I'd get those gas cans, those things are getting spendy these days. And
the limb trimmer

I'm looking to buy a new mountain bike, the vast majority of ads fail to
mention the size of the bike. When you ask they say "Come try it, you'll like
it." Well if it's smaller than a large I won't like it, that's why I want to
know the size...

Price is at the top where it always is.

Condition is clearly stated.

A number is the first thing in the ad. Detailed description with dimensions.
Close with a location as well as the little map that FB provides.

Everything is there in clearly described text.

The only thing I can think of is that people who are scroungers just go through
and click on everything they see, and if they get a response they go for it. I
mean, why else would you get all the “Is this still available?” replies that
ask questions whose answers are clearly stated in the listing?

One of the respondents asks, “Where are you in Lakeland?”  Whaaa???

I simply don’t get it. I think these people are brain damaged.

My Marketplace ad has the quantity, a description with pictures, and my

I got four responses for these overnight. Three of the four ask:

“How many are there?”; and

“Where are you located?”

I responded to all, “Read the ad.” Two people got nasty with me.

The lack of intelligence of the general populace is disturbing. Really.

Since FB auto populates the type your words in here area with “ is this still
available”, these people find it much easier to do one click to engage,
regardless of what the ad says, rather than having to type useful words.

I’m sure that the obsessions with phones has something to do with it, but more
so it’s a matter of comprehension. It’s not like the ads are long or complex -
the information is all there.

This is the post:

https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/256788820344724/?referralSurface=messenger_lightspeed_banner=messenger_banner

Re: [MBZ] /rant/ Facebook Sellers

2021-06-19 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Yes, that is pretty typical.  I send messages to sellers asking
questions that should be basic info in the ad already.  Crickets. I see
they have read the message but no response.  There was a car that has
been for sale locally for at least 2-3 months.  I messaged them and days
later they respond that it is pending.  A month goes by and the ad is
still there.  I message again asking if it sold or what.  Days later I
get a response they are waiting for the buyer to do something or other.
Here it is a month later ad is still there.

FB experiences for consideration and support of my theory:

“1 owner car” - I see a reference to an accident on the CF - “Before I owned
it” - “But I thought it was a one owner car?” - “I’m a dealer in NY - because
of that I don’t have to collect sales tax, so I can write up the invoice for
something less so you don’t have to pay as much” - so not only are they lying,
they want me to be complicit in tax fraud?

Clearly a sale by a old couple - I message them. Two days go by with no
activity. I finally get a response -“Give us your email address and we’ll send
a copy of the CF.” I do so. Two days later they message again with their phone
number. I call it and get voice mail. Ask for the CF, give my email address
again. Crickets. I text with my email address, it goes through as they’ve got
an iPhone and I can see the read confirmation. Two days later - a text asking
for my email address. I text it - again. A day later I get six or so discrete
pictures of the CF pages texted to me.

Several sellers with ads less than a day old. I message both. A day later and
the messages haven’t been read and of course, no response.

WTF is this? Are people just stupid?

Grrr.

I never pay more than $60 ea. for new tires and they have always been
wonderful, whether Yokes, Sumitomo, Dunlops or some other Japanese or Korean
brand that starts with the letter A that I purchased form Just Tires. The
industry is so compettive that you don't have to really worry anymore, IMHO.

[MBZ] rant about tires

2008-12-14 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
OK, just bought brand new tires for the 190D, got another 190D that
needs new tires. The 140 diesel will need new tires soon. The 140 I
just picked up will need new tires if I keep it. The trailer probably
should have new tires. The big dollar one is the truck, its going to
need new tires real soon, almost down to the wear bars. Those are
expensive. Crap.

Everything except disposal fee -- I kept the old tires to give to Debbie's
brother (he is building a hot rod). Didn't get any special (road hazard?)
warranty other than the 80,000 mile warranty that comes with the tires. Yea,
they were pricey but should be the only tires I ever have to buy for the car
and they are supposed to be really good in snow and ice, plus perform well
on dry pavement. I spent probably $100 more than I would have spent for
budget tires, and it was worth the extra cost to me. And if the tires are
still good when the 300E dies, I will keep them to put on my next 300E.

