I don't recall why I dropped it about 25 years ago.

I thought Stanley bought Craftsman a few years ago and was recently making

Re: [MBZ] AZ Bob did not screw me over on a car deal

2019-11-17 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
There, I fixed it.   I have not seen a tire iron that would fit in a
3/8" or 11 mm hole.   Not even my BMW motorsickle tire irons will.  They
are small.   I always have a 12" extension in my box, and they work well
for this job.   Still takes me more than a minute.   More like 10-15 to
stop, open the hood drag out the tools change the spring and then clean
up pack up and start off again.

The lug wrench has to be the 123 or later style (or late 115) as the
earlier ones had a hook on the end to pop off the 110/111/112 center hubcap.

Dan Penoff via Mercedes wrote on 11/17/19 6:11 PM:

All it takes is a 3/8 Dia rod/lug wrench/long (12" x 3/8) socket extension, a
couple of 13mm wrenches and a minute and you can swap the spring out.

The lug wrench is the critical tool here.

All it takes is a tire iron/lug wrench, a couple of 13mm wrenches and a minute
and you can swap the spring out.

The lug wrench is the critical tool here.

So how does the spring work with the tensioner so it can be replaced in

Should be Illegal, since the goobers stick their noses into everything
else, including your bedroom.

Been a problem since BP took over Standard/Amoco/whatever stations in
the 80s and installed green handles on Benzine pumps.

Some places have yellow handles for Dissel.   Yellow has been adopted as
the semi-standard color for E-85.   I've also seen yellow for E-15. It
makes sense to standardize, and the INDUSTRY should do it, not the goobers.

On my rusty crypsler rims, (steel) I left it bare and the goop held.
For alum, I htink you can leave it bare or paint with anything for
alum.  (Rusoleum makes an alum primer.   That alone should be plenty. or
a spray of KILZ should work. Kilz is pretty sticky.

Frederick Moir via Mercedes wrote on 11/17/19 9:42 AM:

Thanks for the replies.
I have my own ancient tyre machine and the goop (rubber cement) that seals
rims.
My problem is that the sealant works but ( IMO) that the air is escaping
via the very thin layer of corrosion under the paint.
Corrosion and paint and layers of rubber sealant have been removed from the
tire sealing area, so was wondering what paint to put on the raw aluminum
alloy?
Wurth's ? or ? Or just leave it bare?
TIA.

[MBZ] Harbor Freight and Lowes

2019-11-17 Thread Craig via Mercedes
I was at Harbor Freight today and noticed their pitches for their
Inside Track Club.

Is this worth it?

I was also at Lowes and noticed Craftsman tools and toolboxes. Lowes has
bought the Craftsman name and will honor the warranty on existing tools.
They had all kinds of tools, which looked like the Craftsman tools I had
seen in the past.

Re: [MBZ] Cheep Jeep

2019-11-17 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

Strong work.

I sold an 86 Cherokee some years ago in Houston, it was OK enough but
the V6 engine was starting to have Unpleasant Noises and various other
fits.  I put it on Auto Trader or something, and was getting lots of
inquiries from Hablaers of Espanol who were wanting to ship it south,
but none of them wanted to pay anything.  Finally some guy and his 16yo
son came and bought it for a decent price, they were going to use it on
their ranch and the boy was going to wrench on it.  So that worked out
well and it was good for that.  I actually kinda liked it even though it
was sort of a POS, the V6 engine was always crap, I think it was
actually a GM V6 they had made worse, somehow.

geographic pockets and up here. Must be all the DOD folks coming and going.
Something like 35k active members, with around 30k dependents. Lots of cars
and trucks.

With the yota set to arrive in early December, me leaving for the holidays to
SEA until 2020, the order came out to lose the Yeep. I had taken a set of
photos on a chilly, but very spectacular sunny day in a scenic setting a few
weeks ago, which have been living on the computer awaiting the blessed event.

SWMBA got the yeep from a co-worker five years ago for something like $2k.
While doing research for values and market conditions on the interwebs, I
figured that would be the high end sales figure, but given the lack of service
since her ownership, and the trade in suggested value of “you pay us”, I
thought I might be well pleased to net $1k, but posted it at $1800.

I expected the standard CL lag in interest and responses, and had not tracked
down ALL the paperwork for the car (title) though I had a stack of records
dating back to the window sticker and original financing docs in 1999. After
my morning classes Thursday I composed some insightful copy and loaded up the
photo cache, even coughed up the $5, and posted the listing.

Within three minutes of it going live, I was getting slammed with inquiries. I
suspected it would be too dark for anybody to actually look at the car, and I
needed to get SWMBA back to the garage with the title before I could proceed.
That meant Friday or Saturday would be best. There was one fellow, very
persistent, who lived just down the road and wanted to see the car ASAP. Well,
asap, after his wife got home, since she has the cash. I said it would be fine
to come over in the dark so they could test drive it, but it might take a
smidge longer to close the deal. Not a problem, I was told, so they show up
around 1840 and take it for a drive. He comes back from the drive and will
take the car, do I want some cash to hold it or will a hand shake do. Shook
hands and as they were walking back to their jeep, SWMBA arrives. I send her
for the title and the deal is done. Cash, full price, and all within four
hours of going live.

I had a full day of classes to take Friday, but was down to one car, so I was
UBER dude for SWMBA and got to try out her car on the slick icy roads. That
Yeep drove like a buckboard wagon in comparison. Not that her yota is all that.

Saturday I wake up to this nasty white fluff floating out of the sky and
gathering upon the ground. In a most quixotic and futile attempt to keep the
junk from becoming packed and developing into icy ridges when driven on, I was
out there shoveling everything not nailed down well unto 2100. The weather app
said the stuff was going to taper off a bit past midnight. This morning I
removed my sore shoulders and rotund gut from bed and lit off the snow blower
to clear the drive and sidewalk so SWMBA could head out to church. Then I got
to get my morning coffee and see that it will remain cold for two more days,
then warm up and rain the rest of the week.

Works for me. I get back to the SL and SDL next Sunday.

There are fewer and fewer people interested in the classics. Having
acknowledged that, the fellow who won best of show at the local section Show

process of putting back together. Preservation, not restoration type work. He
was doing it with his dad, who works at the MB dealer.

The other gathering of younger owners, not section members, but a FB grouping

Not alloy, but I have use JBWeld to smooth out heavily pitted

Re: [MBZ] Semi-OT

2019-11-17 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
In your case, to me, it suggests perhaps a good wire brushing [wheel on a
drill, perhaps a brass wire wheel] to remove all corrosion to bare clean
metal, followed by
J B Metal applied with spatula as smoothly as possible, then sanded smooth
to present a clean surface to meet the tire bead.
Fresh primer and paint, perhaps spray epoxy. [your call on that one, my
thought is to make it durable as possible]

After paint is cured, remount tire {s} with tire lube so they seat well.

Re: [MBZ] Semi-OT

2019-11-17 Thread Frederick Moir via Mercedes
Alles.
TIA.
Fred.

Re: [MBZ] AZ Bob did not screw me over on a car deal

2019-11-17 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
That is good news, far better than dealing with stripped threads or worse.

I'm beginning to wonder if keeping a spare spring in my OM60x cars wouldn't
be a bad idea. I've heard several stories about these springs breaking,
not terribly common but would be very inconvenient if it happened on the
road and far from a parts source.
