[MBZ] Fitting a 240D W123 engine in to W115
I'm sure it can be done with a little surgery , I have a friend that has a toasted 240D in a W115 chassis and now wants to replace it with a W123 240D engine. I know the oil filter housing from the W123 will not fit - but can one transfer the oil filter unit from the broken engine to the new one? I'd read about others reporting such happy news, I'm glad to add my name to that list. I have known this needed replacement for the last 10k miles or so, and ordered the part about two years ago from BuyMBparts.COM way back then. The pulley wheel was just out of the plane of the rest of the pulleys and the belt, and by carefully pushing on the lever with a stick I could make a change to the engine's noise at idle. However, recently the car developed some really nasty noises at around 900 RPM that I was convinced were due to a loose exhaust bit or some other piece of the motor that was loose. I'd also order the 8mm stubby hex in socket form 'special tool' for R/R the viscous fan clutch. It is too stubby in my opinion for loosening the screw, but just fine for applying 45 Nm of torque. I needed a strap wrench to hold the pulley still for the R/R of the fan clutch. In addition to the lack of a 12mm hex, there was one other problem. The new tensioner did not come with an end cap, so I'll need to order one of those. Rather irritating that the cap didn't come with it. I fashioned a temporary cover from a piece of Tyvek-like material and a zip tie; that should keep the road grime out of the pivot bearing workings until a new cap arrives. Also, removing the camshaft gear is also not necessary (at least on my engine - haven't checked the chain stretch yet so maybe I have a really looong chain helping out here). I was out in the garage working on my '87 replacing the belt tensioner, when that project came to a sudden halt due to a tool shortage (don't own a 12mm hex key). Decided to mess around with the '95 as I'd gotten some marking paint and I thought it was a good time to remove the camshaft gear. Pulled the valve cover and marked the gear and chain position, then while waiting for that to dry I started pulling on the timing chain at the IP timer to see how necessary the special tool was. To my surprise, after just a few minutes of fiddling the IP timer came right out. Installed the new one, and then re-installed the injection pump. Still need to hook up all the injection pump connections, but she's back in place. So, spent a few satisfying hours in the garage, and now I have a good excuse to go tool shopping tomorrow. Remaining work on the '95: Hook up all the injection pump connections Repair deteriorating wire insulation in the engine bay (liquid electrical tape) Remove old fuel return line bits from injector nipples, install new lines Diagnose/repair the engine missing and low power (new fuel filters first, then maybe injectors or delivery valves are the culprits). Re: [MBZ] After Action Report - '87 300TD accessory belttensionerreplacement
Checked them, used a 1/2 inch bar and slid it between edge of mount and frame, and both sides passed that test. Still, I'm tempted to replace them as well as the rest of the drive train rubber just to see how quiet she'll get. That may be a project for a warmer time. Last two mornings we've had temps in the mid 20's here, which is pretty darn cold for Charleston. This a.m. it was 27 deg F. Glowed the '87 once until the glow plug relay shut off, then re-started the relay, let her glow for another 20 seconds or so and she fired up fairly quickly. Way to go , Curt. As you now, that alternator belt will need frequent tightening -I think we have discussed the squeal feature before. Dwight Dwight E. The guy there amazed me when I explained that there were two lengths You need the longer one. Uhh, yeah. Replacement is easy except I had a helluva time getting the PS pump belt out of the way, I guess I don't really understand how the pump moves. I got 'er though. Then getting the stupid alternator tight enough... And of course just now I realize I haven't tightened the alternator mount bolt... Crap. Oh well, I took it for a ride and that went well enough so a quick tightening and it'll be really done. The engine isn't wet with coolant anymore either. -Curt ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] glowing in the cold
I've never found a temp yet that my 601 won't start at. Might find out this winter... I used to fart around with double glow in the 240D, lately I've been just glowing and waiting another 20 seconds or so after the light goes out, then crank until it starts which so far it always does even down in the teens. Thats with conventional oil. If I can get another leak or two fixed I'll put the Mobil 1 to it and not worry down to 0F... Re: [MBZ] glowing in the cold
