Hi Meredith,

We used Matterport type software to document the exhibition We Are Nature: 
Living in the Anthropocene at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. The 
software works well if your goal is simply to document an exhibition for 
archival purposes. If you want to make it useful for educators you will want to 
add hot spots with text, audio, video and 2D/3D images attached. 

Working with GuidiGo, our partner on the Carnegie project, we produced a lot of 
audio and some video content to help visitors understand what the exhibition 
was about.  

It’s more challenging if you want to provide an engaging visitor experience, 
beyond simply documenting the exhibition. For one thing, you don’t really feel 
like you’re in the space unless you’re using a VR headset. You can see the 
difference by comparing the  Oculus Go headset

<http://blog.guidigo.com/CMNH/> version of our We Are Nature project. The more 
immersive experience is more enjoyable than simply pointing and clicking on a 
flat screen.

The other thing is that these are such solitary experiences, another reason why 
they don’t convey a sense of “being there.” Adding video of a curator or 
educator or artist actually speaking directly to visitors could help, giving 
them a feeling that they were not alone in the space.

Kiosks are CMS agnostic, so as far as I know there isn’t a kiosk that’s 
designed to use WordPress.

[MCN-L] Is anyone familiar with History IT?

Hello MCNers,

I posted this back in December but didn’t get any traction. However I’m still 
interested since one of our clients is considering using the History IT 
platform. 

We’re trying to gain a better understanding of how flexible their templates are 
- how easy it is to customize the navigation as well as the front end design. 

We’re looking into how we can use their platform to present an archive of video 
oral histories, transcriptions and other documents, and create a contemporary 
and user friendly experience for an audience of young women activists. Their 
set up  is very useful but seems to cater more to academics.

If you’ve had any experience with History IT we’d love to hear about it. Feel 
free to respond off list.

[MCN-L] Experience with History IT

Hello MCNers,

One of our clients is considering using the History IT platform and is 
interested in hearing about others’ experience with it. 

We’re trying to gain a better understanding of how flexible their templates are 
- how easy it is to customize the navigation as well as the front end design. 

We’re looking into how we can use their platform to present an archive of video 
oral histories, transcriptions and other documents, and create a contemporary 
and user friendly experience for an audience of young women activists. Their 
set up  is very useful but seems to cater more to academics.

Thanks to everyone for the information on funders who support digital media in 
some form. These grants cover a broad range of “digital,” from media 
production(video, interactive, web, mobile, AR,VR), to TV production, to 
digital staff and digitizing collections. 

These are the funding sources I have so far, in no particular order:

1. NEH
2. IMLS
3. The Knight Foundation
4. Bloomberg Philanthropies
5. Samuel Kress Foundation
6. MacArthur Foundation
7. NEA
8. Mellon Foundation

in Canada:
9. Documentary Heritage Communities Program
10. Canada Council for the Arts

Google Arts was also suggested. I’m not sure how to evaluate that since they 
create digital projects for museums, rather than contributing to museum 
initiated projects. What do you think? 

Should hardware manufacturers and software developers, who tend to cherry pick 
projects, also be included? 

I know funding patterns change over time but I’m interested in putting together 
a list of programs that are ongoing or have been sustained over a period of 
years. It would be great to add to this list, and then include how much money 
each source has granted, over the past 5 years or so.  It’s time consuming 
research! I need a smart intern!

[MCN-L] Funding for Digital Projects

Hello all,

I’ve been researching funding sources and the amounts that have been made 
available for digital media projects in museums in the US, or trying to anyway. 
There isn’t a single source of this information that I’ve been able to find. 
Aside from recent funders, the Knight Foundation and Bloomberg Philanthropies, 
and the IMLS, who are other regulars funders of digital projects? 

I’d be happy to share whatever I can gather.

Hi Chris,

We designed a website for the Museum of the City of New York with the same kind 
of banner design: http://activistnewyork.mcny.org
I know some of the photos were copyrighted. I can give you Sarah Spink’s 
contact info, the associate curator, to ask how they handled the 
cropping/copywrite issues.

