Instrument Keyboard Assignments in Garage Band

2023-09-29 Thread Kelly Ford
Hi,

Does anyone know if there is a list of what instruments are assigned to what
keyboard letters for instruments in Garage Band? I’m talking about situations
where the instrument doesn’t typically have a keyboard or notes that can be
assigned based on letters.

Drums are the best example of this. There are dozens of drum kits and within
each, multiple drums and other instruments.

Re: Garage Band Basic Recording

2022-02-17 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
Did you try to press p?
Are you sure that space stops the recording and that you can’t record after
what you have recorded?
I can’t find any keyboard command for pausing in recording.

Garage Band Basic Recording

2022-02-17 Thread Kelly Ford
Hi,

I want to use Garage Band on the Mac to do some basic audio recording of some
text I need to read. I understand how to get the recording established, tracks
and such.

If I press r, that will start recording but how to I pause/stop and then start
recording at the end of where I left off? If I press space it does stop
recording but also starts playback so unless I let that run to the end, I end
up recording over myself.

Am I late to the party or is Garage band now a horror show to use?

2018-03-26 Thread Des Delgadillo
All,

What’s up with Garage band? Whenever I try and use it, I always end up quitting
out of frustration. I’ll be in the smart controls, for instance, and it will
suddenly jump me to another part of the window and won’t let me go back until I
switch applications and then go back. I can’t even arm tracks for recording
before it does this, let alone cut and move regions around.

Is there something I’m missing, or an alternative? All I want to do is find a
nice recording program to get song ideas out of my head before I forget them,
which happens often.

I do have PT but I’m looking for something a little more simplistic, at least
for this stage of the writing process.

Thanks.

Re: new with garage band

2017-08-28 Thread Scott Berry
I will need a little more information to help you.

1. Are you trying to add loops or instruments prebuilt in to Garage Band?

2. Are you using instruments of your own?

Re: Garage Band 10, Quantize a MIDI Track

I thought it used to be just the letter “q” if you were in the track. But the
problem with that is you need to ensure that your quantizing correctly first I
wouldn’t just quantize a track that could be detramental.

Garage Band 10, Quantize a MIDI Track

2017-03-23 Thread 'Jim Fettgather' via MacVisionaries
Hello.

Coming to grips with the latest Garage Band in Sierra, I am wondering if
there is a hotkey to immediately quantize a track after recording it.

I have looked through lists of hotkeys but have not found anything so far.

Thanks for any guidance.

Garage Band Resources?

2017-01-22 Thread Kat DeNicola
Hi. I did a search for posts on garage band, but most of them are quite
dated. Are there any podcasts or tutorials out there for using the latest
version of it with voiceover on the mac? I couldn't find much, especially
anything current, and I've never used it before so I don't know how much
change there has been between versions. I was playing around with it trying
to make a ringtone, and it wasn't playing loops consistently, and then I
couldn't figure out how to mix the tracks. So part of this is just not
knowing what I'm doing, added to not knowing how to then do it with
voiceover. Any direction towards appropriate resources would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks!

Re: Main Stage or Garage band when playing live?

2017-01-06 Thread 'Roland Zitzke' via MacVisionaries
Yes, this will work.
One word about your keyboard though.
GB has somewhat limited support for Midi controllers other then the notes
and pitch bend. Therefore you'll probably need to really use the arrow keys
on your notebook rather than the track select buttons of your keyboard. One
exception to this which i know are the M-Audio keyboards. They come with a
GB plugin supporting these controls allowing you to select the track -
which is the instrument in your scenario right from the keyboard itself
which is somewhat more convenient during a live performance.

Re: Main Stage or Garage band when playing live?

