Apple has for a long time been hiring engineers who are deeply

to have seen something bad happen. It didn't leak a detectable amount.

You do not want to use ATF for PS. The ATF of today is very different
then
the ATF of the 80's, and the new stuff will eat the seals and cause
leaks.

Stick with PS fluid.

How so? I think the typical SDL gets better mileage than the typical

Hi Craig,
All your suggestions sound great - but instead of modifying the flywheel
and

drveshaft wouldn't it be preferable to transfer *all* the components from
the donor 300D?

Sounds like a very workable transformation --
;-) I'll be looking for an 84 or 85 300D!

BTW, would later 300Ds work in a W123 240D? Just in case I happen to
find

a rust bucket 87/88/89? 300D - or where they getting too complex?

Most definitely. The body, afterall, was designed to handle all those
combinations.

I assume the bolt pattern for the bellhousing is the same between the
two engines?

Most likely. If not, the adapter plate that bolts onto the back of the
block and to which the bellhousing bolts can be transferred from one
engine to the other.

Flywheel from the 240 will go on the 5cyl.?

I've heard of it being done, but the factory 5 cylinder stick-shift
flywheel is thicker and heavier. I was able to locate the proper 617
stick-shift flywheel when I was doing my conversion in Austin, TX.

No balancing issues? I heard that each flywheel is balanced to it's
engine is this true?

The shop manual has a large section on balancing a new flywheel to the
old

one, but I didn't go through that since I never had an original
stick-shift flywheel for the 617 engine I used. In addition, when the
machine shop was resurfacing the flywheel, the gouged the inside of the
clutch pressure plate support ring and had to re-balance the flywheel
statically. It's worked just fine for the last mearly 50,000 miles.

You do need to insert a pilot bearing in the back end of the crankshaft
and need to check the bolts that attach the flywheel to the crank
(they're

stretched when they're tightened and have a limited number of re-uses).

The drive shaft length will have to be changed, too, and then the
driveshaft will have to be rebalanced.

On my '83 300D it ran out and puddled along the bottom of the gasket. Very
difficult to get just the right amount so that it doesn't run out. I
wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

The only placa any of mine have leaked is around the front and rear

I've used the official Mercedes runny gasket seal in the past, but I can't

an old bread truck? With torque peak around 1600, they should be
quite happy with a 4 pole generator.

If the Cummins were half as common to find for a reasonable price I would
LOVE to use one. Would be the best choice for my M37 as well.

You should have the special threaded reamer which is aligned by screwing

it for a reamer.

[MBZ] Benz Trucks

2006-06-23 Thread Ed Booher

Saw an interesting animal today. A large MB box truck, in very nice
condition too, I was surprised by the solid look of the truck (no
major dents, no rust, etc). Now we were driving, so I wasn't crawling
around underneath it, but still .

anyway, I digress. I'm sure on the cab I saw a 117 I haven't been
able to find any information on Google with that, getting a lot of 117
replies, etc. So I'm turning to you for a more formal designation I
can narrow the search with

Anyone know anything about these trucks?

The news was in the last day is that Lin is stating the production cost of
BioD goes from 31-32 cents a gallon to 7 cents. I think this is the
processing cost, and does not include the input costs and transportation.

Revolutionary New Biodiesel Process
By [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Thursday, June 22, 2006

An Iowa State researcher's testing a new process that could cut the cost of
producing biodiesel by more than 75-percent. Professor Victor Lin says
normal processing costs about 30-cents a gallon to produce right now. In
the lab, it cost them about 7-cents a gallon. And, he says he's in the
process of field-testing his nanosphere catalyst at the West Central
Co-op in Ralston. He says his new process could even help lower the cost of
turning restaurant oils and animal fats into biodiesel as well.

Here's an excerpt, verbatim, from a Mercedes Benz 124 diesel owner's
manual inclusive of 601, 602 and 603 engines:

Should standard gasoline have to be used for blending, never exceed
a proportion of 30%. Premium fuels must not be used. The lower flash
point of the supplementary fuels increases the danger of explosions.
Engine power may drop according to the proportion of supplementary
fuel. For this reason, keep percentage of fuel added to the minimum
necessitated by the ambient temperature. At ambient temperatures of
less than -25C the proportion of supplementary fuel must not exceed
50%.

The manual from which I gleaned this information is an English
version of Euro 124Ds #124 584 14 96 Order #6550 5614 02. Regardless
of the geographical difference, a 60X is a 60X and gasoline is
gasoline. Even if available octane ratings differ from country to
country. You won't be hurting anything by adding 1/70th of a tank of
gasoline to your diesel fuel.

They provide full results outside of China (which the people in China smart

[MBZ] 300D 2.5 Turbo Fuel Pump on Ebay or a problem with numbers

2006-06-23 Thread Bob Morrison
Ok here is the problem. My mechanic, MB certified, tells me that it is just
a matter of time before my fuel pump goes. It surges, some days worse than
others, load, temperature, etc. It has been doing this for eight years now,
but admittedly it is getting worse. Anyway, a quote from the parts desk at
the local dealer tells me the part I need is 602-070-45-01-88 for the
remanufactured one (1418.00). The ebay one at 400.00 claims to fit 90 to 93
2.5 turbos with numbers of 602-070-45-13-01. The clinker is that the fuel
pump that is on my engine has the numbers 602-070-65-01. My mechanic has
mentioned to me that the electrical connections might be different and just
to wait until it craps out. Which is probably what I will do. Has anyone
run across this before?

