Re: on screen keyboard
Hi Gabe. I'm having the same problems as you. The only way to make the onscreen keyboard visible is to use either external keyboard or Braille Display and the space with dots 1 4 6 a couple of times to toggle to onscreen keyboard visible. I was looking in the voiceover commands list to see if I could assign a gesture to make keyboard visible but the only way I could see was through the Braille commands. It was here that I found some strange anomalies. Listed in my Braille devices was my Sony WH1000 headphones. Sure enough the show/hide onscreen keyboard command was there in the list of available commands but nothing assigned to it. I'm wondering whether you may have paired something like those headphones which could be sending some kind of command to voiceover to hide the keyboard? I just removed it from my bluetooth devices and will see if that sorts out the problem. Very annoying as I quite like the sound of those headphones. Quite why they should show up as a Braille device is a bit of a mystery to me though? Let's hope that resolves things.CheersThuyOn 24 Nov 2023, at 04:50, Gabe Griffith wrote:Hi, Sorry if I was confusing. Re: Is anyone else having issues reading Kindle books on iOS using a braille display?
Hi Des and anyone else experiencing these issues. I too was having these problems and tried several Braille Displays and still the same problems with turning pages with the panning buttons with every Display including the Focus 40 that seemed to work ok for Mark. That got me thinking about changing some of the viewing options. I think Mark can see a bit, so I wondered if he might have increased the font size in his kindle viewing options. So i pressed the increase font size button a few times, and hey presto, the page turning seems to be working now. So give it a go and see if it works for you as well. Re: just a suggestion, Selecting on Iphone
Hi Ramy. Have you been able to put the text selection option into the rotor? If so, this should work in an email message, on a safari web page, in a note text field etc. It doesn't seem to work in the messages app if you are reading someone else's message, but if you are composing a message, it works in the edit field. So if you just want to select 2 words, first set the rotor to words, then swipe up or down to the word you want to start selecting from. Then turn the rotor to text selection. Now swipe up or down till it says word selection. Now swipe right and it will speak out the word to be selected. Swipe right again and it selects the next word. Now turn the rotor to edit. Now swipe up or down till it says copy. This copies the selection to the clipboard. Now go to the document or message you want to paste the selection into. You might need to double tap in the edit field to make sure that quick nav is turned off and you are ready to paste into the text area. You might have to double tap a couple of times to make sure you are either at the start or end of the field. Otherwise if you want to paste in the middle of the text, then turn the rotor to words, and swipe up or down to where you want to paste the selection. Now turn the rotor to edit and swipe up or down till it says paste. Finally double tap, and the selected text should be inserted at that point. Hope this explains ok. Hi Ramy. You can select text by including text selection in the rotor. You have to go into general / accessibility / voiceover / rotor. Make sure you double tap on it to check/select it. Once you rotor to text selection, swiping up or down goes through the selection types i.e character, word, line, heading and select all. Then double tap once you chosen which element to select by. The only slightly tricky thing is if you need to select from a certain point in the text. You have to navigate to that point using move by character, word or line. Hi Kawal. One workaround for this is to go into settings/general/accessibility/call audio routing and setting it to bluetooth rather than auto. If you don't have the bluetooth headset switched on, the audio still goes through the phone's earpiece as usual, but if the bluetooth headset is on, you can use them to make the call as expected. The focus, at least in my manual, never says a word about voiceover except for the iPhone. However, my display is listed under its manufacturer in the voiceover manual for the Macintosh for supported Braille displays. So, you might look in the Getting Started with VoiceOver in Apple's website and see if it's on the list. You first look under the manufacturer, and then it has the displays under that manufacturer that are supported. Re: help with voices and dates
Hi. Only just saw this, so sorry for the delay in replying. I'm guessing that you are talking about voices on the iphone? If so, then it's best to change the voice in the language section of general/accessibility/voiceover rather than in the date and time regional settings. So go to general, then accessibility, then voiceover, then language rotor, and select the languages you want to add to the language rotor. That way you can just switch between them and the date and time regional settings should be set to your default. Hope this helps? I finally unpaired the device and re-paired it from within Settings - Accessibility - VoiceOver - Braille. then I noticed VO said the Braille display was still disconnected. I had to power cycle everything and then I had to force the display to connect in the VO bluetooth menu; fwew, I finally got it all working. that was a real pain; I hope that doesn't happen again. Re: aThe slim Braille Pen.
