Well, Lorie, welcome to the group. As for me, I'm Barefooted Ray (cause that's how I always am inside and outside too when possible. As for me, I just got an Apple tV box and love it. id use the VO quick start guide at first but have been using VO on my iPhone since 2011 so much of it was familiar. I do find myself going back over sections of the VO help materials and each time it makes more sense. Steep learning curve but repetition helps a lot. Welcome to the list. I'm glad you are having such an easy transition - it took me forever to feel comfortable with Voiceover on the Mac, and even longer to feel that it is (mostly) better than Windows. Wait... Can you have longer than forever? Sure, why not? Anyway, welcome aboard, and feel free to ask any questions you have. Hello Janine, You will find the people on this list to be some of the most helpful people in the world. They put up with all of my crazy questions. I'm sure if I go back to my bookmarks, I can find some of the material they sent me initially. The Mac is an interesting transition and once you get the hang of it, a very simple machine to deal with. You don't have to deal with all of the windows bugs the registry crap etc. Pam Francis On Feb 11, 2014, at 11:25 AM, Jenine Stanley dragonwalke...@gmail.com wrote: thanks Alex, Unfortunately, I’m getting a lot of 404 errors on the AppleVis site. Jenine, It's CJ of CJ Surnow fame from many moons ago @ GDD. I'm glad to see you on the list. I hope you Kent are well. Also, glad to see another fellow traveler on the Macbook trail. I've been pretty happy with mine, since my wife gifted me with one back in 2010. Actually, got a new one for my birthday this year, so I guess I'm pretty committed. Can you contact Applevis with examples of these broken links? Use the contact form on the website, and your message will go to the entire website team so they can have a look at what is going on. Sometimes, pages will be taken down if they are deemed to be breaking rules (such as discussions of not-yet-released iOS or OSX updates). Podcasts should all be working, though, so any non-working links you can find would be good to know about. Rather than just give you the answer, here is your chance to learn about searching the archives. This particular topic comes up often so if you search the list you'll probably find what you need. Hello Paul, This is wrong. I can use Focus 40 FS braille display in VMWare fusion with no problems. How are you connecting? The issue could be related to the method of connection. if you are successfully connecting to the Mac and then you need check your Fusion setup. Re: Two questions about virtual machines and a brief intro
I must also add that if you want to connect using bluetooth (as I connect my Eurobraille via bluetooth in Fusion latest version) there is support within fusion to connect your debice virtually but you have to locate the bluetooth settings in windows and connect your braille display. Then in jaws you have to make sure you locate the correct port so your braille display is shown there. It's a while since I did it but I'm also sure that you have to tell Fusion that your bluetooth receiver that the Mac uses to make sure that it's shown in fusion settings in the USB devices. Hope that isn't too complicated. Kawal. On 17 Aug 2012, at 09:41 AM, Sean Murphy mhysnm1...@gmail.com wrote: Hello Paul, This is wrong. Hello Paul, No problems. I use the Focus 40 USB version with no problems. If you don't connect the USB device to VMWare, then the Guess will not recognise it. Re: Two questions about virtual machines and a brief intro
hello, I run Kurzweil 1000 version 11.03 (I haven't updated that particular software in a while) under Windows 7 in a VMWare Fusion virtual machine and have no problems. I need to update to version four of VMWare Fusion for it all to run under Mountain Lion, but from what I hear others have also had no issues with it. Re: Two questions about virtual machines and a brief intro
Hello Damashe, First, if you are wanting to exicute the installation and full operation of Windows on the Mac, I would highly recommend VMware Fusion. Reviewing the archives will provide a thorough set of directions that will help you learn how to install Windows, as should the product web site. I'm not an expert and in no way consider myself highly technical, but I have been able to install and run Windows within 25 minutes of reading following the instructions others have kindly posted. If you purchase Fusion, and insert a university into the college name you will get a 50% discount, which is a great thing. I have been able to install and effectively run Kurzweil 1000, as well as Duxbury 10.7. Moreover, after initial setup, JFW11 has run very well with no problems on my machine. Once you get your virtual machine configured, make a snapshot that you can refer to when you need to virtually reformat. :) Note you will need considerable hard drive space (at least I do). I have roughly 40GB set aside for my virtual machine. If you need any other help or if you wish to discuss this further feel free to reply - cheers. Re: Two questions about virtual machines and a brief intro
ONe thing I'd like to mention before you put money into VMWare. There is an alternative called Virtualbox. It's interface is not accessible, but it has full terminal support, so you can set things up that way and never need to touch the interface. As far as I know, it is free, and works just fine. I have not tested either product yet, but I wanted to make you aware of this option in case you wanted to give it a shot. Note that, on the mac, terminal is the same thing as the windows command line, shell prompt, dos prompt, or whatever you want to call it. RE: Two questions about virtual machines and a brief intro
