cables with turnbuckles for adjustment from both inner corners to the
opposite outside corners of the roof. That has held for over 35 years.
Going just to the center may work but probably not as well.
In his porch the walls are sliding glass doors and the roof is
aluminum 2x8 hollow beams with fiberglass corrugated panels on them.
Probably less resistance to shifting and racking than the roof you
have with the plywood. The whole porch is about 20x35 with monolithic
slab on the ground so no racking or shifting of the floor there. In
your case I might be very easily talked into doing the same cable
tensioning under the floor just because.

___

I shall try to describe the issue in words but if that proves to be a
problem, I will either post some sketches or photos or both.

We have a screened porch on the back side of our house. It is roughly 10
X 20 and the inner side is attached to the top of the basement wall of
the house. The outer edge of the deck sits on a laminated beam that
rests on 3 bell piles.

The "walls" are essentially 4 X 4 cedar posts standing on the deck and
attached to a rim joist at the top. There are removable screen panels
installed between the posts. There are 4 panels on the outer wall
parallel to the house and 3 on each end.

The roof consists of a shed roof of 5/8 or 3/4 (cannot recall which)
plywood on 2 X 10 rafters. The inner end is attached to the wall of the
2 storey house. The outer ends sit on the rim joist attached to the top
of the posts.

We built this in the summer of 1984. It sat pretty much perfectly true
for many years. However we have had some dry summers and the porch and
the house have moved a bit. The bell piles settled and a couple of
summers ago I jacked the outer edge of the deck up about 4 inches along
its length and inserted blocking on top of the 3 piles to level the
porch as it was then lower on the outer edge than on the inner edge.

The outer wall of the porch also began to lean to the south. It was out
by 2 inches or more on 8 feet. This summer, I pulled it back to plumb
using a chain come-along.

My issue, is how to further brace it so that it will hopefully retain
the current plumb status if I remove the come-along. I do not really
want to put angled bracing in the "wall" of screens. My plan has been to
put diagonal bracing in what would be the ceiling if it had a ceiling. I
have collected materials to make 2 roughly 10 foot steel rods with turn
buckles in them that I propose to install. The plan is to attach the
inner end of one to the rim joist at each end where the rim joist meets
the wall of the house and to attach the outer end to the rim joist at
the middle point of the outside wall.

I do wonder if this will be sufficient to hold the porch in place. The
plywood sheathing on the roof obviously did not prevent the wall from
leaning and I assume that my steel rods must act somewhat similarly to
the roof sheathing.

Opinions will be appreciated.

I can't see the sun. Which way is south, and which wall is leaning?
Left end; Right end; Outer wall?

Where do you have the comealong run?

I had a similar porch in Ames, made of redwood 4x4s set on a slab on
grade.  THe redwood was rotting.   I tore it down, and put an addition
on.   (not a cheap or quick solution, but a great improvement.)

From What I can understand so far, I think your proposed fixes are good
choices for the assumption that nothing can obstruct the screen windows

One other thought, assuming it is the outer end that has gone south:
2x10 blocking between the center of the joists, and along the end, and
extra blocking where the side posts are.

If you can modify the assumption somewhat:  something like a 5/32 dia
cable diagonal with sufficient attachment.   If you can straighten it
with a comealong, there is not a lot of force needed to correct it and
hold things in place.

eBay and PayPal favor the buyer in almost every situation, which is good for
you *if* you’re the buyer. If you’re the seller, you’re screwed almost.

I sold a laptop a few years ago and the seller got seller’s remorse almost
three months after they took delivery. Said they wanted to return it as it was
“defective”. I told them that if they returned it to me I would consider a
refund as long as it hadn’t been abused. They went dark.

A day or two later I got an email from PayPal saying they were going to debit
my account for the computer. I told them to stuff it. Since I use a blind bank
account to fund my PayPal payments and purchases and I keep like $5 in the
account so the bank won’t close it, they took that but got nothing more. They
emailed and even called me. I told them I wouldn’t refund a dime until I got
the computer back, and provided a copy of the email I had sent the buyer
stating so.

They suspended my account. Big deal.

About six months later I tried using it and it was active again. I’ve used it
since and there’s never been a peep out of them.

Jerks.

thats an install issue, there is no good reason for panels to catch fire.
The other possibility is that the panels have built-in inverters. Inverters
occasionally catch fire, panels themselves never catch fire.
I don't remember when we installed our first panel, 2015? 2016? Something like

Re: [MBZ] Diesel treatments

2019-11-06 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
Power Service diesel treatment had some clouding at -20F, Howe's a bit more,
Hot Shot's the least, Stanadyne 2nd place. Those 4 probably wouldn't have
stopped an old MBZ from starting/running at -20. He didn't specify, but I hope
the diesel he was testing was full-on summer fuel. Amsoil synthetic 2-stroke
oil might be an interesting idea for lubricity, and it did great in his
rustproofing test.

Power Service 9-1-1 (he didn't mention mix ratios of any of the products)
didn't pour, nor would the untreated diesel. Amsoil 2 stroke oil flowed
gloppily, but 9-1-1 didn't flow at all. For all I know he might have mixed the
Amsoil at 50:1, which nobody does in diesel fuel in real life.

Re: [MBZ] 2000 E320

2019-11-06 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I've got this 99 $600E320 I fixed the conductor plate in the
transmission, 238kmi, runs well, in pretty nice shape, gets like 28mpg
in mixed driving, seems like a very decent car.  This replaced the 99
$500E300 which I really liked.  The W210 is not as solid as the 126s but
seem quite competent, peppy, good handling. They have more electronics
and nannies so factor dealing with all that into your decision.  I think
they are prone to rust in the rust belt, mine are southern cars so that
was not an issue.

$4250 sounds pretty dear for a near 20yo car, but then I am a bottom
feeder.  If it's really nice maybe $3500 if you have that kind of money,
but there are many of these around so looking around you might find a
better deal.  If it is someone you know, has records, etc. would maybe
be worth considering.  Poos could probably find dozens of them in FL,
old retiree cars being let go.

Not registered, but I have done some on various projects.   Truss
design, floor /roof load bearing etc.   What are you working with? Wood?
Steel? concrete? combination?

Any common issues with those? I have no experience with MB gassers.

[MBZ] W116 scraping noise on left turns

2019-11-06 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
1979 300SD. On a hard/fast left turn I'll hear a metalic scraping
noise. Doesn't happen on right turns or slow left turns and doesn't
sound like a bad bearing (it's a scraping/rubbing sound, not a low
growl).

I do need to refresh the rubber engine mounts. Any other likely causes
come to mind?

Re: [MBZ] Diesel treatments

2019-11-06 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
So what's their conclusion?   I've always figured Howes was a
trustworthy brand for antigel on the few occasions when I needed some.
(Getting caught with summer fuel when it turns bitter cold)   Other than
that, I am mostly of the Dr Booth school.   The caveat is: Since 2007,
some lubricity needs to be added, mostly as B5 to B100.

I think BG Or Howes Diesel Treat will do no harm.   Additives are mostly
pouring money into the tank unnecessarily.

Sorry, for the confusion. With age the little grey cells don't always fire
correctly. Pepboys includes free installation with free red/green corrosion
preventives. And sorry Kaleb, I haven't been to a WalMart since they started
putting American workers out of work with Chinese goods. If you see me go in
one, call the guys in the white coats as I've gone crazy. But to each his own.
Best Wishes,