You need a nice single malt, pour a wee dram and sip it slowly while
staring at the fire. I would suggest a Dalwhinnie or Balvenie Double

But to answer your question, when those words are repeated over and

That doesn't hold water. Words like the to you are

And if those abbreviations are not defined earlier in the post,

[MBZ] Rant

2007-11-27 Thread Rich Thomas
Thanksgiving morning early my wife went cycling at this park in West
Houston. Some sh*thead smashed the passenger side window in her
Suburban, stole her phone, purse, etc. she left in there. So Fri I call
the dealer to see if they could do a replacement, they had to order the
glass, came yesterday. So I take the truck in, $400some ($200 labor)
later it is fixed, she is happy. But when I pick it up, I go look at it
to make sure everything done OK, and the glass is filthy -- grease,
fingerprints, oily film on it. I go in and ask the service person there
if it was expecting too much that for $400some they might think to clean
the glass. The service person wants to know if I want them to detail
the truck. No, maybe someone could get a couple of paper towels and
some windex and take 3 minutes to clean it? Oh, someone made a mistake,
should have washed it, but they are gone now, call back tomorrow. You
can't go find some windex and paper towels? No, I can't leave. How
about that guy that just drove it out? Oh, I can go try to find him if
you want... If you can go try to find him, how about just finding some
glass cleaner and some towels? Well if you come back tomorrow they will
take care of it. Why would I want to come back here tomorrow, take
another hour or two to deal with this?

By then the daughter unit, who came with me to drive it home, has taken off.

10AM and no call yet from the service manager. Am I crazy? Are my
expectations too high?

I talked to the service guy (I called him) and he was apologetic, did
not know why it wasn't cleaned (or the whole car was not washed) offered
an oil change. I can do that myself quicker than I go there, wait, come
home, deal with them, and I know it is actually done and correctly. I
suggested the service manager call me, which he did awhile ago, told me
how good his tech was and that he did a good job, did not know why he
did not finish it. At this point I guess there is not a whole lot more
to be said, but it still just really p's me off. I need to get over it.

Exactly. There is no service ethic anywhere, anymore, that I can detect
among the proles. There was only one service writer there, a woman, who
appeared to be marginally competent but could not leave her desk/phone,
etc (though she did say she could go try to find someone, but it baffled
her when I suggested if she could do that then maybe she could just deal
with it) and the checkout chicas barely hablaed anglais and didn't seem
to understand why this was an issue, so that was a waste too. Anyway,
daughter unit had taken off by then, so moot issue at that point.

Oh well, enough on this...

Not only NO! But H _ _ L NO you should not just get over it! People
getting over it is exactly what caused everyone to do away with I grew up
believing was customer service.

Why should Wal Mart hire more cashiers when we are happy just gripping about
standing in line? Why should a service center bother cleaning a window when
instead they could be earning more Got Ya bucks off another Joe?, etc.
etc. etc.

People tolerate the bad service and the companies save money it is a win/win
situation for them.

By then the daughter unit, who came with me to drive it home, has taken
 off.

10AM and no call yet from the service manager. Am I crazy? Are my
 expectations too high?

2007-11-27 Thread Rich Thomas
You have a point there and I have to agree. I was thinking some more
about this, and reminded myself of taking the truck to them back a few
months ago when the back glass blew out (design fault, recall on some
but not all, same design). I worked them a bit on replacing it (was
gonna be like $900), kinda alluded to a conversation I had with my
lawyer buddy about similar problems, and they got right on it, replaced
it for free a couple days later. They did not have to do that really
(although I got the sense that they had been doing a lot of them not as
recall but quietly acknowledging the problem), and did not give me much
of a hard time, so I was thankful for that.

I guess things balance out, I have spent too many cycles obsessing
already. I sent an email to the head guy, will see if I hear back. I
might call him to whinge a bit, though at this point that is all it is
cause I don't want to waste any more time with them or the issue.

Around here a lot of government offices have notices on the counter that
essentially say our staff does not have to
put up with you yelling or using obscenities etc., and will not do so. Being a
customer service person in many of
these places means you deal with a lot of the crazies out there and take a fair
amount of personal abuse. My wife
works in the main library at the university here and she occasionally has to
tell a patron that they are out of
line and that she won't serve them so long as they insist upon being abusive.
They usually go off in a huff but
come back hanging their head after calming down.
So, I think that when normal people deal with some of the counter folks, the
counter folk are often ready for a
rampage because it just happens too often.

