will not see the thirteen
item menu when you go to play the next sample.

 HTH.

2010-07-19 Thread Blake Sinnett

Actually, the hackery is quite simple. Type the following in terminal:

defaults write org.webkit.nightly.WebKit StartPageDisabled -bool YES

press return, and you're all done

Webkit nightly is intended for developers so they force the home page to
theirs which has information about the latest builds and such. While
they might have some hackery to get around this it might just be easier
to hit command-shift-h to jump to your home page.

Hi Heather,

You can do this from finder by pressing CMD-Shift-G for go to. Then just type
the path to your folder. Also take note that Macs use the forward slash instead
of backslash.

I have not received my mac yet but was wondering if you have a run command and
you can type the drive with the folder and the name of the file. For example:
in windows you can do windows run to run and c:/folder name / name of file. I
was just wondering because that is how I get to my files on the pc. If you
don't, I wrote down the command to get to the files folder for the mac. Thanks

iBooks issue on iPod touch and possibly iPhone

2010-06-21 Thread Blake Sinnett

Hi folks,

I've noticed an undesirable happening with iBooks on my touch. Upon double
tapping the button to buy a book, it doesn't seem to work and that button
disappears. When I tap and hold until the pass-through noise is heard, I can
get it to go past the book info screen.

So far, I've had one other person confirm it on her iPhone and wonder if anyone
else with iPod touches and/or iPhones wouldn't mind trying this out. If you
find the same, I reckon we should report it to Apple

Thanks,

Blake

How do you even read your mail with the mobile me site? I just use Apple mail
for this, and addressbook and iCal for the other things. Has anyone figured
out iDisk? I love mobile me because it pushes all my contacts to all my

I hope not. AMD processors are slower, their high-end processors include
fewer cores, and they all suck down more power and put off more heat.
They're cheaper, yes, but you get what you pay for. Imagine your MacBook at
a 25% lower price, but with its battery life cut from 8-10 hours to 4-6, and
now being too hot to keep on your lap. Hurray.

Seems like the smart people are making universal apps. This is what everyone

Yep, and your iPhone will have a much smaller screen, and won't be able to
run the same software the same way with as much power.

Right now, people are making their iPhone apps run on the iPad. Eventually,
though, the new iPad apps will need to be scaled down in order to be ported
 back to the iPhone.

Generally, it's an iPhone. However, besides the screen size being
increased, the interface has increased in complexity, also. Apple is
certainly using the extra space to expand on what is possible with
  an iPhone type touch interface.

It took me only very little time to discover that portrait mode
(which lots of sighted users select), is probably not the best for a
blind person. When you're working with two hands, having more
horizontal room seems to make more of a difference when navigating.
Fortunately, it is a snap to try either way to see what works for you.

I absolutely agree with the posters that were talking about the
horrible oversight about the back plate of the iPad. It is almost
nothing but shiny aluminum. You're supposed to be able to set the
iPad on a table to use it, but I promise, the first time that you
place it on any table that isn't absolutely clear of small dirt
particles, you'll pic it up to discover that the slight motion of
you pushing and sliding the iPad has ground the dirt particles in to
the back, and scratched the hell out of your shiny aluminum back
plate. Of course, you can buy the case to fix that. the case is a
type of thin and stiff coated particle board that feels a lot like a
traditional print notebook. One side snugly holds the iPad, and the
other side is a flap that covers the iPad screen when closed. I
suppose that most people will want the case to protect the screen
when traveling, anyway. If you go without the case, though, you are
absolutely asking for it. Apple could have put something on the back
to make the iPad more stable. Maybe not rubber feet, but they could
have gone with a felt square in the center, a stylized strip of some
high friction material, etc. The curved back will insure that the iPad
wobbles on the table, and the glossy case will absolutely scratch.

VoiceOver sounded about the same, and responded with the same speed,
pretty much. The speaker was very clear. Didn't get to play music
with it, but I hear the bass is poor. Still, speech is pretty good
  through the built-in speakers.

