Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Question

2016-10-28 Thread clay via Mercedes
Spent the day working on the brake issues. PIA

IT rained last night, so had to wallow in the wet putting the car on jack
stands, removing the hard line, taking off the calipers, attempting to remove
rotors.

The SEL line did go on, even though it was a bit off with a few angles. At the
moment, there is still no fluid making it to the rear calipers.

Old calipers were hard to convince to let go. I as able to BFH the driver
side, but passenger side was a no go. My Crapsman impact tool was non function
at the trigger. I tried al the wrenches. Pooped out, so hit a pawn shop to
see what the prices were. Turned out they charge almost retail for used gear.
So, I picked the low end HD impact hammer air tool. It did the trick.

Rotors were less than willing to let go. Neither side would come off no matter
the blows with a rubber mallet or the 4# BFH. They would loosen, but hung up
on the parking brake bottoms. Screw it! I will come back to that when I can
figure out how to get the top of the darn hoses loose.Anybody have a good
idea? I put heat to them, Kroil, freeze stuff, there was an excess of slippage
and the 11mm nut wanted to round. I stopped before I really did damage.

I put the fresh built calipers on with the old hoses. I cracked the bleeder
and filled the reservoir. Then, I pumped the stop pedal like a mad man for
around 20 minutes. Nothing was coming out the far end. It was getting dark
and there was not enough time to build a pressure bleeder. I did have a coke
bottle that I tried to make a quick vac bleeder out of. It crushed. Instead
of messing about more, I put everything away and went in for dinner.

While cooking, I saw an old Nalgene bottle on the counter and decided that
would be a better pressure vessel. I poke holes sized for the tubing, slipped
them in, used some RTV to seal it, and will allow that to set up, then try to
draw out the brake fluid in the morning

That?s insane. I just looked up that part and you?re correct -
$24. I?m wondering if it isn?t the exact same thing as this:

These are the air cleaner buffers on W140s, and they look exactly
the same as the buffers used on the 617 diesel. I?ll see if I
can figure out what the thread size is on them and post it here
for comparison. These are the ones I keep in my spare parts
drawer that are pretty cheap (less than $6 from the dealer.)

This appears to be a classic example of jury nullification. There are always
(at least) 2 sides to every story. Clearly, the defendants committed the
acts they were charged with, so the jury must have seen something redeeming
in the evidence and arguments presented by the defense. Overreach by the
federal government? The tasing, takedown, and arrest of a defense attorney
seem...extraordinary in that setting.

Andrew,

occupation of the Federal lands in Oregon.

I will say that I was stunned to see that they were acquitted. I only hope
that the government pursues civil charges for the damage they did to Federal

Let's have a civil discourse here, folks.

Re: [MBZ] Not Al Bundy

2016-10-28 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
This entire chain of events is seen by a large part of the population as
classic government over reach.

Still to come is prosecution of the officers who shot and killed the
unarmed man who was part of the group driving to meet with government
officials.

It is a complicated case full of many layers.. The Jury heard the issues
and by law, gave their ruling.. The Judge and Prosecutor seem to be having
a hard time accepting the proper rule of law..

More episodes will follow, I'm sure.. it is far from over. Under it all is
Harry Reid's involvement and some kind of jake leg deal with the Chinese
for minerals under Bundy property.. as I recall..

Re: [MBZ] Want to buy a NEW Diesel car?

2016-10-28 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
My daily driver (other than a pickup)is an 08 Outback (2.5 NA gas) with
almost 60K now. So far, only scheduled maintenance except for tires,
wipers, and AC belt. Very serviceable car to date although front seats are
tight for oversized people and back seat knee room is very cramped (2010
version was better). Consumers reports says more recent models less
reliable (only average). My 08 was assembled in Indiana from Jap drivetrain
and 60% North American parts, according to the sticker. In many ways, I
liked my 79 300TD better until it got hard stuck in a groundhog tunnel
during a downpour. I was excited about the Subaru Diesel but I guess we'll
never see it here, at least not with current ETA thinking. The 2WD GMC
pickup is very prone to getting stuck (even on dry pine straw) when no load
in back.

Me too. I was stunned when I heard the verdict.

Weren't some of the lands involved at the site BLM? I knew the facility wasn't.

I think the prosecutor got it wrong, based on what I have read. Unfortunately,
I think this is going to have a big (negative) effect relative to the control
of Federal lands reverting back to the states. Not a good thing in my opinion.

If Federal lands revert back to the states I believe much of them will end up
becoming private, meaning it is no longer public land for use by and for the
public. That would suck.

You're supposed to put one in front of the ball and one on the tongue, then stop
when the truck's stick is a couple inches in front of the trailer one.
I sometimes put the first one on top of the ball and stop an inch after the

[MBZ] Last day to bid on a 1954 Bentley

2016-10-28 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
The price isn't crazy yet. Might sell for under $20k.

http://bringatrailer.com/listing/1954-bentley-r-type-4-dr-sedan/

The turn signals remind me of the 1954 Wolseley sedan I drove when in Fiji
(RHD). It had semaphores that worked occasionally, which was cause for
amazement. The shifter was on the floor between the front bucket seats,
and the complicated lever system to the transmission would sometimes jam,
disabling the car. Leather seats + 4 speed - lots of fun to drive and
worth every penny of the $250F purchase price.