Hello Alex. I'm using Windows 7 in VM Fusion. Yes, In many instances it can take a minute or two to recognize pages. On the other hand, my wife has Windows XP running in Bootcamp and pages are recognized in a matter of seconds. There are a couple of other things you should know. Focus Braille Drivers do not load in the Virtual Machine and Freedom Scientific is not willing to help resolve the issue because they don't support running JAWS or any of their applications in Virtual machines. Finally, any time you change the configuration of your Virtual Machine you lose an activation. Freedom Scientific is not willing to issue additional keys very often. On the plus side, You can install Windows without sighted assistance. You can also add printers and read and write documents stored on the Mac side. In addition, because your virtual machine is just an image, it's easy to restore it from a backup. So you can see that thare are tradeoffs. After considering all of them, I'm willing to switch over to Bootcamp for the increased performance. I'll use Drop Box whenever I need to move folders from the Mac side to the Windows side. Re: Two questions about virtual machines and a brief intro
One word: NVDA. Go to http://www.nvda-project.org to find out more and download this program, but it's basically a free screen reader that is updated regularly, has no licensing or driver problems, and... well, it's free! After all, do you really need to pay hundreds for a screen reader on an OS you use seldom enough that you can run it virtually? Maybe you do, I'm not trying to start anything, but it seems like a valid question. If you can get by with a free screen reader for the times you do need Windows, you could save a lot of money, time, and aggravation by not dealing with jfw, which is not even supported on virtual machines. To be fair I have not yet tried nvda on a vm, but I have not heard of anyone having problems with it on the development or support email lists. Now, off to research virtualbox so I can have a leg to stand on regarding nvda on a vm... On Aug 15, 2012, at 10:38 PM, Damashe Thomas damashe.tho...@gmail.com wrote: Ok, thanks Paul. I am very familiar with NVDA. I have used it as well as Serotek's SATOGO also. But since I expect my windows use to be very light, I will be chosing a much cheaper or even free option once my license for jaws runs out. I’m using Windows 7 in VM Fusion. Yes, In many instances it can take a minute or two to recognize pages. On the other hand, my wife has Windows XP running in Bootcamp and pages are recognized in a matter of seconds. There are a couple of other things you should know. Focus Braille Drivers do not load in the Virtual Machine and Freedom Scientific is not willing to help resolve the issue because they don’t support running JAWS or any of their applications in Virtual machines. Finally, any time you change the configuration of your Virtual Machine you lose an activation. Freedom Scientific is not willing to issue additional keys very often. On the plus side, You can install Windows without sighted assistance. You can also add printers and read and write documents stored on the Mac side. In addition, because your virtual machine is just an image, it’s easy to restore it from a backup. So you can see that thare are tradeoffs. After considering all of them, I’m willing to switch over to Bootcamp for the increased performance. I’ll use Drop Box whenever I need to move folders from the Mac side to the Windows side. Hi guys my name is alberto I have been on this list for a while, but haven't contributed much to the list since I don't own a Mac yet. Many of the members I've seen so far on here probably know me from 3 lists I run myself. I am going to be a little more active now since I am going to be getting one when mountain lion is released and hopefully a macbook pro refresh. I am currently using a PC, but I've been wanting to get a Mac for a long time. I haven't been able because I have been a little low on money. I am a college student and I am sure many of you know how that is. I don't have any questions for the list just yet, but I will soon. I will continue reading the posts from the experts for now, but I will answer or try to answer any questions that pop up in reference with the iPhone. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Hello Larry, I'm using iWork09 with all updates applied. I would never use Pages just for reading, I prefer TextEdit for that. I can achieve most things I want using Pages, but there are problems. VoiceOver Find commands (find next, find previous, etc for bold, italic, colour change, font change, and so on) don't work at all, but VO-t will provide the information. As far as I'm concerned, this is the worst problem with Pages. Intro a Question
Hello All, I wanted to introduce myself, as a new MacBook user member of the list. I've used DOS then Windows, since '89 or '90 with JAWS. However, I recently made the switch to a MacBook Pro VoiceOver I am loving it so far. Also, I wanted to know if anyone has used Band-in-a-Box for the Mac with VoiceOver? If so, I was wondering what kind of results they had gotten? I used to use the program in Windows with JAWS, but it took a lot of scripts to make it happen. That's about it I look forward to reading your posts learning with you. Hello Everyone, My name is Ezzy, and I am new to the Mac Visionaries list. I am a college student and am also new to the Mac. I had a few questions that I was hoping someone could answer: 1. What exactly do I need to create a mail record? I've tried setting up my Gmail account, but I believe I keep doing something wrong. 2. On the Internet, how can I browse by specific elements (for example, by headings)? Thanks in advance. Have a wonderful day! I can answer your question about browsing the internet. To browse by headings press control/option,command/H for headings. For tables: control/option/command T. For visited links: control/option/command V. Also you might find the web item rotor handy. Press control/option U and then VO right, left, and up and down arrows to see elements on the page divided into categories such as links, visited links, tables, etc. Press enter on the element you would like to go to. In order to get a complete list of all the elements on a web page, press control option I. You can then begin typing any word you might be looking for and you will move to that in the list. Hello Ezzy: There is also something handy called the web item roter which you can set up to allow you to move quickly to links, headers, frames etc. You can invoke the roter by pressing VO-keys U. Re: Intro and Questions
