Perhaps that's explained by weeping injector fuel return lines, very loud
klatta and rough running when it's first started, and an injector (#4?)
that is leaking at the joint in its body. In addition, when it's first
started and running rough, it periodically puts white smoke out the tail
pipe and some place on the right side of the engine.

Yes, I had that thought, too.

In Cygwin, I can do it easily with a Unix command. That, however, doesn't
correct the problem with the Win OS itself not being able to read the
files.

Is there a way to do that in Win 7 that doesn't involve handling each
file and directory individually?

I very much agree that education is absolutely key. Along with that
education has to come progressive responsibility, adjusted as is age
appropriate.

This is a big bone I have had to pick with the present education public
school system.. the lack of teaching responsibility for all actions. That
along with the use of logic and reasoning, coupled with basic education
about the working of a firearm serves well in keeping the user or handler
as well as all around them safe.

Some of you may know that NRA does a school safety training program, taught
by NRA trained and qualified instructors called the "Eddie Eagle" program,
that teaches gun safety to children.

When I was actively involved, many of the instructors were also Law
Enforcement Officers who donated their personal time to do the programs.
Kids were almost always very interested and came away with useful skills.

My shotguns are hardly personal protection devices, so keeping them locked
isn't an issue. We don't keep loaded guns in the house - house rules. If you
bring a firearm into the house that's fine, but the chamber will be cleared and
the magazine unloaded if you do.

I totally understand your concerns and having a loaded weapon due to where you
live. That makes perfect sense to me. However, it's not a concern here so we
don't keep loaded weapons at the ready. I don't have a concealed carry permit,
either, so I have no reason to keep a loaded weapon on my person. If we lived
in a rural or crime-ridden area, it would be different.

Re: [MBZ] Preliminary Report on the 2002 ML320

2017-09-07 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
OK! So I drove the new (to me) ML320 from Vancouver WA to Endicott WA over the
long weekend. The first couple of fills showed a fraction better than 20 mpg.
At one point on the run east I clocked the tach at 2,800 rpm @ 75 mph. On the
trip back I was forced to take WA hwy 14 instead of I-84 because of the
wildfires. The run from Kennewick to Vancouver was mostly on the 2-lane hwy 14.
My mileage on this run was 22.73 mpg.

It appears (looking at the MB fora) that this fuel economy is typical of the
MLs of that generation. I suppose that the 22+ mpg economy is a result of the
slightly lower speeds on the 2-lane, probably an average of 60-65 mph.

The vehicle performed great and the fuel economy is acceptable to me. The trip
from Endicott to Vancouver took about 7 hours, but was very comfortable.

As a side note, we went to Moscow ID so the daughter could do some shopping,
and had lunch at CD's Smoke Pit. I've been to the famous and the secret great
barbecue places in Kansas City, and CD's ribs were better!

What's funny is that Mitch's 3.7 (why isn't it a 370?) idles rough, a few times
during yesterday's trip, very rough. It's bad enough I plugged in my OBDII
before the trip to try to look for misfire codes, but it wouldn't communicate
with the ML.

If you want to see some high numbers, fill it up a half hour into your long
trip and again before you cold start it. But my high number was mostly towing
and included one cold start, and today's fillup was about 150 miles west of
yesterday's fillup, and there was a noticeable west wind yesterday...

How many rpms are you turning?
I think I was getting about 2400 on the tach at 62mph, about 50mph+ at 2000.
Oh, and my speedo was reading 61 at 60mph, and I never got around to verifying
the odometer, which could throw the mpg off if it's not accurate.
One thing I noticed was that rpms go up on slight hills, before it downshifts.
I never understood how 'variable lock up' converters were supposed to save fuel
over fully locking converters.

I was looking at
https://www.pure-gas.org/
the other day, and was surprised to find sources all over the place.

The last time I was there, the only valid place listed within 50 miles of me
was a tiny airfield, now there's over half a dozen, including my old propane
company. I called them up, and yep, they've got Pacific Pride 91 octane, zero
ethanol. So that's what's going in the generator and chain saws from now on.

Thanks Grant and Curt.

I have a can of Seafoam, I'll add some to the tank. I only use non-ethanol
gasoline, and add stabilizer. Generator gets started and run a bit once a
year, was last run for hurricane Mathew last fall. It has a shut off, and
I use it that. Shut off the fuel, run it dry, and then I drain as much
gasoline as possible out of the tank and use that in lawn mower, weed
wacker, etc.

Education is key at an early age. The thought process of gun locks and keeping
guns locked up is not something I agree with. A locked up gun does no good when
needed. Kids should be trained to leave them alone. All of our kids were
trained in this at a very young age and there is a gun loaded and within reach
at all times.

Re: [MBZ] OT Small engine trouble

2017-09-07 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Just a thought:

Float sticks on carb while engine is setting... excess fuel runs down
intake pipe, fills cylinder with fuel. Fuel washes past rings, into
crankcase oil is contaminated with fuel/oil mix.

You start and run generator, which does not "run right" because float is
still stuck so fuel mixture is out of control... You shut down engine and
start checking "stuff" and find fuel/oil contamination issue..

Question: How long has the engine been setting with fuel in carb, and do
you have a fuel shutoff valve at the tank? Did you close shutoff valve and
let engine run out of fuel on last run before you had the present issue?

Failure of the needle valve and/or seat. Sometimes some schmoo will get in
there and won't let it seat good. All small engines ought to have a fuel shut
off and you should use it to prevent this kind of issue.
Put a couple ounces of Seafoam gas additive in the fuel, 2oz per gallon ought
to cover it. Let that run awhile and your problem should be gone. My Honda
CB900f motorcycle used to pee gas out the carb overflows if it sat awhile
without Seafoam in the gas. I'd put a can in and let it run and the problem
would go away.

