Just as an aside, were you using a proper tap wrench when this happened? I've
only broken one tap before and I was foolishly using an adjustable wrench
instead of a tap wrench when it happened.
Can you thread your helicoils onto the bolt with it outside of the engine?

yabbutt he has an SLS and you don't so who's the doucheboy?

I saw an AMG GT a month or two ago, was in front of me at a stoplight, I
sorta liked it. It was a dark gray, kinda like my Suburban, not sure
the color did much for me but the car generally had some nice
lines/curves. I'm surprised I have not yet seen one being driven by a
Kiawhite, some of those guys (and a gal) over there have some high-end
iron they like to show off to their fellow rich old white bros. Have
not seen any of them vaping though, they are beyond hipstering, they are
Masters of the Universe.

Heh.  I regularly hassle the wife about “Downtown Abbey”.  Truth be told, it’s
actually very well done from a historical accuracy standpoint.  They went to
great lengths to depict Edwardian England as accurately as possible.

The wife is a total British detective/mystery program maniac.

Right now there is a set of Poirot(?) DVDs on the TV stand she’s going through.
I rarely watch TV, but when I want to DVR something it always seems like I’m
running up against one of her recordings.

Father Brown is pretty good.  Never seen Doc Martin.  I thought that was a
shoe?

I got caught up with “Call the Midwife” or whatever that was.  Well written,
but better yet, covered a part of British history I was totally unfamiliar
with, the late 1950s.  I found the cultural and societal shifts that were
taking place quite interesting, and something I had no former knowledge of.
The “Bletchley Circle” program that had the women who had worked as code
breakers during WWII was pretty interesting from that aspect as well.  Didn’t
watch it all, but saw some of the episodes.

Re: [MBZ] From bad to worse to nightmare

2016-02-08 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Kaleb,
I've used this exactly twice in the last 20 years.. it's worked [I got
lucky] both times. I make no claims it will work in your situation, but
pass it along.

Clean the broken tap with spray cleaner that doesn't leave a residue, like
brake cleaner, to remove residual oil.. clean the broken end that you now
have in your hand, Mix and apply JB Weld to the tap end you have in hand.
Put a nice thick coat, but don't go hog wild, you want to fill any spaces
at the crack point where it broke off.. THEN, position the broken shaft to
the broken tap resident in the engine and secure it by any means possible
to keep it from moving while the JB Weld sets up... Once secure, WALK AWAY
let the J B Weld completely cure.

[I give it a day] .. Then... spray lube the threads down the tap hole so
you aren't pushing dry threads.. put a tap handle on the offending tap..
and GENTLY back it out.. If you get a 1/8 turn out and it feels like it
locks up... go back in and gently back with luck.. you will un lock the
threads of the tap and back it out..
Some back and forth, and you win.. maybe.

Grant...

Re: [MBZ] Mercedes 400SEL Long Body Very Rare

2016-02-08 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
At least MB got over it relatively quick. VW seems to have farted around with
crap wires for several more years. My '98 has 'em though not as bad as with the
earlier cars. VW's other problem is that the wires are all EXACTLY the right
length with no strain relief and the apparent assumption that you would never
have to monkey with anything. It can be very difficult to repair a wire because
theres no extra to work with.
My '05 Golf doesn't seem to have anywhere near the issues the '98 does with
wiring although being 7 years newer probably helps.

almost cheep enough to get me interested in a 140, but then there is
the self destructing wiring.  I'll pass.

Too bad the Deutsches goobermnt goobered up the wiring for so many years.

But the goobermnt goobers did what goobermnt goobers do.  Make

Phrynie! Great show, my daughter put me on to it. She drives a Hispano
Suiza and lately bought an airplane!

A lot of those shows are on the PBS web site to watch or on the PBS app
on the AppleTV (and probably other devices). PBS have a new show about
a hospital during the War of Northern Aggression that is kinda slow but
some good costumes. It's on the web site/app or on after Downtown Abby.

There is a Brit sort of Netflix thing called AcornTV that has all the
Brit shows on it too. My wife got a 30-day trial sub but I have not
watched it yet. I think it is like $6-9/month, not a bad deal if you
are into Brit shows. A lot of them are on Netflix too so you can binge,
maybe Amazon Prime.

FOXTV also have an app on the AppleTV so you can watch those shows any
time, they have the commercials in them though. Have been catching the
new X-Files, I don't even know when it is broadcast. Mulder has the
X-Files theme song as his ring tone on his phone, too funny.

