He is also a true enthusiast, goes to MB events, and concours. I went to June

That is what I call a good relationship with a parts guy!

We used their 4U rackmount cases at the Lab. The folks on the project

I use their NSK-3480 case here at home. It's a mini-ATX tower with
a 380 W 80Plus rated power supply. We go for the low-power end of things,
so the power supply is way over-rated for the 46 - 50 W our two computers
draw from the wall outlet.

They have a lot of other choices of cases, too, in case your son is a

Yeah, I've never been crazy about this design - there are so many much
easier methods to adjust alts, Compressors, etc. Speaking of
compressors - I am considering removing this York - the AC has never
worked properly and removing it will provide more room to work in the
engine bay.

It's a 78 240D and it was in poor condition when I bought it. I rebuilt
the engine and it is running great but the tranny is starting to do
strange things and the rust is really taking over in the rockers.I
have considered sending it to the scrap yard but it starts every time i
ask it and it's nice to have it around when I don't want to drive the

What we oughta do is get Rich to make up some 14 ga steel strips with

Re: [MBZ] Alt up per bracket 78 240D

2015-01-19 Thread David Bruckmann via Mercedes
There's a reason they abandoned that design.

The bolt and the rack are vulnerable because many people don't understand that
you start by LOOSENING EVERYTHING before trying to adjust. That includes the
clamping bolt and the lower pivot bolt. Once the desired tension is achieved,
then tighten everything to hold it in place.

The toothed bolt isn't completely vital. You can wedge the alt for tension and
then clamp, but that's not quite as convenient as a functional rack and bolt.

You are indeed lucky to have a good stealer. They are few and far between.

The stealer here is such a crook I won't set foot inside. Its a 100
mile trip anyway.

The only dealerships I will deal with now are ones that advertise in
the star for a long time.

When H.K. had his dealership I (and many others) would drive a long
way to go there, but mostly I just bought parts from him over the
phone. H.K had a barn full of obsolete parts that he would let me
pick through, then buy stuff for pennies on the $. There used to be
a long time dealership in Pekin, Il and I used to mail order parts
from them. But they are long gone too.

Yup

On one of mine, the rack is chewed up and I adjust it with a breaker
bar behind the alt to tension the belt while I try to tighten
everything down. The rack and pinion adjuster is elegant, but too
many ham fisted clowns ruin them.

OCD kicked in and I wanted to open the door to ensure the cap was tight.
The door will not open now.
I took some of the trunk lining out and I can't even see where the actuator
is. It's all tucked up in behind the roof operator. I checked the fuse and
it's fine.
Does anyone have any experience messing with this thing?

[MBZ] Wilton Q

So, I was re-living some of my youth and watching old shows on youtube
last night.
I watched some of the Bob Hope USO tours including some from Viet Nam
and wondered if Wilton was in the crowd.

The reflectors look fine (though one is dirty and will need to be cleaned

Coukd you please send me some pics? Is the lens the clear glass part
or the reflector or some mysterious third component?

The lens is the clear glass part.

Do I need any extra voltage regulators or wiring?

No, though you do have to shuffle pins around in the connector which
connects to the headlights.

 Tanks,
 Karl

You are welcome. I'll send the pictures off-list.
