Was browsing the rennlist.com wheel ads and ad# 9728 has wheels like you
are
looking for incl the 10.6 offset - they are refinished at $1100. The photo
shows 2 wheels but the ad does not state the total # for sale.

Thank you. I saw that ad and the price is OK. The problem is that they have
been polished and I have to have the factory-look anodized finish. Which
means

one of them would have to be re-restored at a cost of $220 (includes 2-way
shipping to L.A.). I can buy a factory new wheel for the same final cost.
But,
the problem with THAT is that the OE anodize most likely would not be the
same

as the California anodize. And on and on..

Some people are paying less for entire cars.

I just replaced that part on the SDL (603) last weekend. It was
plastic, with a foam tube over it. I also replaced the rubber grommet

it by clamping a piece of fuel line across the break. Rusty sent the
new parts. The seeping around the grommet should be stopped now.

[MBZ] 560sel quick tips 103 service ?

Excellent, any other items to check in a 103 engine/ 126 ?
I would like to go over most replacement items due to age related wear.

Ever so dependable; yesterday the 300se stalled twice in a row on the
overrun

before coming to a stop. Restarted after churning' the starter. I left
it till mornig and had a perfect start smooth idling . what was
wrong, still baffled!
As a preventative measure I have simply cleaned the throttle plate and the

The 560SEL is a great car. The timing chain and valve guide seals should
be
replaced, I usually do both at the same time. Also replace timing chain
guides when doing timing chain regardless of what they look like. The
second
timing chain will need to be replaced around 100-120k miles. I personally
think they wear quicker than OEM.

The hydraulic suspension sometimes gives problems. The most common is a
leaking line that runs from front of car to rear.

Other than that the car is a W126 gasser and has the same problems as
most.
Specifically you will need to check alternator brushes every 50k miles.
Around 170k you might want to replace water pump. Around 120k you will
want
to replace guide rod bushings/bearings, tie rod ends, idler arm, shocks,
and
lower ball joints. Also the sway bar links in rear need replaced about
every
100k when you start hearing clicking in rear.

Seeing as it does appear that my SD's motor has expired, and seeing as I
need a vehicle on a daily basis, I may end up buying another car quick.

I have a line on an 89? 560sel, cosmetically wonderful (of course) but
unfortunately it has been sitting for about two years and started only
infrequently during that time. The guy selling it (agent for the PO, a
wealthy local resort owner) admits the valve seals are bad and it smokes
when cold. Beyond that it's the usual Sgt. Shultz routine.

In all my years on the lists I've been a diesel guy so I pretty much

ignored

V8 talk. I DO know to check if the chains have been done, and the state
of
the exhaust and cats, and other obvious stuff for a parked car like the
waterpump, belts, alternator, stuff that may have accelerated decrepitude
from sitting.

Another other points?

It's a kicking good deal BUT we all know the way that goes

ends; PERFECT BRAND NEW LOOKING INSIDE; i have always used theCHEAPEST

[MBZ] OIL QUALITY TEST

2006-10-09 Thread Stephen D Murrell
HI; 71 Ford LTD ; Mobil oil, NOT M1 no oil using or burning, about 120K
mi

81 Ford LTD ; about 100K mi.

88 FORD Ranger ; 219K mi. very little or no oil usage ford oil then
CHEAPEST ?-MART oil

79 M.B. 240D ; Mystic 15-50 oil, cheap little or no oil usage still
breaking in???

85 M.B. 300D Calif. model, with supposedly rebuilt engine(bought on
E-Bay) 280K mi. Mystic cheap oil 15-50 ; very little or NO usage

83 M.B. 300D came with Rotella 15-40; changed a few times; probably
changeling to Mystic 15-50 as it is cheaper ESPECIALLY BY THE 5 gal.
pail; might stick with 15-40 rotella for winter??? or mystic 15-40???

I change my oil filter every 500-3000 miles, or sooner if i feel
like doing something; at these change rates I can't see spending $60-$70
for M1

Good thing i know how to work on these diesels rebuild, as using CHEAP
oil; SOMEDAY???, I might have to work on them

Speaking of British cars with V8's I once looked into buying a Triumph
TR8.

