Re: [MBZ] Holiday project

2009-12-17 Thread LarryT
I got roughly 20HP (on top of 150hp base) - torque was not tested that I
know of. My engine wasn't tested but another similar engine was tested and
got 20 hp.

As far as it being inefficient, on my 911 the fuel is squirted directly into
the intake valve. My system uses components from the CIS system such as the
Throttle Body and intake runners both of which move air but no fuel.It
all depends on the design of the system. There's a huge amount of
flexibility to the Megasquirt system but design of the system components is
critical.

I'm not familiar with any MB megasquirt systems but the following will help
anyone find out what others have experienced. Below are links to some very
comprehensive information:

Forum of users of all MegaSquirt systems - http://www.msefi.com/index.php

Additional Forums - http://www.megamanual.com/forums.htm

Mercedes Users -

Tuning/Adjusting Instructions - http://www.megamanual.com/mtabcon.htm

Not that it matters here, but PMO developed a set of absolutely gorgeous
Individual Throttle Bodies to use with EFI.

If anyone wants additional info I can probably locate it.

Good luck -

So, does the megasquirt system deliver equal of more power, and what
happened to fuel economy?
I still wonder if converting a CIS system to an electronically controlled,
squirt as needed vs dribble all the time would be significantly more
effecient or not.

There aren't really any Pacific Rim products I'd want to put on my car,
but I've been really impressed with my limited experiences with
Taiwanese headlights. Comparing side-by-side an OE Hella euro headlight

the 123 appeared similarly well made.

i tend to have a preference for taiwan oolong myself. actually, Taiwan used
to be our china (ROC - Republic of China) before we sold them out for big
china (PRC-- People's Republic of China). today, the usa does not recognize
ROC. i remember that they have to compete in the atlanta olympics not as
taiwan or formosa or republic of china but as chinese taipei.

and i will say for the sake of honesty that all of my issues are with PRC
and that I have no fight with ROC, so Taiwan is kosher by me and would not
automatically fall under the general category of cheap chinese garbage.

Re: [MBZ] Euro Headlight Update

2009-12-17 Thread Rich Thomas
A buddy who was looking to outsource production of some all-bidness
components told me about visiting a brand new Taiwan factory. It was a
huge facility, full of state-of-the-art computer-driven machine tools,
few humans involved, ready to start cranking out parts for whatever.
Very impressive. The guy who had built the factory was a highly
educated engineer/business man (probably educated in the US, he did not
ask about that) who knew how to do things right and was prepared to do
so. Apparently there are various levels of quality, depending on which
supplier one picks and what constraints are put on them. While I am
sure some Red Chinese parts are made in backyard foundries and sweat
shops, there are also very high quality producers there and in the
good China. It does not make a lot of sense not to use them if the
price and quality are there compared to domestic production options,
unless there are political/legal factors. I doubt if the euros are so
parochial as to ignore those options.

just get a cheap malaysian seiko. you get good quality and design for under

been running since being bought at the PX back in Vietnam days without any

Re: [MBZ] steering shafts

2009-12-17 Thread RELNGSON
If you spike the steering wheel so they have to look at it all the
time, it might have deterrent value. By the time the steering shaft comes
flying back at them, it's too late to change their driving habits

About ten years back, my friend CB moved back to Tacoma from Bend OR and he
needed to get the remaining two of his cars home. So three of us set off
from Tacoma in his Diesel Suburban (Banks Turbo) with the enclosed car trailer
in tow. We stopped at his hangar at the Bend airport where the Cad-Allard
and the '49 Super 88 convert were stored before heading to the hotel. The
Allard went into the trailer and I drove the Oldsmobile.

The Olds was one of those light green ones with the dark green leather
interior and a black top. Sort of a Saturday night parade car. The big steering
wheel had a half-round hub pointing right at my chest and I knew the other
end was right out front. With the way it drove, I am convinced those Daytona
Beach race drivers were real heroes because although it moved right along,
changing direction was not it's strong suit. Anything over 70mph meant
playing close attention to piloting the thing.

