Re: [MBZ] W123 main fuel filter bolt is cross-threaded = buggah!

2009-04-08 Thread andrew strasfogel
Denouement should have been italicized - sorrry. This was my attempt at
keeping up with the sophisticated chatter that characterizes this group. ;)

Anyway, I did mount the new filter on the new bolt, and all went well,
except that the car would run and die even though I primed the little pump.
So I disconnected the filter to make sure it was full of fuel [it was] and
re-primed until my arm just about fell off. Then I started the engine again
and it purred like a kitten without dying. I love these cars.

In my defense, I inherited an abuse problem from the PO, who was probably a
butcher. The bolt that went south had been giving me fits since day 1 of
owning this car, 10 years ago. The very first time I attempted to change
the main fuel filter I neeeded a wrench to keep the filter from turning
along with the bolt. And after installing the new filter, fuel leaked from
the filter-canister interface.

What is the size in mm of the bolt head? (Same as the wrench

Andrew, do you still have the old filter to carefully compare thread size
and pitch? The bolt hole in the older type 123 filter is larger than the
OM603 type filter. If my memory serves, it also has a larger thread pitch,
and the newer filter has a smaller pitch (finer thread)

2009-04-07 Thread Wonko the Sane
Suggestion -- get a neighborhood kid who isn't a buff squash player like you
to spin on the oil filter for you. Maybe a band kid like me.

When I was at CGAS Cape Cod, we had a mechanic who had played football (as a
lineman) for one of the big southern universities. He kept putting on the
prop oil plugs finger tight and stripping threads. The E-8 told him he
could check the oil but had to have one of us put the plug back in. Never
stripped out another one the whole time I was stationed there.

I ran diesel purge through the 85 300CD, but when I attempted to change
the main fuel filter I couldn't tighten the filter more than halfway up the
threaded bolt in the filter housing. I assume that the threads on the bolt
are butchered, although visually they looked normal. I tried a couple
filters but the same problem - wouldn't tighten past a certain point. :((

So what is this bolt called and is it dealer only? Does anyone have the
part number?

This would be a free part at any reasonable junkyard in person, and
maybe $5 shipped. There are junkyards in Oregon that probably have 20

What's the chance that Andrew has an early (123) type filter and
since his car is an 85, it has the later OM603 type fuel filter? (and
bolt!) I believe the later bolt would go in the filter and act as
though it is stripped or cross threaded.

Andrew, do you still have the old filter to carefully compare thread
size and pitch? The bolt hole in the older type 123 filter is larger
than the OM603 type filter. If my memory serves, it also has a
larger thread pitch, and the newer filter has a smaller pitch (finer thread)