2017-01-06 Thread 'Roland Zitzke' via MacVisionaries
Hi, this is an interesting question.
MainStage is certainly the way to go for live performances. It has many
features tailored around this task.
However, I am not sure about the VO accessibility of MainStage.
I have never actually used it but on the logic accessibility group I
remember people saying that it has some shortcomings.
Therefore: personally I would use GB and setup tracks for each instrument.
Then you can use the arrow keys to switch them. This will work for one MIDI
input. If you have multiple controllers I doubt that GB will let you assign
them to different tracks at the same time. This would not be a problem with
Logic.
Logic is the big brother of GB and it also has some extra features in terms
of accessibility.
 /Roland

Main stage or garage band? I will not move between many instruments

can I get them in accessible way and can navigate through them on main
stage or garage band?

Proper podcasts using Garage Band from scratch using El Capitan.

2016-03-11 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Does anyone have any podcasts which helps one to understand how to use Garage
band on the Mac and I phone please? I want to know how to use Garage band
properly and to be able to mix soft instruments. I have tried connecting my
Yamaha Tyros 4 keyboard to my I Mac but it won’t accept it for some reason.
Anyway, if I could play stuff using the I Mac then that would be good.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

I am really hoping someone else can help you find the location. I
believe you when you say you can use the multi track function. I do
not use Garageband but did study it while attending college.
I found this article that may help:

https://support.apple.com/kb/PH1914?locale=en_US

What version are you running?

2016-03-07 Thread erik burggraaf
Huh. I've done a little more digging and discovered a forum post where people
say they got it to work. I also found some tehnical reference to saving as a
multi-track project, but I wasn't able to find that option and it's location
wasn't stated.

I need this. It's pretty central to the way I record, but I can't pay for
protools to ghet the funtionality.

How can we beat this into shape?

Thanks,

Erik,

GB only does single track recording regardless of the multi track
setting. I am not sure why that setting even exists. This is why Sonar
or ProTools is used for multi track recording projects. As far as I
know you have to record each track separately in GB.

help recording multiple tracks in garage band.

2016-03-07 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi all,

I'm trying to record in garage band using my edirol m16dx mixer. I have two
tracks properly configured in my mixer. Each track records fine individually
but I need to be able to record them together.

I used the tutorial found here.
https://support.apple.com/kb/PH1914?locale=en_US
<https://support.apple.com/kb/PH1914?locale=en_US>

I checked both record boxes and checked enable multitrack recording in the
track menu but gb will only record one at a time.

Am I missing something?

Thanks,

Erik Burggraaf

It is for audio editing only. However, one neat thing you can do is to edit
videos in the Apple format. Like cut out sections of film etc.

Re: Is Amadeus Proeasier to use than Garage Band?

2016-01-04 Thread Matthew Dierckens
Amadeus Pro is incredibly easy to use, and easy to set up and start recording
and editing files.
There are a lot of great knowledge of the software, so don’t hesitate to ask.

God bless.

Actually, I'm at his pro can be fairly tricky and unintuitive to use at first
especially when doing editing work. You would find it very helpful to go
through Jonathan motions Amadeus pro to Torio. I use that and I don't think I
could've figured out Amadeo's without it. The cursor routing the editing
cursors all that is very confusing without some guidance. You can hunt up
Jonathan's tutorial at Mohsin.org. Cost

Speaking of the new GarageBand, does anyone know how to get the automatic thing

Wow! In less than five minutes I've gotten further in Amadeus Pro than I ever
got in GB. Have successfully recorded a test track, and even added some
reverb. Thanks, Matthew for saving me some very frustrating hours trying to
figure out how to do this in GB. :)

Re: Garage Band: how to change key with in the middle of a song or wherever needed

2015-11-18 Thread Vaughn Brown
I do not think this is accessible. Have you tried putting the cursor
where you want the key change then inserting a new key? Otherwise
you'll have to change it yourself by playing in a different key.

Re: Garage Band: how to change key with in the middle of a song or wherever needed

2015-11-18 Thread Scott Berry
Hi Vaughn,

I have one other question for you. Do you know how to move the drummer around?
For example, I have it started where I want it but I want just certain
instruments to play for a little while and then the drummer to pick back up
again? I tried dragging and dropping my drummer track to the appropriate bar
and I also tried copying and pasting but this doesn’t work.

