You folks must be seeing different photos than I am. It certainly looks 
to be an early W114/115. If I recall correctly, there was a revision in 
the style at some point and the newer models have a shorter grill and a 
assume, a lower hood line to match. This one does not appear to have the 
correct foglights. The ones on it are too big.

My friend CB rented a tiddler somewhere in France last year and stopped to 
top it up. Didn't get far when it quit because, yes, it was a diesel but so 
quiet (Renault, I think) he didn't catch on.

The tow to a dealer where the tank was drained and refilled made the total 
cost a bit of a gasper. I was surprised he admitted it.

You are wrong. 1969 was the model year when the wheelbase was lengthened 
and production start was September 1968.

I owned a 1968 911. I also picked up a 1968 911L at Zuffenhausen in 
September 1967. Both SWB cars.

Granddaughter lives in Winston-Salem, NC. and needs tires for her '05 Honda 
Civic which grandpa is going to buy her as a Xmas present..  Consumers 
Reports tests show that Michelin HydroEdge tires have the best combination 
of wet road, ice, and snow driving characteristics.

In the all season grand touring category, Michelin Primacy MXV4 and General 
Altimax HP are the two highest ranked tires. I like the all seasons even outside 
of the snow belt because they usually work great in rain, and it can snow just

The US used to use an all Imperial system.

I have a few tires about here that still have numbers like
30x9.50R15. Meaning 30 inches outside diameter, 9.5 inches
wide, mount on a 15 rim.

I don't see how the p-metric measurements are an improvement...

Since getting the benz a couple of years ago now, I've been using Shell
Rotella with pretty good results.  What made me decide to use it was the
higher levels of zink.  The car gets a lot of city driving, and it has a lot
of miles, so I change quite often.  I can never to find the deals on Mobil 1
that seem to be available to those in the U.S., so Rotella seems to be a
good oil with what I'm looking for, with a good price.  I've only ever used
factory filters with it from the dealer.  I think it's a 15/40 too, which I
run year round, hot humid summers, and cold winters.

My '83 240D started perfectly this morning at 15F with CONVENTIONAL (Delvac 
1300) oil in it. I'm not going to put M1 in that car as it leaks a quart in 800 
miles and has a working block heater...

Bounced it against maximum velocity this morning on the way to work. Car is 
running great.

 I have never been in an SA-16. The USAF flew those. But I had 1500+ hours
in
 the beloved HU16E.

 We didn't need no stinkin' air speed stuff once we left the runway,
because
 Petty Officer Don (then) was sitting in the nav position running Loran-A
and
 could give a DR of how fast we were going.

 But ... yea, we had a TAS indicator. Told the Officer Pilots when to pull
 back and shut their eyes as they left the runway.

 Joking aside, this is one of those really cool USCG secrets. Other than in
 the C-130, it was enlisted crew (and sometimes even in the 130) who were
 doing the nav. On our patrols, we'd be 200 miles east of Cape Cod and it
was
 the enlisted guy who was telling the pilots where to turn the airplane,
 based on what targets were on radar. No radar display in the driver's seat
 -- nav had the display.

 The pilot and copilot took off and then pretty much turned it over to nav,
 who was often an E-4. Other than maybe RDF, the pilots only knew where
they
 were if they listened to the nav guy (me). Home was 270 +/- 20 degrees.

 And this was all Loran A, a chart, and a mile wide grease pencil. A guy in
 his early 20s held the grease pencil. But we almost always came home
alive.

doesn't make it an American system,...   ;-)


   judging by the fact that most all auto mfrs wheel diameters i can 
recall having seen (including all our MBZs) seem to be sized in inches, 
i'm guessing it's a pretty good chance that's what at least most of 
Europe and Asia use as well.

seem to turn on wheels with diameters sized in inches, i don't know if 
i'd say especially; i'd say including   ;-)
   i hope if someone is familiar with some other standard, they'll pipe 
up and clue us in as to what and where it is.

Yes they do, not sure how it came about but I suspect back in the good 
old days it was all imperial (die Englishers) and all metric (die 
Europeans) but then the two came together as the car market became 
global. Rims stayed imperial and the width became metric, which made 
life easier because the width goes up 5mm at a time and rim diameter 
goes up an inch at a time. Would not want the mess of 5 1/16 x 15 with a 
aspect ratio of 65, what is 65% of 5 1/16?
The imperial measurement of rim diameter is more of an convention, there 
was an attempt to metricize it but it failed, more than likely due to 
the imperial nations.
Personally I have no problem with the system, it works well, people know 
approximately what a 15 inch tire is and the tire shop knows what size 
tire goes on your car.

web site today, as follows:

205 ... how wide the tire is
65 ... how tall the tire is
15 ... the diameter of the rim

Why would a 205/65 and a 195/65 be any different at the speedometer?

of the tire, as a *percentage* of its width.

205 is 205mm wide, 65 means 65% as tall as it is wide, so 
205*.65*2/25.4+15=25.5

195*.65*2/25.4+15=25.0

My understand, the aspect ration is expressed in a percentage of the width
of the tire (sidewall to sidewall, not tread width).

So you got it right, the 65 is the wall height, it's just represented as a
percent of the width, not a number to indicate a size in itself, if that
makes sense. ie, a 65 aspect ratio on a tire that is 205 wide, will be
different in mm or cm's than would be a 65 aspect ration on a 305 width
tire.