However, it seemed to me that iPad programs opened more slowly than
on the iPhone. Maybe there is more information to load? However,
with more memory and a faster processor, I wasn't expecting that.

I wasn't dramatically blown away by the applications that were
available on it, but working with a big talking touch screen
interface started me dreaming about things that *could* be
accomplished with a device like that. Many people might not need the
iPad for web surfing or checking e-mail, but I think that,
eventually, there will be some very unique uses for the iPad.

RE: 64-bit kernel

To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com

Hi guys,

So I figured there had to be a way to boot into the 64-bit kernel, as System
information only shows Mac OS X running 32-bit kernel and extensions.

So I go looking, and find a hint that you can either do this by forcing PRAM to
boot the machine into 64-bit kernels, editing a configuration or simply holding
down the 6 and 4 keys during boot.

but I didn't want to take the PRAM approach. I just don't like messing with
nonvolatile stuff in the machine itself. If I was to edit the configuration of
the boot.plist to make it always boot into the 64-bit kernel, it'd continuously
do it until I changed it again. Of course, the downside to doing that would
perhaps be driver compatibility, as not all drivers have been made 64-bit
capable yet.

So I wanted to try the temporary method of holding down the 6 and 4 keys
together making the Mac boot into the 64-bit kernel. Just once, to see if I'd
encounter problems, and if I didn't have any issues I would change the boot
plist. However, the method doesn't seem to do anything. Of course, I checked in
the terminal if my firmware is 64-bit compatible, and it is.

I held down 6 and 4 while it was booting up. I tried two different methods. I
tried holding it down as soon as I heard the Mac power on. That is, even before
the startup sound. I was assuming you'd have to do that, since the boot loader
has to contact the kernel after BootX has been handed control by Open
Firmware. Of course, the boot loader has to know which kernel to boot.
I am assuming that you have to hold the two aforementioned keys down before the
startup sound, as it has pretty much already loaded the kernel by that point, I
believe.

So does anyone know why it isn't working? Well, it seemingly doesn't do
anything.

Regards,
Nic

Hi guys,

You can get access to Open Firmware by holding Command-Option-O-F down as soon
as you power on your Macintosh. Here, you can get information about installed
RAM, your device tree and so-forth. You can also simulate an arbitrary size of
RAM less than the total installed RAM in your actual machine. You can also
disable RAM sticks in your computer, though other RAM sticks will run as before
except those that are disabled.

Here is my question.

While you can run a telnet service within Open Firmware, I am guessing there
is no accessibility at this point. Is the only way to actually Telnet through
to your Mac via another computer so you can receive the text? I'm guessing
that's the solution.

In short, working a touch device like the IPhone is easier for most
sighted people to learn than even a mouse-driven computer interface, but
an IPhone or IPod Touch is too small and under-powered to replace a
computer for many tasks. So the tablet will be easy to use like an IPhone,

Plus, keep in mind that the wants and preferences of sighted people don't
necessarily line up with what a blind person considers when deciding on

dismiss any idea that a blind person might prefer using any device with a
touch screen interface. Certainly, we all don't prefer the IPhone, but
many people use it just fine. Who knows what using the tablet will be

I have produced a new utility called Skctl, the Skype Controller.
This will probably not be of interest to most of you, but it may
 interest some.

Skctl is a command-line Skype interface of sorts, with some added
features, most notably the ability to set up auto-answers for specific
users, rather than turning autoAnswer on for everyone at once in your
contact list. Other things you can do with Skctl include making
and managing calls, listing active file transfers with KBPS and
percent complete, playing voicemails, toggling microphone mute with a
single-letter command, and getting a user's last-online time, which the
Skype graphical interfaces currently don't provide accessibly.

Installation of the program on Windows requires first installing
ActivePython, the most widely used Windows Python distribution as far
as I can tell. The program should work without extra work on MacOS.