Hi Kawal. I also have a Eurobraille Esys but with 12 cells. It's really good, but mine has been a bit unreliable and I've had to send it back 3 times for updating firmware and repairs. Also the note-taking functions are very basic and the diary crashes every so often, so I have to keep resetting it. My favourite setup at the moment is the Iphone with a Braille connect 12 and Riitek Keyboard stuck over the top of the connect 12 with velcro. It's a really compact setup with qwerty input and braille output. The other good thing about the Braille connect is that it has a standby mode and wakes up whenever the iphone comes on so you can see the caller id even when the speech is turned off. They used to do a 24 cell version of the Braille connect too, but Humanware never sold any in this country (UK), which is a real shame in my opinion. Yeah, I bought it through the app store the other day and it took some time just to download the file, but gives you a slightly misleading message about installing which is dimmed anyway. Eventually, once it's downloaded, it will bring up the installer. Hi Jessie. I have the BrailleConnect 12 and if it's anything like that model, you need to use the navigation keys (d1-d6). I wonder why organizations like DBS don't just give their client a macbook or a machbook pro and be done with it. then they whon't have to pay for Jay. and the client can use voice over which in my opinion has a shorter learning curve. I also recently asked a Vision teacher or V.I teacher and she answered that at leat 70=90 percent of note takers, and all other digital devices are not comopatible with mac os x. I would like to know what you guys think about this. and if there are any high school and college students who are blind or visually impaired, Is a Mac with voice over sufficient enough for all school work or do you still need a note taker? thank you -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: 64 bit or 32 bit Mac bootstrapped with W7
I don't think the question is whether the Mac hardware is capable of running 64 bit win7, I think I triggered the original concern by telling her that the win7 os would need to be 64 bit in order to make use of the full 8 gigs of RAM. Thus the issue is whether she has 64 bit version of Win7 installed on her bootcamp drive and if she is running 64 bit JAWS and any other applications on the Windows OS? She seems to think she is running W7 H P 32 bit - surely if this is a 64-bit motherboard it wont allow her to run W7 32-bit? Re: Moving apps on iPod Touch using the Mac
Hi David. I spent ages trying to move apps around and into folders etc, and it is doable on the iphone/ipod. It's quite easy to move an app by one slot either way in order to drop it into a folder or create a folder from two apps being superimposed. The way I deal with moving apps and folders is to shunt them onto a separate page so that they are the only 2 items on that page, then once I have all the apps that I need in the required folder, I can shift the entire folder onto an earlier page. Bear in mind that it will place the apps in the order in which you slot them into the folders. It's also easy if you only have one or two items on a page just to throw the app back out of the folder if you make a mistake. So if I want to order apps alphabetically, I just go into the folder and find the app I want, chuck it out of the folder, and place it back inside it again. That way, I know it's going to be the most recently added app in the list inside the folder. Hope this helps? Cheers Thuy On 06/07/2010, David Hole balubathebr...@gmail.com wrote: Hi everyone. Upon attaching the Nanno to my Windows iTunes PC, I discovered that I could generate the menu and items voice from any of my computer system's installed voices. As I have both ZoomText and Jaws installed on the computer in question, I have a wide variety of high quality SAPI 5 voices from which to choose. I was almost ready to make a selection when I discovered that there is an option to generate the Nanno's spoken menu and items synthesizer using VoiceOver. Generating spoken menus and items using VoiceOver via a Windows computer? Yep!!! You heard me right. Ever the Curious George, I selected this option. Imagine my delight to discover that after iTunes and the Nanno danced the Technology Tango, I found that my old love, Samantha, is the synthesized voice on my new Nanno. CHAPTER 4: So, instead of purchasing both a new MP3 player and a copy of RockBox, I will now use my new Nanno, graced with the presence of my beloved Samantha, to, as the saying should have gone, Run west, young man, run west. Oh! And for those of you who may be wondering why I simply don't use my iPhone 3GS as an MP3 player during my runs? It's because I can more easily protect the Nanno against sweat and damage. Also, I prefer to conserve as much battery power on my 3GS as possible. The End Mark -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: jumping to text in safari
