You get a warning from the display to change the battery. My local dealers
will replace it gratis. It might hurt sales if there were a proliferation
of fancy Mercedes littering the interstates due to dead keyfobs.

With the GM version, the pocket transponder is continuously transmitting
(making it easy for a cruiser with a good dish antenna to harvest and
spoof). When the batteries (a pair of 2032s IIRC) die from the continual
RF transmission, you slide out the physical key, use it to pop the lid
off the door handle, and enter the car manually. Then you stick the fob
in the designated cupholder where a chipreader identifies it like a
proximity chip credit card.

And up through 2016, if a valet has a blank fob, he can use the original
fob and the cupholder to pair it to your car.
2017 and later you need two linked fobs in the cupholder to quickly link
another fob. If you only have one fob, you have to start the process,
hit the OK button after ten minutes, hit the OK button after ten more
minutes, and pair the new fob after ten more minutes. The idea being
it's difficult for a valet to hit the appropriate button at the right
times over a half hour period.

[MBZ] New Addition - 2008 ML550

2022-05-23 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Yup, another one…

Picked up a 2008 ML550 tonight. 040 black to match the new W211 E320, I guess.
Far more sophisticated than any MB I’ve driven to-date, lots of bells and
whistles. It has KeylessGo, which is nice, as well as a bunch of other things
I’ve yet to explore. Got it home in anticipation of getting it washed and moved
inside to start on the interior, but Mother Nature interfered with a typical
late afternoon Florida storm, so I had to relegate myself to the EPC and other
sources to take care of the “list ‘o’ parts” I needed to compile for the dealer.

Most things were cosmetic, like a new left side steering wheel switch and trim,
a latch for the center console, and some other little bits of trim and things.
One bummer that I had forgotten about was that the temporary spare was missing,
so I will probably swing by LKQ tomorrow when I go to fill it up (ouch!) and
see if they’ve still got the spare on the 2007 ML that’s in the yard.

It’s just about due for an oil change, which I’ll take care of tomorrow along
with whatever other filters it might need after inspecting them. It’s going to
need a headliner, but that’s a job for my upholstery guy in a month or so.

It’s a lot of fun to drive and quite comfortable, nothing like the harsh ride
of the W163 (my W164 does have solid suspension, not air.) It’s still
definitely truck-like, but nowhere near as much as the W163, I think. Much
better drink holders than the W211, too. Now I know I can’t let Mrs. Dan drive
this thing…

Pictures in the morning once I’ve cleaned it up.

It looked like part of the front bumper was gone under the right corner. I
had the same thing happen reversing across a pavement edge.

I think the headliner is such a big item in terms of the value of the car.

These are really good machines. The m119 is just great, electronics aside.
My mechanic had a 400e in with the motor out recently. Loss of oil pressure
caused the timing chain to skip. The owner was having them rebuild the
motor. Mind you it had over 250k on the clock. The guy had no intention of
getting rid of the car.

Front bumper is OE but may need to be freshened up. According to the car’s
history, it’s been pranged in the front twice and stolen once. All with the
original owner. The first front end wreck was within a few hundred miles of
delivery! Dealer appears to have done the work on both instances. No stickers
on the radiator support = giveaway there’s been front end damage in it’s past.

Not only has factory CD changer but original Becker and they both work. This
setup is easily modified for an auxiliary input as well.

With only 113k on the clock the back end might not be that bad. We’ll see.

Engine harness was replaced by Mercedes some years ago. Lower harness and ETA
not that I know of, but they’re probably OK.

Yes, it has ASR.

Headliner will need replacement. My headliner guy will do it for under $200 as
a carry in. I need the headliner on the SL500 redone, too, so I’ll take both in
at the same time.

Yeah, I’ll be doing that. Saves the lenses if they’re not in bad shape to start
with.

Should be a fun project. I’m looking forward to it.

Re: [MBZ] New Addition to Dan's Acres

2020-04-24 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
That is a good deal. Congrats.