Installation instructions, system requirements, and a complete
reference on Skctl commands can be found at the following link:

 http://www.dlee.org/skype/skctl/man.php

The main link for Skctl, which also leads to the documentation page
 just mentioned, is

 http://www.dlee.org/skype/skctl/

From there, you can reach the documentation and get the current
 release, version 1.2.2.

Since this is both a new and a powerful interface, I strongly
recommend that users first examine the documentation just mentioned
before playing with Skctl commands. There is built-in help,
accessible by typing help or ? and pressing Enter at Skctl's
Skype prompt; but the online documentation is much more complete.

 Happy playing.

 Hello Esther,

Well, I can only speak for myself, but the reason why I didn't get too
excited about the news of the updated stand-alone Kendall device is because
I don't want yet another piece of technology to carry with me. I would be
happy if they'd just make the Kendall App accessible.

I do not wish to sound ungrateful for any advancement in accessibility but
to me, it would make more sense to make the Kendall app accessible first,
work out any bugs then port to the physical, expensive hardware product.

ordering of the list. Anyway, my language does not change. Everything is
 still in English.
 Am I doing something wrong?

RE: installing SL server on a macbook

2009-11-02 Thread Blake Sinnett

Actually, the Intel Macs use EFI (Extensible firmware interface.) The following
is from Wikipedia:

In January 2006, Apple Inc. shipped its first Intel-based Macintosh computers.
These systems use EFI and the Framework instead of Open Firmware, which had
been used on its previous PowerPC-based systems. On April 5, 2006, Apple first
released Boot Camp, which produces a Windows drivers disk and a non-destructive
partitioning tool to allow the installation of Windows XP or Vista without
requiring a reinstallation of Mac OS X. A firmware update was also released
that added BIOS support to its EFI implementation. Subsequent Macintosh models
shipped with the newer firmware. All current Macintosh systems are also able to
boot BIOS Operating Systems such as Windows XP and Vista. (With the exception
of the Xserve platform)

 Hi list,

I just wanted to agree with Anne. Web rotor is the thing I use most
and love it! I made the switch to Mac in June of this year and found
that while I run into some problems which are annoying and some times
frustrating, VO and safari have been easier for me than the years of
window screen readers. A major problem was on certain newspaper or
news sites, pressing comman+ VO+ h would not take me to the next
heading. Instead I'd get a message, safari is busy which would
last some times as long as two minutes. I installed snow leopard ten
days ago and now I don't have that issue at all. I have other minor
 annoying ones, but not that.

I started using dos in 1993 and was introduced to windows in 1996. I
toyed with it but much prefered dos until I was forced to make the
full time switch to windows in 2000. I made the cold turkey switch to
Mac this year and just recently read that a major obstacles for
switchers from windows to Mac is the tab key usage. Yet, all those
years of using windows, I actually never used the tab key to move
around a site. I guess I never even realized I could have until read
NFB's article review on VO. BTW, thank you to NFB. Their review and
response to the firestorm post VO review was one of the final straws
which helped me decide Mac was the way to go!!

  Hello Donna,

There are several commands that make web-browsing easier on the Mac.

First, you have the Web Rotor (VO-U), which you can use to look at
headers, links, auto web spots, and so on. I use the Headers menu when
reading articles from New SCientist. I go to the Headers menu and type
1 which takes me directly to the start of the article. I press VO-
Space to go to that header, then VO-A to read the whole article.

You then have the Item Chooser (VO-I). This is very useful if you know
some of the text you're looking for. Just type a few letters and the
number of items in the menu is reduced drastically to those containing
the letters you've entered. Once again, VO-Space will put you in the
  right field.

Then you can set a short-cut to switch between DOM and Groups mode.
For normal purposes, I prefer Groups mode, but for reading articles,
DOM works much better as it reads all links where they appear in the
text, whereas Groups mode puts all the links within one group at the
end of that group which often adds up to complete nonsense.

You then have all the other navigation features such as jumping from
header to header, visited link to visited link, etc.

