BTDT with two cars, one with a PO who was Rain-X-happy (I know because
he told me) and one with a new car that had been sprayed all over by
the stealer's minions with something wax-oid.In both cases lacquer
thinner took it off nicely with no apparent damage to the glass---I

[MBZ] Rear links, phase II

2011-02-21 Thread Peter Frederick
Finally go the three links replaced on the right side of the 300D
tonight. Much nicer when it's above freezing in the garage, eh?

Drives much better, but the creaking and groaning is still there --
separated subframe mounts that I'll have to deal with sometime when I
have a long weekend. I've got them, just have to get the car up on
stands and lower the subframe and pull them out. Should make for a
better ride, too!

It does drive straight now, no wander and doesn't seem to want to
drift around like it did. Links are in pretty bad shape, rubber is
all crunchy.

Since I just bought a bee hive kit and a new vacuum (to me, it's a
used Filter Queen) I'll not be buying stuff for the car until May or
June, when I intend to do the evaporator and revive the AC.

Beware the non-running car!

My '95 E300 looked great, and it even ran (very poorly). It had some

needs more).

I posted about this a while ago, a guy I know asked if I wanted to buy
his 300SD and that it needed "a new crankshaft." The problem is the
balancer had come loose and when he took it to the the shop that's what
they told him.

I stopped by the car today, still sitting at the shop where it's been
all winter. Nobody was around and it was unlocked so I popped the hood
(something I could not do last time I was there as there was 6" of snow
on it).

The balancer and pullys have been removed. The balancer is sitting on
the passenger floorboard. The rest of the parts are under the hood.
What I can see of the crank does not look damaged or chewed up.

Cooling system has green coolant in it, but it does look reasonably
fresh. Oil dipstick is missing. Transmission fluid looks overfilled
but clean (do they read overfull when not running?)

He claims it runs, and has had recent brakes and front-end work. Body
is really good, no rust that I can see anywhere. Needs a good wash and
wax from sitting all winter. Interior needs a good detailing and new
seat covers on the front seats. Headlight surrounds are cracked and
some pieces missing.

Thought I might offer him the standard Kaleb price.

You have to apply it per the directions, and do so exactly as described. Two

You need some warm water to force the freon in -- partially immerse
the can, it will boil and the gas will then go into the system.

You have a frozen evaporator from low freon, that's why the pressure
is so low on the low side (expansion valve is completely closed).
You may also have water freezing out at the expansion valve, blocking
it.

More to the point, you need to find and fix the leak -- if the freon
is slowly leaking out, air and water are leaking in. Heat, water,
oxygen, and R134a make hydrofluoric acid, which will very rapidly eat
the compressor.

If the can has frost on it, it won't be able to supply freon to a system
that's
programmed NOT to frost the evaporator side of the system. Either wait for
the
can to warm up, or stick it in a bucket of warm water.

I guess I'll just present the bill to Wilton!

I've tried Rain-X, and found it to work quite well for me. Used it on my
old '85 300TD and on SWMBO's car. It is rather a pain to apply, so once my
bottle was empty I decided to forgo the product as I didn't really want to
spend the time applying it.

More than anything else it will ruin your visibility in rain, it will
smear something horrible as the wax starts to wear. Won't
do the wiper blades any good, either, and it's impossible to get
the wax off them, you will need to replace them.

Peter, who has a very smeary windshield thanks to the PO and rain-x.

I have used Rain-X since it first came out and was sold through dealers, a la
Amsoil.

You have to apply it per the directions, and do so exactly as described. Two
coats to assure proper coverage, and a good buffing afterwards with a lightly
dampened cloth.

I use it regularly, and have done so for many years. The only complaint I have
is at low speeds in light rain, when there isn't enough air velocity to move
the water off the glass.

Re: [MBZ] 124 AC woe

2011-02-21 Thread Peter Frederick
You need some warm water to force the freon in -- partially immerse
the can, it will boil and the gas will then go into the system.

You have a frozen evaporator from low freon, that's why the pressure
is so low on the low side (expansion valve is completely closed).
You may also have water freezing out at the expansion valve, blocking
it.

More to the point, you need to find and fix the leak -- if the freon
is slowly leaking out, air and water are leaking in. Heat, water,
oxygen, and R134a make hydrofluoric acid, which will very rapidly eat
the compressor.

[MBZ] 124 AC woe

2011-02-21 Thread Max Dillon
After washing and waxing the E300, I decided to see if the r134 needed a
re-charge, as the AC will work well for about 10 minutes and then lose
effectiveness. I'd noticed last summer that there was very little fluid
visible in the sight glass.

