Re: [MBZ] Heating
Lake effect snow is usually limited to a band maybe 20-30 miles from the shore, although in some areas a combination of topography and winds can take it farther. We lived on the shores of Lake Michigan for six years, and rarely saw it, mainly because we were on the western shore and the prevailing winds were west to east. However, the effect of the large body of water on our weather was still noticeable, as the lake temperature tempered our ambient. Listening to the weather the phrase, Cooler by the lake was quite common. That being said, it did work to our advantage most of the time. It kept things cool in the summer, and also reduced the effects of snowfall by a factor of as much as 50% or more compared with 5-10 miles inland. We didn't install AC in the house until about three years after we moved in, as it was rarely needed because of the lake breezes. The only negative I can recall was it taking a lot longer to warm up in the summer, as it could easily be in the 80s inland but only 60 at our house. Yes, I think those are the ones I looked at. The only problem with them is that for the size I need it would not split to enough cooling points inside. If I remember two smaller units would also not split enough, can't really remember now. Then there was also the problem that I did want to use geothermal cooling which was and as far as I know still is not available in those type of units. The other down side of those units is they pump freon around rather then chilled water. With the water units the individual cooling units can be over-sized due to the self throttling of the water flow. That way a smaller chiller can be used since not all the units will be going full out at any one time and probably not at any time due to the shape of and insulation in my house (dome). In the winter any heating needed can also be done using the same system. It would also be a lot easier to make changes in the system to see what might be a better location of cooling units. I am going to put a mini-split heat pump system in my addition, 4 9+9+12+12 kBTU head units, the outside unit is 36k and it can throttle down pretty low. I gotta order the lines and cabling soon to get it in the walls. My calculations show the whole thing needing only 18k to heat/cool it, so this should be enough to add a bit to the rest of the house when it is cranking. These things are pretty efficient and easy to install in new work, and even in existing houses if you can easily route the lines from outside or a basement or something. --R On 12/4/11 11:27 AM, MG wrote: Yes, I think those are the ones I looked at. Re: [MBZ] OT Anti-Virus for Android
I have a different perspective. I believe that anything on a machine connected to the internet is not secure, and therefore, the only thing that should be on your internet connected device, (firewalls notwithstanding) should only be information that you have no objection if it was broadcast in print, over the air by radio or tv, by town crier or other form of communication. As was previously mentioned, Android is open for anyone to write malware. The malware for smartphones is in its infancy, so be prepared for increasing attacks. Mac is less attacked because it represents a less lucrative target. Android is the fastest growing target. Not a place where I'd want to be. I do not, and will not conduct banking type transactions over the internet. In spite of the precautions taken banking/investment is a juicy target to malware. It is well known that email is insecure, and therefore should contain only information that can be broadcast to the world. I extend that to all internet connected devices. A hacker can gain access to any target if they want in badly enough. Almost everyone else will say your odds of being attacked are slim. They might be now, but Androids will be attacked. They already have been attacked by mal-applications. Anyone? Mike On Dec 3, 2011 5:35 PM, Michael Canfield slozuk...@gmail.com wrote: I am no computer genius so I have no real clue here. Re: [MBZ] OT Anti-Virus for Android
Android has more malware than IOS (iPhone/iPad) apps because it is more open. Apple curates the apps that can be sold in the App Store and if they don't follow Apple's programming standards they are not allowed. I would assume this includes a check for any kind of malicious activity, but that sort of thing can be hidden pretty well by a smart programmer. I imagine we will see malware on IOS eventually. That said, if you only use mainstream apps from well-known publishers, you are going to be safer than if you download every ooohh, that's cool game that catches your eye. A 400 amp service was/is the trendy thing in mcMansions. they get lots of breaker spaces for all the circuits that are supposed to be on a dedicated circuit. Stove, dryer, MW, DW, A/C 1, A/c2, A/C 3, entertainment center 1, 2 and 3. swimming pool equipment, hot tub, water heaters 1, 2 and 3, Garage door openers 1,2 and 3, then add on whatever is the latest thing. I count 29 breaker spaces just for the stuff I mentioned. Then there are lights and outlets. I wonder what the service entrances look like in albore's mansion. at 20,000 dollars a month, that is a lot of amps. Teflon tape should NOT be used in hydraulic systems. The seal effect relys on the cone shape of the tip and the area it sets in.. NOT the threads. More importantly, anti-seize compounds use materials that make a barrier against the thread and the body doing a rust weld and becoming one solid piece. Teflon does not do that, and in fact is not a very tough material.. ie. a teflon coated cooking pan must always use plastic food turners and such to keep from scratching through the surface. Re: [MBZ] Frankenheap brake hose/ anti-seize on brake bleeders
They are made of steel but being hollow except for the conical seating surface at the base, they don't tolerate a lot of torque. They simply shear. This has happened to be at least three times and is a major pita. The last time it happened was on my pagoda. I couldn't get a replacement caliper soon enough for a pagoda gathering I organized so I drilled it out. I damaged the caliper threads a bit but it all came out leaving the conical seating surface unscathed. While bleeding some brake fluid would leak past the damaged threads but once tightened it formed an airtight leak free seal. I really don't care to have to deal with this problem again! Yup. That's what I remember. I was thinking that because of the size of the rooms and open areas I would need to get two of those units and then I would be at 3 tons over the amount of cooling needed. If there was one unit that could split into 8 that would work but still don't like the freon circulation. My calculations show the whole thing needing only 18k to heat/cool it, so this should be enough to add a bit to the rest of the house when it is cranking. Re: [MBZ] CL idiot of the day
I think ebonics is actually derived from Gullah, which was slave english (actually a hodgepodge of various languages/pronunciations, including African and European). Most of my neighbors are Gullah, and speak Gullah, which sounds a lot like Jamaican English when they get going, but also seems to be the root of the ebonics that is prevalent all over the country. I'm guessing it all started with the slaves here, who were the first to be brought to the US, from Barbados initially then Africa directly, and sorta spread with subsequent arrivees and the diaspora. I am told it sorta developed as a general language everyone could communicate in using various bits of their own original languages. This is all conjecture, not being a linguist, but being here in the midst of the mother tongue it sure seems like it. I don't think the CL idiot was communicating in ebonics, he was probably just a dumbass. --R On 12/4/11 6:50 PM, Dieselhead wrote: Spelling is now an elective class, with Ebonics being one of the accepted word forms. Haylon. We still have a system like that at work for some reason (the current excuse is that there is an I/O board in there for a current loop system) left over from the days when a VAX lived in there. We are required to evacuate the building if it ever goes off, Halon is a chloro-fluorcarbon of some sort, and once you breath it in, it's very difficult to get it back out of your lungs -- very dense. NASCAR and Indycar racing had a couple fatalities with it in the 60's or early 70's and quit using it in race cars -- tended to extinguish the driver along with a fire. Pretty funny that most smartphones have an order of magnitude better processor performance than a DEC VAX.
