The downside is that they can and do fail. They are working in one of
the hottest parts of the engine bay. I don't know about MB fans but this
was a weak point when I owned a VW Jetta that had an electric fan. I
replaced it at least three times during my ownership.

Of course, the belt can fail on belt-driven fans, but IMO there's more
opportunity to see that coming and deal with it proactively.

I also believe 2000 was the first year that ESP was standard in the
210.1999
A non-ESP 210, even 4Matic, is tail-happy when you hit the throttle in
the snow.
I used to practice powersliding my 1999 wagon in a parking lot in early
snows every year.
I could usually catch the slide without lifting off the gas on the first
attempt without overcorrecting by more than a foot, but after the first
time each year I was pretty good at not losing the rear end in the first
place and never overcorrected again.

I *think* the facelift (2000-2002, 2003 for the wagon) cars have additional
structural rigidity, or something related to the safety of the passengers.

Couldn't stop myself. Quote from the '99 crash test. "Additional structural
changes were made beginning with the 2000 E class models manufactured after
January 2000, so the listed ratings do not apply to the latest models".

Links.

https://www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/mercedes-benz/e-class-4-door-sedan/2001

Obviously no one intentionally crashes a car. That said, A.M. Booth drove
Mercedes for the safety aspect. At least two members here have been in crashes
that may have turned out differently in a lesser marque.

Safer is better.
Worth a thought.

I think the lack of an engine driven fan is what threw me off. I thought that
was one of the indicators of a facelift car. Now I know better. Thanks!

I’m thinking about making the guy an offer of maybe $2600 and seeing what his
reaction is. It still listed today, so I don’t think he’s had any takers yet.
He said there were some people who were supposed to come by yesterday and look
at it.

Hmm.

This is a 99 model year, but it’s definitely a facelift model as it has all the
stuff. I don’t know when the change took place exactly.

Delivery date was 10-5-98, “approximate” build date was October as well
according to the data card.

Steering wheel control buttons, door mirror turn signal indicators, etc., etc.

I was surprised as well when I opened the hood, as a giveaway is the change to
an electric cooling fan.

until the end of November, but if I get something now I can use it as a DD and
be comfortable that it’s in good running condition and won’t need additional
work to make it bulletproof.

There are some potential project cars on the current market, but between the
crappy weather (heat) here and the limited amount of time I have to wrench
right now they just don’t make good sense. I’ll pay my money up front in this
case and get something I’m confident is solid.

Re: [MBZ] The Search Continues...

2020-10-10 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Nope. Most dealers won’t let an owner see the VMI, short of maybe letting them
look at it on the computer screen. I have a source for them that emails them to
me. I just haven’t had a chance to get them the information. I might still get
it today, if not, Monday for sure.

We’ll see. I’m still sort of “meh” on this one, but the pickings are really
slim around here for just about anything decent and used, or so it seems. I
hate to act fro desperation as I’m not under any pressure, but I also don’t
want to buy something and not have time to thoroughly vet it before I drive it
across country.

Can just the owner order a VMI?

$2800 is close enough to asking price so you will probably succeed.

[MBZ] The Search Continues...

2020-10-10 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Went looking at a couple of W210s sedans with 4Matic, not something that’s
common around here.

First one:

https://tampa.craigslist.org/hil/cto/d/valrico-1999-mercedes-benz-e320-4matic/7207020887.html

Pretty solid, mostly Florida car, guy is clearly a flipper and I called him out
on it (nicely.) I don’t care, flipping is fine with me as long as the price is
reasonable for the car. Exterior is good, interior probably an 8 out of 10.
When he got the car it needed a conductor plate and connector body as well as
front axles, which he’s done himself. Car drives well, everything works from
what I can tell. I haven’t seen the VMI on it yet, hoping to get one before the
end of the day. Don’t know what his position is on price. Looks like it’s got
three accidents reported against it, none major (“no damage reported”) except
one in 10/2018 which appears to have been repaired at the dealer in Sarasota.