Coupla years ago I stopped by a local used car lot to peek at the
Rolls silver something-or-other. Was cool looking, but no doubt
a nightmare in the running department. Also in some serious need
of refinishing of the woodwork. There was a potential buyer ready
to take it on a test drive, so I didn't get much of a chance to look
it over. They seemed to think they had an incipient bidding war
on their hands. Ha!

Well, I'd say you didn't do it right then. (As the symptoms tend to
speak for themselves. If it works _worse_ after you've gotten done
with it...)

It happens. You'll just need to do it again. You _did_ use paint
stripper on it first, right? Very important, IMHO. The varnish
coating contaminates your attempts to resolder the joints otherwise.
I think the first one I repaired required several attempts before
I made it better rather than worse. The last several have been
successes on the first shot, I guess practice helps.

climate controls, Ok, Tach. amplifiers (TRANSDUCERS, according to
trained

They can call it a transducer, but that doesn't make it one. The thing
in

the can is an amplifier for the transducer that is mounted on the front
(or back) of the engine. (Formally, a transducer changes one form of
energy to another. The canned doodad takes a weak electrical signal
from
the variable reluctance sensor [transducer] and boosts it to a signal
that

resembles what comes out of a set of points, which can then be fed to a
conventional tachometer circuit.)

Aye, Skipper!

I was just ribbing you a lil, The 126 Is the best road (trekking) car ever
made, with the possible exception of the 6.9 and the 600. Welcome to the
SDL club. They are awesome automobiles, whether is descent or ascent, or
level flight attitude.

As for hauling fuel, btdt. In 1973 i got some cheap fuel oil, so I put 2
30 gallon barrels in the trunk of my 200D, with still enough room for
baggage. I filled the barrels and the tank with cheap #2 and took of for 2
weeks in DC. it was great, but i had to buy a little fuel on the way
back. Unfortunately, I never was able to get any more cheap #2, so the
extra 2 tanks were removed. The 2 extra tanks gave me about a 2500 mile
range. 1000 out, 100 driving around there, and 5-700 miles toward the
return trip. Has your new ship been assigned an NCC number yet? Kleb has
the Enterprise, so I assume that is NCC 1701

I joined MBCA in 1989 and have stuck with the club in various

Large position in this year's election. Results will be known next
Tuesday/Wednesday.

I do agree with you about the state of the club in years past. It
has improved greatly in the last four years and will continue to do
so. There was a recent RFP distributed to evaluate/select a new

last issue in Jan/Feb 2007. A NEW editor will take over with the
March/April issue. Entirely new organization, not related to the
future former editor. The club will regain editorial oversight.

During my tenure, if elected, I will make sure the club belongs to

Used Cars

Times OnlineAugust 28, 2005

Mercedes-Benz E270 CDI
By Jason Dawe of The Sunday Times

In July 2002, having waited six months for the new Mercedes- Benz
E-class to hit the showrooms, I borrowed one. After driving several
hundred miles I was left with one overwhelming emotion: disappointment.

I loved the sleek lines and the clever technology; the huge boot
swallowed the largest load. But none of this could hide the car’s
Achilles heel: its engine. The 177bhp V6 petrol engine fitted to the
E240 sounded harsh when pushed, performance felt moderate and after 800
miles it had averaged only 21mpg.

But my reaction was out of step; almost universally the car was heaped
with praise. And it was 18 months before my opinion was to change.

*
This time I drove an E270 diesel. It was blessed with virtually
identical power to the petrol car on paper but in reality the leap in
torque produced a smooth wall of power that made the car genuinely fun
to drive, and it also averaged close to 40mpg. At last I understood what
everyone had been saying: this was quite possibly the best executive car
money could buy.

I also tried the more modestly priced E220 diesel with 150bhp. It still
felt good, and the 3.2 litre E320 diesel with 204bhp was a real hoot.
With these cars Mercedes proved that not only had diesel engine
technology caught up with the petrol equivalents but actually eclipsed them.

In fact only one petrol version is comparable with the diesel. The E500
boasts a 5 litre V8 that kicks out 306bhp and while economy is not its
forte you get huge performance — 0-62mph in 5.8sec and a top speed
limited at 155mph. A used example will cost about £25,000 and makes an
excellent buy. Both the E200 and E320 petrol engines, boasting 163bhp
and 224bhp respectively and introduced in 2003, are best avoided.

