suppose the US market pickups got different engine and trim and
stuff, especially in recent years.

about streaming services - you can get programming anywhere you have an
Internet connection, hard wired or WiFi.

We’re lucky in that the antenna farm with nearly every OTA station in the area
is only a couple of miles away as the crow flies. With the great coverage of
OTA stations and YouTube TV we’re getting nearly everything we had with cable.

How does youtubeTV get there? I had assumed it ran on your interwebz.

I gave up on live TV due to poor quality digital signal and cost of service for
cable shows. I had intended to swap to the DSL folks back many years ago and
took the crimecast box back to their store. The fellow behind the desk was
bending over backward to get me to stay. I was talked into a phone/interweb
bundle because that was less expensive than interweb alone. The next time
service went bad and they tried to hike the fees, the box and I returned to the
store. Got another deal that dropped the bill back to the same price of two
years prior. I kept that up for 8 years until I began packing the house to
head out of SEA. Now I exist on the pitiful hotspot on the cell phone if I
need interwebz at the house in town.

AKC has crap internet. SWMBA is using DSL from the dark ages. Speeds of
2.3mbps. Just barely enough to stream netflix and download email.

Re: [MBZ] Tesla Model 3: More "Global Climate Change" than a Mercedes

2019-10-13 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Yeah, I’m sure that solar has come into play as well as wind power in the
villages. However, the time of the year when they really need the electrons is
when there’s no sun, too.

As many of them are on or near the banks of major rivers, I can see the hydro
thing if they can make it work.

I hated going to those places, almost as much as I hated doing work on the
reservations in the Lower 48. It was really depressing.

What doesn't seem to exist are the electronics to push back to the grid
only when the grid's on, AND your storage batteries are full, and that will
run your house from batteries while the grid is down. You can either go
full off-grid solar, with batteries, OR on-grid solar, sans batteries; not
 both.

Villages run on #2, but are now trying to break away with more of the
renewables. Micro hydro seems the most successful in that way. For the larger
venues, the Nat Gas blasters are spitting out electrons to pair with small
hydro along the Railbelt. Took me a while to figure out wtf that was about.
It is the part of AK that has trains.

Plus, when it was on Facebook when I bought it, there were lots of people
fighting to buy it. So, I thought it would be fast.

Re: [MBZ] Toyota Hilux?

2019-10-13 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Heh. If it isn’t one thing, it’s another…

I know they’ll wise up. Jaime’s met my youngest, he’s a smart kid and will go
far I have no doubt. However, he goes through these spurts of “enlightenment”,
shall we say, when my intellect sort of just goes out the window in his mind.
It’s not uncommon for him to come back in a bit and acknowledge his
mistake/ignorance, and when he does I don’t make a big deal out of it. It’s
more important to me that they be introspective. Being able to come back and
admit you’re wrong or made a poor decision is far more important, I think.

4GB or 400GB?
If I only needed 4gb/mo, I wouldn't buy it from Comcast.
(8 years ago, I paid $40/mo for Virgin Wireless datacard with 4GB cap, and

It’s funny, I find myself having exactly the opposite problem with my
father in the last every years. He doesn’t give my suggestions any weight,
but if a complete stranger makes the same suggestion then he calls to tell
me about it.

Best recent example is his purchase of a sports car. For a few years, he’s
been looking for a old British or Italian car. We looked at a few but
nothing really appealed to him. I suggested he look at Porsche Boxsters or
Mazda Miatas, as these are the modern interpretations of those old sports
cars. He didn’t give it much weight until we went to see a 79 Alfa
Spider. He owned one in the early 80s... but realized how 40 years has
aged him and the car, and it wasn’t what he wanted. The seller told him he
was selling to buy a Boxster. This made a big impression.

On the way home, he became very interested in a Boxster and within two
weeks he bought one. And he loves it.

I told you so?

Anyway... I think your day will come... it will happen to all of us
hopefully: our children will know better than we do.

speaking pf DVR, one thing I dislike about  Dish is the format they use
to record stuff on the Recorder.  I'm told there is no way tp convert the
Dish format to anything that can be used on more traditional formats.
I like to record some stuff (like LeMans) but unless I am committed to
Dish, keeping recordings is not likely.  Other than that, Dish has been
pretty good except for the ocassional streaming interruptions which are
usually less than 2 or 3 seconds.   When it gets wiindy we often have
interruptions - I assume the dish is shaking or something.

