Oh - for wanting to do _that_ you think you qualify as crazy?

That's not crazy at all. Sounds sensible, especially if a
purchasable trailer doesn't fit your boat or needs. But you will
probably want more than just a welder. Maybe a band saw, abrasive
cutoff saw, possibly sheet metal brake, and some place to paint it.

I got my flatbed trailer from a local custom shop and had them
build to my request. Maybe there's one near you that could build
what you want for not much more than what the material would cost
you.

Re: [MBZ] 15%

2017-07-07 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
There are about 30K gun deaths a year in the US and also about 30K motor
vehicle deaths,. But 20K of those gun deaths are suicides. The remaining 10K
gun deaths include lawful self defense and justified police shootings, in
addition to accidents and criminal shootings. Andrew's numbers show some of
this breakdown but the categories were not clear, at least to me. Also, that
data seemed to be compiled from several media sources. Most folks working in
this area use the annual FBI Uniform Crime Report data, which is more complete
and consistent. As an aside, about 85% of people who reach a hospital ER with
a gunshot wound from a handgun survive if they arrive alive. Rifle and shotgun
injuries have significantly lower survival rates

Yes two different ones or there were, haven't looked it up in
about a year now but last info I saw still had problems with
cracking in the mount. That's why I figured that an MB original
would be designed right and work without problems.

It's basically the same thing as the using that aftermarket kit
to put in a Sanden compressor except I'm not too impressed with
the quality of those kits. They still seem to have unresolved
problems. I figure if the mount for the Nippondenso bolts onto a
617 then all I have to do is use the hose ends from that to
connect it in place of the R4.

Apparently no one has tried the conversion, though MG has researched the
situation.

2017-07-07 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
I don't know what the mounting is on the Sanden, or anything about that
compressor. I'd try to adapt a MB Nippondenso if I had one to try.
Another good altermative is to pick a compressor from a very popular
car. Impala, malibu, taurus/500/taurus/whatever it is now, or asian big
sellers. I found one that used a ND very similar to the MB ND. I had
to change the clutch to fit it to MB (serp belt system) I think I got
it off a hondog.

Since you will be making a custom set of hoses anyway, the port
configuration does not matter. Just take the compressor and hard lines
from the donor, cut off the old hoses, then get what you need made up at
a hose shop.

Oh, and perhaps we should also have a law against stealing such

Re: [MBZ] has anyone tried this turned into R4 compressors should last for the life of the driver

2017-07-07 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
I can tell you that there are chineese Sandens out there that are probably
just as bad as the imported R4s, so you might not gain much.

I have a few NOS Yorks from the 60s that I've been tinkering with... I
pulled apart one from a parts car and found them quite simple inside.
Rebuild kits are still available, so I'm going to rebuilt one myself and
use it when I add AC to the 250S I rebuilt earlier this year.

If we are going to do a comparison of people shot vs traffic fatalities, I
believe a critical question needs answered.

How many drivers in those traffic incidents deliberately and with wilful
intent aimed the car so it would strike the selected to be deceased victim
to inflict deadly harm upon them?

Apples to Apples, Oranges to Oranges

[Privately, I do agree that a large majority of folks driving should be
subject to complete background checks prior to being allowed to purchase a
car, however... ;)) ]

You can finish it in clear UV resistant epoxy.
The UV resistant part is vital, I made a wooden rack to put an ice chest in
front of the trampoline on my Hobie 16, the regular epoxy I used didn't last
one summer, would have been much better off with ordinary varnish.

Or better yet, start with teak 2x6. I have one, but don't remember how
long it is. at least 16' I think.

Ripped and laminated? Just get the Navy to let you chuck a couple
treated 20' 2x6s in a 8" or larger steam pipe, cap it off, apply steam.
Next morning they will be like cooked spaghetti.

Somewhere I have plans for a wooden boat trailer (and matching
sailboat) in old Popular Science magazines. You were expected to buy
proper plans of course, but a guy could make do for the trailer
anyways from the sketches in the magazine article. IIRC, it had bent
wood rails, spaced at leaf spring width, then bending in towards the
hitch at the front.

IIRC, your boat is pretty light.
2x6 ripped thin enough to bend and laminate are probably adequate, 2x8
would have plenty of margin of safety I'd think.

You'd likely need new springs, galvanized axle, etc, but I bet the entire
package would be quite cheap.

I bought a buzz box and my son and I rebuilt a boat trailer about 15 years ago.
Used the frame and all new running gear. Repaired original frame. Has never
come apart.

I don't think so. But perhaps the enlargement of all vehicles is
related to: 1. increased safety BS required by laws. 2. interest by
buyer/decision maker (female) of new vehicles (in larger vehicles. This
is why the cute little RAV/CRV/etc. is now almost as big as a grand caravan.

Regardless, There would be a demand for a small truck. But the madison
Ave bowties spoke, and DC/MBUSA listened. Do without, fool! THEY said
you DON'T want one!

"The company believes the pickup is too small for American shoppers."

For the same reason that Ford Rangers have ridiculous resale values?

