Re: WhisperSync for Voice.

2015-02-13 Thread Jane
Hi.

I have tried using that with my Braille display and it works great! I can read
in Braille until I get tired, then I can switch to audio right there in the app
with no problems. When I want Braille again, I can switch back just as easily
and the display will be where the Audible audio stopped.

I'll add to Myrna's comments below that WhisperSync is designed to allow
sighted users who start reading a book visually to be able to move to their
cars and take up at the same location in the Audible book with spoken
narration. I imagine that this is where the Sync in the name originates.

I expect this would also work if you're reading the Kindle version of the
book with TTS in the Kindle app or reader although I have not tested this.

I will say that one book I wanted to read was less expensive to get the
Kindle version, add the Audible WhisperSync than what it would have cost to
use one of my Audible credits. But I don't expect this will occur very
 often.

 Hi,

WhisperSync refers to the Audible version of the book. So, if you purchase
a Kindle eBook, and then you choose to purchase what they are calling
WhisperSync, you would be purchasing the Audible version of the book.
What you then have is an audio book, read by a human narrator, in the
Audible format. You can play the Audible version in the Audible app on an I
Device, or if you have an audiobook player, such as the Victor Reader
Stream, the book can be played on such a player. If you have a Kindle,
there is a built-in Audible app on it, as well.

Re: command for switching between open files in an app

Good evening. :)
The command to switch between two files in a program is command-accent. The
accent key is the key that is directly underneath the escape key.

Re: reading bookshare xml files

2015-01-03 Thread Jane
The best way I have found to do this is to get Voice Dream Reader if you have a
portable device like an iPhone iPad or iPod, get the book there and then save
the library The book will then be in plain text on your computer and you can
read it that way. There's an idea! Maybe Winston will considering making Voice
Dream Reader for the Macs, too Hmm

Adding Content To Playlists

2015-01-03 Thread Jane
Hi everyone.

I know there is a way to add items to a playlist by copying them from whatever
location they are direct into the playlist after I hit the add to playlist
button, but they don't always end up in the right place--usually at the end. Is
there a better way to do this, short of going to Recently Added (which in my
case has several thousand items since I am rebuilding my library) finding each
file, and doing it via the context menu?

Reading Subtitles

2014-12-28 Thread Jane
Is there any way to read the subtitles to a video in iTunes with Braille at
all? Very curious, because there is this very fun-sounding DVD we got for Eric
for Christmas--sounds like something I would thoroughly enjoy, in fact--but
it's in Hindi with some English, but still. Trying to figure out any way I can
follow along somehow.

It's Dhoom-3 if anyone is curious and has ideas. :) Also, the music is fun.

Skyrates Help - Yes Mac related

2014-05-21 Thread Jane
I have created a character at

http://skyrates.net

Ironically, the process is totally accessible! You can create the character
from start to finish with only one audio captcha that is clear and easy to
understand.

Past that point, though, it's hard to play, I can't fly a plane, because of the
flash, I also can't participate in chat beyond General. What I am wondering is
if there is a way to make VO click on the right word, Roleplay, Help or
whatever, so that I can switch to that chat window. For that matter, I am
wondering if it's remotely possible to fly at all, or if I am just dreaming and
I have to resign myself to plain old general chat.

I use this link: http://skyrates.jusque.net/skylight/

to chat, if that helps and if anyone is willing to look at this.

 Hi,

 OK, here you go...

 1. Close all windows and quit all applications.
 2. Up to the Apple menu.
 3. Down to Restart.

As you hear the startup chime, press down the cmd key and the r key
simultaneously. You can get yourself ready while the computer is going
through the motions of shutting down so that your fingers are ready when the
 startup chime sounds.

 4. Hold down those keys for about 3 or 4 seconds after the startup chime
 ends then release.
 5. Wait for at least one minute then try pressing cmd-f5 to see if VO will
start. If it doesn't start, then wait a another 30 seconds or so and try
 turning VO on again.
 6. Once it's on, VO-space on the Continue button to choose English as your
 language or change as needed.

On occasion, I've seen it where the Language Chooser doesn't appear, if
that's the case, then you'll be at the Recovery dialog.

 7. Interact with the Table and choose re-Install.
 8. Stop Interacting with the Table then navigate to the continue button and
 press it with VO-space.
 9. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.

It will likely ask for your Apple ID and confirm that you really want to do
this. It will also ask you to agree to all the license terms, you know,
giving up your first born and such. After all that, it will download the
installer from the AppStore and go through the re-installation process. It
should restart after a while and you may need to turn VO back on so that you
can determine its progress. After everything is done, it hopefully will be
 back to normal.

 Good luck.

