Adsit has a VERY poor reputation and has been the subject of more
customer dissatisfaction than any other Mercedes parts supplier that I
know of (but I could have missed one or two).

Metric Motors and Noels are the two with the best reputation in the US
that I know of.

Metric has done well for us in the past. I recommend them. PP will rip
you off! Rusty may be able to source a factory crate motor. Double Z in
NY will give you an honest used motor.

The last theory I heard was that the OE dealer heads were mostly OK, and
the OEM cheaped out on the machining for the aftermarket heads, which had
the problem more often. Dunno how true that is. The injectors &
prechambers are all interchangeable, the new head is specified in the EPC
and it does NOT state that conversion to inclined injection is required.
I am kind of curious what the root cause is for the whole mess but at
least we know to expect it, where back when I was messing with this
(Jan/Feb 2002) nobody really knew except a couple people (Tom Runner, and
Metric Motors, IIRC). Some old p/c's work just fine on the new heads.
Metric Motors is adamant that the issue is inconsistent machining on the
new heads, and they probably see more of them (and more frequently) than
anyone else in the USA. Dunno how this applies to the used "#17" heads,
all the problems I've heard of relate to the new "#23" (or 22?) heads.
Marshall's theory is also interesting, although it would be highly stupid
for MB to do that on purpose!

Some ARE and sonme AREN'T. Ask Dave M. about using old prechambers! Not
clear when they changed - but SOMETHING changed. Some people have blamed
poor quality control and machining by MB. I don't buy that. I believe
that they stopped trying to make the old parts fit at some point in time

Tarek,
Just had the same thing happen on my '87 300D. As you have heard from
other posts, this is a known problem on the older "14" heads that may or
may not be caused by overheating. In my case, I can't recall any
overheating incidents in the time immediately preceding (prior 18 months)
my first symptoms (lose of coolant after a longer run). I also obtained
complete maintenance records when I bought the car and have since kept up
with all maintenance.

There are several options for repair:
1. Your VERY lucky and the head is not cracked. In this case probably
worth the money while it's off to have a valve job and the head machined.
Find a shop that has experience with the Mercedes diesel heads. Metric
Motors in CA will do it for ~$550 plus shipping (www.mercedesengines.net)

2. Your head is cracked and you are buying a used head
In this instance you have a couple options:
A. I know Rusty has one for ~$1,000 completely rebuilt and ready to roll.
The only problem is it is a "14" casting - so caveat emtpor! According to
Rusty it has had full

[MBZ] Teutonic twit

2017-03-22 Thread clay via Mercedes
I would love to hunt down and strangle the fool who thought it was a good idea
to put the rear bolts for the seats of a w126 in a divot.

On a PnP car it is near impossible, as you have no power to the seats, so
almost no access to the dang bolts anyway.

I have a set of spare seats for Allen that kind of came with the car. The ones
in the car were painted at one point and now look like Tammy Fay Baker. I got
the front bolts out with no issue. The rears, which live in this divot are
near impossible to get a wrench on. I tried the off set, open end, socket, all
were just not able to grab onto the head because of the strange angle. Then,
the bolts are either over torqued or rusted in. I finally got one to let loose
after the swivel head on the 10mm 3/8 socket nearly broke my wrist from all the
leverage my poor arm had to apply to the stubby handle. There is no space to
swing a long handle without smacking into the floor.

The other bolt in the rear had rusted itself in and though it too let loose, it
was rusted to the nut, so all it did was spin. I tried BFH and chisel, pry
bars, pencil butane flames, and finally just gave in and whipped out the recip
saw and cut the bolt out. Took part of the seat mount, but it is out.

Now I can clean the carpet, deodorize, make a repair to the mangled hole, and
maybe install the fresher seat in a day or two. I really should have gone with
manual seats.

Good point, and something to consider for sure.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, the hose itself is in good condition and
does not appear likely to fail otherwise.