Hi, there is yet another way to navigate by headings, links, etc. press the left and right arrows together to turn on quick nav. this will allow you to navigate without using the vo keys which are control option. so instead of using control option right arrow to move to the next element, you just hit right arrow. It will let you edit text fields, doesn't interfere with the letters. When in quick nav mode. you can press the right and up arrows together to go right on the rotor described before, and the left and up arrows to go left. then, you just hit down or up arrow and you will be in the next of that element; eg tables, links, etc. You are just there, don't have to press enter to find it. Something else with quick nav. Pressing the right and down arrows together lest you interact just like control option shift down arrow, and the left and down arrows together stops interacting like control option shift up arrow. Oh, another method I forgot is the trackpad commander. If you are using a macbook or have a trackpad, you can turn it on by pressing control option and turning two fingers on the trackpad clockwise like a dial. then, you can navigate by flicking left or right or by moving your finger down the trackpad and touching the different elements on the screen. to use the rotor, turn two fingers clock or anti clockwise on the trackpad until you find the element you want, then flick up or down and you will be on the previous or next instance of that element just like with quick nav. also, to interact, flick right with two fingers and to stop interacting flick left with two fingers. hope this helps and welcome to the list and to the world of the wonderful mac and voiceover. rafaela El 23/11/2010, a las 22:40, Ezzy Bueno escribió: Thank you so much, Carolyn! Intro - soon to be new MAC user
Hi all, Some of you may already recognize me from several other technology discussion lists and others may not. Well, I took the plunge last evening and ordered an iMac which hopefully will be here tomorrow. After moving over to the apple IOS platform for communications back this past January, I've been impressed with Apples commitment to produce more accessibility in their products. I made the decision to move to the MAC OSX platform because of many recent events in the audio and music territory but am impressed with other new actions coming about like bringing gestures to navigation to all MAC users. Unfortunately, I will not be totally leaving the PC/Windows environment since my job as a Software Development Manager requires me to use that platform since the agency I work for is strict on it's standards. Because of this, I have to keep Windows available at home - either running under Fusion or on my old run down XP Pro machine or even both. I felt it was important for me to move to the MAC at this time to experience all the new comings from Apple as they come out now in each release of OSX and versions of software such as the iLife 11 products - particularly GarageBand and it's new found accessibility. I've joined this group to hopefully learn more about techniques, available accessible software and maybe get back in touch with some old aquaintences I noticed are members on this list. I look forward to learning a new platform and learning from all of you. Hi Vince, I'm Allison from New York. I recently took the plunge and switched to the Mac in April. I can't say that I'm good at operating it yet, but I have learned from all the folks on this list. I still have my Windows PCs around just in case I need to use Windows again. I don't miss viruses, spyware etc, but I have to use a Windows PC at work and rely on Window-Eyes. I think that Apple has done so much for improving and out of the box accessibility. I am happy to meet you, Vince, and I hope you enjoy your journey. Re: Intro - soon to be new MAC user
hello Vince. I am also glad that I took the mac plunge last year. I did it quite a bit before the onset of total blindness. I went from reading large print to listening to my screen. the funny thing was, I was already looking at voiceover because I was getting nasty headaches from trying to read large print. all it took for me to switch from one to another was a 2 finger combo (command+F5). after onset, I was exclusively in read screen mode by ear. I haven't slowed down much. I have had to get a helper app for some apps that aren't entirely accessible. other than that, its been well worth the $800 I paid for the used mac and the $29.00 for te OS X 10.6 install disk. on the whole, thats still cheaper than a windows box+OS+jaws. -Eric On Nov 9, 2010, at 6:38 PM, Allison Manzino wrote: Hi Vince, I'm Allison from New York. Intro and nooby questions