We also designed a site for the IFPDA <http://www.ifpda.org/> with a massive 
slide show of artwork  that can’t be cropped. We set height and width limits so 
the strange sizes of the works don’t break the design, and had to keep all the 
title/artist/date information in one place as a result. We’re redesigning the 
entire website right now but have kept this slide show format because it 
showcases the art works so well, and that’s what was essential to do.

[MCN-L] Panel on VR

Hi Listers,

I know there’s a lot of interest in Virtual Reality these days. There are so 
many kinds of reality - virtual reality experienced with visual and audio 
headsets, interactive virtual reality experienced with visual and audio 
headsets and hand controls, and simulated games, for example.

I’d like to chair a session on how museums have started to explore and 
experiment with these technologies and what the issues are.  Casting a wide net 
right now.

If your museum is investigating or using VR, Sim games, perhaps even AR, and 
you’re interested in the panel idea, please let me know.

Hi Nancy,

Thanks very much for that link! I was sorry I had to miss the bake-off at 
MW2014. I'm finding that you're right about how many mobile developers are 
wrapping mobile websites. We have to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of 
native vs web apps. I think for a walking tour the advantage of a native app is 
GPS awareness, but in NYC wi-fi and 4G are just about ubiquitous, and web apps 
are easier to produce. We're looking into TAP and TourML too.

 I also got the chance to try some outdoor walking tours in the STQRY app 
 while in Seattle for AAM. It's not a web app (and nor are all the ones from 
 the MW Mobile Bake-off), but in my experience most app developers are 
 wrapping a mobile website anyway so it shouldn't be hard to get a web version 
 if that's what you want.
 
 Is there WIFI throughout the route of the tour? If not, a native app might be 
 preferable anyway.

Hi Brian,

When we caption videos for in gallery display  the font size that seems to work 
best for us is 20pt. We always try to find a font that's similar to whatever 
fonts are being used in the gallery graphics, as long as it's san serif, since 
we've found those fonts easier to read as captions. 

We typically make the lettering white, and lay the captions down on a 
transparent 60% black background. This helps legibility while not imposing an 
ugly, heavy black band along the bottom of the screen.

We never us open captions for aesthetic reasons. 

When captions in two languages are involved it can be tricky. You may need to 
edit two different videos to accommodate the different speaking times. For 
example it takes longer to say something in Spanish than in English, so 
sometimes a scene will need to stay up longer to allow for that extra time. 

To play a different language, either visitors can push a button prominently 
marked For Spanish language, press here or something like that, or the 
different language versions alternate playing and a sign indicates that. The 
second approach works for short videos, the first one is better for longer 
programs.

In terms of speaker positions - that depends on the viewing environment. If 
visitors are standing and watching a video on a screen in an open environment 
focused sound cones mounted above the area where people stand are the best way 
to go. If you've got an alcove viewing area that's at least partially blocked 
off, speakers mounted on both sides of the screen, facing viewers are typically 
used.

 A lawsuit filed by William Faulkner's heirs over a quote in the Woody Allen 
 film Midnight in Paris has been scheduled for trial April 7, 2014, in U.S. 
 District Court in Oxford.
 The Faulkner estate sued Sony Pictures Classics Inc. in October 2011, saying 
 the company infringed on copyright when actor Owen Wilson slightly misquoted 
 a line from Faulkner's Requiem for a Nun.
 In the film, the Wilson character says: The past is not dead. Actually, it's 
 not even past. You know who said that? Faulkner. And he was right.

 Absolutely, thank you Glen. I'm wondering at the moment about high-res 
 images intended for delivery through an IIPImage server. If we store large 
 volumes of these we'll definitely want plenty of space at low cost, but they 
 need to be in, effectively, local storage, so that the server can access 
 them as part of the file system and then stream them out as tiles to users 
 in real time. I guess for this scenario block storage is actually what we 
 need? 
 
 
 I'll defer to Nate in the other comments as he has had specific experience 
 with IIPImage. The only other thing I would add is that there are various 
 storage appliances that you can get that gives a hybrid approach where it 
 looks like local disk to your apps internally and has a local cache but 
 stores all the main data on S3. Check out the AWS Marketplace and it might 
 also be good to get in touch with a local Amazon integrator. 
 