Thanks for reminding everyone of this, Curt... the light is only a suggested glow time. The glow continues for much longer after the light goes out. You can hear when the glow stops... the relay goes clunk!. My normal cold starting procedure for a OM616 or 617 is to glow until the relay clunks off, then start cranking with my foot on the pedal... don't stop cranking until it starts. 30 seconds or longer... whatever it takes. The cranking will slowly get faster and faster. The owners manual clearly states long cranking is recommended. If you stop, you might not have enough juice to glow and crank again. I've started OM617s well into the single digits with conventional oil... its all about the long glow, followed by the long crank. And having a good battery and starter, of course. In another post I sent an attachment and a what is this query. Its 9k too big (49k vs Kaleb's 40k limit) so it maybe hasn't come through yet. But anyway, heres the little devil on eBay. http://tinyurl.com/y8glkf9 Oil breather tank I'd forgotten that the thing sits right over a pipe down into the oil pan... So it takes excess oil from the valve cover and intake and sends it back? Mine seems to leak, at least theres oil all over behind and under it which makes me think it puts the oil there, no particular amount of oil on it though. -Curt ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Yup - both of trhem are fine cars! I think the 92 actually leaks more oil than it burns - from the front crankshaft seal, and perhaps the injection pump o-ring. I've stopped worrying about the temperature since I started driving 60x engines and running M1 -- they just start regardless of the temp -- at least down to 0. One glow, and off you go. Re: [MBZ] After Action Report - '87 300TD accessory belttensionerreplacement
You have bad glow plugs or something else wrong -- my 87 300D fires up with 2 seconds of cranking (or less) at 6F after waiting for the glow plug light to go out, then another 5-10 sec. Fires on all six, too. If your GP lamp isn't coming on or is flashing, you have at least one and probably more than one bad (open or high resistance) GP. Re: [MBZ] What is this?
That is a vortex oil separator, and yes, it removes oil mist from the blowby and returns it to the pan. Two failures: The seal in the pipe and the foot valve -- if the valve sticks or the blowby pipe is clogged up, oil will spill out and make a mess. I believe there is also a seal inside, but since I don't have one, I'm not sure. At any rate, the oil should all go down the pipe into the engine, not outside. Re: [MBZ] glowing in the cold
my process when I had 61x cars that I HAD to start was to turn key on till light goes off 3 times, on the 3rd time, wait 30 seconds after the light goes off, then start cranking till it starts. Dont let up because you probably will not get a 2nd chance. Jaime Kopchinski wrote: Thanks for reminding everyone of this, Curt... the light is only a suggested glow time. [MBZ] What is this thing?
In doing the water pump I had to remove a mystery item from my '83 240D. It lives in front of the air filter and has a hose that comes from the intake manifold and another from the top of the valve cover. It feels like is made of foam and seems to have holes or casting irregularities in the bottom. It also seems like it leaks oil. Its got oil on it and everything below and behind it is covered with oil. That oil has been a mystery to me for awhile since theres really nowhere else it could come from. Older cars don't seem to have it (or at least not the ones I could find on eBay) they seem to have the two hoses connected. Something in the back of my mind says oil separator but don't let that lead you anywhere. I've attached a pic (eBay is good for something) for reference. So questions: 1. Are these known to leak oil? 2. Where do I get a replacement? Kaleb? 3. Could I just put a longer hose and take the whole thing out? Thanks! -Curt -- next part -- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Re: [MBZ] glowing in the cold
Yup crank until you win or crash... I find that if I'm waiting for the relay I'll never hear it, if I'd only turned the power on to open the window the thunk will scare the bejezus out of me! Having the valves set recently helps too as does running the car hard so its not all carboned up. Some years ago I had my friend's 116 300SD for a couple days. When I got it it sounded like the battery was dying (sounded like it was cranking slow I mean) so as a good friend I figured I'd clean the battery cables just in case. That didn't help so I swapped in the battery from my 240D which made no difference. So I shrugged my shoulders and put his battery back in. The car was his wife's and she mostly just made little trips to the store or to school with the kids or whatever. I drove it home from work and then out to dinner in a distant town with my wife and for a couple other things. The thing I noticed about it (and I've been told is common on the 116) is that it wanted to get into top gear really quick so I started dropping the shifter down a gear (I forget what its marked, I haven't driven an auto MB since I drove Fred's 190D) around town. When I started the car to return it I noticed that it sounded better. On the way back to work to return it I noticed it drove better, seemed to have more power too. My friend commented the next day that it was like I'd brought him a new car and wanted to know what I did. I told him to tell his wife to not have it in drive around town... -Curt Date: Mon, 4 Jan 2010 15:31:12 -0500 From: Jaime Kopchinski jaime...@gmail.com To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] glowing in the cold Message-ID: bc94d7931001041231n674ecf38l72c5ee0c892b5...@mail.gmail.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Thanks for reminding everyone of this, Curt... the light is only a suggested glow time. Re: [MBZ] 240D alternator belt replaced
