Re: [MBZ] Another Transmission Problem

2006-10-19 Thread Hendrik Riessen
Could it be you have a selector problem? Or perhaps you have a problem with
the valve body, like a sticky valve that is now stuck open? I am guessing
here but would advise to get under the car and make sure the selector is
selecting. Other than that it is expert time. Perhaps drain the fluid and
drop the pan to see if there is anything untoward in there.

Subject: [MBZ] Another Transmission Problem

I have a problem with my 85 300SD transmission that I would like to
explore.

The transmission and torque converter were replaced in Oct 2003. It has
logged
30k miles. I bought it from Rusty. It is filled with Mobil1Synthetic fluid
.

It has been performing flawlessly until recently.

In the past few weeks, I noticed the forward shifts, all of them, where
harsher than
in the past. I attributed this to vacuum and made a note to go over the
vac
system soon. However, yesterday I parked the car and made a quick dash
into

a store. I
returned to the car, fired it up, put it in drive, but the transmission
did

not engage. Not
forward or reverse. Revving up the engine makes no difference.Fluid level
fine, nice and pink.

Other than the harsher shifts, there were no other symptoms, sounds,
on-the-road problems, or fluid leaks. It simply stopped working.

Does this sound like a valve body seal problem? Maybe a bad torque
converter? Modulator?

Bill Phelps

Re: [MBZ] cold(er) weather starting issues?

2006-10-19 Thread Jim Cathey

I also wondered about valve adjustment etc.

Absolutely check the valves. When they're too tight, once the
temperature drops to a certain point it's like a light switch gets
flipped off. That point is where a valve start to hang open even
just a little bit. That kills the compression, just when you need
it the most.

The glow plug system is also fairly critical.

Re: [MBZ] cold(er) weather starting issues?

2006-10-19 Thread Bill Gallagher
Plugging in the block heater to make the engine start points to two
possible problems.
The heating of the engine by the block heater is enough to cause the
fuel to vaporize faster, makes the fuel warmer, taking a major burden
off the glow plugs to start the engine I would remove the glow
plugs and the ones with a black tip indicate duds .
The short time the glow plug light is on, after trying several times
to start the engine, might indicate a glow plug relay is not operating
as designed... Wait a couple of hours and then turn the ignition key to
start, after awhile the light will go out and then wait for a clicking
sound, around 20 seconds, this sound tell you the relay is open and
interrupts current flow to the glow plugsTip in cold weather, Do the
above three times or more in cold weather to start the diesel. Started
my 300 TD at -5F without a block heater Another tip: use a hair
dryer blowing over the injectors and fuel line to start in cold weather
takes about 20 minutes to work

So yeah, maybe its time to replace glowplugs and adjust the valves. Give it a

Probably also a good time for new fuel filters and at least check the airfilter

2006-10-19 Thread andrew strasfogel

Before replacing the glow plugs have the valves adjusted, particularly if
you don't have any records for the car prior to your ownership that indicate
when they were last adjusted. This needs to be done once a year,
regardless, and it will make a HUGE difference in ease of starting.

Why not just get a rattle can of foaming insulation and spray that on?
Would result in the same effect for noise and heat reduction with no

Re: [MBZ] How many gears in an 83' 300D?

2006-10-19 Thread Luther

All of the 123/126's I've driven started in 1st gear. I double checked this
morning on the way to work in my SD (soon to be for sale...) and it will start
in first. Sometimes it will shift into 2nd within 1 second of
starting, but it
shifts none the less. This is with the gear shift in D. Could this be
related

to the bowden cable adjustment? I've played with my SD's adjustment enough so
that it has even shifts all the way up and will down shift when under no
throttle and I move the gear shift from D-S.
Does anyone have factory documentation showing that these transmissions are
suppose to start in 2nd unless the kickdown switch is activated?

How many gears in a 300D?
2 in each of 4 doors = 8
4 to pump the oil = 4
2 in the steering gear = 2
2 in each front seat = 4
2 for each forward speed in the trans = 8
3 for reverse in the trans = 3

A cursory tally indicates there are at least 33 gears in an 83 300D, not

Good Lord! If you are correct the low gear must be for pulling out stumps. I
have never pulled it down into low
gear manually to my knowledge. I have never felt like it needed a gear below
that in which it normally starts from
a stop in Drive. I have sometimes thought it could use a higher gear on the
highway when it is buzzing along at 70

reduce the revs a bit.

Will have to try it out on the way home tonight and see if it does appear to

Well, first in the four speeds on the column is good to get you rolling,
but not much more. When starting out from a stop sign and making a turn,
the first shift point on a diesel was as soon as you are in the
intersection and turning. It took some coordination to make that shift in
a turn. I think the gearing in the autos are pretty much the same as the
analogous manual trans if you were really speedy, you could make one shift
going into the turn and the next while exiting the intersection. I am
talking normal 2 lane city streets here.

115's are 4 speeds, they start in 2nd. You have to push pedal down all
the way and hit the kickdown to go into first, or manually shift it there.

I agree, all of the older MB diesels with auto tranny's I've owned
started

  out in 2nd.

I can't speak for the newer ones (95 and beyond).

  Thanks,

Sounds like our 95 Toyota 4Runner with 3.0 V6 and a manual 5 speed. 1st gets
you moving but you aren't going
accross the intersection without shifting unless you want to hit redline or
better on the tach.

[MBZ] Rear Calipers - 91 300D 2.5T

2006-10-19 Thread LarryT

Howdy -
(This is my second attempt to send this - don't know where in cyber-space
the 1st one went)

I was looking at my rear calipers and it looks like one piston hasn't moved
while the other piston has moved 1/2 its travel which means one piston is
sticking the caliper probably needs to be rebuilt.I know how to
rebuild

calipers - just rebuilt my 911 calipers - but have never rebuilt Mercedes
W124 calipers - is it a big deal rebuilding them or should I go ahead
and replace them?

The manual calls for a special tool to remove the pistons - naturally I
don't have one - can I get the pistons out using air or pumping fluid thru
the caliper??

Also - the fittings on the metal brake lines seem to be corroded and
naturally a

wrench will not fit them securely. I'll replace them at the same time that
I fix the calipers replace the rubber hoses also - any tricks other than
vice
grips? I'll put some PB Blaster on the fittings before hand but it looks
like I'll end

up destroying the fittings so it's good I;ll be replacing them.

Sorry to ramble -- it sure would be nice to have a lift!

TIA -

I can verify this from experience - driving the '70 220D, manual on
the column - all four speeds. It was a great car until it rusted out
from under me, it's first 100,000 miles were in MN, daily driver.

Nope - both of my 115 (1976) 300D's had four speed auto trannys., and
my Dad's 115 (1972) 220D had a four speed auto tranny. All of them
started in 2nd.

Almost - my 450SLC has a three speed auto - first gear red lines at 59
MPH. Road Track noted that you could break the speed limit and never
leave first gear.

even the 110 automatics were/are 4 speeds. MB never put a 2 speed or 3