Bob, do you drive the car year round?
If not, and the pump will hold up until winter, you might want to pull
it and have it rebuilt to racing standards for about $300 less than
the dealer part. There's a shop in Finland that will do all sorts of
wonderful things to it, including replacing the pistons and cylinders,
installing an external torque adjustment, etc.

Rusty (see the parts link at the bottom of this message) can probably
supply you with a rebuilt IP for less than $1000 if you're in a hurry.

Another thing to consider is the possibility that there's nothing wrong
with the IP. Lack of fuel supply to the IP can make the engine act up
in all sorts of ways. There might be a clogged pickup screen in the
tank, bad tank vent, etc. You might try running on an alternate fuel
supply (a coke bottle with a hose in it will do in a pinch) and see
if that makes it run better.

[MBZ] W126 Frond suspension

2006-06-23 Thread George Larribeau
The front suspension on my 85 300SD is in need of some attention. It has driven
well ( by my standards any way) but has always had a faint clunk in it. Very
metallic in sound and seems to telegraph around the left top side of the wheel
well into the A pillar. Lately it has gotten more pronounced. I believe this is
from a guide rod ( what in ahem .. Ford terms I would call a strut) The rubber
boot on one of the 'ball joints' for it is totally gone and the other one is in
a bad way (rubber boot). The bushings in the 'bearing brackets don't look to
bad. However I would like to replace them. In the pdf-s the RR for the guide
rod mount (inside the bearing bracket) however the RR of the bearing bracket
bushings looks more interesting. If I am careful can I push in the bearing
bracket bushings with out the tool? (long bolt, washers, piece of pipe ---)

BTW the lower ball joints and lower control arm bushings were serviced by the
precocious owner (looks like inner tie rod ends and steering idler bushing also)

Re: [MBZ] Hanging out the shingle

2006-06-23 Thread Jim Cathey

Why don't you go to Becker radio repair school! I have a shelfful of
dubious carcasses.

I've got a couple myself! For now I thought I'd stick to what I
know and see what happens. (So far, that has been nothing.)

Also - do you repair the rectangular clocks in 110, 111 coupes and
sedans
and the 109 6.3 sedans from 1963-71? I think they are
mechanical/quartz.

If I can extrapolate from what I know about 115's (dangerous, I know),
those would be mechanical clocks. There are qualified people out there
who can repair those. I'm not one of them! I'm a capacitor, burned
trace, and solder kind of guy.

[MBZ] Portable Start Devices

2006-06-23 Thread Jon Kanas

Good Morning Benz Friends,

An incident last night has caused me to consider the purchase of one of
those portable battery units from which you can start a car with a dead
or weak battery. I'd like any opinions, comments etc you might have
regarding these devices. I know that there are concerns jumping newer
computer-laden vehicles regarding possible current overload when the
engine starts damaging some of the electronics.

Is there a similar risk to auto electronics when using one of these
   portable start devices?
Are these portable start devices available for 6V applications (1937
   Buick)?
Are these portable start devices available for 24V applications
   (1950 Army Firetruck)?
Any recommendations by brand or model that you've had good
   experience with?

Best Regards,

Bob Morrison wrote:

Your mechanic is there and has worked on the car so he's one up on me,
BUT.

The symptoms you describe are almost NEVER the injection pump. They
almost always relate to air intake, EGR, vacuum modulation of the
wastegate, pressure signals to the ALDA or the computer that controls
the emissions system and engine idle. If any of these is outside the
correct range, the engine WILL surge - even with a PERFECT injection pump.

suggests a 0.9 hp string trimmer motor should be able to handle an
alternator output of up to about 50 amps at 12V. You won't jump-start a
car off that, but it'd charge the battery in pretty short order. Neat idea.

Mercedes didn't bring that wheel into the US (although it was a
legitimate part). I've seen very few used. There were aftermarket wheels
that would fit.

If you find any, be sure they have the correct (20-25 mm) offset needed

Re: [MBZ] Portable Start Devices

2006-06-23 Thread Curt Raymond
I looked at these a couple years ago when I needed portable power to run the
block heater on my 240D. I came to the conclusion that they're all too small to
be much use unless you're just fighting a weakened battery. Most were like
[EMAIL PROTECTED] which isn't enough to start a diesel. I've never seen one in
6 or 24v.
In my case for $60 I bought a 110ah marine battery and a $10 plastic battery
box that I mounted my 400w inverter to. For awhile my 240D's alternator wasn't
working so I'd carry the battery so I could start the car to get home. Worked
sweet for the money. I've loaned it out to folks in my apartment complex a
couple times when for whatever reason I didn't want to (or couldn't) go out to
help them start their car, on a small gas engine it works fantastic, especially
with real good jumper cables.

Are these portable start devices available for 6V applications
(1937
Buick)?
Are these portable start devices available for 24V applications
(1950 Army Firetruck)?
Any recommendations by brand or model that you've had good
experience with?

I saw one time in a 4wd magazine where it was suggested that in the backcountry
you carry a chainsaw with no bar or chain but with an appropriate sized v belt
and pully so you could hook it to your truck's alternator in case of a dead

 regarding these devices.

I hate all devices with batteries. Batteries die.
I'd be far more interested in some lunchbox-sized
2-cycle motor with an adjustable-voltage alternator
on it, that'd store nearly forever. I don't think
such a thing exists, however.

its the way they mount, basically you just have to move the little metal
clip things off of the 123 one to make a 126 one work in a 123.

I suspect not. Our 123's use a stepped (switched resistance) blower
motor, whereas our 126 (SDL) uses a continuous (porcupined) blower
