Research:

Talking to Yourself Out Loud May Be a Sign of Higher Intelligence

While talking to yourself is often regarded a social no-no, possibly hinting at
psychological problems, new research suggests that point of view may need
revision. Scientists at Bangor University in the UK found talking to yourself
out loud is not only be helpful but may indicate a higher level of intelligence.

The study’s participants were given written instructions and told to either
read them out loud or silently. After measuring the concentration and how
participants performed on tasks, researchers concluded that people were more
concentrated and absorbed what they read better when doing so out loud.

As the study’s co-author and psychologist Dr. Paloma Mari-Beffa explains, the
benefits may be coming “from simply hearing oneself, as auditory commands seem
to be better controllers of behavior than written ones”.

Dr. Mari-Beffa sees speaking out loud as an extension of our inner silent talk,
which has been shown to help us organize thoughts, emotions and memories, as
well as plan actions.

She cites athletes, especially tennis players, who talk to themselves in
stressful moments. They use spoken self-instructions to help focus their minds
and motivate themselves to achieve specific goals.

The inventor Nikola Tesla was known to talk to himself during lighting storms.

The researcher adds that talking out loud could actually be “a sign of high
cognitive functioning”.

“The stereotype of the mad scientist talking to themselves, lost in their
own inner world, might reflect the reality of a genius who uses all the means
at their disposal to increase their brain power,” points out Dr. Mari-Beffa.

The experiment in the study was performed on a relatively small sample of 28
participants but previous studies also indicated that talking to oneself had
cognitive benefits, like helping find objects quicker.

You can read the study “The impact of verbal instructions on goal-directed
behaviour” here.

My cabriolet's front bumper is broken up along the bottom edge. The impact
strip part is fine, I need the rest of the bumper shell. Do you know that
the price is for a new shell, minus the impact strip?

I've been watching the local pick-n-pull places and nothing's come up.
Just realized I should call a couple of the indie MB garages that keep
parts cars and see if they've got one. Guy on Benzworld is parting a sedan
in MN, shipping alone will be about $50-60, so I'll probably offer him $100
to ship the bumper.

Re: [MBZ] Lt Don Wonko 240d

2018-03-18 Thread Fred Moir via Mercedes
Kaleb.

The "toaster racks" between old style series plugs are air cooled resistors
there to drop the voltage across each plug to about a volt each, grounded at
the end to complete the circuit.

With the pencil type plugs each has its' own wire and a full 12 volts, no
toaster racks.

If you want to use one wire on pencil type plugs, a short thick wire must go
between each of the 4 plugs directly, no racks and NO ground at the end, (or
you will ground the complete circuit.)

VW used a thick-ish copper strap to connect all pencil style GP's. One end to
power.

Remember that you are talking up to 80 amps on 4 cold plugs. All parts of the
circuit, on a single wire system, must be capable of passing up to 80 amps
safely.

Feel free to be confused and blame me.

The later systems use one wire per plug from the controller.

At 12 volts, the volts-drop-per-meter is significant on a single wire setup,
unless you use really thick wire.

YMMV.

After messing with it off and on for 2-3 days if finally roared to life with a
huge puff of diesel smoke. The original loop plugs were updated to the pencil
style with the main power wire coming in and jumper wires connecting each plug.
It just did not seem like the plugs were getting hot enough to me. With the
plugs running it measured 11.x volts at the plug closest to the firewall and
down to 10.x and the front one. It just doesn’t seem like the plugs are getting
enough juice to me. I have cranked on it till battery ran down several times
and it seemed like maybe 1 cylinder was trying to fire. I ended up just taking
a pair of jumper cables from the battery and hooking it to the
Front plug. After much cranking it finally started. Not really sure how these
loop plug conversions are supposed to work

A year or so ago I knocked a lantern off its peg, it landed exactly upside down
and pushed in the top of the tank (fount is the term we use). This is a brass
fount lantern so soft and even more likely to crush. I'd tried yanking on it in
various ways and got nowhere.

Today I went to the hardware store, bought a few fittings and a grease nipple.
I filled the fount with some of the wet ATF from the Pisten Bully (need to boil
it down...) put my cobbled fittings on top and filled that with more ATF, then
put the grease fitting into place and pumped in some grease.

The top started to push back out but it wasn't even so I took it outside and
used the torch to heat the low part, before my eyes the top pushed right up
into position, maybe not like brand new but good enough that once the collar is
in place you won't be able to tell anything had happened.

The picture is immediately after removing the dent, so the fount is still
pressurized.

I'm super pleased, this is a Coleman 236, 500 candlepower, Coleman Fuel, single
mantle, nickle plated brass fount. Fairly rare so I really wanted to fix it.

Guess I need to make video of the technique...

Another fix for something that isn’t broken.

