Re: [MBZ] 97 E300

2020-01-29 Thread Clay via Mercedes
Ah,

Siding of choice in ANC seems to be T1-11. They slap the homes together during
the summer. No joke. From June to September it is a mad scramble to toss up
as many of the turds as possible. Last summer may have been a bit off, as
there was much post earthquake repair going on, but the houses sprout up out of
cut rate california house plan catalogues and there seem to be no changes made
in specifications to account for being in the sub arctic. On slab, at grade,
2x4 framing, lowest cost options you could scrounge from Home Despot. Maybe
you get a better grade of appliance to make up for the snap together flooring,
vacu-form counters, and bargain plumbing fixtures.

I would posit that if you really want a decent home up here, you begin mapping
the whole thing out two or three years in advance. Do extensive geotech work
while you get the wish list hashed out. Second year is all ground work,
excavation, connections to power, water, sewer and building the
basement/foundation work with any solar/back up energy/geothermal installation.
Maybe a person puts main floor trusses and basic earthquake
securement/strapping. Nail down all the product required to finish the project
and have it on the first barge up for the season so it is in place as soon as
the weather permits framing to begin. Have one of the vinyl sheeted storage
structures on site to hold it so there is no waiting around.

SWMBA still thinks in terms of living in the real USA. Figures she can just go
to the local big box and have something delivered in a few days. Turns out her
washing machine will take a month to come up. Standard LG front loader, but
there was only one of that model in ANC and it was black (racist). She has
been looking at replacement for the fireplace hearth since April. Looks like
she will have to pay to ship a whole 8x10 slab of granite up, then she only
needs pay for the section she uses. At three times the sqft rate of down south.

It is not the miners who get rich, it is the folks servicing the miners making
millions.

Re: [MBZ] 97 E300

2020-01-29 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
My best friend passed away unexpectedly just after Xmas, leaving his
affairs in flux. His brother drove down to sort things out in his condo.
First thing he learned was that both sets of car keys and the brother's
wallet were MIA. We have no idea where they went - the front door was
always unlocked so it could have been anyone (23rd floor in a secure
building)

Mercedes content: The dealer quickly provided a replacement key for the
2008 E55 AMG sedan (25 k miles). The key worked so that was settled.

The BMW dealer was very unhelpful in getting the 2005 station wagon up and
running. After a week they grudgingly sold the brother a replacement key,
which opened the door but would not start the ca (the car was running
perfectly previously). They refused to provide a tech to make a house call
or even to talk through the issues, so the car is being towed to the
dealership.

She told me they did the conversion out west somewhere, Oregon or
Washington if I recall.  No rust on it, body was good, interior was good
though it had sheepskins on the front seats so I didn't pull those
back.  It really just needs and engine transplant and be good to go
after removing all the veggie nonsense.  This is not a turbo engine.

She had a new front bumper in the garage too she was gonna throw in.  I
could use that on the smashed $500E300.  Hubbie packed on her and moved
to Arkiesaw and took the title which he can't find now.  Her boy at CCU
had the key for some reason and she texted him to send it back.  Would
need that to move it, it's in one of those new Nexton vinyl villages
with an alley in back of the house/garage.

allowing you to have a new car. The winter take a pretty good toll on cars

SWMBA house has that blah grey tone interior paint. I seem to recall that in
SEA you could take your the unused portion of paint in the can to the recycle
depot/hazard waste yard for recycle/remix. All the discards got magically
enhanced into a large mixer (somebody must have had a clue what they were
looking to end up with) and then dispensed into 5 gallon buckets for quick and
dirty application to walls. Sold the stuff at dollar store prices. I never
used it, but did supply them with many buckets of paint. I am at a loss for
how they mixed up the pumpkin spice flavor cans I donated.

Either way, I think the end product was on the greyish (zombie flesh?) tone or
weak chocolate milk.

Re: [MBZ] 97 E300

2020-01-27 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Some little bowtie designer snot at montvale or some bowtie marketing
snot at montvale told the MBUSA suits that was the appropriate colors
for the time.   Like every house for sale or redone by a designer has
any color you want as long as it is GRAY   DULL, DRAB, COLORLESS GRAY!
That is what the hipsters are buying (because the same designers (and
better homes & Gardens, etc) told them everything in the house has to be
GRAY!  Just went by a newly redone Tar-jay store on Sat.  EVERYTHING is
GRAY!!! Even the red circles of their logo are DULL, DRAB, COLORLESS
GRAY! Fuglyy!!!   but is what sells.   The BH circuit has
not yest discovered that we are in the 4th year of a new era, and the
DULL, DRAB, COLORLESS GRAY is OUT!   I am starting to see more brand x
cars in living colors.  That is a good sign.