The habit that all previous Windows users have to break is that of
tabbing around all the time. When you first start using VO, you should
forget that the Tab key exists and learn to live without it. Once
you're familiar with the Mac and VO, tabbing can be very useful, but
at the beginning, it's a great way of getting nowhere!

I've never been a Windows user, so I'm no good at answering questions
that relate to Windows, but I've been using Macs for around 13 years
(I used OutSpoken before VoiceOver came out). I'm a translator, so I
have to use the Internet for research all the time and I find it very
quick and easy. I have no sight at all, so I'm not cheating by looking
  at the screen!

I hope this brief explanation is of use to you.

  Cheers,

  Anne

The 32GB and 64GB iPod Touch 3G models have VoiceOver. There is no
iPod Touch model on which you can run all the iPhone apps, since
clearly the apps that support phone functions, or that rely on 3G
network connectivity or GPS or built-in compass will not find these
properties built into an iPod Touch. Nor will the apps that use the
camera. In principle, you could run a GPS app that uses a dock-
mounted GPS unit plugged into the base of the iPod Touch. I was
interested in the TomTom app for that reason, because the holder that
they sell for mounting the iPhone for car use contains a GPS signal in
the dock connector that plugs into the base of the iPhone to boost
signal. This means that it can also supply GPS functionality to an
iPod Touch. In principal, any GPS app could then be used with the
iPod touch. Other tear-down reports tell of the iPod Touch containing
a later-generation Broadcomm chip than is in the iPhone 3GS. This is
capable of supporting the faster 802.11N wireless connections, and FM
reception, although neither of these functions is currently active in
the iPod Touch 3G. It's possibile these features could be activated
in a later software release by Apple.

  Hi Søren,

The iPod Touch 3G in the 8GB version was introduced to fill the $99
price point offering. It does not have the same CPU that qualifies it
for the 3GS designation with the speed and capacity to support
VoiceOver. Here are a couple more of the features of the Third
Generation iPod Touch excerpted from the recent iLounge review:

  begin quote
For the new iPod touch, Apple has promised only two specific hardware
changes: “up to 50 percent faster performance” and “support for even
better graphics with OpenGL ES 2.0.” Though the company doesn’t
discuss the specifics of its components in iPod or iPhone devices,
this has been accomplished by a replacement of the prior model’s CPU
and graphics processor with newer, faster parts, upping the device’s
clock speed to approximately 800MHz and adding new special effects to
  its graphics arsenal.

  snip
The iPod touch and iPhone 3GS both include Nike + iPod support, while
the iPhone 3G does not. In terms of raw processing horsepower, the
iPod touch bests both the iPhone 3GS and the iPhone 3G, a difference
which will lead to marginally better-looking graphics on future touch
games than 3GS games, but significantly better graphics on both the
touch and 3GS than the iPhone 3G.

RE: Setting up a mac, so that the setup assistant will come up for somebody else that's getting it?

2009-09-28 Thread Blake Sinnett

Hi,

The easiest way to do this is to shut the computer down when you hear the mac
startup sound after setup reboots for the last time. Otherwise the setup
assistant won't play the VoiceOver help message. If this doesn't matter, just
quit the setup assistant when it comes up.

Hello, According to the Apple website the mac mini shares digital and analog
output and inputs which I would assume means you can plug a one eighth inch
coax digital output cable from the mini into a device that supports digital.

However when I try that it still seems to think I am using headphones according

Has anyone done this and if so how?

Thanks in advance.

 Hi all,

Just went to take a peak at the new iPod line on the UK Apple site,
and found this on the Nano page that got me curious:

It all begins with iTunes and its seamless integration with iPod
nano. First, iTunes reads your song information, then uses the
VoiceOver Kit to generate the announcements for the songs, artists and
playlists. Just sync your iPod nano to your computer and it really
 speaks to you.

It got me wondering, are we looking at actual TTs on the Nano here or
not? There's nothing in the promotional blurb to suggest to me that
VO is doing much new in this revision, but I'd love to be corrected.

Not meant in a negative way at all, I appreciate the awesomeness of VO
coming to the touch, just trying to make an educated decision on a
 budget.