 It might be good to send a followup post to the list once you make a decision 
 so others can benefit form your research!

 We've worked with Expression Engine on a number of projects most notably:

 It's a great CMS, really easy to use on the admin side and much easier to 
 work with in tandem with a sophisticated JS heavy front-end. EE injects 
 dynamic data into your markup really cleanly so you get much less extra 
 markup out of the gate compared to Drupal or some other CMSs.
 
 That said Drupal is still on our CMS of choice, since it's totally open 
 source and their is a much greater range and depth to the available modules. 
 We have also been working with Symfony, which is a framework that will be the 
 basis for Drupal 8.
 
 If you have any specific questions or need any contacts for EE devs (we know 
 a great dev shop that specializes in complex EE builds that we've teamed with 
 from time to time) hit me up off-list

 Meant to jump on the last post. We do a ton of work with Drupal work. Drupal 
 and Expression Engine are both really fantastic CMS solutions; we usually 
 lean towards Drupal 7, since its open source, has a large dev community, etc. 
 
 I would definitely try and host this on a MediaTemple (Dreamhost we've been 
 really unhappy with) or a similar hosting platform. Cloud hosting via Amazon 
 S3 is great, but does involve some real heavy lifting on the server side to 
 install and maintain the codebase. 
 
 You might also consider hosting with Acquia:
 http://www.acquia.com
 
 This is a great cloud hosted solution that also provides robust support, will 
 keep your modules and security patches up to date, etc. It's not super cheap 
 but it probably the best long-term hosting solution for Drupal. 
 
 Feel free to hit me up for more info. We've hosted Drupal on a range of 
 hosts and definitely have our favorites. As a general rule don't cheap out on 
 hosting, since migrating a Drupal site is none too easy once its up and 
 running.

 Robin - it's not clear to me what kind of servers you're looking for.
 
 That said, I wanted to make sure people knew about Pantheon for Drupal
 hosting. They provide you with great setups for dev, staging, and
 production. They also make migration code VERY easy. Their servers are
 running on Rackspace so their service is more of a managed dashboard for
 solid architecture. Regardless, they are just as reliable as Acquia.

[MCN-L] Question about Elo Touch Screen resolution size

Hi all,

We're designing an interactive for the Elo Touch Screen model: 2639L 26-inch 
Open-Frame Touchmonitor

The specs say the optimum resolution size is 1366 x 768 at 60 Hz. But it also 
lists several other sizes that is supports. 

Since 768px isn't all that big, I'm trying to find out if any of you have 
designed for higher res on this screen and still had your project look great.

[MCN-L] Kiosk Pro and other kiosk tablet apps: mcn-l Digest, Vol 77, Issue 9

Hi Heather,

We recommended using Kiosk Pro for iPads in a museum gallery, but the museum 
was concerned that kids would manage the two-finger swipe that's required to 
get to the admin page. We  ended up using wKiosk, 
http://www.adnx.com/software/wkiosk4mac.html, which satisfied their security 
concerns. Both work well with wifi enabled galleries so the app can be hosted 
on a server locally or in the cloud I believe. 

Bruce Wyman at Second Story also has a hack to put the iPad in kiosk mode w/out 
any additional software, if you want to contact him. He shared it at MCN2011.

 As you know, the MCN New Year begins immediately following the annual 
 conference. There is no rest for the weary! We are already planning great 
 things for the 2011 annual conference in Atlanta, and you can contribute your 
 ideas at http://www.mcn.edu/ . Between now and then, keep an eye on that 
 website as the Board and a skilled squad of volunteers works to improve MCN's 
 online offerings and resources for you, our community.
 
 A brief update on MCN Leadership:
 
 The all-volunteer MCN Board relies heavily on contributions from its 
 Directors, who come directly from our community, and give their time and 
 expertise to support the organization and - by extension - all of you. I am 
 continually honored and humbled to work with this group, they are outstanding 
 professionals and just plain terrific folks.
 
