[MBZ] 2007 R320 CDI - 227k miles - $4,500

2021-06-28 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Not an insane price. Maybe bargain down some due to the miles. Better pics and
details would have been nice.

Re: [MBZ] AC work this past weekend

2021-06-28 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
As I recall, I used Cliplight on my home heat pump when I had a leaky
evaporator. Then it ran fine during summer but the leak gradually grew worse
during heating season (much higher pressure). I was impressed by how well it
worked. If my 126 evaporator leaked I'd use that as long as possible vs
pulling the evaporator. I plan to get that SD back on the road soon, meaning
AC will be required.

Say what you will, but I’ve had ClipLight Super Seal fix leaks in AC systems on
cars here in Florida, and they’ve lasted 2-4 years or more. Only stuff I would
consider using. That’s even for nasty ones like W140 evaporator leaks.

The other thing you have to deal with is the porosity of the original hoses, as
they weren’t barrier style hoses. That’s the cause for the annual “top off”
that many older systems often need.

I had a 1982 300SD I put almost 200k on over a four year period. When I got it
I put barrier style hoses on it and completely rebuilt the system, everything
but a new evaporator. In the four years I owned it I put exactly six ounces of
refrigerant (R-134a) into the system, and that was more as a precaution than a
need. It made ice cubes in the hottest weather.

I know I did a complete set and they were Bosch. Later on I was told that

Yes as long as you aren't expecting miracles. I had my home HVAC guy use some
leak sealer on my system that required a recharge every other summer. It worked
for a few more years but eventually I had to replace the evaporator which was
20 years old.

I don't know the brand names. Dan mentioned ClipLight also so I would go with
that.

Ah, well there's been at least two glow plug jobs recently then, so that's
good, probably won't have any stuck glow plugs.

Agree, but if you can get through another season or two without pulling the

I think cliplight is the brand name?

Re: [MBZ] AC work this past weekend

2021-06-28 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
I think Pierre has an opinion on that, you can probably guess.

His advice was too make sure you got the proper manifold o-rings for the GM
compressor, they have some metal in them.

I think you can get standard GM compressor and flip the rear cap around to make
the oil flow correct for the upside down install in the Benz, save a few
bennies?  There is some trick to using those old compressors.

The nice thing about these Denso compressors, 10PA-15, is the only

Re: [MBZ] AC work this past weekend

2021-06-28 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes

Maybe I'll trade you some AC work for part of the cost for one of your MLs,
you've got too many you know.

2021-06-28 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
Maybe I should follow your lead and buy some jalopy from Hoovie?

The AC was not working and I knew that going into the deal.

But now that you mention it, one of the glow plugs has died, so I need to do
that job now.  Dan's son or the previous owner had just paid for that job,
there was a receipt with the car, but I'll bet the garage that did that used
some cheap brand of plugs.

Re: [MBZ] AC work this past weekend

2021-06-28 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
I've always been told they are a bandaid at best. Permanent repair of a leak
will require replacing the leaking part(s) (and even that is not really
permanent. All AC systems eventually leak).

That said, some products are probably better than others, and may slow or stop
a small leak for a while.

washer fluid tank and loosening the serpentine belt, I had easy access from
above to get all four bolts loose, remove the manifold connection, and also
the electrical connection on top of the compressor.

And then OCD takes over, and I spent about 5 hours cleaning off the
compressor, carefully opening it up, carefully taking it completely apart
and replacing every seal and o-ring, and using the proper PAG-46 oil
filling it back up with oil. There was some nastiness on the valve plates,
kind of burned looking, like maybe the compressor was run low on oil or
something. If this thing dies, I'll have to spring for a new compressor I
guess. Rebuilt two other compressors and never saw anything like this.

The nice thing about these Denso compressors, 10PA-15, is the only special
tool required is a belt wrench or a chain wrench to hold the clutch while
you loosen the front nut, and then a shaft seal sleave to cover the
compressor shaft splines as you press the front case back on with the new
shaft seal.

Popped that back in, replaced the filter/dryer, then vacuum and fill the
system up. Took me about 8 hours all together, but ICE COLD AC is now back.

Only weird thing is that the recirculation function doesn't work. Press
the button and the light comes on while you hold the button down, but as
soon as you let go, the light goes out. Not able to troubleshoot that yet,
could be a bad switch I suppose or might be the PBU.

[MBZ] AC work this past weekend

2021-06-28 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Finally got hot enough for me to decide to fix the AC in the '95 E300 I
bought from Dan a couple years ago. Took all of an hour, if that, to get
the compressor out (front seal was leaking). After removing the wiper
washer fluid tank and loosening the serpentine belt, I had easy access from
above to get all four bolts loose, remove the manifold connection, and also
the electrical connection on top of the compressor.

