Hi guys!

You don't listen do you. Just remember these simple rules-- Sharp
minidisc walkmen esp the 702 will go pants with the UTOC error
after a few months, and all Sharp equipment, possibly even all non-
Sony equipment has a faulty ATRAC algorithm that turns nice music
into electronic junk. In addition all non-Sony units lack a feature to
manually set the recording position after the already used part :-)

Stick with Sony and you'll be okay I say (unless it's the 510 but hey
no-ones perfect, not even Sony). Or the 920 with HiSpace someone
says as well I think, or was that the 930.

True, but, apperently, these units that apair on E-Bay eo, are NOT refurbished

I just wanted to post a warning here about Refurbished Sharp 702s that
appear all over Ebay and other auction sites. These "things"
 have a 30 Day

like the gentleman who has just experience problems with his refurb.

What do you mean not factory refurbished ? Who else has the knowledge to
"refurbish" Sharp 702s in the US ?

I try to keep an eye on it since I'm a Power Seller there. I
 don't know how
these units made it back out into the public, who is at fault. If anyone
knows any specifics on these units, let me know. This is about
 the 5th time

Make it the 6th time. My roomy got one of those units from ebay, and on the

MD: 140GB CD ready...whow!

2000-03-02 Thread dirk . vael

Maximum PC reports that Constellation 3D (C3D) has developed an optical drive
technology call Fluorescent Multi-layer Disc and Card (FMD/C) that can read and
write more than 140 GB to a single transparent CD-ROM sized disc. FMD/C uses a
laser to activate the fluorescent material contained in the grooves of the
transparent disc and interprets the light emitted from the material as data.
FMD/C achieves its high capacity from the multiple data layers and is capable of
containing up to five times the number layers in standard DVD-ROMs. FMD/C drives
are expected to support traditional CD-ROM and DVD-ROM media and may be
available by end of 2001.

Re: MD: Micro keyboard for titling

2000-03-02 Thread Timothy P. Stockman

There is your answer ... MD connected to a Palm Pilot

I have a Palm III and various MD equipment. At this point, the *only*
common connection is IR, specifically, the Palm with send/receive IR and my
JE520 and MDS-PC2 will receive it. The Palm will send/receive RS232 and,
with the addition of the CAV-50C RS232/Slink interface, so will the MDS-PC2.
But I think it would be better to concentrate on the portables, rather than
these home-type decks.

I think the best solution for *existing* portable MD would be a cable that
connected the RS232 hotsync on the Palm to the 4-pin remote connector on the
MD. Two of the 4 pins are control, which is normally implemented by a
resistor ladder and pushbuttons, but I've seen PC interfaces that use CMOS
analog switches. The other two are data from the MD to the LCD (or the
label printer). Looks like an opportunity to use a PIC single-chip
microprocessor to make the connection.

I'm sure that it would be possible to write a Palm program similar to the PC
program Sony supplies with the MDs-PC2. Might make me think of replacing my
MZ-EP11 player with a portable recorder!

I guess not. I noticed his smiley, but I just had to get that off my
chest anyway. I feel much better now. ;-)

BTW... I've looked at other portables as possible replacements for my R50
for this very reason. But all of them, even the new Sony's, seem to have
various usability drawbacks when compared to it. For example, the jog
dial is WONDERFUL. I also love how easy the R50 makes it to mark and
unmark tracks (push a button and you're done).

If Sony made a version of the R50 that had the following modifications, I
would buy one YESTERDAY and tell my friends that they should buy one too:

-- the R90's battery life (actually, the R50's form factor should
  allow a longer life)
-- a backlit display
-- an "automatic" end search when recording
-- the ability to start playing from the beginning without having
  to use the jog dial
-- without cutting the performance (such as the R90's less precise
track marking or slower startup times)
-- slightly lighter (It doesn't have to be smaller, although slimmer
might be possible if they're very, very careful about it.)

MD: Excessive line noise using TOSLINK w/ Xitel

2000-03-02 Thread UberWrensch

Hello all,

I'm attempting to record mp3's from my computer to my minidisc via TOSLINK,
but the sound coming through has excessive noise. I do not experience this
excessive line noise during analog recording, nor when simply listening
through my desktop speakers.

Computer specs:
Win 98
Celeron 500MHz
256MB RAM

Xitel Platinum

Adaptec 2940 PCI
Netgear 100/10 NIC PCI
Creative TNT2 AGP

Minidisc specs:
Sharp 722

I've tried a number of things, but have yet to come up with a solution:

1. lowered the digital out volume and wave out volume within sound control
panel, but no effect on noise level.

2. recorded mp3 at various bitrates, 128, 160, 192, but no effect

3. swapped sound card with *another* new Xitel Platinum, but same line noise

4. swapped stock TOSLINK cable with a Sony (POC-15AB) unit, but no effect

5. moved the sound card from one PCI slot to another, but no effect

6. swapped Sharp 722 unit with new one, but no change

Anyone have solutions I can try? Similar experiences?

Thanks for listening,

Uber

You will need a USB audio device with a TOSLink output. The DATPort and
SonicPort from Opcode have been reported to work very well. The DATPort
has toslink output only, the SonicPort adds analog output. I also believe
Roland has a USB device with optical output. I think minidisco is selling
these right now for around $220.