Has anyone had luck with OTA (over the air) antenna's?

2019-10-13 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Rick,

YouTube TV is a subscription service that costs $50/month. It carries many of
the major cable networks as well as your local stations, at least the network
affiliates. You use a streaming device like an AppleTV, Roku or Amazon
Firestick to access it on your TV or computer using their application.

The DVR function is built into their application. For instance, I just searched
for Family Guy and told it I want all new episodes recorded for the season. You
can also watch a fair amount of stuff on demand as well.

I bought a refurbished “Tablo” OTA DVR box for about $75. Using an HDTV antenna
and an external hard drive, it will record any of our OTA stations for me. It
has a subscription service that’s $5/month for the scheduling, which you would
need for the DVR function. Without the hard drive you can still watch OTA
stations, but not record them.

Probably, as the same platform was used for the trucks they sold here. That’s
why I’m not shy a HiLux is even relevant. The trucks they sold here under
different model names are nearly the same.

More importantly, if he ends up staying out west permanently as he plans,
having anything but a domestic car/truck in a remote area is not a wise
decision. It would be like driving a Benz out there. No MB mechanics anywhere
near the Grand Canyon….

I might need to revisit this at some point.  Last time I looked there
did not seem to be any that had DVR.  I also only have a 12mbs
connection here which normally runs about half that speed or even down
to 1-2 when everyone in the house is streaming and gaming.

We also looked at Philo, which has all of the “lifestyle” channels, many of
which she likes to watch. It’s only $20/month and also has DVR capabilities,
too.

We’re lucky in that the antenna farm with nearly every OTA station in the area
is only a couple of miles away as the crow flies. With the great coverage of
OTA stations and YouTube TV we’re getting nearly everything we had with cable.

2019-10-13 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I’m wondering that myself. I’m not putting up a dish as I don’t want to mess
with all the related crap that goes with it. That’s one of the great things
about streaming services - you can get programming anywhere you have an
Internet connection, hard wired or WiFi.

We’re lucky in that the antenna farm with nearly every OTA station in the area
is only a couple of miles away as the crow flies. With the great coverage of
OTA stations and YouTube TV we’re getting nearly everything we had with cable.

It will happen. It’s just a matter of when.

2019-10-13 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Our local cable providers don’t bother with “retention” until you bail. When we
had Verizon they would send you to someone that had the ability to deal to get
you to stay. Since Frontier and Comcast came to town their attitude seems to be
“Good luck, it’s been nice, we’ll see you.”

Since I’ll go to the store and see someone in person it might be different, but
over the phone that’s been the attitude. I’ll report back what they do.

Plant the seed. Sometimes more than once.   Give it a gestation period.
Min. is a month, normally a year or more.   At the end of the gestation
period, it is HIS idea, and therefore G O O D!

Don't keep replanting the same seed.   If you do it never becomes G O O D.

I guess they still sell hilux peekups  in turd world countries, or did
until a few years ago.

I looked at the headlights. There is a stylized H4 logo in the center. So, I
guess that means Hella. The glass looks great. When I looked at the glass
inches away I can see tiny little sand pits like on a windshield. But, I had to
get right next to them to see it. They look pretty darn good to me. The clips
are all sturdy, no cracks in plastic backing, all attachments look firm and
solid. I am really impressed with how bright they are.

2019-10-13 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
This has to be a global sort of mindset.

Look on eBay for parts, especially for the older cars. My favorite is trunk
tristars for cars like the W110/111 and others - brand new from the dealer for
under $50. People selling used ones on eBay for over $100.

I just don’t get it. There must be a market or these idiots (?) wouldn’t be
listing them.

Re: [MBZ] Toyota Hilux?

2019-10-13 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
No doubt.

He’s so all over the place I have no idea. He’s heading back out to AZ and the
NPS the end of this month, so I suspect he’s got truck/4WD on the brain. I
suggested some time ago when this was a subject that a good used Ford F150
would be a wise purchase and serve him well while being something easily
maintained in such a rural area.

As a parent, I am a total idiot, of course (implied) so my recommendations are
tossed aside unless they’re later adopted and presented as a new idea. After
all, what do I know?

Re: [MBZ] 123 for sale cheap

2019-10-13 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes

If you’re looking for a W116 driver project:

Lots of pictures at the local dealer - this might belong to one of the techs.