 Hi,

That should be the one. It's starting to look like you may need to do a
re-install. I wouldn't go the total clean install route yet. You could try
the Re-install option in the Recovery partition. This would install the
newest MacOS onto your system, hopefully fixing any issues that exist. A
good backup is preferred prior to attempting this but it is quicker and less
problematic than a clean install. I think it's worth a try for you.

Let me know if you need assistance getting started with this if you choose to
 go this way.

Hmmm. I wouldn't bother doing another repair after this, as some items

 * Go to your Finder.
 * Open your Macintosh HD
 * Open the System folder.
 * Open the Library folder
 * Open the Core Services folder.
 * Open the Battery item.

Now try accessing your Menu Extras again with VO-m-m and see if the Battery
Status menu is available. If it is, then do the same process to get some
of the other extras back onto the Status Menus. If that doesn't do it, let

 Hi,

Don't rush to the reformat, that is a drastic and usually unnecessary
task. Try to do a repair permissions first. To do so...

 * Go to the Finder.
 * Press cmd-shift-u to open the Utilities folder.
 * Navigate to the Disk Utility app and open it.
 * From the table of disks, select your Macintosh HD.
 * Stop Interacting with the table and select the First Aid tab.
 * Navigate to the Repair Disk Permissions button and press it with
 VO-space.
 * Wait patiently as it does its task.

Sometimes this needs performed more than once to fix most permission
errors. In some cases, you'll need to perform this from the Recovery
Partition, but I'll wait to see if this does the job first. By the way,
what exactly happens when you press the VO-m-m command? Is there an
alert sound or simply takes you somewhere but no Menu Extras are
 available.

External Drives, CDs, and DVD problems

Whenever I put in a CD, or a DVD, or whenever I plug in one of my four thumb

and tell it to mount.

Does anyone know what I need to rest to fix this? I'd like everything to just

Downloading MP3s Purchased From amazon

2014-01-02 Thread Jane
I purchased a track today, and I am trying to download the MP3 to my Mac. It
simply is not working, I have launched the cloud player on my Mac but I can't
see anything on the screen. Does anyone have any idea what to do? Pressing
control-option-shift-space on download doesn't seem to work.

Deleting Mail From Gmail site

2013-11-16 Thread Jane
I have Mail on my Mac and iPad and on the GMail server set to iMap. for
some reason, when I tell Mail to delete stuff, it doesn't delete it, it just
holds it. I can see the emails in the deleted items folder--over six thousand
messages, but I don't see how to reliably delete them on Gmail using the Mac.
Does anyone have suggestions?

 Hi all,
Thanks to a great support rep at Apple, I have a way to close the preview
pane in mail under OS10.9 Maverix.

 1. In Mail, hit cmd-comma to open the Mail preferences. Choose the Viewing
button from the toolbar, then find and check “use classic layout”.
 2. Close the preferences window and find the messages table. Do not interact
with it; rather, vo-right past it until you find a horizontal splitter.
 3. VO does not seem able to close this completely, so you will need a mouse.
Press vo-cmd-f5 to focus the mouse pointer on the splitter, then click and
drag as far right as you can. If you are using a trackpad, be sure the
 Trackpad Commander is off.
 4. Assuming you went straight right and moved far enough, you should find the
preview pane gone. Best of all, you can now switch back to Standard View if
you want to, and the pane will still be hidden!

 Have a great day,

Updating to Mavericks

2013-10-23 Thread Jane
Hi eveyrone.

When I looked in the app store on this Macbook Pro I saw a button that let me
upgrade to Mavericks, but when I look on my daughter's Mac, I don't seem to see
it. Will it just not be there if the Mac can't be upgraded?

She's running Snow Leopard. The trouble i, I can't find what kin of Mac it is,
even under About This Mac. No year or anything like that.

Archive and Reinstall

2013-10-06 Thread Jane
I haven't done any sort of re-installation of software, except to upgrade this
machine, since I got it a couple years ago. I'm starting my third year. I am
wondering if archving and re-installing, starting fresh, would be a good idea.
Maybe it would take care of that little irritating import selected audio files
error I keep getting, and perhaps it would just help the system run smoother, I
have 80GB free--would this be enough to d the re-install and still keep my
files and things?

iTunes Question

2013-09-18 Thread Jane
I have downloaded the newest iTunes, the one you have to have before upgrading
to IOS7. It seems to be snappier, but now I am having an issue with podcasts.
If I tell it to delete a podcast episode before it's downloaded, it won't let
me delete it. I have had to unsubscribe from several podcasts because there are
way too many episodes that are not downloaded that I have already listened to.
Is this fixable?

Re: To the person wanting feedback on Kindle app and braille

2013-08-04 Thread Jane
I dont know if it's unique to Kindle. In some iBooks, I can get lag when
panning. I use a RefreshaBraille 18. I notice that in the Kindle app in
particular there is a delay if I make the font size very very smal. I like the
size to be small so more text can fit on a page, but I get very frustrated with
the delay when trying to read with Braille that way. I either have to turn the
font size up to a bigger one, or only listenwith speech.

reported the problem to Amazon, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that
 they'll fix it.