I might go for this one if I could get it for maybe $2800.

Number two:

https://tampa.craigslist.org/pnl/cto/d/dunedin-2001-mercedes-benz-e320-4matic/7211065337.html

Looks nice, doesn’t it? This is a classic example of pictures not telling the
whole story. I was pretty stoked about this one, as it looked nice. As soon as
I saw the VMI I knew it would be a bust, but I figured I would look just in
case - you never know unless you look, right?

Delivered in NY, went to Chicago, was up North until 2017. Interestingly, the
miles put on the car while it was in Chicago were really low, like less than
3,000/year. This was encouraging, as I was hoping that maybe it was a summer
car for a snowbird. No such luck.

While it presented well in pictures, I could look into the corners of the front
of the engine compartment and see rust. Perforations in undercarriage metal
from rust. Surprisingly, the first place I looked was door bottoms, and they
were surprisingly clean. But underneath the car was a whole ‘nother story. On
top of the front fenders the paint was flaking off, too, something you can’t
see in the pictures.

I gave the car a cursory once-over to be polite and respectful about the guy’s
time, but immediately crossed it off the list. And also - it had a CEL and
BAS/ABS lights, which of course the seller failed to mention. “My mechanic said
it’s something that’s got to do with the wheel sensors”, he said. Yeah, I’ll
bet every one of them is rusty.

Pass.

I’m giving some serious thought on the first one until I can see the VMI. If it
was pranged and the dealer fixed it, I’m fine with that. I didn’t see any
indication of body repairs, so whoever did the work did it well. And I would
add that the seller disclosed the accident reports when he showed me the car,
as he had a CarFax for it that I didn’t look at.

Hmm.

You know, Don, I wouldn’t be against that, The thing that is holding me back
is having a place to do it. I just don’t have a space where I could have a
vehicle out of service and carved up. I will seriously consider taking some
metalworking classes at the local vo-tech school when retirement time rolls
around, for sure. I’m sure i”m capable, I just don’t have the time, space or
resources to do it at this point in my life.

I can stick weld 1/4” - 1/2" plate with a 400A Miller buzz box all day long.
Working with sheet metal is not something I’ve done.

Meh. He doesn't have acreage or an airplane hangar. He has an HOA, that he
fortunately is the president of, I think. Paint fumes and HOA don't mix.
Neither does dust and an attached garage where SWMBO car is parked. As for
skills, I suspect Dan is quite capable of learning them, and being proficient

[MBZ] The Search Continues...

2018-11-19 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Not sure if I mentioned this, so if I did please excuse me and delete.

I am now full-bore back into a search for a Ponton, W110/W111/W108.

W110/W111, gas/diesel, auto/manual. If I had the perfect car it would be a 230S
(67/68) with AC, but second choice would be any model year W110/W111 diesel
with a stick, ideally a floor shifter.

W108 6 cylinder sedan, manual or auto, AC would make it perfect but I can add
it later on, so lack of it is not a deal killer.

Late model Ponton, 180, 190, 220, etc. Six cylinder preferred, not required.

No restoration candidates, that is, if it needs bodywork due to rust, I’m not
interested. I could deal with a minor bubble here or there, or tired paint that
needs to be buffed out, but no rusty rockers, fenders or door bottoms. I can do
anything but bodywork, so that takes potential candidates right out of the
running if they need paint or rust repair. I can do pretty much anything else,
so if a candidate has needs in the interior or mechanical areas I would
consider it. No major repairs, that is, I'm not looking to rebuild an engine
for example.

I don't want a project car. I am looking for a driver quality or better car.
I'm not expecting perfection, but I’m willing to spend up in the $10k range, so
that weeds out a lot of potential cars if they have anything significant in the
way of needs. I'll travel anywhere in the CONUS as long as I can find someone
trusted to vet the car prior to purchase.

