Or, “How much do you want to pay to make it worth our while?”

They’re still harassing me about bringing my 2008 ML550 in for the brake
booster recall check. Thing is, if they check it and find that it is affected
(I’m pretty sure it’s not) they won’t let you drive the car off the lot. Or so
I’ve been told.

I have not built one but I agree there's nothing to them but a box and a pump.

I bought a cheap HF one years ago. Used it a few times, then it ended up
sitting for a long time. Don't even know if it still works. But it worked fine
at the time and I'd guess it's as cheap as anything you'd make yourself from
comparable parts.

I used a strong solution of simple green as the cleaner, IIRC. Didn't want it
to be anything flammable.

If you make one out of plastic I'd be cautious about using any flammable
solvent. Plastic will melt quickly in a fire and then you've got a big problem
on your hands.

I've been thinking of making one using an old stainless darkroom sink when
I get around to rebuilding an aircraft engine. A 5 gallon can of solvent
(mineral spirits, paint thinner, etc.) and pump and a filter of some kind
and some hose.
I was buying parts cleaner solvent in a 5 gallon can from Tractor Supply,
but I can't find it on their website now. I use it with a siphon sprayer
and air hose to wash down the Cessna engine and belly each year.

With a generous handful of annoying issues:

*Original Car radio does not work and sometimes the window switches will
not roll down the windows. SRS light is on. Center ac vent is stuck closed.
*
*These are Common W124 problems that are easily fixable if you have the
time.*
* Interior is near perfect! *

The W124 clutches don't typically leak out like the later W140 ones. The
bimetallic spring gets ‘tired” and fails to engage at the proper temperature,
if at all. You can bend the bracket the holds the spring to change the point
of engagement, but after a while even that won’t get it to work. Someone has
bent the crap out of the bracket on mine, so I’m not even going to consider
reusing it - I want to install a new one.

And mine doesn’t appear to engage at all, which is really noticeable at idle in
traffic on a hot day.

I use FCP all the time. I’m trying to get a good deal on an ACM brand
fan clutch for my 400E, part number 119 200 01 22. It’s URO, ACM or OE
which is stupid big bucks.

Importec only has URO. No way. FCP has it but they’re expensive.

The Self Leveling Suspension is generally unique to the wagon.

* I like the wagons, and like the SLS.

* I have a few wagons, none with good engines. One just worn out.

* I had SLS pump trouble on one of the wagons and gather parts and
got new seals and managed to get one non-leaking pump. But it's
  not really in good shape.

* Every wagon _I_ have looked at has an abused SLS system. The
best have had old, cruddy oil. The worst are dry so the pump
  runs without lube!

* I have a few sedans with viable engines - but no SLS pump drive

* To retain SLS, I need to put a SLS head on. Or machine the
sedan head. Or figure out a way to use some other pump, maybe
electric. Or buy a "new" pump for about the same - or more -
  than a parts car.

* Therefore, I would like to improve my wagon situation and so am
on the lookout for good cars, parts cars, or engines.

yet, but am just planning for the future when they are even more scarce.

If anyone has a parts wagon in their area that is worth looking at, let me
know.  Diamond blue, with Blue interior preferred, but not necessarily
required.  IF it is awesome enough, I certainly would have it shipped to

I would, but I am not "THAT" interested. If it also had a blue interior I
may have tried a little harder I don't need a parts car yet. The
wagon formerly known as "Andrew's" is running better than ever and every
little thing I do makes it that much more AWESOME! Even my wife is loving

I told the seller that if he got a Florida title that I would come and
check out the car with intent to make an offer, but without the FL title, I
was going to pass. All I can do about it as I don't want to eat a bowl of
"should have had a Florida title" BS... I really don't "need" a parts car,
yet, but am just planning for the future when they are even more scarce.

If anyone has a parts wagon in their area that is worth looking at, let me
know. Diamond blue, with Blue interior preferred, but not necessarily
required. IF it is awesome enough, I certainly would have it shipped to
me. Clear title a must! hahaha!

Make sure you get it all notarized. Even with that I would still
have him get a title and then transfer it to you. I think there
is a penalty to be paid because it wasn't titled in Fl right
away. Offer him $500 as is with the title the way it is or $2000
with a good Fl title.

Did they write in the current owners name in the title as the buyer to transfer
it to? If so he needs to get the title in his name. If the person is named on
the title now just signed it and the buyers space is blank, then all you have
to do is put your name in as the buyer.

with the bill of sale, you might be ok, unless you need to show a bill

I had a similar issue with my 1962 300SE that came out of California. And all
I can say is that if you haven’t ever dealt with the CA DMV, you’re a very,
very lucky person.

I walked into the Florida tax collector’s office with a bill of sale and a
letter from the attorney who probated the estate the car came out of stating
that the car was a part of an estate they had power of attorney for the owner
and that they were conveying ownership to me. The folks in FL couldn’t have
cared less. No CA title - no title in Florida. Went back to the attorney who
told me “tough beans” and ultimately the State of CA. Essentially they said
that the only way I would get a clear title was to pay the 5-6 years worth of
non-operation fees and penalties (in person!) That was about $1800 at the time.
 Yeah.