Yeah, it's a funny thing - there's like a balance of power between the
customer and the provider. And it runs the gamut from a pleasant,
respectful cahsier to what you'll get at the DMV in any big city.
Doesn't have to be the dept. of motor vehicles though - that's just an
example.

When I visited the Phx. area recently after living in MN for several
years, I was reminded all too quickly by the rental car guy how one
gets treated there. And as much as I don't want to offend the more
sensitive among us - face it - in most places, if you have a Black
cashier, you just need to brace yourself for the attitude. It starts
with them not even acknowledging you or looking at you, much less
saying hello.

I recall one confrontation at the Olkahoma City Greyhound station. I
simply and courteosly stated that I had not received an itinerary, and
the big guy behind the counter acted like he wanted to assault me.
When I asked what their policy on getting a refund for my ticket was,
all he had to say was aint gonna happen. I had to tell him to give
me the itinerary and to get his manger and that it was not too much to
ask - so just do it! He replied excuse me? did you just tell me just
do it?!!

The point is the guy knew from experience that he could treat
customers that way - he held the power.

The most amazing experiences I have had have been one particular
little independetly-run vehicle licensing office in Rochester, MN.
They were always respectful and helpful and most of the time jovial
and downright friendly. Now there was a proper power balance.

Okay, I told you I was a stickler on this. Fortunately, the topic
title is rant.

Re: [MBZ] Rant

2007-11-27 Thread R A Bennell
The thing that I find even more disturbing is the effort that they put out to
convince you that they do provide
good service and care etc.

A few years ago I had my old Suburban repaired after a minor accident. I took
it to a local body shop that I had no
experience with but had heard good things about.

The fellow took me out to the vehicle after they called to advise it was ready
and I went to pick it up. They did a
lousy job of the repair. The front bumper was not mounted straight. I called it
to his attention and he gave me
some line of bull that Chevy's are like that and there is nothing they could do
about it. I said give me a few
minutes with a die grinder to elongate the holes and I will fix it myself. He
remained adamant that they could do
nothing. There was also a small dent in the leading face of the hood. I
commented that they hadn't repaired it. He
then stated that was not part of the job or some such nonsense. It certainly
was as it was caused by the same
accident that put me in their shop in the first place. By then I was angry
enough to tell him to stick it in his
ear and leave. The vehicle was old and imperfect anyway but it still made me
annoyed to think that they hadn't done
a good job but wanted me to pat them on the back anyway. When I got in the
truck there was a card on the dash that
said they had kept the interior clean and had not changed the settings on the
seat or the radio etc as a courtesy
to me. There was also a survey form that they wanted me to return to them to
tell them if they were doing a good
job. A few days later a nice young lady called to ask me in a cheery voice if
everything was ok and if I was still
happy with their work. She hadn't a clue what to say when I suggested she speak
to the fellow who had taken me out
to the truck about my complaints at the time that they hadn't done a good job
and his denial of the facts. They
haven't called again and I won't go near the place again. Unfortunately, I
think a lot of these places sell
themselves to stupid people by kissing the proverbial you know what. Then
people go around saying how nice these
folks are and that leaves poor suckers like me thinking that they do good work.
Go ahead and smmooze me if you must
but fix things properly or you are wasting your time.

The basic problem is that people don't take pride in their work anymore,
just do the basics and then expect a big fat pay cheque.
You can bet your boots that the person who did the sloppy window

see faults in others but hard to see own faults.

Again with my 2 cents...

I hear it all the time, Well, that's what you get now-a-days. I'm sorry,
that's what some people accept now-a-days.

It seems many tradesmen don't take pride in their work. It's all about the
pay. Satisfaction and pride have nothing to do with it. Well sorry, last
general contractor who wanted me to cut corners (as he does) I had just this
conversation and I wound up refusing to sub for him anymore. His wife called
saying I had hurt his feelings because I told him I was ashamed to be
associated with his work.

Those of us who actually find a sense of accomplishment in our work are

I went thru a similar situation with my 300D recently. Had the tires
rotated and the front end aligned. When they put the lugs on they were
wy to tight. When I got home I couldn;t break them loose. Took it back
to the shop and a huge guy came around with a torque wrench (clicker type)
and he wanted to prove he did it right - loosened one, and tightened it -
pulled it until it clicked and continued another 1/8 turn or so, then gave
it another pull for good measure for a total of 1/4 turn extra. Instead of
~90 #s it was probably closer to 120 or more.