2015-11-18 Thread Vaughn Brown
Perhaps someone has a better answer because what you are doing should
be working for the drummer. Have you tried cutting instead of copying?
Or deleting the bars where you don't want the drummer after copying
and pasting?

Re: Latest garage band and automation

2015-10-02 Thread Jeffrey Shockley
Hi,
If you have ever had them installed before, and you have used the same Apple ID
with a Mac before, and have updated them before from the App Store, then, you
do not have to buy these newest versions.
However, if you haven’t, then you’ll have to buy them, or I’m not sure if this
would work anymore, but you could install the iLife 11 apps and upgrade them
from the App Store by just going to Updates and installing them, I think. I
don’t quite remember, but I think that’s how I did it, it’s been a long time
since I did it.

for both of the podcasts I'm doing, the material is brought in
from other sources such as recording in the field from an iOS
device, or other MP3 files on my computer.
I remember several years ago, like five years ago, there was a
handy little feature in garage band or you could identify a track
as either the front or the back, or something like that, where
the compression would kick in and automatically fade the music
behind the vocal track of a podcast.
From some basic research I've done on google, apparently some
of the podcasting features have been removed from GarageBand. Is
this the case?
Or, if I remember right the process of getting the music to
automatically be compressed with the vocals was called automation
or something like that, is it possible to still do this in
GarageBand? If not, is there a convenient way to do this?

If it can be done, could someone let me know how they are doing it?
Right now I manually fading the intro in with Amadeus, and then
fading it out into the vocal tracks. And doing the opposite with
the Outtro file. I don't have any instrumental tracks
accompanying the vocals, though the podcasts could definitely use
it if I could find an easy and accurate way to do this.

Sorry for the confusion.

Um… You might want to rethink that.
Actually, it’s $4.99. However if you already had an earlier version of iLife
installed such as iLife 11, then you upgraded for free to the new versions of
those apps including Garage Band. The same goes for the iWork suite.
  Hope this helps,

I'm doing some podcast work for myself and a client of mine, and
for both of the podcasts I'm doing, the material is brought in from other
sources such as recording in the field from an iOS device, or other MP3 files
on my computer.
I remember several years ago, like five years ago, there was a
handy little feature in garage band or you could identify a track as either the
front or the back, or something like that, where the compression would kick in
and automatically fade the music behind the vocal track of a podcast.
From some basic research I've done on google, apparently some of
the podcasting features have been removed from GarageBand. Is this the case?
Or, if I remember right the process of getting the music to
automatically be compressed with the vocals was called automation or something
like that, is it possible to still do this in GarageBand? If not, is there a
convenient way to do this?
If it can be done, could someone let me know how they are doing it?
Right now I manually fading the intro in with Amadeus, and then
fading it out into the vocal tracks. And doing the opposite with the Outtro
file. I don't have any instrumental tracks accompanying the vocals, though the
podcasts could definitely use it if I could find an easy and accurate way to
do this.

Any Accessible podcasts available for the new Garage band? What are loops please?

2015-09-08 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hi.

Are there any accessible podcasts available for Garage band please as the new
Garage band does not work like the previous one.

I can't rewind or forward a track by small intervals as it's all changed. If
someone could point me to any podcasts that they have done for the new Garage
band then that would be excellent. I use to be able to navigate the Item
chooser also but it's not working like it use to. Any pointers helpful. Could
someone also explain what a loop is as I don't understand what it means.

Thanks.

Kawal.

Re: how to find instruments from Min Stage 3 in Garage Band

You will find them in your library, just like every other instrument. The newer
packs will just be added to existing categories, while older patches, like the
4 Garage Band jam packs, will be at the very bottom under the “legacy” section.

Hi Jonnyboy. It souhnds so nice and interesting, what you said.
I really would like to know how.
Could you please record a podcast for us, or manage some Skype
conference with who's interested to learn a bit?

You may teach us the basics of editing in GB.

