My little pushbutton Samsung Carousel II has given me zero trouble.
As best as I can recall it's the only one I've used that went more than ten
years with every display segment still working.
Bought it on sale in the Fall of 1992 for $60. Boxed it up from fall 1993 to
spring 2012, been in constant use for since then. I wish I could trust a new
$60 microwave to match that performance.

I saved the info for future reference.

I liked the comment at the end about the original Amana radar ranges.
They do indeed "run forever"   I got one at the university junk sale 20+
years ago without the glass dish at the bottom.  I never found a used
glass dish, so I bought a new one for more than the price of the oven.
It still is in use up Nort.   It works fine.   Amana  built quality
stuff back then.  I consider it the 240D of microwaves.

I was going to send this but got interrupted. Probably a good thing,
looks like your diodes are not high voltage with a big power drop.
Maybe useful later.

Do you know how to test high voltage diodes? I found a good test for
the big diode in a microwave, using a car battery and a resistor in
series with the diode. Measure the voltage drop on the diode, should
be 6 volts with the diode allowing current (proper orientation) and
then full battery voltage when you reverse the orientation. 12v
should be more than enough to flow current, a typical DMM using a 9v
battery is usually not enough voltage to test a big HV diode.

Here is the link, lots of other useful / fun reading too.

Re: [MBZ] Uh oh! (Welder question)

2019-11-23 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
You are measuring junction voltage while conducting a dribble of current. The
voltage drop across the junction is largely irrelevant, other than that the
smaller it is the less energy is wasted as heat. This might matter in some
kind of sensitive analog circuit, but this is a brute force power application.
Junction voltage varies with the current through it, the junction temperature,
and the exact chemical process details. There is no single number to measure
or compare.

If it works well, great. It's possible that your new diodes are just better
than the old, or that the failing one had partially failed for some time before
it died. Hard to know. Chances are that you only had to replace the one dead
one to be fully back in business.

The meter has (or mimics) a constant current source. In the forward
direction, the current goes through the diode and biases it into
conduction. The meter then reads the voltage drop across the diode.

In the reverse direction with a good diode, there is very little current
flowing through the diode and the current source goes to its open circuit
voltage, typically causing the meter to read infinity or its digits to
flash.

How many diodes does it take to make a buzz box buzz like a buzz box
should?   In this case 12.   It no longer has a loud buzz, but buzzes
like a buzz box should. I declare success!

Jim,  You are undoubtedly right, however I figured balancing the
readings is like balancing the injector nozzles on a good Diesel.   I
took the 12 highest and closest between the new and old.

The reference I read said they should be .50 or above.  quibbling over
.49 or .50, I agree is not significant.  My meter could be off by .01
easily.   It is off my 2-3 ohms on the ohmmeter setting, I know.

I don't think that kind of difference is generally significant. It's

The new diodes are in. Unfortunately when I went back to fleabay, I
ordered the bag of 10 in place of the bag of 20 by mistake.   I am about
to set to testing diodes.  I have to decide if I should replace just the
one that is bad, or replace 10 and reuse 2 old ones.   I had intended to
replace all 12.   As soon as I segregate bad from new and good, I'll
start putting humpty back together again.

Then, I hope the melting steel begins again.    No old microwaves to use
though.   Sorry Jim.

But if I hang around Jim and Rich long enough, I may start designing
circuits sometime.

(Actually in the 80s, when Revent wanted $200 for a timer buzzer, I went
to radiojunk and bought 12vDC buzzers and transformers and full wave
bridge rectifiers and built my own.   THat way I could make each oven
have a distinct sound so we could tell from a distance which oven had
timed out.  There were 3 double rack double chamber revents and 3
rotating ovens.    We had one guy that was deaf, so I added a red rotary
light to one oven for him as a visual timer.)

Knowing what is in there is 25 A, 400 V, package type "AR" you
just need to find anything that will mount and has specs no less

loud? Tomorrow is supposed to be 30-40º colder temp, so I thought I'd try
it when the temp is 30-40º to see if that makes a difference. It was not
hot today, about 70 or so. That should not have been a factor.

Take the welder back to Harbor Freight... ask them to replace it with a new
one..
I bet they will
Worth a try, in any case..
They now have a quite good product support in place..

yes.   30v and 150 amp or 200 amp should do it.   About $20 on fleabay
if you can wait a month for it to get here from china.  Probably for $30
or 40 I can get one quicker.

I want to dig out the original before I decide what to do.   it has 6
diodes in place of the ordinary 4.  There is a good auto electric here
that may have the originals.

Yeah, BW is an excellent repository of information from the people who have
taken the time to post things like photo DIYs of stuff, which is always a big
help understanding what you’ve got to do in the repair process.

Otherwise, it’s not far from the W123 FB group in some cases from what’s been
described.