Once you’ve chosen your engine you have to decide on the trim level. The
entry-level Classic is far from basic with climate control, alloys,
leather steering wheel, electric windows and auto dimming rear mirror as
standard. It has front, side and head airbags, antilock brakes and
traction control. The car scored five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests.

Commanding a premium of about £1,500 on a used example is the Elegance
model which adds walnut wood veneer, automatic rain-sensing wipers,
power headlamp washers and electrically folding door mirrors. For about
£750 more the used Avantgarde adds flashier alloy wheels, sports
suspension, bi-xenon lights, blue tinted glass and a dark wood interior.

Whichever you plump for it’s best to choose an automatic box. They fetch
a premium of about £1,250 over the six-speed manuals but you’ll enjoy
near-identical performance, equivalent economy and easier resale.

On the move the car feels smooth, quiet and well planted on the road,
the clever electronics intervening when the car reaches its limit.
Leather upholstery and sat nav are desirable options and add about £500
apiece to used values, but multicontour seats that massage your back and
Airmatic suspension do little to enhance value.

Whichever E-class you choose it’s a pretty safe bet that you will be
buying a great car. Just make sure it’s diesel.

I am not familiar with the terms of the new contract, but have been
assured that it will be a positive cash flow to the club.

Also, will the club keep the advertising revenue instead of the

Yes. Basic answer and I'm not aware of the details since I'm still
just a vanilla member despite being a candidate for DAL... I would
hope that in the future the financial statements in the Star Magazine
will be a good deal more definitive

These funds would help the club dramatically
and allow the central office to help the sections fund special
events like
social competitive drives, dinners, meets, concours, etc. all of
which the

rank and file greatly enjoy IMHO.
Given a positive cash impact of the revenue from the Star, I want to
see some of the Raffle profit directed to Section support.

Also, it'd be nice to see The Star as a

For the forseeable future, the Star will remain 6x a year. But, it
is a goal of mine and I believe many others to get to a monthly
magazine.

For many
members, The Star is the biggest connection to the club and more
issues

would provide a more cohesive feeling -

And last, but not least, the membership needs to grow through a
coordinated effort of all members, dealers, indys and wider
publication of why it's a good idea to join MBCA!

Thanks for being handy to answer questions -

That could be a Silver Spur, one of the names I remember on the Rolls.
Nice car, but a total nightmare to work on too. I'd be thinking sure, I'll
bid on that.. only as long as the bidding starts at a $1 ;)

Speaking of British cars with V8's I once looked into buying a Triumph
 TR8.

Coupla years ago I stopped by a local used car lot to peek at the
Rolls silver something-or-other. Was cool looking, but no doubt
a nightmare in the running department. Also in some serious need
of refinishing of the woodwork. There was a potential buyer ready
to take it on a test drive, so I didn't get much of a chance to look
it over. They seemed to think they had an incipient bidding war
 on their hands. Ha!

[MBZ] Vickers VT27 Steering pump

2006-10-09 Thread 72benz250
Hi all,

Looks like I resolved my Zenith 32/40 carb problems, I think. Well I fired her
up on Sunday, and moved her, part of the problem with the carbs, and when I
shut her down There was a spray from the steering pump reservoir top.

When I opened it, the fluid was pink from all the air bubbles. Then I found the
puddle under the pump :(

Ok, so I found the seal kit and the manuals on the CD. On job 47-720 it has a
few specialized tools. I only see the sealing ring puller being used.

First question is can I rent a generic tool set from my local parts shop to do
this job? how difficult is it to replace the seals?

Any tips or tricks before I dive into this project?

Thanks in advance.

Seen in a front yard near me. (Eaton Rapids, MI 48827)
175k on the clock, big dent in driver's door, but opens and closes.
Decent dark blue interior, silver-blue exterior. Cracked windshield,
fog lights, missing hood star and grill center. Grill frame seems OK.
Something strange mounted under the instrument panel, I should have
photographed it. I have a silver '87 W201 parts car, could supply a
wrong color door and grill insert, but my hood star was vandalized
and my windshield is worse than the one on this car. If you want
the car and will pick it up before Halloween, I would be willing
to buy it and drive it to my house (if it's driveable, I'm not
going to trailer it for you). 517-663-4073 is the phone number in
the window.
Can email the few pics I took of it, but don't think I should
clutter the list with them.
Mitch.