Thanks.
Gabriel.

PS: sorry, what version of GB are you using?

Hi Johny boy,

I think more than a few folks here are interested to know how to edit using
garage band. It would be awesome if you could write down the tips and tricks
you mentioned, or indeed you wouldn’t mind creating a podcast on it. That would
be interesting and very helpful. Hope you will consider it.

Hi Juan.
Amadeus Pro allows you to edit almost any AudioFileFormat in a quite
accessible way.
Garageband, on the other hand, as far as I know doesn't allow to edit so
easily and I've strong dubts about its accessibility, unfortunately.

Re: Bring back the old Garage Band

2015-03-22 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
Realstrat is really good for electric stuff both clean an overdriven, but
I'm not sure of its accessibility, or if it works on the Mac. I used to use
it in Sonar back in the days, and it was incredible!

I just installed the pianoteq 5 demo on my mac. This ranks far above
Truepianos. The sound is fairly realistic and approaches that of an
acoustic piano. I’m considering buying it depending on the cost and the
potential hastle of getting it installed and configured. True pianos
sounds like a toy in comparison.

Re: Bring back the old Garage Band

2015-03-21 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
I'm very very glad you liked it. You will need sighted help getting it
licensed with your key, but once that is done, you're good to go.

Let me make a major suggestion though, just to save you some money in the
longrun. Don't get the full Pianoteq package. First of all, a lot of what
it can do can be done with a good recording DAW. Basically, what it gives
you are things like placing virtual microphones in the spectrom to give
different color tonements, and different frequency responses. You can set
virtual spacement, meaning, how much space on the spectrom between your
left/right channels, and where on the keyboard... which note... you want the
crossover to start, and how deep of a crossover slope you want. Things like
this. A lot of this could be done as well though with a good phasing plugin
within your DAW. ProTools has a few of these which are very good, and I'm
sure that Garageband, even in the older versions does as well. If nothing
else, though a bit pricy, check out some of the stuff both from isotope, or
from Waves. Both of which have plugs that could be used in GB that are
just! fan! Tastic! Anyway, getting back to Pianoteq... I'd personally just
go with Pianoteq Stage. You're only going to get basically one bank of
pianos with this version, if I understand correctly, but here's the other
thing... Unless you have someone prepare you already made presets, the main
plugin window isn't going to be the most accessible. It kind of is, but I
just don't know to what extent. If all you're wanting though is a decent
sounding grand piano, then Pianoteq Stage is probably most likely all you'll
need. It's not Synthogy Ivory by any means, nor is it my Roland RP401R
Rosewood digital piano by any means, but it definitely does get the job
done.

Bring back the old Garage Band

2015-03-19 Thread Chris Moore
Hello,
As many of us have discovered, accessibility is a real issue with the current
version of GB.

Well, I discovered an older version (6.0.5) on my mac mini and decided to give
it a try. My goal was to hook up my midi keyboard and play it through GB using
an audio unit software instrument. I discovered that this task was doable with
voiceOver without any sighted assistance.

So far I have tried out two audio units. The first is “piano1” which is free.
The second is the demo version of True Pianos. While the stand alone version
of True Pianos is not accessible, I discovered by accident that an audio unit
had been installed along with the stand alone version.

So, for those interested in playing your keyboard on the Mac, it is certainly
doable. In my case the key was to use a more accessible version of garage band.

Re: Bring back the old Garage Band

2015-03-19 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
Chris, on another note, which of those two piano synths do you find to be
more realistic? I'm a professional musician, and would love to hear your
thoughts.

Currently, I use the built in internal concert grand piano sample from my
digital piano which is a Roland RP401R Rosewood system, and I'm telling you
one thing! The sample is, just! breath taking! Probably the most gorgeous
piano sample I ever have heard! Sometimes, If I need something to be in
midi format, I use Pianoteq 4 Stage. I'm very very highly considerring,
provided I can get someone to help me transfer the asset to my ILok, a copy
of Synthogy's Ivory.