I did remember to put the Hydra-Matic in reverse when parking it.

Re: [MBZ] Euro Headlight Update

2009-12-17 Thread Peter Frederick
Modern Seiko's are the best value in mechanical watches going. The
movements aren't that pretty to look at, but they run forever, are
very easy to service, and use state of the art lubricants. Unless
you drop it from a great height or a truck runs over it, it should
give decades of faultless service.

The older 6xxx series movements have slightly better timekeeping due
to a larger balance, but ti's not impossible to get the 7S26 to hold
nearly as well as a quartx watch!

I've had a number of them apart, and at this moment have two early
70's 6119 parts movements on my desk that were running, sans case,
whien I got them yesterday. Very robust.

The only service I would suggest on an new one is that if you are
left handed and wear the watch on your right hand, you should have a
watchmaker invert the timing of the autowind rotor. This will keep
the watch wound better, they are set at the factory to wind most
efficiently stem down, and if you wear then on the right wrist, it's
set at the least efficient spot, not the most. Otherwise, once timed
correclty, it should run 20-30 years with no service, although it
won't hurt to have someone clean and oil it every 5 years or so.

Rolex and several other Swill makes manufacture lovely watches, but
you aren't going to get a working one for less than $200, which is
about the price of a new Seiko in a nice case.

there are tons of quality vintage handwinds out there that can be had for a
song . i'm wearing a cheapie right now that was sold to me NOS from hong
kong for about $30 delivered

any cheap swiss wind up watch with at least 15 jewels will be adequate for
your purposes. lots of them made in teh 60s and 70s. i own two such
cheapies, a favre leuba and a glycine and both work quite well for everyday
wear. be aware, however, that they will not be watertight or shockproof, so
if you are looking to do an sort of activity in them, look elsewhere.

lots of stuff too from 40s and 50s as well that are pretty nice, albeit they
tend to be much smaller.

the trick is to get one that is ready to wear on the cheap rather than one
that needs attention.

Re: [MBZ] Watches - was Euro Headlight Update

2009-12-17 Thread Peter Frederick
Actually, autowind watches are more accurate than manual wind watches
because they spend much more time fully wound. The higher spring
tension results in larger balance rotation, hence less influence on
the rate from watch position and hand/arm motion. This is also why
you should wind a manual watch just before putting in on for the day
(or evening). As the spring tension drops, the balance rotates less
and less, so minor changes in bearing drag, etc have more influence
on the rate.

Autowind watches have mainsprings that slip at full wind.

Given that most have at least 40 hours power reserve, in good
condition an autowind watch will also rarely be set, so wear on the
setting parts is reduced as well.

Peter, who is only a novice watchmaker, if that.

Re: [MBZ] Watches - was Euro Headlight Update

2009-12-17 Thread Peter Frederick
1960 through 1980 was the golden age of mechanical wristwatches.
Many of them from that era will run just fine, although a clean and
oil is really required -- just because they will run doesn't mean
that they are clean, and in particular non-waterproof cased watches
will have dust on the pivots. This dust will grind the pivots down,
eventually causing problems, and parts are getting hard to find for
many watches.

However, even if you have to have one cleaned and oiled, you can get
a fine watch for $100 or so, and it will outlast you. My watch
tonight while I was out and about was a Gruen Precision from the mid
50's (company whet under in 1958) that worked perfectly when I got
it. Paid something like $10 plus shipping. I've gotten a couple
Seiko's off eBay in fairly worn but working condition for $0.99 plus
shipping, too. Trick with them is that there is usually no manual
wind on the automatics, so they can only be checked for operation by
shaking them side to side for 30 seonds or so to wind up the
mainspring some, or open the case and use a screwdriver to give it
some tension. Not everyone knows this, and three or four I've bought
were running nicely when I opened the package.