I drove around until the AC got weak, and then the gauge only showed 90 psi
on the high pressure side. Low pressure side shows a vacuum (can't tell how
much due to cheap gauge). I tried to add r134 with UV dye on the low
pressure side, but it won't take very much and the high pressure side
doesn't change. This doesn't make sense to me - I must be doing something
wrong. When I connect the low pressure hose with the can of r134, I crack
the valve on the can tap to fill the line and get the air out, and I can
hear the gas coming out, so I'm pretty sure the valve is working. When the
can is connected and the tap open, the can covers with frost, so some of it
is getting into the system, but the can still has a lot of liquid in the
bottom.

Anyone have any advice? Do I simply need to be more patient about letting
the r134 bleed into the system?

The headroom (ideally 13-16') is the part that doesn't come cheap.
I'm thinking that if the basement floor is 4' below the garage floor, and the
first story floor is 5' above the garage floor, then a 13' garage ceiling would
be level with a 8' first story ceiling, and you could build a 2nd story straight
across both the garage and the first story. Then the hoist height garage would
be pretty cheap.

I got it solved with a work around. i opened the ppt in winders and

Then I went bac to mac and opened the sound files I wanted to edit in

Still don't know how to find the sound files in OSX.

Interestingly, when I load the htm, the sound plays. I can't
figure out where the sound lives.

If the htm plays the sound, then there is a link to the sound in
the page. Maybe by looking at the page source you can figure
out where the link points and snag the audio.

So... I finally "finished" the SDL's oil pan, after the poor thing
sitting all winter today was a nice shiny day - high of 73 - so I was
able to put the new pan on.

As I was taking my last pass around the bolts to make sure everything
was tight, I broke the head off one of the bolts into the block, way
up on the long side of the pan. Then I continued around and did it
again, on the opposite corner (at least it's near the front where I
can reach it)! So... guess I had some weakened bolts, or else my
torque wrench isn't what it used to be. What's a good way to get the
remainder of the bolts out? I need something that can reach about 8
inches up, for the one. These are fairly small bolts (10mm head), I
assume normal steel.

Since I don't have it quite right, I can't, you know, get the
satisfaction of driving the car... but at least I think the big part
is done. :) Thanks for the tips whenever it was that I actually broke
the thing; it turns out the pan had cracked almost in half before, and
been JB Welded back together, so I am glad in retrospect that I did
the right thing and replaced it.

A few notes for future folks doing the job:
 - You can avoid taking off the steering linkage in the 126, but it
takes some wiggling to get the pan off. [You will see, the shock is an
inch or two higher than the cross-member; that was the hangup.] If you
want to leave the suspension intact, you will have to raise the engine
higher than the engine shocks will allow while connected, I just let
them dangle and then guided them into the holes while lowering the
engine. All told I think that was easier than moving the linkage and
leaving the shocks connected, but it is a personal preference. :)

 - I will never again use gasket sealant when I can avoid it. It took
three days (okay, maybe 6 or 8 hours of actual work) to get the old
seal off my "new" part.

 - I think it would take me about 4-6 hours to do it again, if I had
all the time at once. As it was, I took two one-hour blocks to get
tools etc. ready and do a little exploratory work, five hours getting
the original pan out, and four more putting it back in, not counting
seal removal from the new pan. All of these included tool get-out and
put-up time. I am also, as you may guess, fairly slow, and then there
is the whole "haven't looked at the car in a month" effect between
iterations, so YMMV.

 - You might want to be a little cautious in tightening the bolts!

Thanks,
-Tim

all the time at once.

Thanks,
-Tim

If it works like Rain-X, it'll be fine until you drive under a street light.

We're enjoying some very nice weather, about 75 with a nice breeze and
sun,
so time to get outside. Washed and waxed Blue (the '95), and decided to
try

out Wilton's trick of waxing the windows along with the rest of the car.
The windshield, which is new, really seemed to absorb the wax (didn't haze
that much with just one coat), but the side and rear windows hazed over
nicely. I'm sure the rain performance will be improved, but I'd like to
wait at least a week or two before I find out!

If the htm plays the sound, then there is a link to the sound in
the page. Maybe by looking at the page source you can figure
out where the link points and snag the audio.

They may be interchangeable - but I would expect the belt to be

there isn't a whole lot of point in having it EXCEPT, I've seen lots of

Specifically we had a system certified for video editing years ago that

[MBZ] This is kinda fun *****WARNING: NOT MB CAR CONTENT ****

2011-02-21 Thread Rich Thomas

Car assembles itself, owner and dog watch

Car enthusiast Michael Bakiewicz put
together this time lapse movie of his Suzuki car putting itself
together. At least that's what it looks like-- in reality, the short
documents nine months of car building, starting with a bare chassis and
ending with an almost working vehicle. It's a great look at how much
effort goes into putting a car together. [via Neatorama

Re: [MBZ] W123 engine parts

2011-02-21 Thread Dieselhead
As long as you get the block mount and the tensioner mount, any
diesel, OM621, OM615, OM616, OM617, will mount any alternator or
generator from any other engine. My son's 110 200D 2.4 has an 81
OM616 engine with the alt and mounts from a 116 but I forget the
engine type. Probably a 450 gasser. The gas engines from the same
time 60s through 80s also had the same mounting dimensions on the
block. So essentially you can snag an alternator and mounts from
any 123. On my 200D, back in the 70s when I got it, the alt was near
unobtanium, so I mounted the generator and reg from a 190c. Some
year, I will likely swap it back to an 80s vintage alternator.