That’s on her DVR list. That’s a pretty good show, too, from what I’ve seen.
She also watches one with an Australian socialite who solves mystery in the
1920s, I think. They have some cool cars on it.

Re: [MBZ] GP relay for OM603

2016-02-08 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
I stole the GP relay from another car. Arkie starts right up now.
The fuse was good.

The good: It was dated 1986, so it was the original GP relay.

The bad: I took it apart and there is a burned component within a
coil. Maybe some heater to do with timing?

Has anyone ever repaired a 005 545 45 32 GP relay?

Before it failed, the GP light was not on and before that, it didn't go off.

Sounds like I need to just haul that thing up here.

I'll try a new fuse before I pronounce it dead, but as of now, it

Off to a Mardi gras parade, or I'd swap fuses now. The old rusty

Kaleb,
I must protest. The 1980 300SD was the last year of real MB quality. After
that, MB starting replacing things with plastic, seats that tear and wear, etc.
My 1980 300SD has over 425,000 miles on dino oil, never had the head off, still
has the original exhaust, etc. etc. I get it out and drive it sometimes to
remind myself of what MB used to be. Anyway, we all have our favorites. The 116
is mine, even with that darn Chrysler servo.

Here is a DIY on Benzworld:

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w140-s-class/1447840-photo-diy-lumbar-support-bladder-replacement.html#post3507953

And here is an abridged (short) version:

1.) Remove the panel from the back of the seat by unscrewing the two T20 screws
in the bottom of the panel.

2.) Release the white plastic rivets on the old bladder and slip it out of
position under the white foam panel and the seat springs.

3.) Remove the new bladder from the foam panel it ships on by releasing the
white plastic rivets.

4.) Fold up the new bladder and slip it in place where the old bladder was
located. Secure it in place using the white plastic rivets.

5.) Cut the vacuum hose on the new bladder as close to the end as possible, Cut
the hose of the old bladder as close to the bladder. Use a short piece of
vacuum line or rubber hose to connect the two hoses together.

I came up with #5 because it’s a real PITA to snake the new hose into place
around the seat hinge. Just cut the hose on both bladders and splice the hoses
together and you’re done.

Re: [MBZ] The epitome of MB quality, comfort, and engineering

2016-02-08 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
All the 116s around here rusted away, stinking Russian steel won't
hold up to salt. They rusted away in Germany, too. Otherwise they
were great. Ditto for the W108, other than the rust and new seat
covers, they last forever.

I'm being forced to decide whether or not to restore my 87 300D with
400,000 miles or so -- getting hard to start in cold weather, may be
just bad pressure valve holder seals, may be wear (it had 250k on it
when I got in, unknown maintenance). I can get it back to factory,
but don't know if it's worth the time and effort on a nearly 30 year
old car

Au contraire, 0w40 is a fine oil when its extremely cold. Its the wrong choice
for Bob. There were many times over the years when it was the right choice for
me.
5w40 strikes a good balance between hot weather and cold I think. The manual
should have a chart of what thickness oils you can run at what temp.

Re: [MBZ] 77 240D glow system woe

2016-02-08 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I'm gonna guess the relay is expensive and thats why my (formerly Dwight's, now
Dimitri's) '78 240D had/has a button in the dash. The button goes to a starter
relay on the firewall, hold the button for 20-30 seconds, then start the
car.Whoever did the initial conversion used wires that were much to small, like
16ga. I upgraded to 10ga which was the biggest I could get locally. Fred gave
me wire that I think was 8ga which I ended up using for battery cables on my
lawn tractor...

The pencil plug upgrade kit still uses the existing under dash glow
timer/relay, at least it did when I did my TD some years back.  Maybe there
is something new now?  Another route would be to convert to the inside
ender-mounted relay used on the later models; should be available cheap
used.

By the way, my TD started and ran much better with the pencil plugs.  As
mentioned earlier, pencil-style plugs are available that screw into the
old-style head.

Re: [MBZ] 77 240D glow system woe

2016-02-08 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Before I forget, if you do the push button thing remember 2 problems I had:
#1. The hot wire from the relay to the fuse fell onto the exhaust manifold and
shorted out.#2. The light in the dash came from the power supply to the
relay. Those two together meant that when #1 happened I didn't know about it

Better system is hot wire to the fuse, then to the relay, from the hot side of
the relay to the glow plugs AND the dash light. That way if the fuse blows you
don't get a light and you don't get the sound of the relay closing.