The front bumper cover is about 700 from mercedes. I have one of the cheap
ones from Latvia sitting around if I would sell cheap.

Dont back into anything. The rear impact strip is nla and no aftermarket
parts here that I could find.

Factory CD changer is mint! I may need to find one. I wonder if it only
works with a Becker head unit.

They all need the fcp euro rear suspension overhaul.

Did they do the harnesses, or are you going to make one?

16" SL wheels are a nice upgrade.

160mph on 275hp?

Does it have ASR?

How is the headliner?

Amazon clear film on the headlights looks super.

Re: [MBZ] New Addition to Dan's Acres

2020-04-24 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
In comparison, the 275k 1993 400E I had would do 130 mph before I chickened
out, with some pedal still left. This one will probably go just as fast, or up
to 160 mph if it’s got the later brain box in it. The last of these they raised
the limiter to 160 mph from something like 135 mph or thereabouts.

Slightly better. 4.2 liters of displacement versus 4.0. Facelift model, (94-95)
so the last and best of the design and enhancements to the W124 chassis.

Just loaded on the truck about 30 minutes ago. Should be here on Sunday or

[MBZ] New Addition to Dan's Acres

2020-04-24 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Bought a 1995 E420 from a guy in Columbus, OH today. Shipper is picking it up
this afternoon/evening, should be here by Sunday or Monday.

Here are the details:

113k on the clock

Delivery (1995) to 2015 lived in South Florida
Seller bought it in 2015, took it to Columbus, OH
Kept in a heated garage, washed whenever there was snow or ice on the roads
Everything works, all original such as Becker radio, etc.
Has issue with brake booster according to owner, sounds more like a vacuum issue
Has intermittent ASR/ABS fault
Needs driver’s seat bottom cover (tears)
Owner says the paint on the roof is checkered, but I got some close up photos
from him and if it is, I can barely see it. Might be a Martha thing.
Two sets of wheels (snows and summer)

$1500 sale price

This deal came together so quickly it was scary. We were frantically trying to
find a way to transfer money around this afternoon after finding out the
shipper was on their way already. I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to get a
Hagerty policy issued before it got on the road, but that’s done, too.

More upon arrival. I’ll get it on the SDS and see what’s up with the ASR/ABS.
I’m convinced the brake booster issue he’s described is a cracked vacuum line.

My youngest is wasting his mother’s retirement funds at a liberal private
college. Thinks his degree will be in computers. He knows nothing about the
hardware and less about software. He does play computer games.

The level of difficulty his 200 level comp sci class achieves does not rival
the ASCII dot matrix picture code the children in 1979 were conjuring up. I am
fairly certain the current textbook is meant for coloring and coding is to be
done in crayons.

I had an ER visit years ago that was not covered by health insurance, ended
up with a few stitches in my thumb after I ripped off the thumbnail with a
sawz-all. The doctor's cost was about $800 and the ER / hospital charge
was another $1000 or so. Most painful event of my life, but the thumbnail
grew back beautifully.

When you get right down to it, society needs plumbers, mechanics, farmers,

Yeah, underemployed opera singer. Great baritone voice. Perfect for radio
and tv.

I love his story about the septic tank guy. They are putting one in a hole
or pumping it and Mike says what's the secret to your success and the guy,
who owns his business and is a multimillionaire, thinks for a minute and
says "everything I have is because I looked around at what everyone else
was doing, and did something else".

I think there is a hustle factor in all those successful entrepreneur guys
though, and some good people skills and street smarts. That is tough to
teach.

Be interested to compare notes on the 648. Mine is all factory ecu in a

Some kids are college material and some aren't. IMO, it's criminal to conn a

No, no shame at all. I was the same way when I was his age. This is a kid who
was never college bound and we never forced it. He will do well and probably be
making more than his younger brother, who has a college degree but is
underemployed. That being said, younger brother loves what he does and is doing
well, which I can’t fault him for. Not a lot of people out there who love their
work.