Reading Captions

2013-05-08 Thread Jane
I am curious if there's a way to read the closed captions with a Braille

Custom Braille Display Command

2013-05-08 Thread Jane
I would like to set it up so that the ch-chord on my RefreshaBraille would do
the spell-check command in whatever window and jump me to the word so I can fix
it. I have opened up the Commanders thing, and I am trying to assign a command,
but I don't see any sort of relevant way to do it. Find next misspelled word
doesn't work, because it doesn't jump the cursor to it for me.

Any ideas how I can accomplish this?

Re: TV Series Question

2013-05-07 Thread Jane
I told it to prefer standard definition shows, but it doesn't seem to make a
difference unles the shows are already in SD.
I want SD becase they seem to be smaller size compared to HD.

 HI Jane,

Why do you want SD instead of HD? When syncing to an iDevice there's always
the option to use SD for movies and TV shows.

Anyway, apparently if you go to the iTunes Store, interact with the Web
Content Area or whatever name it goes by, and then click on the Purchased
link, down the bottom there will be a checkbox which says download in HD when
available. You can uncheck this, delete all your HD TV shows, and when you
re-download them they'll be in SD.

I found this solution from the following discussion:

 Hope this helps.

I can touch elements on the screen and activate them, but I have to find

Re: Mactubes

2012-11-27 Thread Jane
It definitely *is* possible to download videos from MacTubes. It takes
fiddling, but it *is* doable.

You have to put in the URL for the video and start it playing, Then you have to
find the first unlabeled button to the right of the playing video then hit
control-option-shift-m and arrow down till you hear download submenu then hit
right-arrow and arrow down to the video format you want. I tend to use MP4.

Then watch the slider to the right until it says 100% and the video will be
ownloaded.

Re: blind friendly flatbed scanners? any ideas?

I guess the closest thing to blind-friendly scanner is a SARA--Scanning And

thumb crives.

 hello everyone.

I seem to be running into the google too much information problem. I am
looking for a blind friendly scanner that will be supported under OS X (as
well as windows 7+ with jaws). I need this information for a technology
requisition. so far, I keep getting hits on scanners that are marketed under
the intel name (intel reader) and a number of canon models, HP, epson,
brother and others. unfortunately, looking at the sites for a lot of these
devices, there doesn't seem top be any reference to being blind accessible,
let alone being supported with either OS X (and voiceover) or windows (with
 jaws).

some of the sites (like hp) have so many graphics that navigating them is
 confusing.

any suggestions from here would greatly help my search. I really need to get
the ball rolling on this before the end of this month.

 thanks.

Wireless Trouble

2012-10-28 Thread Jane
My computer is supposed to automatically join our wireless network when I
connect, or atleast join a known one on a list, but for some reason I have to
go into the Extras menu and find my network and tell it to join.

When I looked at the list of things under network, Wireless was fourth on the
list. How do I change the order so it will start up first when the computer
starts? It says to drag to change the order, but I can't figure out how to o
that.

The best way to rip DVDs that have auio description is to tell it to rip all

audio description track then.

Bookshare App question

2012-10-04 Thread Jane
Is there anyway to save books you downloaded from withint he Bookshare app
directly to the computer? When I look at Read2Go under Aps and look at the
documents, it doesn't show any that I have downloaded from inside the app, only
documents that I have downloaded from the web and added manually through
iTunes. But I want to be able to save those Bookshare books I already
downloaded to the computer--I mea I have over 100 of those.

Any thoughts on how I can do this?

Web Help, Please - Lion

2012-09-14 Thread Jane
I am trying to access documents on a secure site. In theory, I am supposed to
be able to click on a name, a folder will open, and I am then supposed to be
taken to a list of files.

I managed to click on the main folder, but I am unable to click on the internal
folders. How do you do this?

This is a page where there are no links it's just words that you have to know
are clickable. Sometimes vo-option-shift-space works, other times not.

Any thoughts on navigating this?

Audacity hates me.

If I try to use the brackets, one or the other will go away. If I try to do

I am just trying to get The Lord of the Rings--the trilogoy that I was given

the Foreward and Prologue are in their right places.

shift-end, and/or cmd-k after each selection instead of after both. If that
doesn't work, try just hitting left bracket on the start of the audio to

This will let you save that part of the audio as its own file and leave the

That will use voiceover to generate an aiff audio file of the spoken version
of whatever text is in textfile.txt. You can then load up that AIFF into
iTunes to convert it to mp3 or use Sox if you have that installed. You can
specify the audio file format to be something else but mp3 was not one of the

for performance. In other words it took 1 seconds to generate 20 seconds of
 spoken text audio.
