[MBZ] transmission needs to be replaced 2006 Mercedes-Benz cl-class CL 500 Coupe 2D, $4, 500

2024-06-05 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
722.9 transmission, conductor plate likely fried.  Price is too high by
$3k.  Plus the headlights look wonky and the hood/bumper are not quite
right.  Missing one parking sensor.

The transmission just went out. It will not change into second gear. It
will drive it will go in reverse.

[MBZ] Transmission going out! It runs and moves 2006 Mercedes-Benz e-class E 350 Wagon 4D, $2, 500

2023-12-20 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Needs a new conductor plate/TCM and of course the engine is a big worry,
looks like the intake manifold has already failed. Too bad, it looks
fairly decent

I was driving it one day and the check engine light came on with a code
saying that the transmission gear ratio was off. It needs intake runners
which I have already bought with an updated intake manifold for $500
("comes with car") just a few weeks before the transmission started
acting up.

2023-10-14 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

Could be a reasonably cheap interesting project

however, I never got the clutch figured out so when you go over 45 miles
an hour it starts to slip and you can smell clutch material The car.
Also has bad blow by when I got it someone had caulked around where the
air filter seize up the oil also has an electric problem with the
windows need to fuse for it, but the fuse keeps on burning up, but
everything else works fine

Re: [MBZ] Transmission Fluid Q

2021-11-10 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
I had an '87 toyota truck when I was young, and would agree at least at that
time the transmissions were good. Not really knowing much the first time I
changed the fluid I just used Dexron III that I picked up at the local gas
station and it never missed a beat. The truck was used many years after that
and when it was finally sold it was rusty as heck but the engine and
transmission were still running like new.

A friend who is a Honda-trained mechanic nearly had me convinced that Hondas
MUST use the OE transmisison fluid you can only get at the dealer. But after
two Honda transmission failures, I think they just have weak clutch linings.
Watched a couple of rebuild videos on them and one of the rebuilders said he
just uses good synthetic fluid in them and doesn't get them back for any
reasons related to the fluid.

I'd probably put in whatever the Toyota dealer parts department sells for the

Future SIL’s third gen 4runner is leaking transmission fluid out of the back of
the transmission were an electrical connection is. The fix is like a $.65
O-ring. Of course to do it you have to drain the transmission fluid out.
Of course my reaction is drain the fluid out drop the pan change the filter do
all those things that anyone of us would normally do, but Toyota says no. All
you do is drain the fluid out and then refill it. They say that you should
expect about 2 1/2 quarts. as a matter of fact, they don’t even sell any
filters for those transmissions.
That being said, here’s my question. We have no idea what type of transmission
fluid is in the transmission. Will mixing whatever we choose to put back in
with whatever could possibly be in there be an issue?

Good call, Grant.

Even if you have to buy a new drain pain, it’s likely much cheaper than buying
a couple quarts of ATF.

I have a drain pain I keep spotlessly clean for such things. When I’m done
using it I clean it out and store it inside a cabinet inverted so no dust or
crud gets into it.

How about just capture the fluid that comes out is a clean container [very
clean] and seal it up while you are doing the repair, then put it back in
the trans?
It was working before, why not put it back in, just do a clean job of
saving it.

Looks like a 3rd gen uses T-III but T-IV is backward compatible. I think
Castrol Import ATF meets these standards but you would have to check.

Depending on the year and transmission you’ve got to have either “WS” or “T-IV”
rated fluid. Neither are FLAPS sort of fluids to the best of my knowledge.
There are aftermarket versions with these ratings but you have to determine
what you’ve got first.

Well, no, I don't remember that, sorry.

As it was sitting in our Big Room for a protracted time, I did a lot of
maintenance on it besides trying to track down the phantom current drain
and secure the cooling system. Part of the maintenance was a new Mann
filter and ATF.

I'd guess it has about 250 miles on the new ATF and filter.

They show it is applicable for only cars of year 2000 and later.

Is there any reason why it would not work in W124 diesels (I don't know
what model of transmission they have)?

How close to the bottom of the transmission pan does the bottom of the
transmission filter come? I did not think of figuring that out when I had
the pan off our '93 E320D/2.5 Turbo.

What Dan said. The dipstick has nothing to engage the top of the tube, you
shove it down until it hits the pan and measure up from there.
But whatever you shove down that tube needs to be super clean.
And you'll need a new red lock pin for the cap when you put it back on.

Re: [MBZ] Transmission Dipstick for my W210

2017-11-29 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
A piece of wire will suffice. All you need to know is the dimension for the
fluid height from the end of the wire based on temperature. As far as I know
the dipstick for the 722.6xx transmissions is a single part, that is, I’m not
aware of there being different ones.

If you want I can measure mine when I get home and post the measurements.

What is the correct part number for a dipstick for my 98 E300D? I’ve called
three dealers and got three different numbers. All of which I left work on my
desk. I got to get a dipstick.
When the car is cold and I driveaway out of my driveway and make the first stop
at the end of the street. When I started from that stuff I can feel it
slipping. Once it warms up it quits. Of course the obvious thing is to check
the fluid level but I need a damn dipstick.