Re: [MBZ] New Addition

2019-09-28 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Good/smart kid who just hasn’t been able to find some direction in his life
until now. He’s almost done with his plumbing apprenticeship, and we want to do
everything we can to help him out so he can stay focused on finishing and
getting out into the working world. He’s done well and already has job offers,
which has him pretty stoked (and us, too!)

If I can afford to keep him in a reliable, safe and inexpensive to operate
vehicle, I will. I don’t want him worrying about getting back and forth to
school, I want him to be able to totally focus on his studies.

326k, three owners, dealer maintained up until 317k verified with the VMI.
Current owner bought the car as a non-runner, expecting the Black Death.
Found it was only a shorted wire on an injector harness. PO is a former MB
line mechanic from the UK that lives in the Orlando area now, a favourite
location for British expats. He replaced the injectors and seals anyway,
along with the alternator and motor mounts. I knew he was legit when I saw
the Star system on a cart in his garage...

 Snagged it for $2600.00.

It’s a former neighbor of Floyd and friends as well as others on the list.
It was purchased at the MB dealer in Charleston and maintained there and
at another dealer in Texas, where apparently the first owner had a home as
well. Then it came to Naples and lived there until a couple of years ago,
when it came to the Tampa area. It was from this owner that the current
 owner bought it.

Got sideswiped on the driver’s side some years back but the damages were
under $1000 according to the accident report. The molding on both left
side doors was replaced wth new, but no metalwork was done. There’s a
slight depression at the lower part of the leading edge of the rear door
about the size of my hand. Could be a candidate for the heat gun/canned
 air dent repair, we’ll see.

Got my interior upholstery guy getting me a new drive’s seat cover. Could
use a new steering wheel as the foam parts are breaking down as are the
 buttons for the telematics.

Picking it up on Sunday midday. Martha’ing will commence immediately upon
 arrival.

Anyone want a good deal on a 1995 W124 E300D that needs an evaporator?
Anyone got a NAV DVD for one of these? I would love to get the NAV working

Re: [MBZ] New Addition

2019-09-27 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Thanks, Kevin! That’s pretty much what I figured based on the maintenance
records. The VMI was 12 pages long - that’s huge and a contender for the
longest one I’ve ever seen, and the first time I’ve ever seen a reference to an
“F” service. The owner has a file folder about an inch and a half thick with
receipts from previous owners, too.

My upholstery guy in CA that has always come through for me is already on the
hunt for a “reconditioned” cover. If he can’t find one he can recondition the
one that’s on the car.

Found it was only a shorted wire on an injector harness. PO is a former MB

2015-08-07 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I don’t know if the OBDII thing had anything do do with the facelift in 1996,
as all of the information was already there - they just weren’t making it
accessible via the OBDII standards.

We haven’t topped off from the drive back from Mobile, but should be in the
next day or two. I’m interested to see what kind of mileage we got. I don’t
think 25 MPG is realistic, as I drove the 1998 S420 back from St. Louis and
only got around 23 MPG. It’s got to be better than the coupe, as it only got
around 16-17 MPG on a mixed driving cycle.

I’ll report back as soon as I know.

Given the choice I wanted 96 or later, but this was a really good deal and a
super nice car, so I compromised. The likelihood of finding something as nice
with a well documented past in a reasonable period of time was pretty slim
based on my earlier searches this year, so I went for it.

There are some tradeoffs, such as purely mechanical transmission (good) versus
distributor type ignition (not as good) for example.

Life is full of compromises.

Re: [MBZ] New Addition to the Driveway

2015-08-02 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Wherever I can part it.

I had considered trying to sell it on CL “as-is”, but between the need for work
and the salvage title, I doubt that I’ll get any takers. I would expect to
have to price it around $1000 or less or he bottom feeders wouldn’t be
interested. LKQ, the only recycler here in town, offered me $250 for it driven
to their doorstep. I don’t think so. Right now I’ve got commitments for about
$400 worth of parts I don’t need, and I haven’t even started to eBay anything.
Stuff like the rear parcel shelf and door cards are pretty much unobtainium for
these cars, so I expect those items to go pretty quick when I put them up.