I'm sure the engineer types will explain it much better, or correct me where
I'm wrong. :-)

I am having a difficult time convincing myself that a 65 isn't a 65, no
matter how wide the tire is. Just because the tire is wider, it shouldn't

diameter goes up as the width goes up from 185/65-15 to 195/65-15 to 205/65-15?

It's because the 65 is NOT the SAME TYPE of number as the tread width or
the wheel diameter.

The tread width is a dimension (distance): 205 millimeters.

The wheel diameter is also a dimension: 15 inches.

The aspect ratio is NOT a dimension, is a percentage: 65%.

The height of the tire, then, is a percentage of the width. For the same
percentage, if the width goes up, the height goes up. (The aspect ratio is
the height of the tire -- in millimeters -- divided by the width of the
tire -- also in millimeters.)

maybe this explanation will help you grasp the concept: it's pretty

   you need to get the idea that the '65' is a measurement out of your 
head; it's a *ratio*, not a fixed measurement.

   per the Tire Rack site:
The second number is the aspect ratio. This is a ratio of sidewall 
height to width.


   in the old days when we were upsizing tires, the old rule-'o-thumb 
was that for approximately every 2 sizes up you'd go in width, you'd 
have to come *down* one size in Aspect Ratio to maintain a rollout that 
was the same as what you started with.

I am used to it. My parents said I was stubborn. I always assumed I was the
only one who saw the reality others couldn't see, sort of like Thoreau. I am
sometimes still like that.

The fact is that it isn't that big of a deal. I will just see what true
speed is on my GPS and adjust the needle accordingly on the speedometer.
Need to pull the cluster anyway to fix that damn'd broken-odometer water
torture clicking. I am sure not going to trash $400+ worth of still-good
tires just to make the speedometer read correctly. And until I fix it, I
will know that indicated 60 is actually 65, or plug in the GPS.

it's going to be off by a *percentage*, not a fixed number. for example, 
that might mean 2 MPH off at an indicated 25, 4 MPH at an indicated 50,

Did your SA-16 have a true airspeed (TAS) meter?  Or was it merely INDICATED
airspeed?  But didn't you use TAS in nav plotting?  How'd you get TAS?  Temp
and IAS on the E6B handheld nav computer?  After doing a bunch of 'em,
didn't you get so you could mentally compute TAS if you knew IAS and temp?
My B-52's had both IAS and TAS meters plus Doppler even showing wind  and
ground speed, but I suspect they had much more computer capacity than
SA-16's of the time.

If I know that my speedometer is 2% or whatever off, I just easily and
quickly and easily mentally convert it to true ground speed and leave the
speedometer alone.  If it's reading fast, it may keep SWMBO from getting a
ticket.

I have never been in an SA-16. The USAF flew those. But I had 1500+ hours in
the beloved HU16E.

We didn't need no stinkin' air speed stuff once we left the runway, because
Petty Officer Don (then) was sitting in the nav position running Loran-A and
could give a DR of how fast we were going.

But ... yea, we had a TAS indicator. Told the Officer Pilots when to pull
back and shut their eyes as they left the runway.

Joking aside, this is one of those really cool USCG secrets. Other than in
the C-130, it was enlisted crew (and sometimes even in the 130) who were
doing the nav. On our patrols, we'd be 200 miles east of Cape Cod and it was
the enlisted guy who was telling the pilots where to turn the airplane,
based on what targets were on radar. No radar display in the driver's seat
-- nav had the display.

The pilot and copilot took off and then pretty much turned it over to nav,
who was often an E-4. Other than maybe RDF, the pilots only knew where they
were if they listened to the nav guy (me). Home was 270 +/- 20 degrees.

And this was all Loran A, a chart, and a mile wide grease pencil. A guy in
his early 20s held the grease pencil. But we almost always came home alive.

Rim is a measurement
Width is a measurement
Aspect Ratio is just a percentage of the width.

I missed the beginning of this thread, how did this all start?  Just refer
to your manual and buy what the car came with.  Unless you're changing rim
sizes, or messing with other things, just stick to stock, it's a good
compromise.

difference. That's only 2mph off at 60.

It is different in Iowa -- we are further east than you are. In Maine, it

originated, so if it's unmarked at point of origin
then all bets are off.

Unix systems, from day one, have used GMT for ALL time
stamps, only the display routines converted to local time,
for local consumption.  Stupid PC's used local time for
everything...  Guess which systems don't have problems
with time correlation in a geographically large network?

Jim, your Windows time / date stamp info is old. For quite a while,
Windows has used the same system as Unix to set email time / date stamps. 


This problem manifests itself in one of 2 ways:

The sender's computer is not set to auto-adjust for daylight savings time.
The user manually adjusted the clock to the correct time during the time
shift, moving GMT off one hour. And since all calculations reach back to
GMT, the outbound email is off by one hour.

The receiver's computer is not set to auto-adjust for daylight savings time.
The user manually adjusted the clock to the correct time during the time
shift, moving GMT off one hour. And since all calculations reach back to
GMT, the inbound email is off by one hour in the other direction.

This also affects appointment calendars.

In both cases, the symptoms will disappear when we come off of daylight
savings time.

And since Kaleb's computer appears to be the only one with the 1 hour time
shift, it's his machine that's set wrong.

Don,

 

More often than not this is caused by a desktop clock that is not set-up to
auto-adjust for daylight savings time.

 

This could be an issue with your machine or with Kaleb's machine  is most
likely Kaleb's machine, but is never an issue with the ISP. They just pass
email traffic.