I’m not lurking on that FB group. I’m involved with too many online forums as
it is. I really despise FB, but there are a couple of groups I want to keep an
eye on, so I belong to them and that’s it. Someone in the W123 group sent me a
copy of the person’s “request for recommendation” looking for someone to check
out a car in Tampa.

And yes, considering that time is money, I think $150 is a fair price for the
level of detail and scrutiny I provide. We’ll see.

Why not? You can run the VIN and see what color it's supposed to be,
beforehand. Have Kaleb run a Carfax. Hell, you could take additional pictures,
explain all the nitpicking points, and make a very nice digital, printable
portfolio.

Eh, make it $150

I didn't realize that you were lurking on that FB group. It is entertaining,
I'll say that. I wonder how many of those folks are lurking here?

Mismatched paint for sure. The problem is that if you check it out for one or
the 123 fake book people they probably won’t listen to what you have to say

OK, it is a 1991 300e. I had forgotten what year it was, and if it was M103 or
M104. Had to go find the original post.

Engine wiring harness? According to wikipedia, a 1991 is a M103. Other than
potentially a bad head gasket, the engine is pretty reliable. But by 1991 the
self destructing wiring harnesses may be a factor. Could be a bad engine
harness or throttle body. Coil could be bad. (As could be the HV wire from the
coil to dist.) Fuel/filter could be bad.

http://www.mercedesdefects.com/2008/04/wire-harness-defect.html Scary
reading. Makes me want to stick with 87 or older Diesels. I know the wiring
problems with the 93 E320 made me want to get rid of it. It was a pretty green
car, but after seeing the wiring harness to the throttle body with only dust
for insulation, I just wanted it gone, down the road. I've never been so
happy to see a car leave!

If there are sparks jumping around, be careful with ether. One good test
before ethering is to crank it on a dark, foggy, wet night, and see if there
are sparks jumping around under the hood. I have seen some cars that look like
a light show. You don't want to spray ether in that environment. On those,
you start by changing the plug wires.

Better yet, take some starting fluid and give it a whiff -- if it
fires, it's fuel.

And another weird thing that has happened to me: We have mice like you
wouldn't believe living in the middle of farm fields, and once I came
home to find the station wagon off the drive in the woods. Had visions
of my mother confusing the gas and brake and having to make her quit
driving, but she told me it lurched off on her when she tried to back
up, quit, and wouldn't restart.

Took the air cleaner off the try the starting fluid trick (carb
cleaner works too), and found that the breather had gotten dislodged
and a mouse had dragged a pecan done into the clean side of the air
filter and chewed it up. The shell was in a couple pieces, and one
fell into the throttle and another held the air meter flap half way
down. Picked them out and the car ran fine once I charged the batter
back up.

Mom stepped on the gas to back up, the shell fell into the throttle so
it took off, and then another bit flooded it out.

2018-03-26 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Better yet, take some starting fluid and give it a whiff -- if it fires, it's
fuel.

And another weird thing that has happened to me: We have mice like you
wouldn't believe living in the middle of farm fields, and once I came home to
find the station wagon off the drive in the woods. Had visions of my mother
confusing the gas and brake and having to make her quit driving, but she told
me it lurched off on her when she tried to back up, quit, and wouldn't restart.

Took the air cleaner off the try the starting fluid trick (carb cleaner works
too), and found that the breather had gotten dislodged and a mouse had dragged
a pecan done into the clean side of the air filter and chewed it up. The shell
was in a couple pieces, and one fell into the throttle and another held the air
meter flap half way down. Picked them out and the car ran fine once I charged
the batter back up.

Mom stepped on the gas to back up, the shell fell into the throttle so it took
off, and then another bit flooded it out.

Life is always an adventure, eh?

yeah, I had coils go out on M103 and M116 engines at least. the thing
that makes me think it could be fuel is that he said the transmission
was shifting late. that happens when the engine is starved for fuel.
Take a plug along and see if it sparks while cranking. if yes, then
crack the fuel line (or an injector line) and see if it spurts fuel when
cranked.

to git far in the hole, you need compression (air), far (spark at the
right time) and fuel. (Benzin)

Ha I think I am going to keep this E300 now that I have it running well,
or at least try to sell it for some good money now not Okie money.  I
need to check the GPs on it though, see what those codes are about. I
don't need another car but it is not bad, would need a new set of tires
if I was to drive it much.

The owner replied to my query of where it is, it is about an hour away.
I axed him for interior pics, if I don't hear back I'll call him to try
to go look at it the next coupla days, maybe take the trailer and some
$$ and see what I can do.

You did not read the ad carefully. It is not the rod bender. It is the

Paternal grandfather owned taverns and bowling alleys all his life in the St.
Louis area, and as a result was beholden to the August Busch family. Busch
Bavarian and Lowenbrau were the swills of choice around my house growing up. I
would point out that we were allowed to drink beer as early as 10-12 years old.
Wasn't a big deal around my house.