Oddly enough, I've determined my alternator needs replacing on the 300D. The bearing is going out enough that the car barely starts and, unless you keep your foot in it at idle, it dies and stops fast and hard. I didn't think that an alternator had enough umph to stop a diesel engine cold. Thats an oil separator. It filters the oil from the ventilation off the valve cover and drains in back into the oil pan, if I remember correctly. For giggles, I just tried starting the 240D with -5F temps outside, and -15F when I woke up this morning. The block heater has been plugged in non-stop for at least the last week and the car was driven on Christmas day. 60 seconds preglow, cranked a while (did NOT crank until the battery died) and no start. If I really had to drive it, I'd do several 60 seconds preglows and then go for broke. But hey ... it is OLD, only one year younger than my oldest kid! At its age, I don't expect miracles. It is a senior citizen and deserves to be treated as such. That is why I drive a 300E in this sort of temps. Re: [MBZ] CL Portland, OR: Surplus WWII anti-aircraft searchlight and other goodies
When I was in college, I bought a 66 bronco and put a blade on it. For lights while plowing, I had two cheap fog lights mounted on a bar on top. I took one of the bulbs out and went shopping at NAPA. Seems as there is a size of aircraft landing light that is the same size (4 round) A pair of those really lit up the parking lot I was working on. For driving, I had another set of 4 driving lights. Once in a while, when someone tried to blind me with their lights, I too would flip on the off-road lights for a sec or two. It always made the offending driver submissive. When ever I lit them up, people paid attention. I had a pair of Dick Cepek (?) 100W off-roaders on my old Blazer, they would throw a pretty tight beam at least a mile down the beach. If some beemer driver refused to turn off the aux lights after a flash of my brights I would light them up with those things, which I had aimed just so... You want aux lights? I'll show you some aux lights. --R Craig McCluskey wrote: On Sun, 03 Jan 2010 15:33:24 -0500 Frederick W Moir fred.s...@verizon.net wrote: Alles. Tired of oncoming headlights blinding you? When I was in college, a friend worked for a plating company making hand-held light units that used their nickle-deposition-plated deep parabolic reflectors. The flashlights had the electronics to power a 100 watt short-arc xenon lamp that had its arc at the focus of of the parabola. We went up one night on the roof of the engineering building on campus and could see it lighting up buildings in downtown Pasadena, CA, three miles away. It was visible over all of the light from all of the sources of a brightly lit up downtown area. My friend went with another friend on a car rally and had the second fellow hold the light on his lap. He later said he was really tempted to have the second fellow shine it down the road at the people who refused to dim their lights. [MBZ] Fuel delivery valve job
The indy scared me about this job. He said it is too delicate for him to do, but I suspect it is more that Gump is a heap and he is not interested in keeping her on the road. He agreed to do the job anyway. I have done enough of these sorts of simple jobs that end up screwing the car up. Figured it would just save us all headache to have a pro do it, since the past few times under the hood, I ended up having a shop defornicate the mess I made. clay ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] Fitting a 240D W123 engine in to W115
Peter, I did not make that transplant, but I did make a 616 transplant in place of an OM621. The block castings have some major differences. I suspect the oil filter mount in the 615 is the same as the 621. What I had to do was to make a plate for the block, and a plate for the oil filter assembly, then connect them via 3 hoses. Another big difference: 621 and 615 crank and flywheel are balanced as unit. 616 is balanced separately. Transmissions do NOT bolt up. I had to use the 621 back plate, use the 621 flywheel and grind off MAJOR amounts of iron to get it to balance. (621 and 615 flywheels have a counterweight cast in) The other major problem was that one side of the motor mount bolts in the block was offset by about 3 inches. I won't say it can't be done, but it IS a MAJOR project. It is likely easier/cheaper to rebuild the 615 engine. Other problems might include the intake manifold/aircleaner and throttle linkage. If you want, I know where there is a low hour OM615 engine for sale, but it is in the US. If your friend is interested, contact me off-list. You have to make a pate for both the block and the oil filter housing, then you can moiunt the filter remote. It is never as good as having the right blok, because there is always a danger of the hose being worn through, caught , or leaking from age and causing a catastrophic failure. Kaleb C. Striplin wrote: The block is completely different, you cant mount the old filter on the But you should be able to cut the base off the new filter, adapt hose fittings to it, bolt it to the block, and run a remote filter somewhere Mitch. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