I started to show him how to use a torque wrench but his attitude told me he
didn;t want anyone to show him the right way. When he warps someones
expensive rotors maybe he'll listen.

The basic problem is that people don't take pride in their work anymore,
just do the basics and then expect a big fat pay cheque.
You can bet your boots that the person who did the sloppy window

see faults in others but hard to see own faults.

If we think a service is unacceptable we're the odd one's with the problem?
Duh! Sadly it's not just service businesses or product quality. It's in
politics too!!! That's what you get now-a-days.

I called
it to his attention and he gave me
some line of bull that Chevy's are like that and there is nothing they could
do about it.
She hadn't a clue what to say when I suggested she
speak to the fellow who had taken me out
to the truck about my complaints at the time that they hadn't done a good job
and his denial of the facts. They
haven't called again and I won't go near the place again. Unfortunately, I
think a lot of these places sell
themselves to stupid people by kissing the proverbial you know what. Then
people go around saying how nice these
folks are and that leaves poor suckers like me thinking that they do good
work. Go ahead and smmooze me if you must
but fix things properly or you are wasting your time.

I you lose your temper when you have a complaint, you've lost. You're
complaint is no longer valid. Best to approach it with the gentle art of
verbal defense remaining calmly focused on the actual complaint and how it
is going to be resolved. It can't become a personal offensive/defensive
thing no matter how much you want to question the person's lineage and
reason for existence.

So, I think that when normal people deal with some of the counter folks, the

After attaining a Mater's degree to assist people in helping themselves

Why? Pride in workmanship. I refused to play the games that administration

Now that same administration has black balled me and I could not get a job
even if they were in desperate need.

My final take? I know that what I did was the right thing to do. I wake up

Will I ever make a huge difference to the world? Absolutely not! BUT, my
decision to say SCR _ _ You All (the administration) has left me feeling
good about myself. :)

Pride in whatever it is I do day to day and happy doing so. :)

It seems many tradesmen don't take pride in their work. It's all about the

[MBZ] Rant about driver door window switches-300D's

2006-05-12 Thread Marshall Field

I am asking the group for some collective wisdom about how to get more
service life out of these switches. I live in Arizona, where you typically
have the windows rolled up the majority of the year. Yet, every 16 months,
for the past 15 years, on each of my three 300D's, I have had to buy a new
switch.

Usually what happens is that the rocker action becomes sticky, then the
switch literally flies apart into your hand on one of the next cycles.

At nearly a hundred bux a pop from Rusty, it seems to me that there should
be something from a maintenance standpoint that could be done to get some
more service life out of these switches.

Anyone have some suggestions?

I always disassemble them and spray liberally with contact cleaner. Seems
to hold up for 30,000 miles or so like that.

If you're going to take them apart, do it inside a ziplock bag so, if the
parts and pieces jetteson from the housing, they are contained. Be careful
taking the switch out/prying up the fakeola chrome trim...it breaks easily
after having been in our cars in AZ.

I always disassemble them and spray liberally with contact cleaner. Seems
to hold up for 30,000 miles or so like that.

At nearly a hundred bux a pop from Rusty, it seems to me that there

be something from a maintenance standpoint that could be done to get some
more service life out of these switches.

Anyone have some suggestions?

Disassemble and clean, then reassemble with a dot of grease on the
BB's. But I've never had a switch pop apart by itself, the usual
problem around here is they get dirty and stop working correctly.

I often do a rocker transplant from good junkyard rear window
switches so that I get renewed legends on the front ones. Of
course that's a perfect time to clean them too.

[MBZ] RANT: Gmail attachments

2005-08-31 Thread Dave M.
I just learned one of the limitations of Gmail. You cannot send .EXE files
of any kind, even if they are in a Zip package! Renaming the .exe to
something else ('.exx' for example) doesn't work either, with or without
Zipping. Gmail still pops up the same error that executable files are not
allowed to be sent. Well isn't THAT just freakin' great. Anyone have a
workaround that doesn't involve posting files to an FTP server?

I got it to work...just remove the .exe part...you have to tell the
recepient to add it back in though