Thanks to all,

Dan

Re: [MBZ] The Search Continues....

2015-04-05 Thread Curt Raymond
I've been doing that for years but for it to really work you need to have a
very cheap car and be able to do the work yourself. One major expense with a
mechanic and all your savings are gone. My '83 240D was my best effort to date
with about 25,000 miles for the cost of about $2,500 which includes oil
changes. That car was a jalopy though and I didn't dare take it any farther
than the 100 miles round trip to work and back. At the end it leaked/consumed
oil so bad that I was using CarQuest 15w40 conventional which was the cheapest
oil I could find and I was using the drain oil as makeup between oil changes.
While it did suffer an oil related failure that finally ended its life it was
failure of an oil cooler bypass hose not any problem with the oil itself.
In the end I'd bought the car for $400 (the second time I bought it) and sold
it for $200, plus I'd sold a bunch of parts for around another $100 so I came
out real good.
The Jetta is doing pretty well, I've put I think 25,000 miles on it with maybe
$4000 invested (which includes buying the car and both summer and winter tires
plus buying the second set of rims) if nothing big goes wrong I should be
approaching the '83 240D by the end of this year...

I still it's best to buy the cheapest daily driver, and to improve/repair
it over time as you soak up the miles.

  Absolutely.

I learned a long, long time ago that it's far better to pay the money up
front and buy the best car possible than buying something cheaper and
 having to deal with fix-up/clean-up.

Hopefully tonight's car will be the one.

The S320 from this weekend was nice, but the guy isn't motivated and is
also trying to recoup some of his expenses on top of the car's value.

All things being equal, if I had a choice of a 1996 S320 with 103k, three
owner, well serviced and a 1998 S420 with 61k, one owner, dealer serviced,
 I'll buy the S420.

They're both in the high $5k value range, and both are asking $6500 or
 more.

The guy with the granny car that had the trashed exterior and rusty door

This is after he turns down an offer for $5k yesterday before I saw it, or
 so he says.

This is the ad for reference:

 http://sarasota.craigslist.org/cto/4959771565.html

Here is his message to me at the bottom and my response above:

  Robert,

I'm going to be brutally honest here, since you asked:

Your ad is a gross misrepresentation of the car in my opinion. To-wit:

1.) Recent serviced at mercedes with oil change synthetic only since
new, new toyo tires and alignment, new brakes front and rear,

You yourself admitted that other than the alignment, the work was not
done at the dealership. I would interpret at mercedes as the dealer, as
I would expect most people would. The way this was written is a serious
 misstatement at the minimum.

2.) Interior is nice, exterior has a few parking lot dings and scrapes
over the years so not perfect! but can be easily made perfect.

Really? Does that include the old drink stains on the carpet? Could
you spend an hour or two with a can of carpet cleaner and at least make an
effort to clean the interior up? Is that the average person's idea of
 nice? I don't think so.

 A few parking lot dings

A crumpled left front fender and a right rear quarter that has been
painted with a rattle can, and poorly at that, would not, in my very broad
interpretation, be considered by the average person as parking lot dings
and scrapes. Maybe I have a higher standard, but I would still challenge
any reader of this ad to consider the body damage the car has to be minor.

3.) it's practically like driving a new Benz

Robert. Really? Do you honestly believe this? You're comparing this
car to a new Mercedes? I visit Mercedes of Tampa almost weekly picking up
parts, and I've never seen a new Mercedes in the condition this car is in.
 Ever.

In its present condition, if I compared it to all of the W140 chassis
cars I have looked at in the area over the last 30-45 days, this is a $2500
beater. I'm not saying that to be cruel, I'm comparing it to the cars that
you're competing against in the market, which are also described far more
honestly than yours. I know you won't, but I would challenge you to go out
and look at a couple to get an idea of what's out there so you can
understand where this car stacks up against the competition.

I have no interest in the car, as I said when we met. It has rust which
is a huge strike against it, especially when nearly every other W140
currently in the local market has none. It's a deal breaker if there ever
 was one.