Maternal grandmother, who lived well into her 90s, drank a can of Old Milwaukee
and ate a bowl of Frost Loops cereal (dry) every night before retiring. I used
to make beer runs for her when I was driving age.

Re: [MBZ] uh oh Oil Thread

2017-06-30 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
Makes sense to me. I think this is especially true if one is not trying to
stretch the oil change interval too long. When I worked at the Oldsmobile and
Honda dealership, a lot of GM customers would ask about synthetic oils or long
life oils. That particular dealership charged $9.72 for oil changes with bulk
Pennzoil 10W30. If the customer was changing it every 3,000 miles or so, I was
of the opinion that even cheap bulk Pennzoil was fine. At 3,000 miles in a
older technology GM engine, it wasn't going to make much difference what oil
they used.

I believe that Marshall used to say that any modern oil, synthetic or
conventional, was a much better oil that what was available when the OM61x
engines were designed. I don't see why that logic would not extend to Don's
BMW, as long as the oil meets the spec that his engine calls for.

2017-06-30 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
Luckily on this car (the 99 740iL with 105K miles), it doesn't use or leak any
oil. Since I have been driving so much lately I pushed it a little longer than
I normally do. I had driven almost 10,000 miles on the Mobil 1 and it never
needed a top up. My other one with 234K miles has only needed a half quart in
7,000 miles. And that was only once or twice.

My wife's Cadillac SUV is a completely different story. It will need 1.5
quarts in 3,000 miles. It takes 6 qts for an oil change. AND it has 130K
miles on the 3.6 engine that most owners report will use 1-2 qts in 4-5,000
miles.

Yea, I usually don’t worry about it. When I had my diesel, I was more
concerned. In older cars, I was never convinced synthetic was really
necessary. This BMW always had Mobil 1 – according to the records/receipts.
So, I thought I would stick with it. The only reason I even thought about it
was because I wondered if I should change it myself. With the Schaeffer oil it
dropped the price of the oil change down almost $15 and at that point, it cost
about the same as I would spend buying oil and filter. So, it was a no brainer
at that point.

I've given up on worrying about oil, if it meets a reasonably current
specification I use it and don't worry about it.

Our '05 VW Golf TDI REQUIRES a specific spec of oil which is relatively hard to
find. Valvoline makes the only oil that meets the spec that you can find at
most FLAPS. I started using it in the pickup because the Valvoline place is
easier to get into than the Mobil place... Pickup doesn't seem to care.

Wait 5000 miles and pull a sample for analysis, then you'll really know whats
going on in there...

I had to get my oil changed on my BMW. There is a small shop down the street
from my office and I know the Manager. His wife is a lawyer and he had a good
reputation. He has worked on all of my cars and always treated me well. So,
he has done the last several oil changes on both my cars and my wife's SUV. My
car takes 7.5-8 qts. I had previously priced the 5 qt jugs of Mobil 1 to try to
decide if it was worth it to do it myself. Once I buy two of the 5 qt jugs and
a filter, it hardly saves me any money to do it myself. I decided to have him
do it yesterday. I asked if there was a cheaper Full Synthetic oil that I
could use. He told me uses Schaeffer oil. His job sells the oil and the
supplements so I was still wondering about it. He told me he uses exclusively
in his farm tractors. He has a farm and has two tractors that cost $300,000
each and he said he trusts the Schaeffer oil to use in them. I decided to try
it.

So, does anybody have any experience with this oil? This is the oil

I'm not really sure why anyone would really care about this. Except, I
guess when the whistle was blown the value of the cars declined, but
that is not a particularly rational response, the car does exactly what

The New Jersey suit was filed by the law firm Hagens Berman, which has

I won't use Rotella. The synthetic is nothing special and
the dino is inferior to Delo or Mobil 1300. But I don't have

Re: [MBZ] Uh oh! Oil info

2015-11-17 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes
A trucker once told me that Cummins engines would go 350K before overhaul using
Rotella, and those using Delo would go 450-500K before overhaul. He said major
truck lines used Rotella because it was cheaper, and independents used Delo.

I bought the first Beetle for $275 because it had a brake fluid leak no one
could find, (It was between the double fire walls), and one cylinder was
missing. A mechanic told me to put RPM Delo (Delo before Big Oil bought the
company), and in a month it was running smoothly on on all four cylinders. I
used Delo in all Mercedes with good results befor Mobil 1 came on the market.

Hmmm - that laptop sounds handy. Is it different from an OBD-II reader? How
does it connect? I might be needing one of those in the future

The connection is the same as an OBD-II reader and it can perform all the
OBD-II functions plus a bunch more things.
Your Passat requires the more expensive cable but it can do a lot more than my
car can handle. For instance if you had different size tires it can correct the
speedo. Theres a limit but I think its around 10% change...