I’ll sell the stuff I’ve got immediate commitments for, put other stuff on
eBay, and within a week the remains will go to a scrap dealer. I’ve got a
small storage unit I can put some things in for a little while while I wait for
them to sell. If they don’t go after a month or two, I’ll dump them.

A lot of the hard parts will fit the “new” S420, so I’ll hang on to some of
them. The coupe has a lot of things unique to the coupe, and those are the
things that are going on the various forums and possibly eBay.

Tires are nearly new and are getting swapped over to the 1997 S420, as it could
use new skins.

If there is anyone here who needs W140 parts, let me know. I would expect to
give dibs to anyone here for anything I’m not keeping.

driven to their doorstep. I don’t think so. Right now I’ve got commitments
for about $400 worth of parts I don’t need, and I haven’t even started to
eBay anything. Stuff like the rear parcel shelf and door cards are pretty
much unobtainium for these cars, so I expect those items to go pretty quick
 when I put them up.

I’ll sell the stuff I’ve got immediate commitments for, put other stuff on
eBay, and within a week the remains will go to a scrap dealer. I’ve got a
small storage unit I can put some things in for a little while while I wait
for them to sell. If they don’t go after a month or two, I’ll dump them.

A lot of the hard parts will fit the “new” S420, so I’ll hang on to some of

Working on the engine compartment right now. Dirty, but solid. The owner was
not a “car guy” so places where I would normally pay attention are a little
grungy.

It did pass the back seat test with flying colors, however. A total of $0.36
in change and nothing else! Not even the lone Cheeto. And I understand the
owner has at least one and possibly two boys. That’s a testament to
cleanliness, as I believe the soul of every car lives under the back seat. If
that’s clean, the car has been well cared for.

Otherwise, the interior is nice. He had the car detailed before I picked it
up, and it was pretty clean. There is a split in the seat back on the driver’s
seat, but I’m amazed there weren’t more with the perforated leather. It’s
almost as if it’s designed to tear.

I just clay barred the outside and will be putting some wax to it a little
later this afternoon. I’m jumping around as I do things to keep it interesting.

I just programmed all the convenience features, which don’t appear to ever have
been used. That’s where the seat and steering wheel move back when you shut
off the car, move into position based on the key being used, mirrors folding in
when locked, courtesy lights staying lit, etc. They were all at the default
settings.

Now that we've got the tree out of the side yard I’m going to have a

Not sure it would be worth the shipping. However, I think they would add a
great deal to the decor of the original Okie Acres, especially if they were

nice design statement, almost as good as one of those little hispanic guys

My experience too in a few different engines, both MB diesels and
lesser gassers.

If you don't want a new addition ON your driveway as well as TO the
driveway, avoid 0 weight anything.

Have you ever had an older (more than 15 years or so) MB diesel that did
NOT mark its territory at all?

My 300D has always dripped a little bit, not enough to noticeably affect
levels between changes, but a single drop will leave a mark on the
driveway.

My '77 does not drip. However, I was at work a while back and noticed
that there were small puddles of oil on many of my usual parking
spots. The next day I chalked the car, and found a small puddle was
under the battery, but saw no evidence of leaking. Puzzled over that
one for a couple days; tried to see if there was a cross-member, etc.

Turns out my coworker's relatively new ('02?) Saab was weeping badly.
I hadn't even considered that any of the this-millenium models might
be the cause... :)

'Tis possible to replace the bottom plate seal in situ, just not very
easy unless you're good at working via mirror. Did that job on my '87
wagon, now the only leaks are from the front seal of the power steering
pump and oily black goo from the intake manifold.

Mine neither. The only leak on the engine is, I believe, from the
seal around the bottom plate on the injection pump. Since that seal
isn't replaceable in situ, and I'm not going to undertake RRing the
pump just for that, it's going to stay leaking. But what little oil
comes out doesn't make it to the ground that I've noticed (and, no, I
don't have the plastic skid plates on my engine to catch
drips---someone threw them away a long time ago, as usual).