 Holly Witchey has been a valued MCN Director for the past several years, 
 especially in her efforts to make the annual conference truly excellent. Due 
 to changes in her career (and how busy it's making her), she has decided to 
 step down from the Board, effective immediately. While we will most certainly 
 miss her, we know that she will continue to be a trusted colleague, a key 
 contributing member of our community, and a strong voice of advocacy for 
 cultural institutions.  Thank you Holly, from all of us, for your efforts, 
 grace, and positive energy.
 
 Now, a bit of good news: at the MCN Board of Directors meeting earlier this 
 week, the Directors nominated and voted in (unanimously) a replacement 
 Director. We are very lucky to be able to add Victoria Portway to our Board. 
 As Chair of the Web  New Media Division at the Smithsonian National Air and 
 Space Museum, Vicki manages the Museum's web presence and new media 
 initiatives, including development of computer-based experiences on the 
 Museum floor. She has been with the Smithsonian for 17 years, from the 
 building of their first website in 1994. Please join me and the entire Board 
 in welcoming Vicki to the MCN leadership team.

[MCN-L] What do you know about Freebase/Refine?

Hi all,

I posted this the other day and since I heard there was some trouble with the 
list serve and I didn't get any response I thought it was worth asking again:

Does anyone have any experience with Freebase from Google? 

In their own words, 
Freebase is an open, Creative Commons licensed repository of structured data 
of more than 12 million entities. An entity is a single person, place, or 
thing. Freebase connects entities together as a graph. Each one has a unique 
Id, which can help distinguish multiple entities which have similar names, such 
as Henry Ford the industrialist vs Henry Ford the footballer.
Most of our topics are associated with one or more types (such as people, 
places, books, films, etc) and may have additional propertieslike date of 
birth for a person or latitude and longitude for a location. These types and 
properties and related concepts are calledSchema.
Anyone can contribute data to Freebase, and you can also build your own schema 
in a Base if Freebase does not yet have schema for a subject you're interested 
in.
Ways to use Freebase:
Use Freebase's Ids to uniquely identify entities anywhere on the web
Query Freebase's data using MQL
Build applications using our API or Acre, our hosted development platform
Freebase is also a community of thousands of data-lovers, working together to 
improve Freebase's data.

Do any of you have any experience with Freebase now called Refine2.0 from

[MCN-L] iPhone app discussion

Hi all,

There's another option that hasn't been mentioned yet, a DIY version  
called appmakr, from  http://www.appmakr.com/.

I haven't used it so I can't speak from personal experience - perhaps  
someone else on the List can , but people like Guy Kawaski and Seth  
Godin,  well respected social media bloggers and authors,  have used  
it to make apps that are for sale in the iPhone app store, so that  
gives it some credibility.

It's worth checking out while you're doing your research.

 Howdy everyone:

 I'm in the midst of reprocessing all (!!) of our image assets  
 from .NEF
 (a RAW format) and I'm wondering if I should take another look at
 JPEG2000 now.

 When I first started imaging the collection, JPEG2000 was in its  
 infancy
 and not widely adopted. As a result, I have my master files in NEF and
 TIF, my high-quality derivatives in TIF, and my accessible and web- 
 ready
 images in JPG.

 Part of this reprocessing will including making new copies of the
 high-quality derivatives as well as the accessible JPGs. So I'm
 wondering if I should replace the HQ derivative TIFs with JPEG2000 at
 this time.

 Anyone have any opinions, experiences or suggestions before I commit  
 to
 this?

Hi Lauren,

Since you want to post more than one podcast you need a solution that  
will serve up as many videos as you plan to offer. I'd recommend using  
free services like Vimeo or YouTube to host your videos. Many museums  
have set up channels on these websites. The advantages are 1) you're  
not paying for storing and serving the videos from your website and 2)  
your videos will be accessible to millions of people, rather than just  
those that go to your website. Once you upload them to Vimeo or  
YouTube, and tag them with keywords, any time people are on those  
sites and searching those keywords, your videos will appear. People  
who are interested in your subject will find you and you can actively  
begin to develop a new community of museum fans.