It’s a weirdly molded hose with a bunch of strange turns in it. It’s certainly
possible I could use bulk hose, but I would have to come up with an in-line
fitting (tee) where the little line comes off to feed the windshield plate
heater near one end. I don’t think any of the bends in it are of such a short
radius that you couldn’t use straight hose, however.

Re: [MBZ] 240D 123 Lucas gremlins

2017-03-22 Thread MG via Mercedes
The fuses for the lights will not be carrying power till you turn
on the light switch. Those would be 1,3,7,9,11,13. The lights are
supplied power straight from the battery power bus, so the
ignition switch will not affect them anyway.

That said everything points to fuse 12. Take the thing out and
throw it as far as you can and replace it with a brand new copper
or brass fuse.

Curley McLain via Mercedes wrote:
Yes. I am glad it is a 123. The weirdness continues anyhow. The top
row of fuses: 1,3,5,7,... and window fuses a and b on the left side, all
have no juice, switch on, according to the meter. Some of them are for
headlights and tail lights, but weirdly, the headlights and taillights
work, but the turn signals don't. I checked this with a good digital
meter, black on engine, red probing fuse contacts. Bottom fuses (Even
numbers) and fses c, d, on the right, all showed 12.13V.

Switch? Wire from switch? Headlights are unswitched...but they work.

That was my first thought, but no amount of wiggling could create a
closed circuit, where generally with a bad switch, the contact can be
made by wiggling the key, or switching on, off, or wiggling key
counterclockwise.

The list being sure it was a ground, I tried there second.

Y'all may remember a couple weeks ago I posted about the electrical
gremlins in the 240D (81)

The thing acts like it is possessed by the prince of darkness (Lucas)
not designed by MB/Bosch

These circuits all went out at the same time:
Gas gauge
temp gauge
turn signals (4 ways work)
both window circuits
heater blower

Today I dug into the cluster and loosened and tightened the chassis
grounds behind the cluster.

It resulted in no change.

I left the switch on in the process so if bad contact was made good, I
would hear the blower or other circuits working. There was nothing.

Where to look next? Either there is a bad feed to multiple circuits
in the fusebox or bad ground that affects all these circuits.

I'll head out with a meter to be sure all are getting juice, but my
thinking is still that I am chasing a bad ground somewhere. It does
not appear to be the grounds behind the cluster.

I’m picking up some silicone sealing tape tomorrow. I had clamped off the hose
yesterday while troubleshooting my ACC system, and I suspect the edge of the
clamp I used cut into or creased the hose. The leak is just a tiny spot that’s
no more than 1/8”. The hose itself is in good condition, it’s not dried out or
hardened, so if I can patch it I should be good for a long time.

[MBZ] W126 Weird Hose

2017-03-22 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Just found a small crack in a hose that goes from the left rear of the engine
near the oil filter housing into the “false firewall” and over to the heat
exchanger connection. From the looks of the EPC it’s also got a little branch
that comes off to feed the windshield plate heater. MB part number 126 832 33
94. Can’t tell if it’s NLA, as it shows being available on a number of
different parts web sites.

Anyone ever change one of these out? It looks like a real PITA. I’m seriously
thinking of trying to patch the hose, as the crack is only about 1/8” and it’s
in an area where I can get to it pretty easily.

Here’s a link to the EPC picture. It’s part number 158:

Nobody has heads for wagons anyway, no matter what they say; you have to

Actually, the interior is very clean so maybe no quite so sad as I had
thought. Engine is suspicious due to surface rust and air cleaner missing
a nut. Undercarriage suspension bits have surface rust. I know Silver

I'm given to understand they went to great lengths to make everything
plausible. For instance maybe you could do the thing but it would take an
implausibly long time or be ridiculously difficult or require a tremendous
about of the stuff you were doing it with but it COULD be done.
Unlike the A-Team that could make ANYTHING bulletproof with a gas torch and a
couple trash cans.

