Re: [MBZ] W123 main fuel filter bolt is cross-threaded = buggah!
Denouement should have been italicized - sorrry. This was my attempt at keeping up with the sophisticated chatter that characterizes this group. ;) Anyway, I did mount the new filter on the new bolt, and all went well, except that the car would run and die even though I primed the little pump. So I disconnected the filter to make sure it was full of fuel [it was] and re-primed until my arm just about fell off. Then I started the engine again and it purred like a kitten without dying. I love these cars. In my defense, I inherited an abuse problem from the PO, who was probably a butcher. The bolt that went south had been giving me fits since day 1 of owning this car, 10 years ago. The very first time I attempted to change the main fuel filter I neeeded a wrench to keep the filter from turning along with the bolt. And after installing the new filter, fuel leaked from the filter-canister interface. What is the size in mm of the bolt head? (Same as the wrench size) 123s are 19mm OM603 uses 14 mm I think. That should tell you if you need the old or new type filter. Suggestion -- get a neighborhood kid who isn't a buff squash player like you to spin on the oil filter for you. Maybe a band kid like me. When I was at CGAS Cape Cod, we had a mechanic who had played football (as a lineman) for one of the big southern universities. He kept putting on the prop oil plugs finger tight and stripping threads. The E-8 told him he could check the oil but had to have one of us put the plug back in. Never stripped out another one the whole time I was stationed there. There is the early style for 617, then the last style which he has. Its not the same as the 603 so it probably just a 84-85 thing. The bolt hole in the older type 123 filter is larger than the OM603 type filter.