Re: [MBZ] Transmission oil

2016-09-19 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I doubt it, its a very common complaint with VW transmissions using VW oil.
They say its "notchy" in that you can feel the gears notches connect.
The first year I had the Jetta I used half MTL and half MT-90 which was nice
with not notchy feeling but quite stiff when cold. I'd read that MT-90 could
make stiff shifts when cold which is why I added the MTL. The following year I
used just MTL, it shifts more stifly in the cold but you'd expect that, its
cold after all. Loosens up after a mile or two.

While we're having oil threads I figured I'd toss out this:
Angie's '05 Golf has a notchy 1st gear shift. Particularly if you're rolling
backwards slightly when you put it into 1st it'll make a crunch noise. It
doesn't seem to hurt anything and is a common complaint on these cars. My '98
Jetta has the same transmission (mostly) but doesn't do the crunch.
The difference? My '98 has Redline MTL in it, hers has VW spec stuff. The VW
stuff is very thin, like ATF or thinner. The MTL isn't much thicker but
apparently that thickness makes a difference.
When I make the next oil change I'm going to put MTL in her car, I should make
a video and see if it makes a difference.

I'm hoping some of you experienced gentlemen can assist in a
diagnosis and possible repair of the transmission on our 1980 300TD.
The reverse gear stopped working suddenly after a sharp drop into a
hole in our driveway at a slow speed of about 10 mph. No sound at
all, just would not engage or try to move when we started it up a
few minutes later. So, we thought the transmission must be on its
way to complete shutdown, however, we continued to drive it for
another 4 or 5 thousand miles. (you do get creative in how you park
when you can only move forward!) It just kept going and going! Now
we are needing to repair some ball joints and other stuff in front
end. The question is now, can the tranny be repaired with a
reasonable cost and effort to make it worthwhile to order the front
end parts and repair that? We love this car!
The shift lever seems tight. I have read about how the bushings can
be damaged and cause trouble. But it doesn't seem like that is it.
Is it worth changing them, just in case? Really would appreciate
some feedback and advise! Thanks so much, we really learn a lot from

There may be an adjustment on the reverse band. Mitch might know.

If you have to have a rebuilt transmission, Mark is the guy to buy it

what he drives.

Re: [MBZ] Transmission Question

2016-01-22 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
There are two sets of bushings. Large (like 1/2 inch dia) sleeves on the
transverse (trunnion) axis of the shifter (for the fore-aft motion of the
stick) and smaller snap-in bushings on the bottom of the shifter assembly
(under the car) and on the transmission shift lever. The round rod that
connects the shifter and transmission pokes through these small bushings and
is retained by a spring clip. You can replace the small ones working under
the car but it can be a pig to snap the new bushings into the holes (shifter
and transmission) without the special tool or a home-made jig (washers, a
nut and bolt, and a sleeve), especially if it's cold outside. The snap
clips (that retain the rod in the bushing) is very easy to lose (sproiing,
oh crap!). If you plan to do the big bushings it's easier to remove the
shifter (which you need to do anyway) and work through the hole from above.
My old 79 TD shifter was very loose when I first got it but it felt like
brand new after I replaced both sets of bushings. The big bushings in my 82
SD still seem OK but (several years back) I heard a "buzz" from under the
car which turned out to be a failed (missing) small bushing. As I recall, I
lost the spring clip and also had to remove the transmission lever from the
car to pop in the new small bushing. In both cases the cars still shifted
OK with damaged bushings but I can see how there would be a problem if the
linkage adjustment was marginal.

That depends on the vintage of the 123. My '79 required an easy adjustment.

Ideally, the time required to engage reverse is a function of transmission wear.

But, I believe that one of the band adjusting bolts backing out can do it too.

IIRC, B2 failure means you lose forward gears.

I think it's a matter of putting the transmission selector in "R" but the car
not backing up. Good thing to check, though.

I don't know about that but have you checked the bushings? They went

[MBZ] Transmission Toast?

2015-06-07 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes

Is slipping in high gear a fatal symptom to the 240D auto trans? (1981)

yes, it flares at every shift. i shift manually and try to let up on
the pedal and try to minimize the flare. We also don't drive it too
far from home.

I agree, but getting out the pedal set was a royal pain. I am not
sure I can contort enough to get the new pedal set in. The rest of
it is pretty straightforward.

One other thing I am considering is a 82-83 trans with the big box
doohicky that sits on the side between the IP and the oelfilter.
That box replaces the vacuum valve that sits on top of the valve
cover.

If you want to come through and donate some kids' time to R&R the
pedal set and master cyl, id be happy! We can all go to Hickory
Park...

That's my idea of how to repair an automatic transmission!
I've never actually done it, though...

If I remember correctly, the 240D flywheel is balanced
separately from the shaft, so all I need to do is swap
flywheels to get started. (and buy a pilot bearing)

That's what I recall.

I have also read of folks who used the 4 cyl flywheel for a 5
cyl car and it "worked ok"

Yeah, I put the OM621 flywheel on the OM616 in the 200D 2.4. It had
a big counterbalance on it. I ground off the counterbalance and
balanced the flywheel on a tire spin balance machine. Its been 17
years now and still ok, but not much use since 2007. That was over a
long weekend, and no access to machine shops. I did have access to
the tire balance machine. A guy had agreed to sell me a flywheel but
when I went to get it, he decided he didn't want to sell it. He only
had 20 some parts cars. A miniature Kaleb.