Morning all, Some of you probably know me from other lists and I've joined this one being an owner of a new Macbook Pro. I have been a JFW user for going on 14 years now but have never used a Mac until 2 days ago. I'm wondering if folks can give me a good starting point for orienting myself to this new way of doing things. Are there some good pointers for familiarizing yourself with Voice Over in addition to the included tutorial? Any getting started pointers would be appreciated or tips / tricks to help the transition from the windows JFW world to Mac. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My professional area of expertese is Network Engineering and I have about 20 years of experience in topics ranging from traffic engineering for large carrier networks, the finer points of running highly available large scale content provider environments and can pretty much offer tips on technologies ranging from your home wireless router on up to the latest Juniper M series or Cisco carrier class products so if there's any networking / connectivity questions I wouldn't mind adding my $.02. Thanks in advance for any pointers and I'll try to keep the rooky questions to a minimum and will use google first before asking the obvious. Re: Intro and nooby questions
Hello Scott, I too am trying to make friends with a new MacBookPro and probably need to pretend that my XP machine is not here when I'm using email or the web. I found the voiceOver documentation lacking in that instead of describing the regular system commands for performing functions, they document commands that are identical, yet unique to voiceOver which involve more key strokes. One example is VO+m to activate the menu which takes three fingers on two hands while control+f2 accomplishes the same thing. I also want as little to do as possible with the special VO cursor. I'm not sure about interacting yet. It seems analogous to JFW placing web pages into a buffer and activating the virtual cursor by default, except that you don't have to issue a four key combination (control+option+shift+downArrow) or a two finger flick via the trackpad commander to make this happen. Same deal with text. I have a lot to learn but the voiceOver manual describes having to interact with text and use five finger key strokes (slight exaggeration) to read anything, and I miss having the same keys available to everyone else such as arrow keys without quicknav or locking VO mode which essentially changes the keyboard to navigate around. So many have switched from XP so I know there's a better way. Anyway Sarah recently posted a site listing many standard system keyboard commands. Its apparently not complete because control+f2 is not listed, but you may want to check URL: http://www.danrodney.com/mac/ Also everyone recommends these instructional podcasts created by vision Australia, but the few I listened to didn't have any information that is not already documented in the voiceOver getting started manual. I too will be following this thread closely,, but I know I need to just start leaving my XP machines off and do as much as I can on the Mac in order to learn how to make navigation feel less cumbersome than it seems right now. Take care. Re: Intro and nooby questions
Welcome Scott, great th see you on here. I suppose you know how to interact with tables? Also you will see a command key on the left of the space bar. So for instance, if you want to copy any bit of text, you can hold the command key, high light the text with shift command (let's say if you are in an e-mail, then press command C to copy, command X to cut or command V to paste. I'm not sure what you can do with your Mac Book Pro. If you have the Iphone, then you may be familiar with the track commander gestures but I've not familiar with them yet. If I can assist you further, then I will do so although I've only been using the Mac Book since May. You can also use Windows virtually too which I do to connect my windows mobile but that is quite advanced. Kawal. Hi Scott: First of all. Keep in mind that Jaws isn't like Voice over, and Snow Leopard isn't like Windows. In orther words, they'll behave differently, so take all your preconceived expectations, and shelve them. You will be able to learn what is necessary without expectations. Second, go to www.blindcooltech.com, and download all podcasts by Mike Arrigo. There are 13 of them, and they are wonderful. Then go to www.myfirstmac.com and read the very helpful articles. Scott, congrats on the new MBP. Good to see you here from the MSP list. I got my MBP back in December and really do love it. At first, patience will be your best bet. From what I know of you from other lists, you will have no trouble at all.Have you made the jump to iPhone yet, or just the MBP? I still have my HTC Touch Pro and am waiting for Sprint to get the iPhone. When that happens, I'm there. Unless something astounding happens with Android's accessibility between now and then, where Android leaves the iPhone in the dust. I still have serious phone confusion, so I'm sticking with what I have for the time being. Thanks for the reply Cody. I received it with my apple mail program, but I'm still having trouble with this list. Can anyone tell me why I didn't receive the post I sent, in my apple mail. Re: intro and question
That's a lot but monitors can be very expencive as well. On May 25, 2010, at 12:00 PM, Chris Blouch wrote: This problem was covered earlier this month. Short version is that without a monitor the Mini forever scans for one, bringing the system to a crawl and causing other bad behavior. One trick was to hook up a TV adapter to make the mini think there was a monitor hooked up, but that stopped working in more recent models as support for analog displays was dropped from the DVI connection. The next trick was to get a mini to VGA adaptor and then a VGA to NTSC or PAL (TV) adaptor. That makes it think there is a monitor hooked up when really it's just a converter box. I provided links and prices in my previous post: http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries@googlegroups.com/msg21162.html but it was roughly $50-60 for the whole rig. Re: intro.
