Re: [MBZ] half of this car is not like the other....

2011-06-13 Thread Kevin Kraly
A car can be perfectly fine after an accident with the replacement of only
front sheet metal. For a few years during the early 80's, our car was a
1972 Pinto Station Wagon. Dad picked it up for $200 since it had been hit
head-on. Within a weekend, he installed a new radiator and a front clip off
a 1974 Pinto, and though it was a different color, it was rock solid. It
never left us stranded, and he still made a profit on it 4 years later! It
had the 2000CC OHC engine with an automatic transmission, slow but
determined!

Failure to follow the prescribed maintenance and use the prescribed juices.

in plain speak: Green antifriz and not changing it out frequently.

Dieselvolk,

Today my new-to-me OM603 head arrived (#17), so I spent some time inspecting
it and getting it ready for the shop to re-do the valve seals.

The only thing I see that I don't really like is some pitting in five places
on the mating surface, between all the oil and water passages and not near
anything really. Pictures to follow.

Anyone have an opinion on pitting in areas where it doesn't seem to be near
anything?

I've had Safeco for 15 years or so now. The only claim I've had to
make was 10 years ago and involved fairly serious front-end work to
the diesel 2001 VW bug that I had then. I was pleasantly surprised
that they made absolutely no fuss about my choice of body shop and
guaranteed in writing that only factory parts would be used. They
paid the entire cost of repair less deductible, and when the body work
ran overtime they even paid for a rental car for several days beyond
the maximum time specified in the policy for rental reimbursement.

Not necessarily. If the impact was bad enough to mess up the whole

would expect to see more issues with the door alignment wouldn't

Any wheels that will fit a 124 or 201 have the right offset for a
Vanagon, but you have to drill out the bolt holes and maybe the center
as well. I've seen on VW forums where people have mounted bundts or
other 126/123/107 wheels with spacers, which seems silly when there
are plenty of options with the correct offset (not just from Mercedes,
but also IIRC there are a bunch of Audi options as well).

When I win the lottery I'm getting a Westy with a blown engine,
converting it to a Subaru turbo engine and auto trans, and putting on
it either the CLK or 500E wheels that I have squirreled away. I
haven't really looked, but I bet it's a lot easier to find 16" tires
suitable for a Vanagon these days than 14s. A lot of people put
passenger car (P) tires on them, but I believe under the current size
code system they are much better off with LT tires (higher load
rating, stiffer sidewalls).

I don't think the 250D NA had the right fender air intake. I know the 200D (now

It's a 90-93 2.5 turbo (124.128), pretty much the same engine as the 1987 190D

2011-06-13 Thread Walt Zarnoch
On a York, the only wire coming from the compressor gets 12V to engage
the clutch.
Make sure it's going/coming from the compressor before feeding it with
a jumper wire though, don't want to fry something inadvertently.

According to the Bosch Wiring Standard, Brown with a trace generally
goes to a ground through some device. My guess is that if you ground

 '78 240D, York AC compressor.

Car's AC doesn't do anything, compressor doesn't engage,
nothing. So poking around I found this mystery wire by the
compressor, its brown with blue, in the same harness as the
blue/white from the pressure switch to the compressor.
Wiring diagram seems to indicate it comes from the dash
switch to a relay but I can't see any relay in this area nor
can I see anything reasonable to attach it to.

 Ideas?

I think you probably need to do the same thing I need to do which is find an
independent insurance agent. I suspect I'm paying too much for everything.

That said on each of the MB's I'm paying about $350/year for liability only.
The pickup is more but it has comprehensive. Motorcycles are slightly less each

I'm getting ready to put my 88 Ram50 on the road, and the first thing needed
is insurance... I'm in NY, so not sure how this varies state to state.

Just wondering who I should check for a low rate for a first time insured,
"new driver" (had my permit forever though...), with an old-tush truck...

Geico says $514 for 6 months, $422 for Progresssive (heard some stuff on the
list about them... and from a few friends...).

Going to be talking with my parents insurance co as well.

Ideas? Thoughts? Gotcha's?

Benz content:
Still plodding away with the other truck that has the 617, getting the new
oil pump rear housing finished this week if all goes well.
Gotta tack the motor mounts in and then it's time to work on the sheet metal
sump.

Fun stuff...
