I would suspect most folks will piss it away. I also suspect the government
will find a way to tax that distribution at the absolute highest rate too.

But you now have years to roll it over / recontribute it, instead of 60
days.

Won't that be fun, is it a taxable distribution, or is it nontaxable
rollover distribution in 2020 because you rolled it over in 2022?

Under 50, which Curt is. Over 50 there are catch up contributions one can make.
I was replying to Curt's comment, although I didn't quote him. You can start
drawing from funds penalty free at 59 1/2,

You can conceivably draw funds from a retirement account at 55, however it's a
bit complicated.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/kristinmckenna/2020/07/21/is-55-too-early-to-retire-what-you-need-to-retire-early/

A sad reality for many, is they were able to tap their retirement accounts
penalty free because of the CARES act. Not particularly wise.

Thank you.
Definition of "Ornery" ... 8V71 Detroit 2 stroke, with the mechanical fuel
rack out of trim, Minus 12 F, with about 20 knots of icy wind blowing on
you, and the primary and secondary fuel filters full of gelled fuel.

You replace both filters with new, fill them with fresh heated fuel [hedge
your bets however you can] Wrestle a pair of 24 volt batteries out of the
battery bay at 90 lbs each, then wrestle a fresh charged set in place [90
lbs each, again], then crank until they are dead and find the starter is
smoking really bad...

Pull the starter, replace it with a new one you just paid $900.00 for while
laying on frozen ground with sleet and snow blowing on you, wrestle the now
dead batteries out of the electrical bay, wrestle a fresh set in. [this
is getting old, and I'm getting cold] crank again Or
Remove the 3/8 pipe plug in the fuel filter fixture between primary and
secondary filter, install barbed fitting, plumb in an aux electric pump,
drop the pump pickup hose in a 5 gal can of warmed fuel. force prime the
engine system... hit start and listen to the big diesel start to rumble,
then stagger, then smooth out A what a relief it is...

Detroit engine numbering system ... 8= Number of cylinders, V=
configuration, ie V8, V12, V16, 71 = Number of cubic inches
displacement for each cylinder... thus... 8V71
No... you can't crank it by hand... ;))

There's a boost if you're over 50, so I can put 7000 in an IRA. (too
lazy to look up the current qualified plan catch-up amount, but it might

And you were prohibited from contributing to an IRA if over RMD age, but
that's waived by one of the COVID bills.

Re: [MBZ] question for young investor

2021-01-02 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Absolutely. You can have as many IRAs as you want. You can have as many 401ks
as you want, too, but each one would be from a different employer. My point
being in that if you don’t roll over a 401k from a pervious employer it just
sits in their 401k program, earning the same that it had been with the
elections you chose. What’s nice about this is that many employers pay the fees
on 401ks, so leaving the money with a former employer means you could get the
benefit of their 401k and they are paying the fees.

In these cases you often get regular “beg” letters that tell you how they’ll
gladly assist you with doing a rollover into an IRA or a new employer’s program.

You make a great point on fees. I was talking to buddy Ben about investing the
other day. They have a financial advisor and have been making something like 7%
over the last 2 years.Angie and I are (each, we have his and hers money) at
closer to 11% in that time frame. I suspect he is getting 11% and giving the
advisor 4%. I told him to get an online account of some sort, Angie uses
Vanguard, I have E-Trade but I suspect it doesn't really matter as long as its
one of the big companies. Buy an ET Index Fund and enjoy not sharing your
returns with anybody else...

liquidate investments.
I literally had near-zero investments until I retired from the military in
1994 and got a private sector job.  After that I maxed out IRA (preferably

military (i.e., having no choice when I sold) my average gain was modest
until my last house which I owned for 15 years and sold at a time of my
choosing when I fully retired.
I got clobbered in several market dives but only compared to those that
cashed-out at the peak; the markets always came back.  I always used mutual
funds (vs individual stocks) from reputable companies like Vanguard or
Fidelity.  After selecting an asset mix, look for the low fees; fees will
eat up your gains.
Especially in retirement, cash outgo is at least as important as cash
income.  A low-fixed-cost retirement home/location may be the most important
factor (e.g. low taxes, insurance, and house payment,-preferably zero) in
the long term.  It should go without saying but you should be debt-free well
before retirement.

