Re: [MBZ] more 140 ignorance and hate

2010-12-18 Thread Walt Zarnoch
I don't think I perrsonally drove anyone away.

I rarely intervene in the general flow of the list, and what little I do say
is usualy looking for tidbits of information to help with my project, or a
reply to an off-topic discussion.

I guess I slipped up by giving an opinion about the double pane window
thing, but that is hardly a reason for anyone to fly off the handle.

I have no personal issue with anyone here, I understand we all have a
difference in opinion, and that is a good thing.

I just can't see why this is going on right now.

Re: [MBZ] RUF

2010-12-18 Thread E M
I'm not sure, as the AMG catalog I have was before AMG was absorbed by
Mercedes. As for the the body kits, there may be a few couple of places out
there that have copied the old AMG bits. I think Ronial make or made a rim
very similar to what was offered during the period by AMG. As for engine
bits, I have no idea, but there are probably much better options today for
such projects anyway. For what your dollar would buy you in NOS AMG parts,
or used bits, you could probably do an engine swap and end up with just as a
much, or more power, and replacement parts wouldn't be such a hassle
either. There is a guy on YouTube who has a W123 wagon, with a 560 engine
in it. Nicely done from the looks of it. I think I have the link somewhere
if interested in me posting it? If you can get your hands on an older
catalog by a company called (from memory, G&W), they offered all kind of
kits for a variety of cars in Germany. Not sure if any company still offers
bits for the W123, but at least an old catalog would give you some of the
names of companies that once did, so you could then take your search to eBay
and such places.

Original (pre mercedes) AMG parts are pretty much made of unobtainium now,
and priced accordingly. But things like old 560 engines are now plentiful,
and cheap, so these projects can happen, if you have the time to invest
yourself. If not, paying someone to do them can still run kind of high,
even if the parts can be had cheap.

I don't care to know the exact nature of what was going on when I first

I don't care who started it, or their reasons.

Are not we all above this? Does everything now devolve to people acting like

I joined this list to learn, not to get my inbox accosted with vitriolic
hate. One would think that people who take pride in owning or working on a
Benz would be better suited at turning the other cheek and acting congenial
to their fellow man, especially during this season.

Automotive development is good when it is taken one step after another

Yes I saw you where back and it seems back to your usual way of
expressing yourself.

I reckon I still have the right to express thoughts on this list or
perhaps you are now in charge and only mad rants, directed at whole
sections of list members, are allowed (ie. the haters and ignorant ones)
and the hating ignorant ones are especially going to feel the wrath of
Jabba the hutt and the ueber master of automotive knowledge, or has he
had his dummy spit, grabbed his bat and joined a more intelligent MB
forum, where they appreciate the 140 and it's gadgets and deride any MB
that cost less than 20K to buy.

Now perhaps you would be good enough to point out the rule that posts,
of a certain age, cannot be commented upon. The original post from the
master was on the 13th of December and unfortunately I have been busy,
thus unable to catch up on all the posts sent by the members.

There are lots of things wrong with me but I think the one you are
referring to is the one where I am not happy for a list member to call
the list (or some members thereof) ignorant because they declared the
140 to be a step back for Mercedes, or at the very least contain some
very expensive components that fail in a time frame not usual for a Benz
product.

Perhaps Jaime could get a job at Daimler as a customer liaison
executive, in charge of telling them that they are ignorant to be
unhappy that their MB is spending a lot of time in the workshop and the
reason the MB's of the mid 90's to late 00's are less reliable than the
cars they replaced is that this is how automotive development works. "We
tried to build a more sophisticated machine on a smaller budget and it
just didn't work out quite the way it was supposed to but that's OK with
us, we get to sell some very expensive bits to you ignorant fools."

That is another great thought from down under!I love the spirit
of OZ. It is so like what used to be called the American spirit!

One of the fatal signs of PD (programmers' disease) is the utter
inability of those infected to see how useless all the added feature
creep is. While PD used to be confined to very pale kids (20 to 30
years old) who live in their parents basement and only consume pizza
slid under the door and highly caffinated soda rolled under the door,
confirmed cases have been present in automotive and consumer

Personally, I consider my labelling by the High Master of Knowledge

Not sure if I should say anything, I may be accused of being

However being a daredevil I shall try and sneak some stupidity past
the overlord of automotive development information, guess if he

Re: [MBZ] Tire decision time: 195/65!

2010-12-18 Thread Hendrik & Fay
Too early to tell but it seems that with the correct size tire on my
300TE, the tires are not wearing on the insides as much as they did with
wrong size tires, which I think where 205/60. Which means they are wider
and thus not really suitable unless the front end is aligned.
Handling wise i would not know because I never take the car anywhere
near it's limit.
MB designed the suspension to be used with a certain size tire and I see
no reason to think that they do not know what they are doing, when it
comes to suspensions.

