If you do want to home school, check into the curriculum developed by the US
Department of State. It was developed for use in countries where schools were
either non-existant or incompatible with US standards for dependents of US
State Department employees stationed abroad.

Probably the best school curriculum around. People who intend for their
children to attend Yale and Harvard obviously won't settle for a bunk school
for their kids!

See if there is a Home Schooling Co-Op in your area.
There are a few here that are run by churches or civic org.
The instructors are all retired teachers / teachers that took leave to
home school their kids.

Have we hit a time warp and returned to 1978 or something?

I don't remember very much doubt amongst the scientist at Forestry Canada when
I was working there as a post-doc in 1990. When I was an undergraduate in the
late 70's there was considerable discussion about whether man made climate
change was real, but by the late 80's the people doing research and looking at
data were completely convinced. By data, not religious exhortation or
indoctrination.

The actual argument about global warming has been settled in the research
community for a generation, it's politicians who raise non-tenable objections,
not scientists.

What Dan said - especially "An alternative - get really, really involved
with their school and education. It takes far less time but almost always
yields benefits. Studies have shown time and time again that parents who
take an active role in their children’s education have higher performing
children from an educational standpoint."

Our four kids went to "the worst" grade school in town and three ended up
attending Ivy league schools with scholarships, three have masters degrees,
one has two masters. I credit my wife's major involvement with the schools
and participation in the local gifted and talented parents association
(gifted kids get shoved aside more than challenged kids).

First thing to do is to see what the state requirements are for home schooling.

http://sde.ok.gov/sde/home-school

One point of concern: "Academic progress must be established and maintained
for the child.” That means it’s up to you to make sure the student is screened
on a regular basis to make sure they’re learning and at he expected education
level for their age. If you slack off or don’t maintain this, your kid is
screwed - even more so if you toss in the towel and send them back to public
school.

I say this with the most consideration for your wife - she doesn’t seem to
stick with stuff long term, and if that’s the case, home schooling is not for
her. You’re dealing with the education of a child and a developing mind. You
screw this up and you’ve got a person who may not ever recover from the damage
done - for the rest of their life.

I know a couple of people who home school, my boss (four kids) and my next door
neighbor (one kid.) Both say it takes a major commitment of time and effort to
do, far more than they ever expected. My boss does it (I think) for secular
reasons, I don’t know what the motivation is for the neighbor.

I know my boss’s wife is going full bore full time with their home schooling,
and they interact with a lot of other like minded home schoolers, so the social
aspect of it really isn’t an issue in their case. They also do a lot of
extracurricular stuff, like field trips and things like that.

It is, for all intents and purposes, a full time job/commitment that can’t be
blown off. As a university trained teacher myself, I wouldn’t do it.

An alternative - get really, really involved with their school and education.
It takes far less time but almost always yields benefits. Studies have shown
time and time again that parents who take an active role in their children’s
education have higher performing children from an educational standpoint.

That’s my professional opinion as an educator and parent.

The wife is wanting to start home schooling our kid. I’m not sure if that is a
good idea. My main concern is being socially inept later in life.

Home schooling is not the answer for everyone - there were a lot of home
schooled kids that entered HS with our kids - some were very well prepared,
but most were left in the dust. Not all parents are capable of educating
their children, and a good number shouldn't have been parents in the first
place. . . .

11 years living across from these people has taught me all I need to know about

I used to say that if their house was on fire I'd shoot kerosene on it to help
it burn. Then I realized that if the house burned all the way down it'd be
easier to rebuild so the new plan is to take my garden hose over and slow the
fire a little so the house would be uninhabitable and more difficult to

How about this - compare horse apples on the pathway versus toxic
particulate traces in the greenhouse gas? Do complete analysis
including biology and mining and more.
The largest problem is that there is little acknowledgement that
plebes can be different. What will different produce? Why does gov't
need to drive that? Plebes can do this better than gov't.

Is the ASR light supposed to be lit in limp home mode?

Is limp home mode on all the time, or intermittent?

Most likely.