If you use a genuine MB monovalve insert, they work just find. In fact,
the climate control works exceptionally well when repaired correctly. That
is, it requires no adjustment at all by the user.

I haven’t touched mine in weeks or months, except for pressing defrost a
few times.

It’s a shame these kits are installed when the effort would be better
spendt on just making it work as designed. The cars have run for 30-40
years with the original design, why change it now?

Yes, totally.
However, the same greed is rampant among the plebes. Which of us

Somewhere before we turned off to visit friends at Placid Lakes, we saw an huge

I only took my eyes off the road for a second and nearly hit a small pony.
('Twas a boar).

Much swerving and invective followed, and the haste to "get there faster" faded.

It may not have been as big as a moose, but at about 60 mph it would have

Subject: [MBZ] Motion for consideration: Strasfogel's Rule

Mr Chairman!

I move that this august body (known as OkieBenz) adopt the following rule:

WHEREAS The collective wisdom of this body is exceedingly good at
diagnosing all things Diesel MB, remotely and with little "on the ground"
information, and;

WHEREAS The frugal nature of this body is such that many members squirrel
away many things, including MB technical literature, new parts, used parts,
and even entire used cars (sometimes acres of used cars, visible by
satellite), and;

WHEREAS The generous nature of this body is such that said items that have
been squirreled away are typically exchanged for the cost of shipping or
maybe a little more, and;

WHEREAS The flip side of the human nature of frugality is too often an
ornery stubborn independence (dare I say prideful?) which is especially
exhibited in those members who ask lots of questions but then usually do
their own thing regardless of input from this body, often with the result
of spending more time and money and list bandwidth exploring options that
ultimately fail and lead to the original solution proposed weeks or months
earlier, and THEN considerable "I told you so" ensues, taking up more list
bandwidth, which some members find quite entertaining and others find
rather a waste and others probably think even less of the whole sad
situation;

THEREFORE when Mr. Strasfogel asks more than three questions about a fault
with any MB automobile, and the collective wisdom of OkieBenz has narrowed
the possible root cause(s) of said fault, and said fault could be remedied
with a serviceable used part(s) or extra new part(s) that a member has in
store (like a block heater cord, one of my favorite things to harvest from
the Knackers), then the member may voluntarily and freely ship or deliver
the part(s) to Mr. Strasfogel, and then either openly or anonymously
announce to OkieBenz that the part(s) are en-route, and Mr. Strasfogel
shall then be invited to report on the success or failure of this
assistance.

Do I hear a second?

Put foam insulation on pipes and filled the hard to access void with foam. This
bloody foam sticks to everything, fingers, coat, hat, pipes, the can itself, but
the darn stuff will not stick to brick or wood without much encouragement,
mostly verbal!

Sounds like your car has lost fuel prime.

A vigorous and prolonged action at the primer pump should help it start.

A small air leak in the rubber/cloth line at the tank will allow the fuel to
return to the tank when parked facing uphill, though it may not leak enough
fuel to be noticeable.

The olde style primer pumps tended to leak air as they aged (25+ years?) , a
new style black capped one fixes that.

Good luck and don't stay out in the cold too long.

Coyote could become the wolf of the East CoastPublished: Friday, November
17, 2017

Coyotes might need to become the "wolves" of the East Coast to survive.

Coyotes in the East are actually a mix of coyote, wolf and dog, which is
why they tend to be bigger than their counterparts in the West.

The carnivores has expanded their territory in the past 80 years, and their
wolflike traits are helping them thrive on the East Coast, according to
scientists.

But humans will have to coexist with these increasingly wolflike creatures,
researchers said.

"We now have a novel, large canid to take over that new role," said Robert
Crabtree, chief scientist of the Yellowstone Ecological Research Center.
"The right size is going to be selected for us by biological evolution
itself."

The coyotes might become more effective predators, which could be bad news
for deer. Ultimately, it could mean that the coyote becomes the top
predator on the East Coast (Patrick Whittle, Associated Press
,
Nov. 17).

The B has had the carb/intake/exhaust parts upgraded, so it may be quicker than
stock.

Looks like Dan is correct, submarine.

One of the least desirable MGs there is.

That car submarined under the bumper of a large car or SUV. That’s what caused
the damage.

[MBZ] Batteries

2017-10-19 Thread Fred Moir via Mercedes
Alles.

My '85 TD needed a new battery and PEP Boys had a Group 49 Bosch on promo, so I
bought one. ($132.74 - $50 gift card and $5 coupon).

The H8 (Autozone) that was in there did not quite fit, the 49 however fits like
it was made for it. (Maybe it was).

YMMV

Today I got all the dash and interior put back together. AC still needs to be
emptied of the N2 charge and then charged with R134. Filled the radiator with
plain water, connected the battery, and started her up! All systems go except
AC.

No extra fasteners left over!
