I'm not a Microsoft apologist by any means but people who say Mac is the answer to all the questions aren't really paying attention. Apple has for a long time been hiring engineers who are deeply steeped in the Wintel tradition, and the machines are getting quite un-Mac-like when compared to the early ones. It's sad. -- Jim

Have you actually seen this? I've never heard anybody say anything even REMOTELY like this before, where are you getting your information? I've heard of it being done, but the factory 5 cylinder stick-shift flywheel is thicker and heavier. I was able to locate the proper 617 stick-shift flywheel when I was doing my conversion in Austin, TX. No balancing issues? I heard that each flywheel is balanced to it's engine is this true? The shop manual has a large section on balancing a new flywheel to the old one, but I didn't go through that since I never had an original stick-shift flywheel for the 617 engine I used. In addition, when the machine shop was resurfacing the flywheel, the gouged the inside of the clutch pressure plate support ring and had to re-balance the flywheel statically. It's worked just fine for the last mearly 50,000 miles. You do need to insert a pilot bearing in the back end of the crankshaft and need to check the bolts that attach the flywheel to the crank (they're stretched when they're tightened and have a limited number of re-uses). The drive shaft length will have to be changed, too, and then the driveshaft will have to be rebalanced. Craig P.S. Hi Do try another descaling flush ,my 300se made a dramatic decrease in temp only after the third descaling flushing . Changing the cut-in temperature of the viscous fan coupling will effect a big change if all is well with the head gasket and other items. Also added a bottle of bar's leak to the coolant . I think this is the processing cost, and does not include the input costs and transportation. Revolutionary New Biodiesel Process By [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thursday, June 22, 2006 An Iowa State researcher's testing a new process that could cut the cost of producing biodiesel by more than 75-percent. Professor Victor Lin says normal processing costs about 30-cents a gallon to produce right now. In the lab, it cost them about 7-cents a gallon. And, he says he's in the process of field-testing his nanosphere catalyst at the West Central Co-op in Ralston. He says his new process could even help lower the cost of turning restaurant oils and animal fats into biodiesel as well. http://www.whoradio.com/pages/news/local/index.html?feed=121648article=528337 Loren At 09:46 PM 6/22/2006, you wrote: Cheaper and cleaner. http://www.upi.com/NewsTrack/view.php?StoryID=20060619-033717-7622r Harry Watkins Newton, MS 86 SDL Silver 85 300D Euro 86 SDL Gold 81 240D manual trans ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

[MBZ] 300D 2.5 Turbo Fuel Pump on Ebay or a problem with numbers
Ok here is the problem. My mechanic, MB certified, tells me that it is just a matter of time before my fuel pump goes. It surges, some days worse than others, load, temperature, etc. It has been doing this for eight years now, but admittedly it is getting worse. Anyway, a quote from the parts desk at the local dealer tells me the part I need is 602-070-45-01-88 for the remanufactured one (1418.00). The ebay one at 400.00 claims to fit 90 to 93 2.5 turbos with numbers of 602-070-45-13-01. The clinker is that the fuel pump that is on my engine has the numbers 602-070-65-01. My mechanic has mentioned to me that the electrical connections might be different and just to wait until it craps out. Which is probably what I will do. Has anyone run across this before? http://makeashorterlink.com/?S4DD3215D Bob Morrison 223 Buchanan Ave. Kalamazoo, MI 49001-5326 (269) 381-0639

If not, and the pump will hold up until winter, you might want to pull it and have it rebuilt to racing standards for about $300 less than the dealer part. There's a shop in Finland that will do all sorts of wonderful things to it, including replacing the pistons and cylinders, installing an external torque adjustment, etc. Rusty (see the parts link at the bottom of this message) can probably supply you with a rebuilt IP for less than $1000 if you're in a hurry. Another thing to consider is the possibility that there's nothing wrong with the IP. Lack of fuel supply to the IP can make the engine act up in all sorts of ways. There might be a clogged pickup screen in the tank, bad tank vent, etc. You might try running on an alternate fuel supply (a coke bottle with a hose in it will do in a pinch) and see if that makes it run better. [MBZ] W126 Frond suspension
The front suspension on my 85 300SD is in need of some attention. It has driven well ( by my standards any way) but has always had a faint clunk in it. Very metallic in sound and seems to telegraph around the left top side of the wheel well into the A pillar. Lately it has gotten more pronounced. I believe this is from a guide rod ( what in ahem .. Ford terms I would call a strut) The rubber boot on one of the 'ball joints' for it is totally gone and the other one is in a bad way (rubber boot). The bushings in the 'bearing brackets don't look to bad. However I would like to replace them. In the pdf-s the RR for the guide rod mount (inside the bearing bracket) however the RR of the bearing bracket bushings looks more interesting. If I am careful can I push in the bearing bracket bushings with out the tool? (long bolt, washers, piece of pipe ---) BTW the lower ball joints and lower control arm bushings were serviced by the precocious owner (looks like inner tie rod ends and steering idler bushing also) George Larribeau Dallas, Texas 1985 300SD 190K

Craig P.S. [MBZ] Portable Start Devices
Good Morning Benz Friends, An incident last night has caused me to consider the purchase of one of those portable battery units from which you can start a car with a dead or weak battery. I'd like any opinions, comments etc you might have regarding these devices. Is there a similar risk to auto electronics when using one of these portable start devices? Are these portable start devices available for 6V applications (1937 Buick)? Are these portable start devices available for 24V applications (1950 Army Firetruck)? Any recommendations by brand or model that you've had good experience with? I bet you could build one! A quick back-of-the-envelope calculation suggests a 0.9 hp string trimmer motor should be able to handle an alternator output of up to about 50 amps at 12V. You won't jump-start a car off that, but it'd charge the battery in pretty short order. Neat idea.

Re: [MBZ] Portable Start Devices
I looked at these a couple years ago when I needed portable power to run the block heater on my 240D. I came to the conclusion that they're all too small to be much use unless you're just fighting a weakened battery. Most were like [EMAIL PROTECTED] which isn't enough to start a diesel. I've never seen one in 6 or 24v. In my case for $60 I bought a 110ah marine battery and a $10 plastic battery box that I mounted my 400w inverter to. For awhile my 240D's alternator wasn't working so I'd carry the battery so I could start the car to get home. Worked sweet for the money. I've loaned it out to folks in my apartment complex a couple times when for whatever reason I didn't want to (or couldn't) go out to help them start their car, on a small gas engine it works fantastic, especially with real good jumper cables. -Curt Date: Fri, 23 Jun 2006 10:05:45 -0600 From: Jon Kanas [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [MBZ] Portable Start Devices To: mercedes@okiebenz.com Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Good Morning Benz Friends, An incident last night has caused me to consider the purchase of one of those portable battery units from which you can start a car with a dead or weak battery.