 Cheers

 Hi,

Since SL hit the streets on Friday there has been a bit of chatter on
this and other general purpose VO/Mac related lists about AppleScript
and other programming tools and issues. I like reading these because
I'm a crusty old hacker with deep running geek tendencies; on the
other hand, I would bet that most people really don't care as they
will never attempt to write a program or a VO script.

I encourage everyone to do some sort of beginner programming tutorial
as just writing one or two very simple programs will help them
understand how and why computers do the things they do. Such will
also build affinity for the other application developers and the gang
at Apple who bring us VO which will help one learn to be patient when
your favorite bug gets ignored for a pretty long time.

With that said, though, I would assume that the average person really
doesn't want to touch on programming in a system language or do any
scripting. Furthermore, they probably don't want to read what can
look like Chinese to the uninitiated.

So, I propose an apple-hackers list for those of us who like a little
silicon under the fingernails so we can share ideas, techniques and
lend each other code so as to promote development and avoid wasting
time. Anything I do will be GPL so people can download it from SVN on
 hofstader.com
(when I get it set up) and others will have their own ways of
 distributing things.

This has worked for the JAWS scripting and programming blind mailing
lists for over a decade and we members of one or both of them have had
the enjoyment of watching high school hackers go onto get a degree and
enter the workforce partially because we old-timers smack them around
a bit while pointing them in the right direction.

The reason I don't recommend programming blind for us Macsters is that
it is almost 100% Windows and GNU/Linux people there and a sudden
invasion of Mac people might make some people pretty uncomfortable as
we're adding an entirely new platform to the mix and they neither know
the answers nor, in most cases, have a Mac around to help us with our
 problem.

 What do you folks think?

Blake,

When I Press Vo-Shift up arrow, I just get dinged at. What is supposed to be
happening?
Thanks,
Donna

RE: eBay to sell skype to private investors

Going SIP would be great for them.

If that's correct then that will be nice, the big problem with skype
at the moment is that you can only use a Skype client to communicate
with a Skype client or a Skype client to communicate with others via
the PSTN, mobile networks and so for whereas you can get any one of a
million VOIP services and use a whole bunch of software - titles such
as Express Talk - to use that VOIP service from your computer. Skype
cordless phones - in the main - aren't compatible with VOIP because
Skype uses its own protocol so that's where Skype may face some
difficult competition in the future unless the people address these
 issues.

  Hi,

My impression from the article and from the Skype blog is that Skype
is alive and well. It's going to be a more independent company than in

at more than anyone expected, so that's a good sign.

RE: possible voice over issue

2009-09-01 Thread Blake Sinnett

I have this problem as well. Usually, VO-down arrowing away and back to the
item fixes that. Still, that shouldn't happen.

Hi everyone. Wondering if anyone can reproduce this or if it's just
me. I have my macintosh HD showing on my desktop, I'm not sure if it's
related to that, or if having more than one volume showing on your
desktop produces the same results. Anyway, when I connect my external
hard drive or flash drive, they show as untitled or no name. This is
below the macintosh hd item. If I use the down arrow key voice over
says the name of my external volume as it should. Then, if I cursor
back up, macintosh HD is not spoken, but if I press v o f4 or v o f6,
the internal hard drive definitely has the selection.

Try selecting documents in the dock, VO-shift m and up arrow and select list.
That worked for me.

Re: A nice keystroke that we have now to add folders do the doc

2009-08-31 Thread Blake Sinnett

Freakin' sweet! Here I was about to see if I'd have to install that
program with accompanying workflow. Glad that's no longer needed.

Dan Eickmeier wrote:
Hi all, found this in the VO getting started manual for Snow Leopard,
which you can request from Apple accessibility, that we can now add
folders to the doc, at the press of a keystroke, when we're focused on
the folder. This was definitely something we couldn't do in Leopard
with ease. That keystroke is command-shift t. Just thought i'd
 sharethat tip that I found.