Philip,

50A is correct, according to the service manual.  We installed an 80A
because (1) that's all I have and (2) that's what was there.  Now we know
better...

Perhaps the push-button modification will be where we end up, I'll offer
that as a possibility.

I have looked at these little milling machines, some of them say they
will do tapping and have some sort of tapping speed or something. It
looks like they just go at it like a drill bit, though slower, and I've

Anyone ever done tapping on a milling machine?

Just because some of us know that doesn't mean everyone one

seemed to be a good opportunity to mention the process.

I have no knowledge of how Kaleb was using the tap, and taps

Re: [MBZ] Mercedes 400SEL Long Body Very Rare

2016-02-08 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
When I did brakes on my '84 190D I couldn't get 'em bled to save my life. I
tried the old school pump the pedal technique, the Mity vac technique and even
the push fluid up the pipe trick, nothing worked.
I borrowed Fred's power bleeder and was done 2 minutes later. His connects to a
tire for air pressure, it came with the right size cap for my car and worked
perfectly.
The kit I ordered has the right cap for the Golf although the rest is more like
a pump sprayer. I know I could have just bought a pump sprayer but this wasn't
that expensive and already has the right bits for no fuss. The Golf has ABS and
I've been told that for ABS cars a power bleeder is a must. That said I did
front calipers on the Ranger with no power bleeder, just don't let the
reservoir go dry...

If you are going to "Toss" the Speedi-Bleed, send it to me. I'll pay for

I too had a Speedi-Bleed failure when the brake reservoir blew out a section

Also the little rubber caps have to be good and not cracked/rotten.

I have seen them work and they are impressive, but I must have a power bleeder
curse.

I have a "Speedibleed" from years back that I need to toss, as it won't hold
pressure for any length of time, and a later pump sprayer type that definitely
works better than the Speedibleed.

However, I don't like having to dump a large amount of pristine brake fluid
into the pump sprayer one as I feel like it's tainted once it's pour into this
thing. And there's no way I would leave the leftover fluid in the bleeder.

Maybe you can demo it at the next CQ?

You _could_ replace it with a starter relay (like old Fords used) and a

Re: [MBZ] From bad to worse to nightmare -- tapping

2016-02-08 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
I have done it on a lathe. The same would work fine on a mill, but I would
not use power. Either lathe or mill is good for alignment, using a
spring-loaded adapter to encourage the tap forward.

Also, I have read that gunsmiths in particular, might prefer to use carbon
steel taps instead of high speed steel. The point is that if they break off
they can be broken out by hitting with a hammer and punch since they tend to
be more brittle. I have not verified this myself. I've been careful (and
lucky!) not having broken off a tap as yet.

I have tried the alum solution to dissolve a screw. I was unsuccessful with
this as it was likely a stainless alloy which did not dissolve.

I think that any tapping fluid would work ok for aluminum (Al). I have read
that WD-40 is a good cutting fluid for Al, I just use my regular all-purpose
cutting fluids for cutting or tapping in Al. No problems or issues.

I have looked at these little milling machines, some of them say they
will do tapping and have some sort of tapping speed or something. It
looks like they just go at it like a drill bit, though slower, and I've
wondered how those things can not break taps off doing it that way.
Anyone ever done tapping on a milling machine?

When using a tap - or a die - a technique that can help avoid
breaking them is to turn backwards often to break off the
chips created by the cutting. That can be as little cutting as:

cut for 1/8 turn forward - 1/4 turn back to remove chips - repeat

or as much cutting as:

cut for 2 or 3 turns - 1/4 turn back to remove chips - repeat.

Also, using a lubricate is a good idea. A respectable
hardware store should carry thread cutting oil. Or mix lard
2:1 with kerosene or diesel for iron and steel. I don't
remember what's a good choice for aluminum...

Kaleb, I Tivo'ed that episode but it originally aired a week or two ago.
The follow-up showed them at the restoration shop, where the owner gave
them the bad news about the engine being too badly corroded to repair. In
deciding whether to fix up the car enough to make it driveable ($6k!) the
question was whether Max Hoffman's ownership might make a difference in the
value. the answer was a resounding "yes".

Re: [MBZ] Mercedes 400SEL Long Body Very Rare

2016-02-08 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I have seen them work and they are impressive, but I must have a power bleeder
curse.

I have a "Speedibleed" from years back that I need to toss, as it won't hold
pressure for any length of time, and a later pump sprayer type that definitely
works better than the Speedibleed.