Re: [MBZ] 642 slow crank

2021-06-28 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Well if the battery is charged and passes a load test, that leaves the
connections to the starter and the starter itself. Check that all the
connections are clean and bright and tight, don't forget the ground strap
between engine (or transmission) and the body.

On SWMBO's '96 Infiniti, it started cranking over slow and not starting.
Turned out that the starter is grounded via the bolts to the transmission,
and it is very common to get corrosion between the trans and the engine
block. The engine block is grounded to the body. I bought a few generic
battery cables, pre-made with ends already crimped on, and added more
ground cables from the starter to the engine block and then from the block
to the point on the body where the battery is grounded. About $15 in parts
and a couple hours later and that starter is REALLY fast and starts the car
with no problems.

IMO wipers and headlights are critical safety devices and should be fused
individually with no other loads on the circuit, and direct switching (maybe
via a relay but nothing electronic on a common bus). I had a Dodge minivan with
an electrical issue where ALL the accessories (wipers included) would cut out
randomly, and it put me in a dangerous situation more than once.

[MBZ] 642 slow crank

2021-06-28 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Driving around with the wife today in the hoovie GL. Seems like when cold it
cranks over slower than it should like it would with a low battery. Did have
that battery drain problem if sitting for a week won’t start. Truck is at
operating temp and when you come out from a store to start it, seems like it
turns over even slower than when cold. Can’t be a low battery problem because
battery would be charged, and voltage while running is fine. Battery is new and
terminals look fine. I suppose I can check the connections at the starter but
is this a sign starter is getting weak?

Re: [MBZ] Shop/garage LED lights

2021-06-28 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
I bought a smart charger (BT-C3400) for these small (aa, AAA, 18650)
batteries which can test recharge/discharge to measure capacity. It does
NiCD and NiMH as well as Li-ion.
I found the cheap Chinese Li-ion batteries had poor (way below spec)
capacity that deteriorated with each recharge. For example, an Ultrafire
18650, with a label capacity of 9800 mAh actually delivered only 260, 214,
and 161 mAh on three consecutive charge/discharge cycles.
On the other hand, I bought some unmarked AA-size (14500) Japanese SANYO
batteries (https://www.ebay.com/itm/233176228234). They are nominally 800
mAh and delivered 81x mAh on several successive recharge cycles.
Nearly all (fresh) alkaline batteries are close in performance, in my
experience. But beware cheap Chinese Li-ion rechargeables, they'll just end
up your junk drawer.

I needed some rechargeable AAAs and D cells and was shocked at the cost -
even on ebay. Must be the price inflation for Li.

I managed to find some 12v replacements for the halogen recessed lights in our
kitchen. The light quality is much better, they use 1/5th of the power and
hopefully will last much longer. Those halogen bulbs were only good for 2-3
years each and are a real pain to replace.

Indoor bulbs I have bought from Lowes. GE or Feit are the brands I've seen.
Just had to replace one in the laundry room the other day as it had developed a

Bathroom has clear glass globe lights, I recently bought some GE LEDs to
replace those ($16 for 4 bulbs). They look more like incandescents, the LEDs
are in thin thread-like arrangements that look more like indandescent
filaments. We'll see how those hold up. They do kick off MUCH less heat than
the incandescent bulbs, which is something.

It depends on which ones you buy. Surprisingly the Cree units I bought early
on (about 10 years ago) have had a poor lifespan. As you say the controllers
give up. Since then I've been buying Sylvania and had zero failures.
National Grid recently had a deal, 20 bulbs for $10 with free shipping. Other
than taking 4 weeks to arrive it seems like a pretty good deal. They had some
nice candelabra bulbs with full size bases that fit our ceiling fans. I'd had
trouble getting that style bulb with the big base.
Most of the rest of the bulbs are going into the house up north which is full
of 100w incandescent bulbs. Oh, one of the 100w equivalent should go into the
garage to replace the last CFL. I'm amazed that one has survived, it really
suffers in the cold.

2021-06-28 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
I won't touch a CFL anymore, except to use up the box of spares the
power company sent me a few times.

My favorite bulbs are the 40W-equivalent exposed 'filament' lamps,
by Philips. No visible power supply, it's encased in the screw base.
The envelope is helium-filled, because helium is an excellent heat
conductor. I've had them in the outdoor fixtures for over two years
now, and in the interior stairway lights. I've only lost one, apparently
they don't like to be submerged! (Rain blew in a weird direction during
a torrential storm, and filled the globe over the entryway. Probably
ruined the power supply.)

