Re: getting new mac, best way to migrate data apps etc

2021-07-21 Thread Brad Snyder
I don’t see how this would be any different from using a Time Machine backup.
You would still be using an update from an Intel-based Mac, to restore/setup a
M1 Mac.
No matter how you go about it, the 2 systems are completely different.
In my opinion this would be asking for trouble, but you are welcome to do
whatever you wish.

Re: getting new mac, best way to migrate data apps etc

2021-07-20 Thread Brad Snyder
Well, I store most of my data in iCloud and/or Dropbox. For data that is on my
Mac mini, such as my iTunes Music library, I copy my User/Home folder to an
external USB drive, then import it onto the new Mac.
My Mac mini is my primary Mac. I do not keep music or other archived data on
my MacBook Pro. When using the MacBook Pro, I rely on iCloud and music from
cloud sharing.

I suspect the Passport is formatted in NTFS, which is OK, but it seems to have
some file size limitations.

That depends on how you format the external HD.

I suggest using XFAT, if you want an external HD that can be read and written
to, by both Mac and Windows machines.

I store all my data in either iCloud or Dropbox, which makes it available on
all my connected devices.

This makes setting up a new device really easy.

I suspect the Passport is formatted in NTFS, which is OK, but it seems to have
some file size limitations.

Time Machine is a great tool to have in your toolbox.

I have used it to restore my old 2012 Mac mini when the HD began to fail.

The Time Machine backup restored the Mac mini to where it was before the HD
failed, and it was like nothing had happened.

It worked great.

Yes it does, but when Donna used a Time Machine backup to setup her new M1 Mac,
everything on her new Mac’s HD was wiped, and replaced with the backup from the

Re: getting new mac, best way to migrate data apps etc

2021-07-20 Thread Brad Snyder
Yes it does, but when Donna used a Time Machine backup to setup her new M1 Mac,
everything on her new Mac’s HD was wiped, and replaced with the backup from the
older Mac, and this is what I believe rendered her new M1 Mac unusable.

RE: getting new mac, best way to migrate data apps etc

2021-07-20 Thread skipper8218
I store my data in Dropbox, iCloud, and Microsoft OneDrive, but I also backup
data to an external hard drive.

Can I use the same hardrive for media and document backups for Mac and Windows?

Please note that I am just talking about documents, music, and MP4 video files
and not system backups or images.

Thanks.

Re: getting new mac, best way to migrate data apps etc

2021-07-20 Thread Brad Snyder
In my opinion, the proper use of a Time Machine backup, is to restore a backup
made on an individual machine, to the machine that created the backup, in the
event that the machine that created the backup, suffers a hard drive failure.
Restoring a Time Machine backup to a different machine than the machine that
created the backup, may have unintended and devastating consequences, and
should not be done as a matter of practice.

It is also my opinion that a new Mac should be setup as a new Mac from scratch,
and data and application should be moved to the new Mac, after the new Mac has
been setup as a new machine. This may seem to be more time consuming and less
convenient, but it is a much more prudent and safer way to proceed, as I am
sure Donna will agree.

RE: getting new mac, best way to migrate data apps etc

2021-07-20 Thread skipper8218
I'm glad.
I found it much easier to create an account on the Mac because my iPhone was
already in the cloud.
Setting up the Mac this way was easier than Windows.

You make a good point. What I ended up doing, once I got the replacement Mac,
was just copying my documents folder to iCloud, and then copying the whole
folder to my Mac. It was actually super easy, and now the Mac and iCloud
folders are connected, so when I make a change on my Mac, it’s reflected in the
cloud. In the end, I was really happy with this solution.
Cheers,
Donna

Re: getting new mac, best way to migrate data apps etc

2021-07-20 Thread Brad Snyder
Using the Migration Assistant to migrate data and applications is different
than restoring from a Time Machine backup.
When restoring from a Time Machine backup, the destination machine’s hard drive
is wiped, and the contents of the backup are written to the drive.
Since a backup from an Intel-based Mac is incompatible with an M1 Mac, the M1
Mac is rendered unusable when restoring a backup from an Intel-based Mac.
I believe this is what happened to Donna’s M1 Mac, and at least one other on
this list.

2021-07-20 Thread skipper8218
I think we should encourage the use of Apple's iCloud for backups and recovery.
Once I get the right adapters and become more comfortable with the Mac, I may
backup via time machine and just restore to that Mac only.

I used migration assistant moving from an Intel MacBook Pro to an M1 MacBook

The M1 Macs are the future.
Conflicts between the old and new are to be expected.

Re: getting new mac, best way to migrate data apps etc

2021-07-20 Thread Brad Snyder
Since you are most likely migrating from an older Intel-based Mac, to a new M1
Mac, you should be aware that the 2 systems are very different and not
compatible.
A couple of users on this list have tried using a Time Machine backup from
their older Intel-based Mac, to setup their new M1 Mac, and the results were
devastating. In both of these cases, the new M1 Mac was rendered unusable,,
and had to be returned to Apple.

Transferring your data and applications using the Migration assistant may be a
safer option to consider.

HTH.

2021-07-20 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Alia,

I know that using Migration assistant has worked for some people, but at least
a couple of us have ended up having to get replacement Macs because of this
issue. In addition to the migration breaking Voiceover, when I went to erase
everything and reinstall the OS, I was unable to do so. I could erase the
disk, but was not allowed to reinstall the OS, which pretty much left me dead
in the water. When I googled it, I read that this is a known issue with the M1
Macs. So, even though not using Migration Assistant is a royal pain, were I
you, I wouldn’t chance it.
Just my $.02,