I ended up paying about $500 to a company in Alabama that washed the title and
sent me a clean AL title in my name. Walked into the FL tax collectors office
the next week and walked out with a FL title and registration.

Yeah, this has all sorts of butthurt all over it. Florida isn’t going to let
him off the hook on this because they want their pound of flesh. You can do
“pass through” titles in Florida but only by dealers that I know of. Otherwise
you’ve got to title and register the car within the statutory time frame (30
days?) or the owner has to pay big penalties.

I don’t see how this guy thinks he’s going to unload the car without a valid
Florida title. Florida is a lot like CA in the way that it gets its claws into
the transaction whether you like it or not.

In some states if theres a significant delay between when the title was signed
and when the sale went through you might be charged a fee. I had to pay an
extra $50 on the Jetta because the previous owner had signed and dated the

get him to spend the bucks tomorrow to get the title in his name.  Then
he can sell it.    Then you can buy it.  Maybe even offer to pay the
title fee for him as part of the sale.

If you "skip a generation" then you have to be sure the title does not
have his name as the buyer and does have the seller signed off.  then
with the bill of sale, you might be ok, unless you need to show a bill
of sale for tax purposes, in which case the bill of sale seller needs to
match the title seller.

Re: [MBZ] Parts car for Kyle!

2017-03-01 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I’m not sure what Florida will do if there is no title. If the car was exempt
from a title in the Carolinas it might not matter. What’s going to happen is
that Florida is going to look up the VIN and see where it’s from and who’s
shown as the owner. If that doesn’t match what you have you’re going to have
trouble.

The alternative is to have the title “washed” by one of the title services you
see listed in Hemmings and other places that deal in classic and vintage cars.
It will probably cost you a good $1000 to do.

If you have the time you might want to call the tax collector’s office in your
county and talk to someone about it. If you go into the tax collector cold
you’re liable to come out without a title and be very unhappy.

Dan - been there, done that in Florida

When I bought my 124 cabriolet, it had been abandoned at a garage and the
tow truck guy (a retired cop) went through the hassle of getting a new
title issued. Here in SC the deal is the new "owner" sends a registered
letter to the last registered owner's address, I think the letter basically
says that if the registered owner doesn't respond in 90 days or some time
period, the state will cancel the old title and issue a new title to the
new owner. Once the 90 days are up with no response to the state, new
owner can get a new title issued.

Check with your local sheriffs office or municipal police, they may even
have the info online.

Jerry has to go to the DMV to get his title before he can sign it over to

I will see where this ends up but I am not happy about the title thing. I

If it was low in back, and the SLS was indeed working and adjusted
properly, then IT WAS SOMETHING OTHER THAN THE SPRINGS! The stock springs
are deliberately slightly undersized, and the SLS makes up the difference.
If the springs got weak the SLS would just have to work a bit harder, and
would ultimately be unable to carry full rated load. But up 'til that
point, zero difference to ride and handling. That's how that system works.

Folks.

My wife's then driver, Volvo V40, broke a spring going over a road construction
zone pothole.

I replaced it with a lez-jokers spring and it too broke 4 days later. In both
instances the broken spring eviscerated the tyre.

My local repair shop replaced both sides with factory springs, no problems.

For me, factory springs only.

Weird.

I bought new rear springs for the S500 coupe as it was low in the back and the
SLS was working and adjusted properly. Lesjofor sent me a pair of springs that
were supposed to be the correct ones for the car. The coil ends were too small
in diameter. I took pictures of the originals and the ones they sent me, as
they pretty much suggested that I was nuts when I told them what I found.

When they got the pictures they agreed to take them back at their expense. I
asked for the correct springs and they were adamant that the ones they sent me
were the right ones.

So I said the heck with it and moved on.

My first MB spring experience with the compressor and I was amazed at how easy
it was. A little frightening with a compressed spring sitting there on the
garage floor, but a real piece of cake to R with the compressor.

Re: [MBZ] Parts story

2016-10-21 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
I bought a no-name compressor for $99, copy of the Klann, installed a pair of
Lesjofors (spelling?) S320 springs with the thickest spring shims, and could
practically watch the car sink to its previous level. Having wasted $250 to be
right where I was with the original broken springs, I threw my hands up in
disgust. Some day I'll either try the S500 Lesjofors with thin shims or order
starmarked from the dealer. Either the eBay sellers of Lesjofors are selling
fake unheat-treated Chinese crap, (my seller of course denied that possibility)
or this alleged OEM makes the worst coil springs I've seen in my life.

The car was sitting visibly high, but not badly so, when I put it on the ground.
The next morning, it was perfectly level, the springs having lost tension
overnight. When I finished resetting the transmission computer, I drove it down
to the corner and back to test drive the trans, and in that mile it had dropped
another couple of inches. Within a week it was sitting every bit as low as it
was before I replaced the two broken front springs.

The instructions with the springs said 'do not compress to coil-bind', but
that's exactly what I had to do to cram the springs into the car with the thick
shims on them. How could compressing to within 1/2" of binding be OK and binding
the springs totally ruin them? They aren't the first springs I've entirely
compressed, but they're the first springs (including JC Whitney specials) that
have ever failed on me.
