Re: [MBZ] Ignition Switch

2007-11-06 Thread P. D. Ferguson
Since I jumpered it, it has been working normally, so I cannot
move the shifter around to check the neutral switch. I rechecked the wiring
diagram and you are correct, the glow plug circuitry gets power from both
the run and start terminals of the ign switch; the run connection does not
go through the neutral switch, but the start connection does. It is going
to storage toorrow so I will revisit it in the spring.

No. Glow plugs work in any gear. Did you hold the key with one hand

[MBZ] Ignition Switch

2007-11-05 Thread P. D. Ferguson
So just as I was about to put my 1983 300TD in storage for
the winter, the ignition switch will not energize the starter motor, but
will energize the glow plug circuitry. I can operate the starter motor
using the 30 and 50 jumper terminals under the hood. Since the glow plug
circuitry works, does that eliminate the neutral switch as the culprit and
limit it to the ignition switch?

One plus for buying the correct grease from MB ius it comes in a tube
with the correct amount for 2 wheels - fold the tube in half and cut it

I assume the grease Rusty sells are packaged the same way -

Actually, I tried to order the grease from Rusty at the

[MBZ] Oops!

2007-06-14 Thread P. D. Ferguson
So after almost 40 years of dieseling, I inadvertently
dispensed about 2.9 gallons of 93 octane unleaded(sans ethanol) into my 1983
300TD, which has an 18.5 gallon fuel tank. After realizing my mistake, I
topped the tank off with diesel, so I now have about 15% unleaded in the
tank.
I drove the car home from the station and it is sitting in my
garage--it seemed to run fine in the 12 mile trip. I am wondering what
damage I might do by using the fuel mixture--I could use up half the tank
and then top it off to further dilute the remainder. I could also drain
the tank, which would not be very entertaining.
Anybody got any experience in burning gasoline mixtures in
their Benz?

Re: [MBZ] Volvo diesel

2006-11-26 Thread P. D. Ferguson

I believe Volvo used a VW, or was it the Audi, 6 cylinder diesel which
I

have heard was not very bulletproof.

VW truck engine.

We got one of these for my wife to drive around 1984 or
1985--it was a six cylinder VW truck engine, may have been a direct
injection engine as it was noisy as hell in the winter and smoked like crazy
on cold startup--the neighbors did not like it. We kept it through the
first winter and got rid of it.

Re: [MBZ] How to remove tight lug bolts?

2006-09-24 Thread P. D. Ferguson

When I bought some WallyWorld tires for MrTaurus last winter, the tire guy
put a torque limiter bar on the impact wrench, then burped the lugs down
snug with an educated finger on the throttle, making the torque bar
superfluous.
He then got out a micrometer torque wrench, torqued all twenty lugs down
in

stages, handed the wrench to the porter and went for a drive around the
building. When he pulled back in, the porter went around the car with the
torque wrench again. Better treatment than my lugs had ever had at any
other

shop.

I have had two sets of TireRack-purchased tires mounted
at a relatively new Super WallyWorld($7.95 per tire lifetime balance) and
watched both times as the tech used a torque wrench to tighten the lugs--the
receipt includes a print out of the torque applied. I suspect that WWorld
must have had some unhappy experiences which resulted in this procedure.

[MBZ] Towing Question

2006-09-19 Thread P. D. Ferguson
There have been a few recent posts suggesting that
towing with the MB transmissions may cause them to overheat. I seem to
recall reading somewhere that the MB transmissions lock up when in fourth
gear such that the torque converter is no longer involved in the transfer
of power as it is it the first three gears. If that is the case(and I may
be wrong in my understanding), what is the source of the extra heat
generation when towing in fourth gear--wouldn't it be about the same as a
manual transmission?
In any event, I towed my dual sport motorcycle(about 500
lbs) and trailer(another 500 or so lbs) 3000 miles in August across the
plains, sometimes in 95 degree temps, with no apparent issues other than the
engine coolant getting up to the 105-110 mark a couple of times on long
hills. The M1 in the transmission remains clear and unburnt. The boost was
at around 10 psi most of the way and mileage dropped to 19-20 at 70 mph.
All in all a great Italian tune up.

Re: [MBZ] OM617 run-hot symptoms (another question)

2006-07-10 Thread P. D. Ferguson

You would be better to modify a thermostat to stay in the full open
position, and will find it useful when you do your coolant flushes.

I did this with an old stat just to use for flushing the
system with cold water by substituting a length of a nail for the brass
pin--closes off the bypass and opens flow to the radiator. Since I store
the car in the winter, I am wondering if I could leave the modified
stat(maybe come up with a better way of modifying it) in year round. Any
harm to running at lower temps and longer warm ups? More pollution?

[MBZ] 9 Blade Fan

2006-07-06 Thread P. D. Ferguson
Following up on my question of last week, I bought a 9 blade
radiator fan from Rusty for my 1983 300TD after he advised that it should
fit the stock visco clutch--it did. My unscientific tests of its cooling
effectiveness included chugging around town with the ac on, and going up my
favorite Italian tune up hill, I90 climbing west out of the Mississippi
River Valley. Around town, the temp guage stayed slightly below
90--previously, it would have been at 90; and on the Italian tune up, the
temp maxed out slightly below 100(ac on) whereas it usually would slightly
top 100 on that run. So I think it is a little better for cooling
effectiveness.
I have not so good hearing(too much hunting) so the fan
noise has never been an issue with me--I did compare operation of the clutch
when cold and again at the top of the hill and could hear more air blowing
when hot, so I think the clutch is still working as intended.

It's quieter. The SDL was forcibly upgraded when it got its new clutch.
(As the old metal-fan rated clutch was NLA.) It's supposed to cool
better,
too. It has asymmetrical blade spacing so that it doesn't howl as much.