These bulbs care not about extreme cold, and run from dusk to 11:30
every day. (The outside ones.)

Mine are primarily GEs from Lowe’s. I have some big globes I used to replace
similar incandescents in our guest bath. Big and clunky, but put out more light
and far, far less heat. They’re now used in a new fixture that inverts them, so
it will be interesting to see how that might affect them.

One place I’ve found LEDs to be significantly better is in the underside light
on my microwave. On microwaves that are mounted over a stove the work lights
they offer are typically 40W “appliance” bulbs that are really weak when it
comes to illumination. I bought a “corncob” style 40W equivalent for our new
microwave, and it makes a major difference on the amount of light that shines
on the stove top.

Maybe it’s the quality of the lamps you’re buying?

I buy only name brand, like GE, and I’ve got a house full of them that are at
least a couple years old or more. Have yet to replace one.

I did have to replace one in an outside fixture, but it’s on roughly 8-12 hours
a day and it’s in an inverted position, which I suspect might have something to
do with the failure, not to mention the temperature and climate extremes it’s
exposed to.

I gladly use LEDs over CFLs, as I hate having to wait for them to “warm up”.

2021-06-28 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
I have not experienced the LED lights lasting longer. Maybe the LEDs themselves
do, but there are electronics to convert the 120VAC line supply to whatever the
LED needs and that seems to be the weak point. I am replacing LED bulbs (and
CFLs before that) about as often as I did incandescents.

Looks reasonalby nice but has some right-side dings.  Throw the scanner
on it and see if it is CP issues.  I'd go $800, spend an afternoon and
$150 for a new CP and fluid/filter and flip it for $2k.  I got the 99 in
better shape for $600, new CP, I need to sell that thing now.

With basically all the attention paid to the E55 AMG when talking about the
W210 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, I think sometimes we forget that there was another
V8 in the family. Well, technically two V8s with the aging M119 in the E420 and
the new kid on the block M113 with the facelift E430. Today, we have one of the
best early E420s I think I’ve come across in a long time, and even better, it
is painted in Viola Metallic. This won’t last long.

Wow. What a spec on this one. This was well before any E55 was even announced
for the US-market, so if you wanted a V8 E-Class in late-1996 and early-1997,
this was it. A major factor on this one is obviously the Viola Metallic paint,
and given how many of these were silver/tan/grey/black/white, this one is a
breath of fresh air. I know not everyone can do purple cars, but I am all for
it. Add in just over 57,000 miles, and this one looks like a winner to me.

The Buy It Now price tag of $9,000 seems reasonable given how the market has
been, but makes me think twice considering I’ve purchased two E55s for less
than that. Still, I think this is an awesome buy and priced reasonable, so it
wouldn’t surprise me if it sells fairly soon, if not already sold. Grab it
while you can, but I don’t think there is another like it.

At least they’ve rebuilt the brakes. That’s easily $3k-$5k of parts and labour.

You do know that all Rolls Royce come equipped with an engine driven
vacuum pump that only connects to your bank accounts. Apparently, because
it is a Rolls Royce, the vacuum pump does indeed continue to "Run While

[MBZ] buy my ratty turd Mercedes Benz - $6,000 (summerville)

The sound of CL desperation...

I'd prefer to trade rather than sell my 1997 Mercedes Benz S320 for a
Mercedes Diesel of equal value.
My car is in very good condition but shows the wear of being as old as
it is.
The mileage is 256K which is relatively low when figured to less than
11000 each year since purchase. Look some of the pictures over to get a
better feel for this car. It is a 6 cylinder (not a gas guzzler at all
but does burn only PREMIUM/Hi Test fuel). The MICHELINS have about 10K
miles on them

I ordered some oil for Angie's car the week before last hoping to change it
the weekend before last. FCPEuro was the cheapest but I figured it'd take
awhile. IDParts was $5 more expensive but their cheap shipping ($5) is usually
overnight since they're only about 70 miles away.
Buggers didn't ship the oil until the following Monday. It arrived on Tuesday

Got messages this morning it’s on a fedex truck for delivery today, shipped out
of Milford CT yesterday. Free 2-day shipping, almost as good as Amazon Prime
which delivered a fluid pump yesterday evening late after ordering it Thursday
too.

Learnings:  Don’t pay for expedited shipping.

Looks like I can try to get the $1200ML500 sorted tomorrow, see if I can get it
transmitting properly. The E I gotta send off for a new conductor plate ($$$)
and get that running.

If the ML works that’s a quick flip as I don’t particularly care for it.  Even
if not I’ll try to unload it.  The E is very nice and entertaining to drive
