[MBZ] OT: Darwin Award

2018-06-19 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes
Darwin Award-Honorable Mention

Plot twist: Indian forest ranger posed for photos with python draped around his
neck.

The rock python had just killed and eaten a goat, but perhaps more troubling,
the reptile had crushed and consumed its meal within shouting distance of a
school. Something had to be done.

So worried residents in Jalpaiguri, a city in northeast India, called Sanjay
Dutta, the local forest ranger, on Sunday.

As onlookers stared, Dutta corralled the snake with an animal-control pole,
then used thick gloves to grab the snake’s head and pick it up.

Crisis averted. All Dutta had to do was put it into a sack for quick trip back
to the wild, perhaps to the banks of the nearby Teesta River, where it wouldn’t
pose a threat to humans.

Instead, Dutta draped the snake around his neck.

It was time for a celebratory photo.

Some residents hoisted smartphones, motioning for others to cram in closer to
the forest ranger and the beast he’d captured.

Reports variously put its length at six metres or even an improbable nine
metres long – it looks closer to four metres long in photos and video of the
incident. Whatever the case, it was long enough to do what came naturally.

Suddenly perched on the very vulnerable neck area of a mammal, the snake made a
few efforts to wrap itself around the man.

Dutta batted the snake’s body away, at one point holding the powerful reptile
at bay while he smiled for the camera.

[Indian forest ranger Sanjay Dutta poses with a rock python in Jalpaiguri on
Sunday. Photo: YouTube]

But moments later, he was clearly in distress.

The snake had managed to wrap one coil completely around Dutta’s neck.
Meanwhile, the reptile had twisted its tail free of a man assisting the forest
ranger, further entangling Dutta.

Scared residents who, moments earlier, had crammed in for a photo, screamed and
sprinted away.

“It’s OK,” Dutta screamed. “It’s all OK.”

Clearly it was not.

As he walked away from the crowd, the python tightened its grip.

Dutta resisted the urge to panic or struggle, movements that would just make
the snake more aggressive.

“I was not scared for even a moment,” Dutta told Agence France-Presse. “Because
had I panicked, it could have been fatal.”

With a little help, Dutta managed to free himself. The end of the video shows
him walking away, shaken but breathing. He and an assistant kept a firm grip on
the powerful snake before releasing it into the forest.

Re: [MBZ] Compression numbers they are bragging about seem low to me

2018-06-19 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
It's even more complicated. That graph is for a static compression ratio with
no heat transfer. In a real engine, there is heat loss to the cold
cylinder/head/piston plus leakage past the piston and an intake valve that's
still partially open at the beginning of the compression stroke. After an
engine is running compression is much higher (less heat loss, less time to leak
past piston, and less valve loss because of the the momentum of incoming
chatge)

Re: [MBZ] Compression numbers they are bragging about seem low to me

2018-06-19 Thread G Mann via Mercedes

Here is an example youtube video of how it was done "back in the day" with
low compression diesel engines, slow crank speeds, and "grunt starters".

"We've come a long way baby" so to speak.

Re: [MBZ] Compression numbers they are bragging about seem low to me

2018-06-19 Thread Larry Turner via Mercedes

Thanks,

That certainly makes sense.    So my math method appears to be off by a
factor of 1.75 or so?   I kept mulling that over and came to the [wrong]
conclusion about multiplying the stated compression time the atmospheric
pressure and failed to consider the heat needed?  Now that you mention
it, there are so many variables at play it must be a much more complex
formula than I tried to make it..

Thanks for the explanation

Typical compression charge temps necessary to hit flash point for diesel is
400 degrees F.
Ambient air temp plays a part in reaching that flash point, thus, glow
plugs.
Crank speed is another factor.. thus, the need for a strong battery.
Next is compression condition of the engine.

You can put a hair dryer in the intake, add a booster battery... but if you
have low compression... very hard to start..

Re: [MBZ] Compression numbers they are bragging about seem low to me

2018-06-19 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Diesel engine is a "compression ignition" engine, so to fire the fuel/air
charge it must raise the temperature of the charge to a point at or above
the flash point of the fuel/air charge, so the engine "lights off".

>From my experience, the magic happens best between 390 and 420 psi on a hot
engine compression test.

Re: [MBZ] Compression numbers they are bragging about seem low to me

2018-06-19 Thread Larry Turner via Mercedes
Speaking of what an engines compression should be, I always thought it
was the compression ration X atmospheric pressure.  So a engine with
18:1 (as a diesel might be) would look for 18X14.7 (approx) = 264psi or
so.  While a gas engine at 7:1 would be ~103.  Is this logical?

Re: [MBZ] 300SDL oil cooler lines

2018-06-19 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Take a set off one of yer junkers, cut the ferrules, and replace the
hoses with new hose. Then replace. It will probably cost you all of
$20 or $30.

Alternatively, you could by enough hose (probably 6 ft or so) and 8
clamps and do the job on the car. That way you don't have to disturb
the nuts at the oil cooler or at the oil filter.

Re: [MBZ] 1991 Mercedes 300 Turbo Deisel

2018-06-19 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
I wuz walking in the parking lot next to McD's when I heard what sounded
like a Perkins 4 cyl Dissel in a 1950-1975 vintage MF tractor coming
from the McD behind me. Turned around to look and it was eminating
from a red newish VW. Not sure if it was the large jetta or a pissant.
Either way, the kid musta seriously done some "modifications" to make a
vw that noisy.

So I'm thinking you'd do well to replace the crusty jetta with the 300D.