There have been many posts about this on the mcn mailing list. Also,  
this link will take you to some great examples of museums who've put  
podcasts on YouTube and successfully developed these new communities.

 Hi,
 I am new to the Museum Computer Network and I am looking for any  
 advice regarding podcasting. I work for a small natural history  
 museum with a very limited budget and we are looking to make  
 podcasts of past museum lectures available to the public on our  
 website. I have been told by senior staff that we do not have enough  
 space on our website, I wonder if anyone knows how much space a 60  
 minute podcast would take up. Also, what kind of technology would be  
 required to post a podcast on our website?

 The museum has a myspace profile, and part of the reason we  
 established it was the possibility that the podcast could be  
 downloaded from there. Is that really a viable option? We do have a  
 completely edited podcast ready to go and hope to have it up and  
 running by the summer. I would appreciate any suggestions or advice,  
 it would be very helpful to hear about others' experiences with  
 podcasting in museums.

[MCN-L] desktop application - solutions!

Thanks very much to Ari and the others who responded offline. It seems  
that there are two programs that will capture the audio data so it can  
be sent to the local web server: Flex and Max will both do this. We're  
going with a Max solution because I feel more confident that it will  
work. I hope this is helpful to others too.

 Following discussions with MDA and other sector bodies, the UK  
 Intellectual Property Office has launched a Copyright Exceptions  
 Consultation which could significantly simplify the management of  
 collections for museums.

 Launched on the 8th January at the British Library, the Consultation  
 builds on the 2006 Gowers Review of Intellectual Property which  
 proposed a number of modifications to existing rules to improve  
 access to and use of copyright material.

 MDA has lobbied for two specific exceptions to copyright law, both  
 of which are included in the Consultation document. These are:

 The ability for museums to make copies of works in their collections  
 for the purposes of preservation
 Exemptions concerning the copying of parody-style works

 Naomi Korn, MDA IP Officer commented, 'MDA welcomes the inclusion of  
 these potential exemptions in the Copyright Exemption Consultation  
 document. Being able to copy works for preservation purposes would  
 help the sector conserve their collections in perpetuity for the  
 benefit of the nation. The exemption for parody-style works would  
 mean that curators could handle these sometime complex works in  
 confidence.

 MDA is working closely with the UK Intellectual Property Office and  
 others to ensure that museums can make the most of their collections  
 for their users while minimising the potential for infringing  
 copyright.'

 The Copyright Exemptions Consultation runs to April 2008, and a copy

Sure, here's what we're trying to do for a state park visitor center:
build an application to reside on a laptop computer that will allow  
park visitors to
-take a picture of themselves,
-record an audio statement or write a statement about their visit to  
the park
and save these files to in such a way that they can be uploaded to a  
database as one record.
The part that has us stumped is finding one desktop program that will  
capture the sound. The rest is easy. Flash will do this but we'd have  
to buy a media player license (out of budget) and AIR doesn't seem to  
have an audio recording component.
Any advice greatly appreciated. Thank you,

[MCN-L] Looking for desktop application

Hello list,

I'd like to know if any of you have found a stand alone desktop/laptop  
application that can control a camera/capture an image; control a  
microphone, record and save audio; and save a text document. It also  
needs to be able to save each file with the same ID tag for future  
upload to a database as one record.

 From what I can tell the media player is the missing link for  
building this in flash or AIR. If you know of another program that can  
handle this, or a pre-existing application I would be very grateful  
for any info.

Dear Lauren,

One question, are you talking about a 60 min video podcast or audio  
podcast?

As a rough guide, audio podcasts are about 1Mb per minute, but if  
it's speech only, you can fit about 2 minutes into 1Mb, which would  
make a 60 min talk about 30Mbs. This is not very much space and  
should pretty easily fit on your web server. Depending on the speed  
of your listener's connections, there should be a smooth download or  
streaming of the material.

A one hour video podcast is a whole other kettle of fish. I'd  
recommend editing just the highlights into short separate programs to  
present as individual podcasts in that case.

There' s a lot of information out there about how to do this. This