Thanks for the offer, but I'll pass.

I think that concrete will pass a fair amount of moisture, which is going
to contribute to corrosion in general.

I find that the aluminum engine parts on my MB's corrode, and they are not
exposed to salted winter roads or even salt air. My bet is that happens
when an engine is cleaned but then not properly treated with a preservative
coating as called for in the maintenance manual.

Re: [MBZ] The Search Continues....

2015-04-01 Thread Dan Penoff
Any number of places.

I'll usually look at Kelley, NADA and Edmunds to start. After a few weeks of
watching the market you can get a pretty good idea of the value ranges based on
how people are advertising, too.

Right now I would say that around here a really nice W140 with low miles is
going to be in the low $6000 range, possibly more depending on the car's
history and ownership. Decent examples with higher mileage, say in the
130k-160k range are around $3500-$4500.

If you look at the national pricing services like Kelley, they'll be skewed
towards the retail market, meaning they'll be far lower than what the private
market is selling at for trade values and way high for retail. This is mainly
due to the way they collect data (from dealers and auctions) so private sales
aren't properly represented.

They're handy in negotiations on private sales as their prices are low compared
to the market. If the seller tries to use them as a data point, it's easy to
dispel, as they represent retail prices, not private sales. That argument won't
hold water when you point out that retail sellers have far more overhead and as
a result will ask a much higher price than most private sales.

That it may, but I have direct experience with cars being stored in an unheated
area in temperate climates that had corrosion on aluminum parts due to
condensation from the concrete. None of them were driven on roads when salt
was present.

As the slab heats and cools along with the ambient humidity and temperature
changes, moisture will condense on the exposed metal parts and cause them to
corrode. That's why when I have stored cars over the winter in an unheated
garage I always put down a moisture barrier (plastic sheeting) between the car
and the floor/slab.

It just keeps getting better

The guy with the granny car that had the trashed exterior and rusty door
bottom emails me tonight asking if I'll give him $5k for the car as-is.

I would interpret at mercedes as the dealer,
as I would expect most people would. The way this was written is a
serious misstatement at the minimum.

2.) Interior is nice, exterior has a few parking lot dings and scrapes
over the years so not perfect! but can be easily made perfect.

Really? Does that include the old drink stains on the carpet? Could you
spend an hour or two with a can of carpet cleaner and at least make an
effort to clean the interior up? Is that the average person's idea of
nice? I don't think so.

A few parking lot dings

A crumpled left front fender and a right rear quarter that has been
painted with a rattle can, and poorly at that, would not, in my very
broad interpretation, be considered by the average person as parking lot
dings and scrapes. Maybe I have a higher standard, but I would still
challenge any reader of this ad to consider the body damage the car has
to be minor.

3.) it's practically like driving a new Benz

Robert. Really? Do you honestly believe this? You're comparing this
car to a new Mercedes? I visit Mercedes of Tampa almost weekly picking
up parts, and I've never seen a new Mercedes in the condition this car is
in. Ever.

In its present condition, if I compared it to all of the W140 chassis
cars I have looked at in the area over the last 30-45 days, this is a
$2500 beater. I'm not saying that to be cruel, I'm comparing it to the
cars that you're competing against in the market, which are also
described far more honestly than yours. I know you won't, but I would
challenge you to go out and look at a couple to get an idea of what's out
there so you can understand where this car stacks up against the
competition.

I have no interest in the car, as I said when we met. It has rust which
is a huge strike against it, especially when nearly every other W140
currently in the local market has none. It's a deal breaker if there
ever was one.

Thanks for the offer, but I'll pass.

If not interested that fine too. Thanks Robert

As the slab heats and cools along with the ambient humidity and temperature

corrode. That's why when I have stored cars over the winter in an unheated

I have also seen cars that were parked in a barn or garage on a dirt

the car is a scaly rusty mess.