Re: [MBZ] question for young investor

2021-01-02 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
I'll offer my two cents. I am retired.
My adequate net worth came from three sources: real estate (my personal
homes), IRA/401K investment, and military pension/social security. I
mention the last two only because I can live on them without needing to
liquidate investments.
I literally had near-zero investments until I retired from the military in
1994 and got a private sector job. After that I maxed out IRA (preferably
Roth) and 401K. I seldom lost money in real estate but being in the
military (i.e., having no choice when I sold) my average gain was modest
until my last house which I owned for 15 years and sold at a time of my
choosing when I fully retired.

As somebody else suggested, I think my Stanleys have the 'smart'

I'm correct, one could bypass the box and make it a straight cable
connection.
Of course that also gives you a very tiny arc welding machine, with the
added bonus of potential lithium battery explosion.

Maybe put a 30A fuse in one of the leads in place of the safety box?

Some of them have a 12v port for charging cell phones and such, maybe that
isn't so "smart".

" KP200 jump pack comes with a smart clamp that prevents you from improper

These jump packs that are 'smart' need to be connected to a battery before
they'll provide any power, so forget about using one to power a seat or
electric window at the junkyard, unless you also lug along a weak battery.

I bought one of these at Costco a few years ago, thinking that I could use
it at the pick-n-pull for just what you're talking about, but the 'smart'
part of it prevents me from using it this way.  It wants to be connected to
a weak battery.  I don't know if it needs to sense voltage of 12v or less,
or some amount of current drain (like it was charging up a weak battery).

My CTEK smart charger will not engage unless it senses some

It immediately restarted with the new/empty filter and the idle knob

Re: [MBZ] 2011 GL350 Bluetec, doesn't start, $7500

2021-01-02 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Put the scanner on it, see if there are any codes.  Or just see if
getting power at the starter relay in the fuse box which will indicate
if the ignition switch is sending electrons.  Then jumper the relay
contacts to see if the starter spins with key in pos2. that was the
problem on the $675ML500, I could get it started by jumpering the
relay.  I rigged up a pushbutton momentary switch on the relay pins to
start it before I got the new ignition switch.

I'm not entirely sure how these work being newer but I am guessing it is
probably a similar system/circuit

Re: [MBZ] How to remove seats with no power

2021-01-02 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
They will start a 617 or 603 etc as long as there is a battery in it.  I
tried starting a 603 with nothing but the jump pack hooked up.  That
will melt it.  I sent a message to them and they sent me a new one.  I
am now looking for the charger for it.  I did go ahead and order this
one as I am planning a trip to the pnp and would like to pull some power
seats.

I thought you were the first guy to tell the lists that the book sized
packs would actually start a 617. I bought a couple of tiny Stanley
packs on clearance at World of Walton 2 years ago. They need to see some
voltage to determine that they're hooked up properly before they'll send
power out. Mine won't start a car without some help from the car's
battery, unless it's a 4 cyl in warm weather or with synthetic oil, but
for $11 each I'm not complaining. When the Saturn (when it had a Delco
battery with a weak cell) barely started at -13 and didn't start at -18
the next day, the Stanley pack got it going. I replaced the battery last
December, knowing it didn't have another winter left in it.

Now I keep one on a shelf by the lawn mower, as I'd rather jump start
the thing twice a month than pay $80 for a new motorcycle battery.
Mowers that take mower batteries (or have room for a car battery like an
old Graveley or Cub Cadet) are preferable to mowers that take motorcycle
batteries.

Only surprise was the side that had the broken strut, I should have

Was the strut broken or the top mount bearing?
Anyway, you discovered one of the situations in which a quick strut kit

That could be tempting if indeed it is just the starter. I wonder what the
symptoms are. Might be just the ignition switch, was $25 part on the 05 ML

Re: [MBZ] OT focus front struts

2021-01-02 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I had a 2006 Ford Focus wagon for basic cheap transportation when I returned to
Florida in 2011. Excellent commodity car, very reliable and pretty cheap and
easy to maintain.

Glad it worked out well for you. Undercarriage work on northern cars is never
fun, no matter what it is.