#1 daughter just had me look at pictures of the "ideal" house they
found.  Guess what!  EVERY surface inside the whole house is DULL, DRAB,
COLORLESS GRAY!   Whatver

Yeah if I got it I’d put the turbo engine in it, I bet it’s completely
buggered.

It’s gray with a beige interior though. Fugly. What were they thinking?

I went to look at this dead car. Looked nice except for hood clear coat was

gauge and a big switch that says VEG OIL. WTF.

I look in the trunk and there’s a tank and plumbing, heating lines or
something. I ask the woman she says they added the veg oil thing in like 2005.
Collected and filtered restaurant oil and used that. I suggested this was why
the car was dead. She said some mech replaced the injectors but it’s still no
go. I suggested this was why the engine was dead, maybe the injection pump or
whatever. It's dead, Jim.

I offered $300 thinking I could put the smashed car engine in this car and have
another nice E300. It’s not a turbo and the veg stuff would have to go so I
guess that would be some challenge.

She said someone else was coming to look at it so declined my offer but has my

[MBZ] 97 E300 bucking like a bronco

2016-09-07 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
So after being off the road for many months due to replacing glow plugs,
all fuel lines etc under the manifold put it back together and was
getting check engine light for EGR. Finally broke down and spent $300
on a used one and put it on, cleared codes and it seemed fine, no more
code. Took it for a drive. Now has plenty of power (although much slower
than the 606 turbo I have been used to driving), but when trying to
maintain a steady speed it surges almost like a bucking bronco, even
with cruise set. Well crap, I go back to house, mess with a few things,
it still does it. I even rev up engine to about 2k and hold it and it
will do it. Its something with that stupid control pressure flap and
the EGR. I then discover the vacuum line from the manifold to the
pressure sensor has a small tear starting in it. I replaced that and
now it behaves and runs like it should. I guess I will call it ready
for duty. It;s amazing how that little detail caused all kinds of
problems. I am now wondering if the old EGR valve was fine, but then
again, it was setting codes and the new one does now.

[MBZ] 97 e300

2016-08-08 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
I finally pulled my 97 e300 out of the shop today after a long period of me
slowly replacing glow plugs, and all the fuel lines and seals under the
manifold. Took it for a drive today after being used to driving the 98 turbo.
Boy is it slow. Actually I am not sure if it's normal slow or if there is a
problem slow. I cleared the engine codes and had an egr code come back which I
thought was because I didn't have the crossover pipe completely sealed yet. I
cleared it again and had a check engine light come back on during the test
drive. I bets it's egr again and that may reduce power.

It's a big relay in the relay box passenger side, control a lot of stuff I
guess. I pulled mine out and took it apart and all the solder joints look ok,
plugged all the plugs back in and it seems to be fine, which I have read will
help for a while. Even with the glow light on it does not want to start. I did
have a lot of fuel under the car from sitting and had a piece of card board
under it and did see some new fuel on it. So it appears to be leaking from the
back of the shutoff valve. I need to replace all the lines and o rings. Maybe
all the fuel has leaked out and is hard to bleed because it still leaks.

That too but I've found by experimentation that rotational speed doesn't have a
whole lot to do with fuel usage in a diesel, not a direct link surely.

A 300D N/A gets worse economy than a 300D turbo while having less power. Diesel
engines benefit from the turbo.

So you're saying that a Diesel spinning at 3000 will not use any more
than one spinning at 2500?
Next question is why,if turbo Diesels are so efficient, did no one apart
from the US and Japan get early turbo Diesels. I can think of cost to
build and public acceptance as being a couple of factors, however
wouldn't have Hans the friendly Stuttgart taxi driver been happier with
a turbo 123 200D if it gets better mileage?

Re: [MBZ] 97 E300 Diesel snail model

2013-01-12 Thread Peter Frederick

Turbo diesels get better milage for two reasons:

Better volumetric efficiency (higher effective compression ratio)

Better gearing (engine turns slower, so you get better torque usage).

They also produce more power, so you use power less time while
accelerating, and you can get the same power from a smaller
displacement engine, although this is much less of an issue for
diesels than gassers since diesels aren't throttled and hence do not
suffer from the very low charge density problems gassers have.

The difference is not huge, probably only a couple mpg. Nicer to
drive the diesel, though. Diesel engines are fuel regulated, and you
can tell if you drive at 55 mph vs 75 mph -- my milage on the 603
drops from 30 plus for to and from work (max speed 60 mph) to around
29 at 70 and 28.5 if I drive 75. Faster than that, it drops to 27 or
so. More load means more fuel burned, and gearing doesn't have huge
effects here.

Yes. But the real difference is the turbo. By making use of
the exhaust heat to spin the turbine which force more air into
the engine, the efficiency increases. That is, there is less
waste heat, so more of the energy in the fuel goes to turning
the flywheel and less goes out the tail pipe.

Therefore, a turbo-supercharged engine can generate more power
_and_ use less fuel.