I agree, safe handling of firearms should be taught very early on.\
I figure its easier to lock up the ammo than the guns, my dad uses the "crap

Works for me - but do others who are lurking care to follow along?

Regarding your email issue - what about using Samba on the desktop
to allow a network mount of the directories? Either Win7 "windows
networking" mount the Linux desktop (which I do and know is pretty
easy) or have Linux mount the Win7 "network shared" directories
(which I know can be done but don't do it enough to remember how)

Or, can you use cygwin to change the permissions of the email
directory so Win7 can write?

Sound to me like MATE would be a good choice. I chose not to
because (for not particular reason) I questioned whether MATE
would be around long term. As of now, I see no evidence of it
fading away.

I had already used XFCE4 for a few situations so I shifted to
that. I administer a bunch of computers and the users on all of
them seem to have made the shift without problems.

I also quite using gdm (gnome's graphical login) and am usually
using lightdm. This has resulted in not having a user-switcher
for multiple users on one computer to have a GUI to switch from
one users login to another. I have found no solution for
lightdm. For the system where it was important, I am using KDE's
display manager, kdm. With the help of a bash script (and
a .desktop file to make it a graphical button) I have a non-gnome
solution.

That was probably un-necessary since gdm can be used with _any_
desktop environment such as XFCE4 or OpenBox. At that point I was
just so irritated with GNOME I avoided all the GNOME stuff I
could. *smiles*

I'd say you are a good candidate for OpenBox. No desktop icons.
None. Right-click on the desktop if you want a menu. I have
custom keyboard shortcuts to open gmrun, roxterm (my current choice
in xterm), and emacs so effectively I never use the menu.

gmrun is a linux-style "run" prompt with tab completion and
history. I use it for opening GUI programs.

With OpenBox, there is no auto-mounting of drives, or "folders" to
double-click on to open a file manager. I consider those to be
features - but most of the users on the system I take care of feel
otherwise. :)

While it wouldn’t prevent every accidental death, I believe it would reduce the
number.

My youngest son had a very close friend who was killed in this manner by
another friend who knew nothing about guns and was playing around with one (I’m
sketchy on the details as to where it came from.) He pointed it at my son’s
friend at close range and pulled the trigger, killing him instantly. Of
course, he “thought" it was unloaded. He knew nothing about gun handling and
probably didn’t check it or know how to. And he violated firearm Rule #1 -
never point a gun at something you don’t intend to kill.

My son feels guilty (unnecessarily) because had he been there he would have
insisted on taking the gun and making sure it was unloaded, as well as
schooling his friends on proper handling. He was trained in an NRA approved
course as a young man on how to handle a firearm. We didn’t have any in the
house at the time, but I still insisted he take the course for reasons just
like this one. Today he is a responsible gun owner and stores/handles his
firearms in accordance with prescribed safety procedures.

As a (responsible) gun owner, they should be secured in a safe or cabinet with
trigger and/or cable locks, and ammo should always be stored in another
location away from the guns in a secured (locked) container as well.

So, we went to Dallas for the Great American Trucking Show on 23 August and
then to Austin to visit friends we made while I was in graduate school at UT.

The 1990 E300D drove fairly well. The only real problem we had was when the
right rear tire picked up a nail and left us stranded because the spare I had
aired up before we left had no air in it, because it, too, had a nail in it!

We drove 1628 miles and used 58.329 gallons of diesel for a fuel economy of
27.91 mpg.

There were a few idiosyncracies, about which I will ask in separate emails.

It worked out well for Tom Vilsack. Mt. Pleasant was a small town with
30-40 lawyers. I don't remember the population of town, but the whole
of Henry county was about 7500 in the late 80s when he became Mayor
after someone shot up the city council over a backed up sewer. I'd
guess about 3500 for the population of Mt. Pleasant. Do the math!
that is about 1 shyster for every 100 people in town! 1 shyster for
every 200 people in the county! NONE of em starved! (unfortunately)

Tom liked to go out and walk early in the morning. I still think
Christie is the brains of the family. Her old man was one of the
leading shysters in town.

I despise the looks of MS Win on a Linux system -- I use the command

In a hurricane, unless you’re perilously close to the eye wall, rain comes
in “bands” as the arms of the hurricane pass over. That means the rain
isn’t a constant deluge, it comes and goes sometimes with hours in
between. For that matter, the weather can be weirdly pleasant between
these rain bands as well, with bright sun and clear skies.

We’re expecting tropical storm force winds Saturday night and Sunday. This is
not a significant rain event like the one they had in Houston. At worst we
might get 10”, if that.

I inferred that the laptop was preventing the install of Linux. A
VBox guest would avoid that issue.

But if the issue is just avoiding Gnome3 - why Gnome at all? I
pretty much gave up on Gnome when Gnome2 came out. With Gnome3 I
am actively avoiding it. I now generally install XFCE4 for most
users. Or LXDE if you like the looks of MS Win.

While not actually Gnome2, MATE and Cinnamon are effectively forks
of Gnome2 but are current, though not especially lightweight.

Or even KDE is better than Gnome right now. (I think)

Or go really light with Enlightenment or Open/Black/Fluxbox.

Or try Sugar, developed for OLPC XO-1 (One Laptop Per Child). It's
- well, different.

Part of the beauty (or problem) with Linux is the abundance of
choices. There are LOTS of options other than Gnome3, so don't
let a problem with Gnome3 prevent you from using Linux!

Personally, I run X from my own .xsession file, use OpenBox as the
window manager, and don't use ANY session manager. But I'm also a
very heavy command line user and like it if I don't have to use a
mouse, and am not bothered by a lack of automatic stuff like
mounting drives, setting up networks, launching programs, etc.