So I was out looking under the hood today and I figured it would have the same

Respectfully, I do not agree.
1. Snopes.com has a protracted history of comparing applet to oranges and
labeling it as "fact". Which they have yet again done in this link. The
entirety of the rebuttal is focused on CO2 production in a "presumed
volume" by "a " representative volcano. Further, the entire rebuttal is
written around only CO2. Again.. apples to oranges called "representative
fact", when the volume of gasses and emissions from a volcanic eruption.are
composed from a large volume of multiple gasses and particulates, ALL of
which have lasting effect of the "ecology".
2. The writers zeal to discredit a book lost in the dustbin of library
science is easily exceeded by his/her need to prove his/her chosen
dialogue, without proper scientific consideration of any material except
CO2, which the scientific community at large freely agree is only one of a
host of "greenhouse gasses" ... ie. Remember Freon? What happened to all
the Freon which was making a hole in the ozone? How about sulfur dioxide,

I have the same diagnostic system the dealer has. It’s unlikely the dealer has
anyone capable of working on this car at the level required.

I have a third (yes, third) generation MB independent nearby that would be my

Thanks, Karl, PM sent.

The typical culprits for these cars, which are nearly identical functionally to
the W140s of the same vintage, is bad wiring. However, mine has all been
replaced as has the ETA.

As for the diagnostics, they’re actually pretty good for this vintage model,
and for that matter, the same on all other MBs of the same vintage, so there’s
nothing unique as far as the V8 W124 over any other model produced at or around
the same time.

I’m not ready to toss in the towel. It’s narrowed down now so it’s just a
matter of being able to zero in on the affected part and have at it

Thanks!

Interesting that you would put the onus upon those States, rather than on
the ones that are actively promoting the bigger-government position.
(Reminds me of the Soviet position that their system would/could only begin
to work once the entire world was using it. Yeah, right.)

Any/all data that one would need is already available. Anything important
enough to justify such invasive government would be reflected in the
per-capita per-population-density actuarial statistics that are already
collected, for crime and property damage claims. Compare the
program/non-program States. It's probably fairly easy to quantify how much
such inspection programs _cost_, it's the benefit that is harder to
quantify. But, can it be quantified sufficiently to determine if X is the
_best_ use of that amount towards the public weal? My guess is yes, and
the answer would be: not even close.

Inconvenient truth. There are currently 25 major volcanic eruptions around
the "Ring of Fire". Each day, ONE of those volcano produce more emissions
of "greenhouse" gas than mankind has since the dawn of the "machinery
age".

Sorry, mankind, you are just not that important, in the master scheme of

Re: [MBZ] Today's 400E Fun/Confusion

2018-02-25 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
So my confusion continues:

1993 400E (W124.034)

Complaint: In limp home mode, ASR light is lit at all times. Engine has high
idle (1200-1300 rpm) and surges with no load. When loaded (in gear or driving)
engine is smooth and performance is good. Engine harnesses, both upper and
lower, have been replaced. ETA has been replaced with a Mercedes factory unit.
Accelerator cable and linkage are adjusted to spec.

Diagnostics:

Analog (LED) tester and blinks:

LH - OK
CC/ISC - 2
ABS/ASR - 30
BM - OK
EZL - OK

With the SDS I got:

LH - OK
EZ1 - 017 - Crankshaft position sensor L5 (current fault, could b a “phantom”
fault according to the WIS)
EFP/TPM/ISC - 014 - Control module EFP N4/1 (stored)
GM - OK
ASR - 030 - CAN: No reception from EFP N/1

I can’t find anything in the WIS for a code 014 for the E-GAS (EFP) module.

Is it possible I have a bad E-GAS module? I have one on hand with a different
number, however, it came from a car without ASR if that matters. I know that
that number 2 for the CC/ISC is a real laundry list of stuff and is not
terribly conclusive with the analog tester.

Close inspection shows the diagnostic connector to be clean and intact. Wires
in the box are good as well and show no indication of damage or wear.

I’m befuddled.

The hypocrisy of the green movement is astronomical though. Al Gore's
environmental footprint is massive. His platform appears to be YOU need to
reduce so I can continue to spread the gospel. If we all lived like him this
world would be screwed. GW Bush lives a much more modest life which ironically
was one of Gore's problems in 2000...

Whoa. If he believes the climate is changing then that is a step forward.
But to turn a blind eye to all the quantitative analysis that supports a
clear link between human-generated greenhouse gas emissions and a warming
planet isn't really skepticism: it suggests a doctrinaire refusal to
accept an inconvenient truth.

OTOH, if Kurley has taken steps to reduced his personal carbon footprint
then I don't give a F what he believes.

Good point. It may have started out as a Buick hardtop that got wrecked in the
front and the guy who rebuilt it wanted an open car. Certainly the wheels are
not original.
Cars are precious on the island and nothing is wasted.