I wonder how much of that difference was due to the size (195/65 vs. 205/60)?
Seems intuitive that the 205/60 would have better grip dry than a 195/65, all
else being equal, but I suspect that there can be wide variation from batch to
batch of tires from the same maker. However, even though purchasing tires seems
like taking a chance no matter how much research one does, I'll bet the quality
across the board is far higher now that it was decades ago (similar to
improvements in motor oils).

Anyway I think the gripe the ignorant so and so's have is fair enough.
The issue being that there are a lot of MB only parts on that car that
fail eventually and trying to find a part out of a wreck is a lottery,
considering that the part may fail again.
Automotive development is good when it is taken one step after another
but the leap between the 126 and 140 was mighty and a bit too far. As a
side note the W220 also suffered from reliability problems due to more
leaping.
Technology is great when it works but when it doesn't and costs a
fortune to fix it is a pain.
I have heard stories of cars being wrecked because the accident damaged
electrical equipment that is too expensive too replace, or damaged
electrical lines which in turn damaged the various computers that are in
a car.

[MBZ] Thank Our Soldiers at Christmas

2010-12-18 Thread l02turner
Please consider the following:

Thanks!

Subject: Fw: Xerox is doing it again this year.

Send a thank you card to the troops!!!
  ---

XEROX IS DOING SOMETHING COOL (hit Control and Click the link)

If you go to this web site, www.LetsSayThanks.com you can pick out a thank
you card and Xerox will print it and it will be sent to a soldier that is
currently serving in Iraq . You can't pick out who gets it, but it will go to a
member of the armed services.

How AMAZING it would be if we could get everyone we know to send one!!!It
is FREE and it only takes a second.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if the soldiers received a bunch of these?Whether
you are for or against the war, our soldiers over there need to know we are
behind them.

This takes just 10 seconds and it's a wonderful way to say thank you. Please
take the time and please take the time to pass it on for others to do. We can
never say enough thank you's.

Thanks for taking to time to support our military!

   Mercedes 1979 300TD

Date: 2010-12-16, 5:31PM

This car is a classic Mercedes 300TD with a diesel engine and can be ran
off of vegetable oil!
It has all the original paperwork for anything that has ever been done
to it; really taken care of!!
I moved out of the country for a year and it sat at my parents house. It
started right up and I replaced the alternator, back tires, battery,
oil, and fuel filters. As the diesel filtered through the lines some
sludge from it sitting has clogged the tank and I don't have the time or
knowledge to clean it out. I am getting a new car from a relative and
would like to sell this car as fast as possible. Great project &
everything is original in the car except the radio!! Seats are in
excellent condition , but there is no carpet.

FOR QUESTIONS PLEASE CALL ANYTIME 904 753 0924
I am asking $900.00 and I am also open to any offers!!

It ain't gonna happen, and you *will* make yourself a mental case if
you keep dreaming like this. Admit it - you are an old man now, and
you will never grab that 5' torque wrench ever again. That is

I found Top Gear on Netflix and watched a couple of episodes (season 12,
looks like 13 is not on streaming yet) last night. They can say some
dirty words on Brit TV that they can't say here, and make allusions to
things verboten. Quite entertaining.

I watched them on the laptop, gotta get one of those boxes you can hook

I'm having both the motor mounts and the sun shade motor replaced under my

2010-12-18 Thread Lwb250
Brian,

Your are reaching a point in your life where priorities are changing - no need
to apologize.

I had a similar epiphany about 6 years ago when I returned to school to
complete my second degree. The reality of the situation was such that I simply
did not have the time or resources to continue tinkering with my MBs.

While I don't regret the change, I do appreciate not being a slave to a car or
cars that need regular maintenance and repairs. I did enjoy my cars and working
on them, it's just that the situation forced a change in priorities, just as
yours is.

The day will probably come when I return to the fold, so to speak. My only
regret is the the Finny or long wheelbase 126 that I have always desired will
be that more difficult to find

Jim, all,

Thanks for the encouraging words. I haven't checked back since I sent my
post. Busy time.

But I'd like to make more clear the reason I would entertain selling the
240.

It's most definitely not that I think that we need more room. My wife and I
have long scoffed at the notion that folks have to run out and buy a minivan
or suv when they have a kid.

The reason is that I have shown myself that I don't make time to work on
cars. That's why my '68 Coronet is in the care of my brother in AZ. He loves
to work on cars. Since the clutch acted up on the 240, it has sat in the
garage. Weekends are full of house and yard projects and relaxation.

And with the child coming, I figured I may struggle to make time for my
beloved Doberman, much less working on a car.

Don't worry, my dog will continue to get exercise, love and stimulation.

And after getting back on the list, I feel some encouragement to get out
there and try to diagnose the 240's problem. Maybe.

Thanks,
Brian

Re: [MBZ] very very preliminary feeler: anyone wish to buy my 83 240D?

2010-12-18 Thread Zoltan Finks

Maybe.

Thanks,
Brian