I am not sure about aluminum head diesels and newer gassers. I
suspect the OM601-2-3 have the same mounts to the block.

My '78 and '83 240Ds have different mounts. The '83 has a bolt
tensioner thing while the '78 has an eccentric. I don't know if the
'78 mount would go on the '83, I suspect it would.

you can use PowerPoint or Open Office to extract the Audio from a PPS

I am becoming a raving fan of audacity. Here is the question. Is it
possible to import the narrated sound from a ppt slideshow into
Audacity to edit it? If so, how do you do that? I have tried to
drag the speaker symbol in the ppt slide to the Audacity window with
no result.

There does not seem to be any way to save, move or edit the ppt audio.

I had not thought of that, but if it is trying to read the entire document
each time it would indeed take awhile. It actually works too quickly once
it's running to be able to do that, but perhaps that is part of the problem
when I wake it up after a brief pause. I'm still having a bit of an issue
with that, but it is much faster and less of a problem after having made the
adjustments suggested by the group. Dragon NaturallySpeaking is typing this
for me without a problem, and I have two open files in Word also (the full
180 page manuscript and a page of notes).

Glancing over the tools menu and the options menu I think the programs
reading of my writing is only done on command, then word patterns are
matched to previous writings. At any rate, I think the bulk of my problem
is greatly eased and now something I can live with. Wish I could get my
300SD in as good a shape, though really I have no complaints about the old
girl.

As someone pointed out, a huge Word document will slow the system down as
well. If that's a possible issue, dictate to new, small docs, then merge or
copy the text to the master document after the dictation session. Dragon
will "read" a document, looking for word patterns to understand your speach
better - maybe it's reading the entire doc every time you dictate now? I
don't understand the detailed workings of that feature yet.

Re: [MBZ] W123 engine parts

2011-02-21 Thread Curt Raymond
My '78 and '83 240Ds have different mounts. The '83 has a bolt tensioner thing
while the '78 has an eccentric. I don't know if the '78 mount would go on the
'83, I suspect it would.

I am working on 83 240D.
Does anyone know if there is a difference in alternator mount and
bracket between 83 and 77?
Dieselhead is going to check his stash of W123 stuff to see if he has
bracket and mount.
Also, does anyone know? - is there difference between 240D & 300D
alternator mounting and bracket?
Thanks.

Bill,
That is almost as esoteric as maintaining a Mercedes diesel.

Re: [MBZ] Starting an old 300CD

2011-02-21 Thread Max Dillon
Replying to an old thread, but here's my take.

He's got fuel (garage full of vaporized diesel) and he's got glow. I think
you are spot-on with checking the valve adjustment to ensure the maximum of
the last required element for a compression-ignition engine.

Pull start procedure is in the owner's manual for automatic transmission
cars.

Subject: [MBZ] Starting an old 300CD

My brother in Seattle is trying to get his '81 300CD started after it has
sat for a couple of years. He says the engine is tired so it doesn't have
a whole lot of compression.

He called with his cell phone, having removed the glow plugs, cranked
it over to make sure there was nothing liquid in the cylinders, and put
the glow plugs back in. He did say that his wife once cranked the engine
with the plug out before he had a chance to push the stop lever and that
the garage was filled with vaporized diesel fuel.

I told him that he should check out the glow plugs by removing them and,
holding them with vise-grips, jumper them across the battery. He admitted
how he didn't want to take them back out since his hands had gotten
chewed up with the removal and reinstallation he had already done.

So, I told him to get a 30 A ammeter, connect the positive terminal of
the meter to the battery's positive terminal and the negative to each pin
of the glow plug harness plug in turn and see if the current doesn't
start out around 20 A and then drop some after a few seconds. He called
back saying he used the 100 A meter he got while he was working at
Kenworth and had seen behavior I had described.

At my instruction, he glowed the engine for a full cycle of the relay,
turned the all the way off and immediately back on, and let it glow
until the dash glow plug light went out, and then tried starting it. He
said it did not try to fire and did not put out any black smoke, but did
get a lot of oil pressure.

He was going to give up for awhile to let his charger recharge the
battery, which he also thinks is a little tired.

So what should he try next?

I'm thinking he might want to check the valve clearance. I recall asking
him a couple of weeks ago if he pumped the priming pump, but it might be
worthwhile to do that again.

He did say the diesel was a couple of years old. Would that make a
difference?

Can an automatic transmission car be push (pull) started?