I agree that Mercedes shouldn't go chasing the abandoned market of
small truck users who are still mourning their rusted out LUVs, but
somebody ought to be making trucks for those who don't want a SUV but
don't need a F150 either.
LUVs, Couriers and the like were immensely popular in the 1970s, and
the reason for their existence hasn't gone away, has it?

[MBZ] has anyone tried this turned into R4 compressors should last for the life of the driver

2017-07-07 Thread Rick Hawkins via Mercedes
Folks

i was asking if anyone had put a sanden on a 123 car?

instead you told me that R4 compressors SHOULD last

i have gone through too many …. flushed and filled with mineral oil and r12
refrigerant

upside down or right side up, they are a radial compressor

i have heard tales of that but no hard evidence

all new imported compressors …. so, back to the original question …. has anyone
done a sanden conversion on a 123

i am considering it

actually, how many of you have a 123 on the road with cold a/c?

thanks,

I won't be doing much beyond painting it for corrosion control. I did see
in the latest Eastwood flyer a rig for media blasting that uses a pressure
washer, so no dust flying around. That would be pretty cool, maybe I could
do that in my driveway every several years and repaint the trailer to keep
the corrosion in check.

Looks rigid to me.

I saw in the past in Aruba a bunch of old merkin sedans that had the
roofs cut off to make open-air tourers. I guess they worked OK there,
the few roads were nice and the only issue was the rains but they were
so clapped out it didn't matter.  You could see them twist though.

More like deer that ate something that cause some softer binding.
You can see the more normal looking pellets in some places. Seen
it like this around here on occasion.

That sounds a lot like the week I bought my first (and last) new car.
What is it with mental defectives like us and our new acquisitions?

When I was 25, I bought a new fuel injected 2.2L Plymouth Horizon.
Not much to look at, but it weighed 2100lb and had more "torks" than any other
non-turbocharged hatchback. (the turbocharged Shelby GLH-S version of my
chassis was out of this world for its day, I had the same engine minus the
turbo, and the same 3.56:1 gearbox, I have no idea why they didn't put the 2.78
in mine like the did the earlier carbureted cars)

A couple days after buying the car, I'm rolling down Main Street in Lansing,
street all to myself. It's 4 lanes wide, I'm in the left lane which will become
a left turn lane at Grand Avenue. As I'm waiting at the light a block before
Grand, a RX-7 comes up behind me and moves over into the next lane. First
generation, 12A engine. (rough equivalent of 190e 2.3 8 valve, the 13B RX-7
GSL-SE would hold with a 2.3-16v until 60 or so, the events of the next few
seconds might have been different if he'd had one of those)

When the light turned, I gave it more gas than I normally would, expecting the
Mazda to try to change lanes in front of me and hit the brakes to turn onto
Grand. When I heard the squealing tires from the next lane I dropped it to the
floor. His tire smoking launch almost got his door up to my front bumper before
my engine hit the power band. After that I just modulated the throttle to keep
even with his front fender as he wound out that little Wankel.

When we hit Grand, I braked as late as possible and turned left.
He overshot the corner, backed up and turned left. Went by me about 60mph, his
passenger flipping me the bird with his arm extended fully out the window.

Mitch.

I agree that Mercedes shouldn't go chasing the abandoned market of small truck
users who are still mourning their rusted out LUVs, but somebody ought to be
making trucks for those who don't want a SUV but don't need a F150 either.
LUVs, Couriers and the like were immensely popular in the 1970s, and the reason

I wonder if some of the issue could be safety related? I doubt any of
the big car makers want to be known for creating unsafe vehicles. I seem
to recall that the smaller GM trucks of a few years back did not have
good safety records. Maybe it is more difficult to build in the safety
features that we have come to expect. Trucks tend to be full frame and
that may not provide the same crush ability as the smaller unibody cars.
Honda Ridgeline was the exception but Honda has now changed it too so
that it is more like a real truck.

I had a little Toyota pickup way back when - remember the ones that had
the turn signal mounted on the fenders - it was one of those. My father
had a Datsun pickup. We rode around in them back in the early 70's and
thought nothing of it but the thought makes me cringe now as I really
doubt they were very safe.

Re: [MBZ] PS hose repair?

2017-07-07 Thread MG via Mercedes
If you were going to get one then this might be the better
choice. It does 4 more different hose sizes.

Mitch Haley via Mercedes wrote:
I forget where I was, but one place I used had a huge expensive looking hydraulic press, and dozens of collets of different sizes and number of segments to fit any imaginable crimp ferule.
It had to have been either the Kubota dealer or the Cathey Company, probably CatheyCo, they made the oil cooler lines for my 300SD back in 2002.

I figured FLAPS would use some handheld thing from Yellow Jacket or Mastercool,
but never checked with them.

I just now checked Amazon, and the Mastercool tool looks like it probably does exactly the same job as the big hose machine I saw years ago.
If you only need the sizes it's set up for, that thing could pay for itself in rehosing one car:

Doesn't look at all like the bear poop I've seen. I'd figure that for a large

Bear poop this time of year is mostly berries and is more like a pile than a