Well, for what it's worth, I'll extend my welcome to you, I'm a fairly newcomer to the list as well (September '08), but have been using a Mac since getting an iBook in 2005, using zoom, then later the predecessor of VoiceOver, called spoken interface. I then started using voiceover when Tiger came out a year or so later. Now I'm rocking out with a Macbook Pro running Snow leopard (10.6.2). I love this list, I've learned so much, even though I'm a part time voiceOver user, mostly relying on Zoom, then switching to VO when my eyes get tired, as I do have some residual vision. So, since you haven't made the jump, hang out here and learn, than when you get the chance to go to an Apple Store you can play around with what you've learned. Good luck, welcome, and happy switching! :) On Mar 2, 2010, at 12:52 PM, ian mcnamara wrote: hello all my name is ian mcnamara i am 26 years old and i live in birmingham in the u k. i currently own windows seven but am thinking of getting a mac in future so thought i would join this list to learn about it. thanks very much ian mcnamara. skype heeman2730 -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: intro.
welcome to the list Ian. I have been a mac user myself since sometime in January and I must say that I really love my mac too and definitely prefer it over my Windows pc. I am using my mac 90% of the time now and my next goal is to buy another mac but a mac mini this time and definitely get rid of this slow pc I've got. I am sure you will like the mac when you do get a chance to play with one, you should definitely give it a go, you won't regret it. Take care for now, Lyn Twinny On Mar 2, 2010, at 8:21 PM, Rafael Bejarano wrote: Hi Ian, Welcome to the list. I suggest that you spend a few hours interacting with a Macintosh at your nearest Apple store, in order to determine whether it offers advantages over Windows. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. I have found that Windows continues to be useful in a few cases (e.g., some websites are not accessible with Safari, and Explorer for Macintosh is not accessible with VoiceOver). For the most part, however, I much prefer the Mac over Windows. Re: intro.
Hi Ian! I've been using a mac since may of 2008 and have come to really love it. I think its very easy to use and you can have the basics out of the way in just a few hours. Good luck with it. If you have skype or other chat programs you might chat with some of us on this list to ask questions. That helped me quite a bit in the beginning. Take care! Re: intro
Hi Carolyn I'm not sure how helpful this will be for you, but if you have iTunes or VLC open, and you press F8 (or maybe F8 with the function key, depending on how you have your MacBook set up), iTunes will start playing whatever media you were last working with. I assume this works with other media players, as well. Pressing F8 again stops the playback. It might be something to try, if the other suggestions don't work for you. In any case, I have a silly question: I'm hearing impaired, so don't really hear my mac when it's on. With my pc, there is a little noise, but also, I can use the disk-door to see if the power's on. With the Mac slot loader, there's no way for me to know. Any ideas? TIA Carolyn Haas CH:) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: intro
well, one thing you could do is put a cd in the drive. may not be the best way but if your mac is on, the cd will go in otherwise it won't. to eject a cd, hit the key to the wright of the f12 key and hold that down untill the cd comes out. Re: intro
Hi. Do you use hearing aids with telecoils, by any chance? If so, turn the telecoils on and put your ear near your Mac. You should hear the unit working fairly loudly if it is on, and little or nothing if it is off. HTH.