At least the R50's jog dial is good for changing tracks. On the R3, only the
FF and REW buttons do that: its jog dial is used only for titling and rese-

MD: Aiwa AM-F70 to the rescue

2000-03-02 Thread David W. Tamkin

So I did some editing in my JE520 and ejected the disc, letting the edited
TOC get written. It was one of my oldest, most used discs.

I put the disc into the W1 and got "C14 error." Same thing in the other slot
of the W1, same thing back in the 520, "disc error" in the 500.

Damn. I had a printed listing of all the tracks on the disc except the
couple I had just added, and I still remembered those, and they were all from
my CD collection -- nothing live, nothing off the radio -- so I could have
rerecorded it all from scratch if necessary, but it would have taken a lot of
time and effort.

But my AM-F70 could still read and play the disc! I dirtied the TOC in the
F70 and let it write.

The F70 recovered it all. The disc even survived further writes in the 520.

incident due to my father's wonderful jumping up and down in front of the

again...and again

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Are you only feeding one channel (ie, left channel or right channel only?)
If som you need a cable to split the mono signal to feed both channels to
get the best signal. You can try decreasing the desk volume and increasing
record volume on the R55. In my experience this only happens when you try to
put too loud a signal into the unit because the record levels are too low.

Subject: MD: Distortion in Mono Mode

I have a Sony MZ-R55 that works great when I record in Stereo, but if I
put
it in Mono mode to record, the recordings come out distorted, and the
distortion increases as the songs I am recording build in volume. I am
recording from a soundboard using my "line in" input.
 Any suggestions??

 Thanks,

Hi I am having trouble with my sony mz-r55. When i put it on sync record and

the ability to start playing from the beginning without
having to use the jog dial

Yes! I *hate* this. Add to it the fact that when I'm on the last song, I
can't hit "forward" to go to track #1 -- I have to jog/skip all the way
to the beginning or open the door and close it again.

I'll also add:

- Get a better remote! The Sony "stick" is the stupidest remote I've ever
used. In order to skip tracks, you have to turn the little knob at the
end, but to do that with one hand is difficult without hitting the stop
button embedded in the knob. The Sharp, Aiwa and Kenwood remotes I've
seen are all much, much better.

- Implement an insert/eject mechanism like the Sharp 700-series. The
floppy-style is better in every way: less flimsy, less prone to breakage,
easier to eject/insert when in a pocket/bag.

Other than that, I love my MZR50.

I've tried other remotes (Aiwa AM-F7, Sharp 721, Sharp 702, Panasonic
SJ-MJ70, the newer Sony remote used in the R90), and the older Sony
"twist-stick" remote was by FAR the most annoying remote to use with one
hand.

I mean, it's not that it's unbearable, but it pales greatly in
comparison to the others when you factor in ease of use with one hand.

And I have small fingers.

I'd just like to ask

Am I the only person who doesn't give a toss about the End Search button??? I own a
MZ-R91 and it really doesn't bother me. I've made heaps of live recordings, copying
CD's, compilations and not once has it caused me to lose something.

That's my 5 shillings.

RE: MD: Perfect Portable

2000-03-02 Thread Richard Lang

For what it's worth I think the stick remote kicks ass too.

I have one on my MZ-E25 and I have to admit I do not see why people have
hassles with it - I use the thing one-handed all the time.

How do I manage this amazing feat? It's easy - I just grab the stick with
my hand and use my thumb and forefinger to work the AMS/play control or vol
controls or whatever. The stop button on the end is easy to find if you
need it, especially when people randomly wander up to you and start talking
(how big do headphones have to be before people realise you've got a walkman
on??) - other remotes have had a less obvious stop button and that is a real
pain in the ass.

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between this stick remote (the
first one sony came out with) and the newer more streamlined one?

I've also got a sony CD (E707?) player with an oval style back-lit remote
and by comparison it is the dumbest remote I've ever come across. It has a
jog lever at the bottom and it is almost impossible to adjust anything
without hitting the lever and skipping the track you're listening to - now
THAT'S irritating...

You're doing this over an analogue connection, and there are some pauses
longer than two seconds in this song?

Then it's entirely normal, and in the manual. You should be doing this over
a digital connection, or turning off synchro rec and doing the track marks
manually. (Or, you could just erase the unnecessary synchro rec track marks
afterwards.)

B! Sorry, but that answer is incorrect ;-)

Only the early 702 models had UTOC problems. Subsequent 702s (-MK models)
and non-702s have not had these problems.

In addition all non-Sony units lack a feature to manually set
the recording position after the already used part

"Feature?" Let's see... on my Sony unit, I have to remember to hit a
button before I start recording, or else I'll record over other stuff. On
my girlfriend's Sharp, when I press record it automatically goes to the
end of recorded material so I don't record over anything. "Sony feature?"
Right...

By the way, both Sony and Sharp units allow you to start recording
anywhere you want, so there is absolutely no reason the Sony units should
have this ridiculous button. The Sony home decks don't have it, no other
units from any other manufacturer has it, so why do the Sony portables?

Stick with Sony and you'll be okay I say

And you'll also be out about $200 more ;-)

RE: MD: SONY MZ-R55

2000-03-02 Thread Tony Antoniou

When using sync record, it not only detects the track marks when recording
digitally from a CD, but it also detects silences (or relatively quiet
passages) of a predetermined length. If that length is satisfied, then it
automatically thinks its another track. This happens regardless of digital
or analogue input.

So don't worry. It's cumbersome to have to re-combine everything, but it's
normal all the same.