However, I don't like having to dump a large amount of pristine brake fluid
into the pump sprayer one as I feel like it's tainted once it's pour into this
thing. And there's no way I would leave the leftover fluid in the bleeder.

Maybe you can demo it at the next CQ?

That is what it looks like is included in the $160 kit from Kent

Nearly a repeat of last year for us, freezing weather in February which is
not normal at all. This a.m. there was frost on my back window. This

2016-02-08 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Its been really warm here, nothing is really frozen, theres no real ice on the
lakes. Somebody went through one of the lakes on a 4 wheeler the other day.
Last year we had several feet of ice and kept it until like the first week of
May...
I bought 4 cords of fire wood last summer and haven't even burnt half of the
supply I had before I bought. Its good because the stuff I bought wasn't super
dry. The other day Angie said "I guess we won't get any wood this summer." I
asked if she thought it would never get cold again... I won't buy as much wood
this year but I'll still buy some, maybe 3 cords, 4 if the price is good what
with the cheap price of gas.

I have no knowledge of how Kaleb was using the tap, and taps

I didn't see the episode (not any of the show for that matter), but my
first and second cars were both 1951 split rear window bugs (second was the
parts car). One was the deluxe model - aluminum trim strips and hydraulic
brakes! No synchro in the tranny (never was - built that way), semaphore
arm turn signals (with added lights on the fenders), 1100 cc engine rated
at 25HP.
I paid $125 for the first, $50 for the second one (1964-5), and sold them
for $500 and $100 respectively about five years later. The dune buggy guys
coveted the 16" rims back then.

I was fairly certain my hell here required 5w40. It was 84 today already.

Re: [MBZ] 77 240D glow system woe

2016-02-08 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Actually the time the car mysteriously wouldn't start I got to seriously
impress a co-worker. It took me a minute to find that the fuse was blown but it
really just sort of cracked right by the screw. I managed to twist the fuse and
get the end under the screw head so it would contact again. A bread tie held
the wire off the exhaust manifold and I was just getting done as this clueless
accountant comes over to ask if I'm okay. I said "I think so, lemmie check" and
the car fired right up. He was astonished that I'd fixed it in the parking lot
with a bread tie. Told everybody around the office I was MacGyver

Re: [MBZ] One Simple Question...It's not an Oil Thread

2016-02-08 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
With Car Quest getting acquired by Advance they stopped carrying the Car Quest
synthetic oil I had been using that carried the VW spec. I was at Autozone the
other day and they had Turbo Diesel Truck on sale for $25/gal so I grabbed a
gallon of that. I'd used the Car Quest stuff because it was $24/gal...

The Golf requires fancy oil to keep the cam from spinning off. The only stuff
at FLAPs is a Valvoline stuff they want $8/qt for. ID Parts recommends Liqui
Moly 4100 which Amazon has with free delivery:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001052HGE?psc=1=true_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00I
ordered on a Wednesday and got it Friday. For $5 more ID Parts includes a
filter and drain plug.
My VW guy put in 5w30 and the car has been consuming a quart in around 4,000
miles. Since I put in the 5w40 Valvoline stuff it seems to be slowing down.
Theres a huge debate about 5w30 vs 5w40 in the BEW VWs, hotly contested...

The comment on 03-13-2009, 03:21 PM #9 by Jim Caudill, Senior Member,
is quite interesting:

I could have written exactly the same thing as RobbieKnobbie. The only
thing I would add is get some thread forming taps and learn how to use
them. My progression in learning about tapping is:

 #1 Hand taps
 #2 Using only "gun taps"
#3 Why didn't I start with thread-forming taps to begin with?

A manufacturer's comment about thread-forming taps is at

http://www.balax.com/sites/default/files/photos/Balax_Catalog4.jpg

A thread on that subject is at

[MBZ] The epitome of MB quality, comfort, and engineering

2016-02-08 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
It has been said that the LWB 126 diesel such as the 300SDL and 350SDL
when no rod bending issues are present are the top of the mark of MB
quality. I would say I agree but since my 2 210 diesels are down at the
moment I could drive my 210 v8 gasser by decided to bring my 140 diesel
out of hibernation. I will now once again say that the 140 diesel is
the epitome of MB. While the 126 is a close 2nd in my mind a 140 diesel
can't be beat, they are one hell of a car. They blow the 210 out of the
water but they are really different classes of cars.
