2020-09-27 Thread Clay via Mercedes
Moles like bugs. Love lawn bugs, so you need to remove the buffet in your yard
and the moles will relocate to a place with a better menu. That does not help
your lawn much, as you have killed the worms that make great soil in the
process. I moved to property where the hardpan was very close to the surface
and a spring ran very close under the basement. Not much ability to cross
travel the yard before they hit the retaining wall that was sitting on hardpan
or basement walls. That and the chickens ate all the worms they could find.

Neighbor in GWN was so impressed with himself he had scored a bat size
courgette for only $3. I would toss those over grown things to my chickens or
allow the neighbors to use them for zucchini cake/bread. The thin 8 inch
fingerlings were more desirable, unless you wanted to stuff, then something
wrist width. Even one plant was more than anybody wanted. For some reason the
food banks did not want fresh produce donated from the garden.

They do it themselves, by grabbing the nuts glued to the triggers of
Victor rat traps.

What do you use for moles?

My yard is infested with them.

I've tried a couple of hardware store traps without much luck.

You're supposed to pick them before they get that big.
Or, failing that, you might give them to the kid to actually use as
baseball bats (credit humorist Erma Bombeck for that idea).

I trapped chipmunk #16 for the year today, plus one mole. I've got 4 traps out
now, 3 chipmunks yesterday.
I hadn't put the traps out since the end of July, chippie activity was down and
the ants were eating the almonds I use for bait. I've noticed a lot of activity

Which reminds me, its time to renew the decon and mouse traps in the basement

Zucchini is feast or famine. Decades ago in VA I had them producing
through September, the size of baseball bats.

We only had one this year but it went bonkers. I've got a 3'x10' raised bed,
dang zucchini hung over both sides of the bed, musta been 5' in diameter. It
kept branching out and making more fruits. We actually froze some this year.
Tried some the other day, it seems to have worked out good, we'll probably do
more next year.

Based on a little research the "shortage" is probably just another case of
good old hoarding.
Speaking of which we still can't buy Bounty paper towels, can't even get
Hannaford (our local supermarket) brand. Angie bought some "Oh So Strong" which
feel pretty good in the package but we haven't tried them yet.She saw some
quilted Northern toilet paper the other day and we're fully stocked on that.
One interesting thing we've learned during the shortages is that Angie's dad
PREFERS the single ply "chew yo butt up" cheap TP. We had some we were keeping
as emergency stock and rotated it out to them. Our emergency supply is the good
stuff now.

Canned pumpkins come almost exclusively from one town in Illinois. They're
almost all mechanically harvested since bruising of the outer flesh isn't the
issue it would be with Jack-o-lantern pumpkins.

Strangely pumpkins hate it being too wet more than too dry. If its too wet they
get the white powdery mildew. Normally a big problem for us here in north
central MA. My cucumbers and squashes are usually done by late August. This
year they made it until mid-September.

We've had the same issue here. I prefer "One Pie" pumpkin filling but its been
out of stock for weeks. We use it in pancakes and have had to resort to "other"
brands.
Tip: Look at a health food store or co-op. Even at the height of the shortages
last spring the co-op in Keene was always well stocked. Expensive, but well
stocked.

Good to know, Peter, thanks!

Guess we’ll hoard the one big can we have for Thanksgiving.

The vast majority of the pie filling pumpkins are grown in a small area in Iowa
(I think) -- a specific variety that isn't common elsewhere. Those big
decorative pumpkins don't make good pies, you want the small "sugar" or New
England Field ones. The big ones have watery slop for pulp when cooked.

Production problems have been more common up that way the last couple years.
Excessive rainfall, too cold too late, too hot and dry too early. And this
year the field labor to pick them probably came down with CoVid 19, it's the
same immigrant (often illegal) labor that handles nearly all commercial produce
in the US.

[MBZ] OT - Pumpkin Shortage?

2020-09-27 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Mrs. Dan had a couple of cans of pumpkin pie filling on the grocery list for a
bundt cake she was going to make today.

No (canned) pumpkin to be found anywhere. Publix had a sign on the shelf saying
there were “production shortages” of pumpkin. How can that be?

Guess I’ll have to go with the real thing and buy some pumpkins…
