Re: [MBZ] Another Transmission Problem
Could it be you have a selector problem? Or perhaps you have a problem with the valve body, like a sticky valve that is now stuck open? I am guessing here but would advise to get under the car and make sure the selector is selecting. Other than that it is expert time. Perhaps drain the fluid and drop the pan to see if there is anything untoward in there. - Original Message - From: BIll Phelps [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Thursday, October 19, 2006 6:03 AM Subject: [MBZ] Another Transmission Problem I have a problem with my 85 300SD transmission that I would like to explore. Re: [MBZ] cold(er) weather starting issues?
I also wondered about valve adjustment etc. Absolutely check the valves. When they're too tight, once the temperature drops to a certain point it's like a light switch gets flipped off. That point is where a valve start to hang open even just a little bit. That kills the compression, just when you need it the most. The glow plug system is also fairly critical. -- Jim
Re: [MBZ] cold(er) weather starting issues?
Plugging in the block heater to make the engine start points to two possible problems. The heating of the engine by the block heater is enough to cause the fuel to vaporize faster, makes the fuel warmer, taking a major burden off the glow plugs to start the engine I would remove the glow plugs and the ones with a black tip indicate duds . The short time the glow plug light is on, after trying several times to start the engine, might indicate a glow plug relay is not operating as designed... Wait a couple of hours and then turn the ignition key to start, after awhile the light will go out and then wait for a clicking sound, around 20 seconds, this sound tell you the relay is open and interrupts current flow to the glow plugsTip in cold weather, Do the above three times or more in cold weather to start the diesel. Started my 300 TD at -5F without a block heater Another tip: use a hair dryer blowing over the injectors and fuel line to start in cold weather takes about 20 minutes to work Bill 1981 300 TD Curt Raymond wrote: Randy, My first thought was gelled fuel but if it started with a warm block thats probably not it. My 240D would start at pretty much any temp down to freezing even without glowplugs, it wasn't happy about it, it'd need to crank for longer than I liked and it'd belch black smoke when it started but it did start... So yeah, maybe its time to replace glowplugs and adjust the valves. Give it a shot of isopropyl alcohol to sequester any water in the tank and maybe a shot of anti-gel just in case. Re: [MBZ] cold(er) weather starting issues?
Before replacing the glow plugs have the valves adjusted, particularly if you don't have any records for the car prior to your ownership that indicate when they were last adjusted. This needs to be done once a year, regardless, and it will make a HUGE difference in ease of starting. Why not just get a rattle can of foaming insulation and spray that on? Would result in the same effect for noise and heat reduction with no decrease in flammability. Re: [MBZ] How many gears in an 83' 300D?
All of the 123/126's I've driven started in 1st gear. I double checked this morning on the way to work in my SD (soon to be for sale...) and it will start in first. Sometimes it will shift into 2nd within 1 second of starting, but it shifts none the less. This is with the gear shift in D. Could this be related to the bowden cable adjustment? I've played with my SD's adjustment enough so that it has even shifts all the way up and will down shift when under no throttle and I move the gear shift from D-S. Does anyone have factory documentation showing that these transmissions are suppose to start in 2nd unless the kickdown switch is activated? -- Luther KB5QHU Alma, Ark '87 300SDL (270,491 mi) head case? Re: [MBZ] Hood pad life (or lack of)
Up until the 300D, no MB diesels had hood pads. The inexpensive alternative is to let it crumble and drive on. I know, this is offensive to purists but so is carpet pad and tinfoil. My preference is to glue on a new pad, but doing nothing may be better than spray on foam or carpet pad and tinfoil. Besides it is kind of entertaining to hear the clatter and have people tell you your engine is about to come apart. At 10:07 AM 10/19/2006, you wrote: I think what I bought was junk. Re: [MBZ] How many gears in an 83' 300D?
Good Lord! If you are correct the low gear must be for pulling out stumps. I have never pulled it down into low gear manually to my knowledge. I have never felt like it needed a gear below that in which it normally starts from a stop in Drive. I have sometimes thought it could use a higher gear on the highway when it is buzzing along at 70 plus MPH. I sort of wish it would slide into a higher gear on flat ground and reduce the revs a bit. Will have to try it out on the way home tonight and see if it does appear to have a lower gear. I guess if I manually shift into the lowest range and then shift up I should ultimately be able to count 3 shifts and 4 gears. Interesting, as I am sure someone on this list earlier assured me it was only a 3 speed tranny. Memory is going perhaps??? Re: [MBZ] How many gears in an 83' 300D?
Well, first in the four speeds on the column is good to get you rolling, but not much more. When starting out from a stop sign and making a turn, the first shift point on a diesel was as soon as you are in the intersection and turning. It took some coordination to make that shift in a turn. I think the gearing in the autos are pretty much the same as the analogous manual trans if you were really speedy, you could make one shift going into the turn and the next while exiting the intersection. Howdy - (This is my second attempt to send this - don't know where in cyber-space the 1st one went) I was looking at my rear calipers and it looks like one piston hasn't moved while the other piston has moved 1/2 its travel which means one piston is sticking the caliper probably needs to be rebuilt.I know how to rebuild calipers - just rebuilt my 911 calipers - but have never rebuilt Mercedes W124 calipers - is it a big deal rebuilding them or should I go ahead and replace them? The manual calls for a special tool to remove the pistons - naturally I don't have one - can I get the pistons out using air or pumping fluid thru the caliper?? Also - the fittings on the metal brake lines seem to be corroded and naturally a wrench will not fit them securely. I'll replace them at the same time that I fix the calipers replace the rubber hoses also - any tricks other than vice grips? I'll put some PB Blaster on the fittings before hand but it looks like I'll end up destroying the fittings so it's good I;ll be replacing them.
