Re: [MBZ] vintage precision scale

2014-09-04 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
The model I have is the one that was recommended by America's Test Kitchen
(Cooks' Illustrated), but I believe they had just shifted production to China.
The build quality seems very good and it has lasted for years with frequent
use. Some Chinese made products have excellent quality control, such as the
ThinkPad I'm typing on now. Others...not so much.

This is why I started this thread. Someplace online talked about vintage

these vintage scales and capacitor failure?
Thanks.

[MBZ] Off Topic - Reliable electric dimmer switch

2014-09-04 Thread Mike Esh via Mercedes
Does anyone have a source for a a good, long lasting, and reliable dimmer switch for my kitchen and bathroom lights. The kitchen needs to run 7 can light lights and the bathroom has twelve 40 watt globe lights. I have replaced both of them twice over the past couple of years because they begin buzzing, become erratic and and eventually not working at all.

In addition, can anyone make a recommendation on the type of light to use in my
kithscn that is long lasting, economical and delivers a nice quality light that
is not to harsh? Does anyone know of a website that could help? I currently
have a variety of incandescent, florescent and LED's.

Thanks,

Nope.

Busy week.

Spent Tuesday and first half of Wednesday traveling to get a new (to me) 1998
S420 home. Spent this morning doing the Martha treatment and getting a parts
list together.

Just finished up working on the eldest's 300E 2.6 and the top timing cover
leak. Looks like the gasket is good - found a loose bolt on the cover. Got it
torqued down and everything back in place. Will monitor it for any future
leaking, but don't expect it.

Getting cooled down and going to jump in the shower, get an hour of piano
practice in before I go to my lesson at 4:30, then back to the ranch for the
evening duties.

Tomorrow is get everything ready for the father in law's memorial service and
wake on Saturday. Saturday will be taken up with memorial and wake (ugh, I
hate these sorts of things!)

Sunday morning will be spent pulling the passenger side valve cover on the
SL500 to determine what the nasty ticking noise is that just started this
morning. I'm sure it's mad because there's a new MB in the driveway, despite
my assurances that it's not being replaced. The oiler tubes have been replaced
with the cast aluminum ones, so other than the little ball bearing in the
machining hole of the oiler tube having come out, I can't imagine why there's
lifter ticking.

Carry on.

Dan

No need for that. The memorial service is at the funeral home, replete with

Immediately following will be the wake at the Moose Lodge. I fully expect
local law enforcement to be on hand before the evening is over. That's the

[MBZ] 124 AC repair

2014-09-04 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Finally have my '95 E300 Diesel AC working reliably. My first problem
(belt slipping) was finally corrected when I broke out the FSM section 83
(HVAC repair) and noticed in one of the pictures how the serpentine belt is
supposed to be routed...ooops... I had figured out possibly the only way to
install the belt wrong, glad I finally figured that out!

During a long highway drive a couple weeks ago, the AC compressor was still
cutting in/out. I noticed that sometimes the compressor would engage when
I went over a bump. Surmising that I might have a loose connection
somewhere, I tested the theory by hitting the rumble strip when the
compressor was refusing to engage, and sho' enough it usually would
engage. At a convenient stop I popped the hood and pulled off the cover
behind the battery, which protects the KLIMA relay. Moving the relay
slightly would cause the compressor clutch to engage, so I jammed an empty
crushed water-bottle between relay and battery, and that has restored
normal AC function ever since. I do need to find time to pull that relay
and find the loose connection.

[MBZ] White Whale update

2014-09-04 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I've begun installing a #17 head on my '87 wagon. Attached the exhaust
manifold (new copper nuts), placed the head onto the block (new MB head
gasket, made by Elring) and bolted it down.

I did re-use the head bolts, after measuring each one to make sure they
were within the FSM specified tolerance.

The head bolt tightening sequence calls for bolts to be tightened in
specified pattern in four steps: 25 Nm, 40 Nm, [ten minute rest], 90 degree
turn, 90 degree turn.

I attached a pointer to the special tool bit for the head bolts, and used
any of the numerous straight lines on the top of the head to measure 90
degree turns. The pointer was simply a short piece of stiff small gauge
wire, about two inches long, held to the tool shaft with a small hose
clamp. When I inserted the tool into each bolt, I would bend the pointer
slightly to calibrate it to whichever reference line was handy. This
worked really well for me.

The last thing I've accomplished is bleeding all the hydraulic lifters to
make sure none are too thick and will hold valves open. I wonder how much
noise all these flat lifters will make during the initial engine start.
I'll bet that all the engine cranking required to get the fuel system bled
will also pump up the lifters, at least partially, so maybe it won't be too
noticeable.

Injectors: This head has pre-chambers which require the later style
inclined injectors (NA35X). I exchanged a set of used NA36X injectors,
which I no longer need as they fit the original head, with Tim Crone. Tim
took them from Wilton's dead 126 engine. I sent the new injectors to a
gentlemen in Columbia SC, Mark Blevins, who advertises injector
rebuild/balance service on Peach Parts. He found that 2 of the six have
cracked bodies, and cannot be re-used, so now I'm looking for a few more
used injectors, if anyone has some they are willing to part with.

ugly. That's when I usually have to mediate.

In this situation she's convinced there's money and she'll want to know where
her share is. What she simply can't understand is that the in laws were on a
fixed income and had no stash of cash laying around. Not to mention if she
smells money she'll have absolutely no grasp of the term joint tenancy, meaning
she thinks there should be money for her and my mother in law be damned.

After that she'll want her son and his good for nothing wife (they are both

we paid for.

I'll have to intervene there, too.

[MBZ] New Ride

2014-09-04 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Added to the stable this week. 1998 S420, champagne, palomino leather, 264k.
Just gave it the partial Martha treatment as time is limited right now. Wash,
clay bar, waxed yesterday afternoon. Detailed the engine compartment this
morning and applied MB weatherstripping lube to all of the seals.

Dang, I love W140s. And wouldn't you know, I go to move the SL500 out of the
garage this morning and I have a rather nasty tapping sound coming from the
right side of the engine. I would suspect cam oiler tubes, but I replaced them
a number of months back with the factory cast aluminum ones. I think the car
is miffed because there's someone new in town

You betcha.

One note of warning to all:

DO NOT USE CLEANERS WITH SILICONE IN OR AROUND THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT!

Silicone will damage the sensing components in the MAF on these cars.

Everything you see in that engine compartment that was plastic was cleaned with
nothing more than soap and water, dried off, then wiped down with 303
Protectant.

It's funny, but when driving home from my piano lesson today, it seemed like
every other car on the road was a similar color

[MBZ] Testing Prius

2014-09-04 Thread Archer75--- via Mercedes
Rented a Prius for 24 hours yesterday since I'd never driven one.
Handling was very good, engine very quiet, 49 mpg for mixed road and
city driving. Instrumentation and controls were straightforward and
visibility was remarkable; rear view mirrors were surprisingly
effective. Combined with its excellent repair record during the first 8
or 10 years, it would be a good investment.

That said, I wouldn't buy one for one principal reason: It rides rough
and there seems to be little cushioning by the seat; you feel every
bump. My old Beetles rode better. A Mercedes seat would help but that
might be difficult or impossible to install.

My reasons for buying a new or late model car are exceptional fuel
economy and reliability on long trips; something the Prius would
satisfy; but being pounded on rough roads for hours at a time would be
unpleasant and tiring.