The premise is good, but it needed to be realistic.

Mission impossible (original tv) had some similar premises, but was a

There is a local television feed on cable that's a national provider in most
markets called "MeTV". They show all kinds of older TV shows, like Hogan's
Heroes, Twilight Zone, etc., etc.  One of the shows they run is MacGyver, which
precedes Hogan's Heroes (which I often watch before I fall to sleep.)

I never watched the show when it aired, but have heard about it, especially the
spoofs on Saturday Night Live.  I occasionally see the last few minutes of it,
and since having done so, have found that it's got to be one of the goofiest
bad 80s shows that ever existed

And yes, someone is already overpaying at the current $3005 bid.

Ahh the wonder of being outside the rustbelt.
I *think* I'm going to spend some quality time welding my Jetta back to
ship-shape and get another year out of it. I'd thought it had totally rotted

People still think I'm crazy to drive a car with 280,000 miles. "What will you

And don't forget to CHANGE YOUR FUSES

--FT

On 3/21/17 7:59 PM, Scott Ritchey via Mercedes wrote:

Many fuses are downstream of switches and get power only when certain
switch configurations are set. F1, for example should only get power when
the light switch in park or headlight OR with the light switch in left or
right standing AND the ignition switch in off or acc.

You really need to look at pp 104-105 (power distribution) of the ETM and
identify specific circuits that fail to get power even with the switches set
right. Power or no-power at any fuse doesn't indicate anything unless you
know the switch settings.

Basically, ALL of the power (except starter) comes into the light switch
first and most of it is fed from there to the ignition switch via two wires.
But there is also one wire from the light switch hot feed to the fuse box
fuses 2 and (I think) 6 that should be powered at all times; this wire it
also powers the windows through a relay. Fuse 2 is supposed to power turn
signals (among many other things). The two (a and b) window fuses should
only be powered if the window relay is powered through fuse 12 (ignition
switch in run or start).

Hope this helps.

Yes. I am glad it is a 123. The weirdness continues anyhow. The top
row of fuses: 1,3,5,7,... and window fuses a and b on the left side, all

have no

juice, switch on, according to the meter. Some of them are for headlights

and

tail lights, but weirdly, the headlights and taillights
work, but the turn signals don't. I checked this with a good digital
meter, black on engine, red probing fuse contacts. Bottom fuses (Even
numbers) and fses c, d, on the right, all showed 12.13V.

Switch? Wire from switch? Headlights are unswitched...but they work.

That was my first thought, but no amount of wiggling could create a closed
circuit, where generally with a bad switch, the contact can be made by

wiggling

the key, or switching on, off, or wiggling key counterclockwise.

The list being sure it was a ground, I tried there second.

lot worse on a newer vehicle.

Wouldn't sand paper risk embedding garnet particles in the metal, which
would prevent a good seal? I've got some really fine wet/dry paper, I
think in grades from 800 up to 5000, that I use for sharpening wood
chisels. I can easily get a mirror shine on those.

I'm sure the issue will resurface. I'll snag a new glow plug on my next order

Other than tongue, the alternate and far more effective means of lapping
injector halves is with a glass plate and emery cloth or very fine sandpaper.

I used diesel purge to try to clean them at first, and then as the assembly
lube. Diesel purge didn't really cut the carbon like I had hoped, but
brake cleaner did a pretty good job of loosening it up.

Car ran very nicely this a.m. except for the uneven idle, but then that is
how it would perform before after a diesel purge treatment.

Awesome! I had seen this site but couldn't find much on their quality. The
company in California is talked about on the interweebs.

As far as buying a used engine, might get a good one if you can wait around
until you find it, or you slap down the cash for a rebuilt. I must admit,
after the last 2 tanks of diesel, I am not too worried about needing an
engine soon. The motor is literally purring now that it is being run
regularly. I haven't even done the diesel purge and second oil change yet!