Re: [MBZ] The Search Continues....

2015-03-31 Thread Dan Penoff
Me too.

Unfortunately, when a seller completely fails to mention the rattlecan paint
job on the right rear quarter it's tough to know...

First impressions weren't bad, it had some dings and parking lot wounds that
weren't deal killers. However, when I looked under the hood I could
immediately tell the car had sat for long periods on a concrete slab. The
aluminum parts on the engine were badly corroded. As I continued my walk
around I got to see the right rear quarter, which was straight but the paint
was so bad it was unbelievable. Someone had repainted a damaged section of
the car with a rattle can, I believe.

That pretty well ended it right there, and I told the seller that on the spot.
I then looked at the door bottoms, and the front passenger side door was nearly
rusted through behind the weatherstripping. Strangely, none of the other doors
had all but the slightest bit of rest on them.

Anyway, it was a sins of omission ad where the guy was truthful, but just
didn't get into the description in as much depth as he should have.

Oh, well. As I tell the spouse, you never know unless you look.

sigh

I'm going to email the guy in Spring Hill tonight with the S320 and make him a
stupid offer ($5500). He's asking $6800 after the head gasket job, but WTF? I
have nothing to lose, other than maybe offending a guy who I'll never see
again...or maybe he's feeling generous...

A 1998 S420 came back up on CL tonight in St. Pete. It was listed about a
month ago and then disappeared.

Here's something to think about when using CL: Screen shot any ads you're
interested in. If they're taken down, there's no way to see them again.
Google doesn't cache them often enough to go back and see them. At least that
way you still have contact information if there was a phone number. The mail
links still work after an ad is cancelled, too.

rust underneath. Owner didn't even know it.

[MBZ] The Search Continues....

2015-03-28 Thread Dan Penoff
But it seems to be getting better, thank goodness.

Looked at this 1996 S320 today:

http://tampa.craigslist.org/hdo/cto/4947867972.html

Been chasing this guy for a week. He just reposted the ad a few days ago and
raised the price $400 - it had been up for over a month at $6400. I suspected
this was due to the 100,000 mile service and overhaul by Mercedes specialist
costing $2,500 he just did. So I drove the 90 minutes to Brookville to have a
look

The car was described as in the ad. Very clean, well maintained, all service
records for his ownership, etc. Two dings that I found: the mirrors didn't
work, which he pointed out, as he had used RTV to seal the joints between the
mirror housing and doors and added a chrome trim strip across the front of
both. Ouch. Nasty, but reversible. No doubt the mirror wiring harnesses have
failed. Not a pleasant repair, but a DIY one that takes about two hours a
mirror.

As for the recent overhaul, he was pretty much spot-on. He took the car in
for service and his mechanic noticed the head gasket was seeping at the rear of
the engine. This guy pretty much gives his mechanic free reign from what I
could tell, and it was clear to me that the mechanic has some boat payments
he's got to make. So a couple of weeks ago the car gets a new head gasket,
thermostat, new radiator (??) and tranny fluid and filter change. This was all
apparent from inspection as well.

Get this - I checked the coolant in the reservoir and couldn't make out the
color. There was this beige crud in the reservoir that would stick to my glove
if I put my finger into the coolant. Weird. I an only assume it was some sort
of sludge or crud left in the reservoir that didn't get flushed out when the
radiator got replaced. I wonder if it was ATF? The color was weirdly
reminiscent of ATF that had been in water...

Strange, very strange.

Other than that everything worked, the body was almost a 9.9 out of 10, and the
interior immaculate. The PSE pump was acting up as all of the doors' closing
assists weren't working - when I point this out he tells me that he had noticed
this and found that by pulling the fuse they would work again for a while.
That's because there's a leak and the pump section for that door is timing out.

Being a 1996 model I'm wondering if some of the dreaded wiring harness issues
could still be lurking on this car. The engine harness looked OK, but the
mirrors are another place where the biodegradable wiring fails big-time. It's
possible the engine harness was replaced in the past.