Element. Thing I liked about it was that it had a plastic bathtub floor so you
could hose out the insides. A college friend has one, he loves it and plans to
hold on it it as long as possible since nothing really replaces it.
Speaking of which my dad is pretty upset with Jeep for not making a real
replacement for his Liberty. The Renegade and Cherokee are both soft roaders
with low hanging plastic thats too easy to break offroad. I've tried to get him
into an Xterra but hes too biased against the asian brands which is too bad
seeing as its the last real offroader that isn't a Wrangler. He doesn't want to
pay Wrangler prices or have it turn into a deathtrap when a front end component
wears out...

What was that Honda thing, was like a wagon/SUV sort of thing with side
barn doors.  I kinda liked those.  I forget where I was but ran into a
young couple who had one, were traveling all over the US for some
extended period.  They pretty much lived in it, had it basically
outfitted to sleep and cook in, rack on top for some stuff, bike rack on
the back.  Was just big enough for them. It had AWD, they said they
could go almost anywhere in the parks and places off road  It was pretty
much a box on wheels but had great utility.  Reminded me somewhat of an
old VW bus.

Yes, they're mandatory, but not just yet, and pretty much any new car designed
after 2014 includes one already. When Kaleb mentions Spark, Chevy's cheapest
car, he's probably talking about the new chassis that came out in 2016 model
year. I'd like to buy a Spark EV, and I'd like to have the camera, but the EV
was based on the old chassis and the camera was never an option.

http://www.nhtsa.gov/About-NHTSA/Press-Releases/2014/NHTSA-Announces-Final-Rule-Requiring-Rear-Visibility-Technology

Today's final rule requires all vehicles under 10,000 pounds, including buses
and trucks, manufactured on or after May 1, 2018, to come equipped with rear
visibility technology that expands the field of view to enable the driver of a
motor vehicle to detect areas behind the vehicle to reduce death and injury
resulting from backover incidents. The field of view must include a 10-foot by
20-foot zone directly behind the vehicle. The system must also meet other
requirements including image size, linger time, response time, durability, and
deactivation.

"Rear visibility requirements will save lives, and will save many families from
the heartache suffered after these tragic incidents occur," said NHTSA Acting
Administrator David Friedman. "We're already recommending this kind of
life-saving technology through our NCAP program and encouraging consumers to
consider it when buying cars today."

On average, there are 210 fatalities and 15,000 injuries per year caused by
backover crashes. NHTSA has found that children under 5 years old account for 31
percent of backover fatalities each year, and adults 70 years of age and older
account for 26 percent.

Re: [MBZ] Backup Cameras

2016-10-28 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
I guess that explains why MB is still trying to get extra money
out of calling the camera and option. Like I said, every other
make I come across already has these, even the cheapest GM, Ford,
and Dodge products. And they have had for at least the past year,
some even longer.

2016-10-28 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
Its all a little fishy. Story was she was living with her
boyfriend or something and they just broke up and she needed to
move. I am figuring she moved back in with him. If we would have
just put the house on the market 2 months ago it might have been
sold by now and this nightware would be over. I guess I might
have to call another realtor to get that done, for some reason the
one I have doesn't seem to understand the sense of urgency to get
it listed and sold or rented, whichever happens first.

2016-10-28 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
What was that Honda thing, was like a wagon/SUV sort of thing with side
barn doors. I kinda liked those. I forget where I was but ran into a
young couple who had one, were traveling all over the US for some
extended period. They pretty much lived in it, had it basically
outfitted to sleep and cook in, rack on top for some stuff, bike rack on
the back. Was just big enough for them. It had AWD, they said they
could go almost anywhere in the parks and places off road It was pretty
much a box on wheels but had great utility. Reminded me somewhat of an
old VW bus.

You can get narrow and short, like an XBox, Fit, Spark, Smart, etc, but all the
small ones are so tall that the aerodynamics aren't that good.
The Spark EV is a few inches shorter than my 1975 Civic was (a Civic without the
bumper pads is probably as short as a Spark), a few inches wider, and a foot
taller. It doesn't have to be that tall, if I want to wear an Abe Lincoln hat I
can take it off when I get in the car. Just think what range the Spark EV could
have had if it were 100lb lighter with 5' less frontal area and a Cd under 0.3.
And it wouldn't look like it was about to tip over.

I liked the Scion xBs when they came out, and would have seriously considered
one if I wanted a new car with decent room for stuff. Considering that they
were Toyotas in disguise meant they would probably be decent as far as build
quality and reliability. Prices were a little stupid after they got rolled
out, though.

The interiors were sort of cheap and plasticky, I thought, but my expectations
would have been low in that regard.

Andrew,

Since you have some connection to the situation (BLM) I am curious to know your
thoughts on the outcome of the trial with the Bundys and their occupation of
the Federal lands in Oregon.

I will say that I was stunned to see that they were acquitted. I only hope that
the government pursues civil charges for the damage they did to Federal

Let's have a civil discourse here, folks.

TPMS is required, I forget when it started. Likewise traction/stability control,

All the Japanese cars seem to have rear view camera since '15 or so.
Spark EV, last made 2 months ago, never had it, wasn't ever available.
Do the Spark gassers have it standard for 2016/2017?

TIG is like an electric ox-acetylene in that the filler is not

MIG uses the filler as an electrode, so it is consumed.

Technically both use shielding gas, but MIG and "wire-feed" seem
to be almost synonymous, though they are NOT as there are
wire-feed that are not MIG. I _think_ all MIG are wire-feed, though.

Operational difference. TIG is two handed welding, one hand

one-hand welding.