Hi. I always use vo and F. It usually takes me to the right place, but doesn't always let me VO arrow around until I've done a say all command (vo A). In fact, it's great with gmail, when I've opened a conversation/thread: I just search for the phrase 'show original', then it takes me to the start of a message area. I usually lock the VO keys with VO and semicolon, then do the find with just the letter F, type in the phrase and press enter. Then Iget taken to the start of the message area, so I can just press the letter A to read to end. When the message is finished, I just type the letter G to find the next occurrence of the phrase, and A to read to end. This works really well for skimming through gmail conversations. Re: problems with itunes and custom settings for rip to mp3
Yes. I found the same problems too. I think it's only an issue with Voiceover, because when I mentioned it to a sighted friend, he told me that his settings took hold. I was able to get round it by mouse clicking with the VO-Shift-Space and clicking on each of the settings as well as the OK button, and even then, sometimes only one parameter would change, and I needed to go back into the import settings several times until the settings took hold. You might also need to click on the desired popup checkbox, then the neighbouring one, and then back to the one you require in order to make it stick? Hope you can get it sorted? The VM is an old one that was set up with Leopard and Fusion 2, but the upgrade to Fusion 3 seemed to be fine and the Virtual machine boots up and automatically installed the latest VMware tools, which has messed up the JAWS video intercept, but I'm hoping that will be easy enough to solve if only my keyboard would work? For the most part, everything remains accessible. However, when running and using your virtual machine, there is no longer a scroll area. Thus, you cannot VO to the area and start using the keyboard to control the VM. Instead, it is necessary to highlight the virtual machine window, turn voiceover off, and hit command plus G to direct input to the virtual machine. After this, turn voiceover back on, and everything works as expected. Note: I seem to have a similar problem even when running win XP in full screen mode. Voiceover does not seem to yield keyboard control initially to the virtual machine. To fix this, turn VO off when you highlight your virtual machine window for the first time. Next, turn it on again, and everything works from there on out. Note: You can even command tab to other applications, and when you come back, the keyboard will control your virtual machine as expected. Re: Logging into Gmail
Hi Scott. I use gmail and it works fine with the mail app on the iphone through imap. You can get around the captcha problem with solona.net. Once you're into your mail setings you will have to make sure that imap is enabled. Also, I find that the 'basic html' view is better and you can go straight to that with mail.google.com/mail/h/ Hope this helps? Although my password seems to work fine for sending e-mail from Apple Mail, it doesn't seem to allow incoming mail. So, my plan was to access the website and see if Mail was actually appearing on the site, but it won't let me login with the password I have been using for a while. Of course the other problem is I had to get help with the damned visual verification since the spoken bit didn't work as expected. So, is there another way to reset a password without needing the visual verification crap? I did get to a reset page and oddly enough after my wife typed in the letters required, it was to send me an e-mail on how to reset the password, but incredibly, it never showed up. My entire goal was to setup imap instead of pop and maybe I should have just left well enough alone. :) Any thoughts? tnx, --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: introduction and a question
Hi Anna. Fusion is definitely way better than parallels. I did manage to get parallels to work with jaws some time ago, but the virtual machine ran very slowly. If I remember this correctly, I first installed windows through bootcamp and installed jaws also through bootcamp. Then once parallels was running, I told it to use the bootcamp installation as its virtual machine. I think that doing things in that order meant that jaws could run properly. I'm afraid my memory on all this is a bit hazy as I quickly gave up on parallels and opted for fusion which seems to work a lot quicker and is more accessible. Also worth noting that because of the jaws activation method, you may need to reactivate every time you change major parameters such as ram memory allocation, because jaws thinks it's a completely different computer and deactivates itself! Very annoying! That's why a lot of people recommend wineyes, because it doesn't have the activation issues. Hope this helps. Looks like switching to Fusion makes the most sense. Do I have to uninstall and reinstall Windows, or is uninstalling Parallels and installing Fusion enough?