All in all a good prospect, but this guy's not motivated to sell and will
probably not budge on price due to his recent expenditures. I'm betting he
expects to recoup some of his expenses on top of what he was previously asking.
We'll see. The guy was like someone out of the Sopranos. Dark complected
Mediterranean looking guy, open shirt with his gold chain and astral sign
medallion, bouffant-like hair, pinkie ring, etc. I'm wondering if I make him
too low of an offer I'll be swimming with the fishes

Here's my next prospect:

http://orlando.craigslist.org/cto/4952435910.html

Just got an email back from the owner and I'm trying to set up a visit as soon
as possible. This looks nice and could be an excellent choice if it's as
described. What's weird is that he posted it in Orlando but he's in Wesley
Chapel, which is about 40 minutes directly north of me. That's probably good
for me.

And in far poorer condition, too.

Kaleb, you might be able to comment on something I came across the other day

A guy in Sarasota has been advertising an S500. It's listed as a private sale.
I talk to him and he starts talking about how it's got an open title and
that he's selling it for his employer, a independent car dealer.

In other words, they took a car in trade or in kind for something, the seller
signed the title, and they never recorded the title. So, the title has the
signature of the previous owner, which makes anyone who has it the owner of the
car.

This has shady written all over it. Is it legal?

I should have asked him who would be on the bill of sale as the seller if I
bought it?

I'm going to pop down to the DMV office in my building on Monday and ask them
about it.

Dan

mirrors didn't work, which he pointed out, as he had used RTV to seal the
joints between the mirror housing and doors and added a chrome trim strip
across the front of both. Ouch. Nasty, but reversible. No doubt the
mirror wiring harnesses have failed. Not a pleasant repair, but a DIY one
that takes about two hours a mirror.

As for the recent overhaul, he was pretty much spot-on. He took the car
in for service and his mechanic noticed the head gasket was seeping at the
rear of the engine. This guy pretty much gives his mechanic free reign
from what I could tell, and it was clear to me that the mechanic has some
boat payments he's got to make. So a couple of weeks ago the car gets a
new head gasket, thermostat, new radiator (??) and tranny fluid and filter
change. This was all apparent from inspection as well.

Get this - I checked the coolant in the reservoir and couldn't make out the
color. There was this beige crud in the reservoir that would stick to my
glove if I put my finger into the coolant. Weird. I an only assume it was
some sort of sludge or crud left in the reservoir that didn't get flushed
out when the radiator got replaced. I wonder if it was ATF? The color was
weirdly reminiscent of ATF that had been in water...

 Strange, very strange.

Other than that everything worked, the body was almost a 9.9 out of 10, and
the interior immaculate. The PSE pump was acting up as all of the doors'
closing assists weren't working - when I point this out he tells me that he
had noticed this and found that by pulling the fuse they would work again
for a while. That's because there's a leak and the pump section for that
 door is timing out.

Being a 1996 model I'm wondering if some of the dreaded wiring harness
issues could still be lurking on this car. The engine harness looked OK,
but the mirrors are another place where the biodegradable wiring fails
big-time. It's possible the engine harness was replaced in the past.

All in all a good prospect, but this guy's not motivated to sell and will
probably not budge on price due to his recent expenditures. I'm betting he
expects to recoup some of his expenses on top of what he was previously
asking. We'll see. The guy was like someone out of the Sopranos. Dark
complected Mediterranean looking guy, open shirt with his gold chain and
astral sign medallion, bouffant-like hair, pinkie ring, etc. I'm wondering
if I make him too low of an offer I'll be swimming with the fishes

 Here's my next prospect:

Just got an email back from the owner and I'm trying to set up a visit as
soon as possible. This looks nice and could be an excellent choice if it's
as described. What's weird is that he posted it in Orlando but he's in
 Wesley Chapel, which is about
