Oh yeah.  I have many thousands of miles on at least a few dozen
tires I have put plugs in.

Get the gooey plugs, a reamer, and a "T" handle plug inserter.

Getting warm. No aux battery, that’s the main (only) one. Coolant tank is full 
of plain water, which is why you don’t see anything.

What about the AC condenser?

One time I remembered there was an old blade stowed in the handle of my Stanley 
knife so I used the old one and threw it away. 
Now that I've got a box of single edge razors for my razor scraper, six cents 
worth of razor blade would do the job.

We have a winner!!

Unless there’s something I’m not familiar with on this model, the car has no 
auxiliary fan in front of the condenser. I found a double fan setup in the EPC, 
but for the life of me I couldn’t find abandoned wires or connectors. If anyone 
out there with an ML can give me an idea of where the electricals are for the 
fans if they exist (Mitch?) I would appreciate it.

There’s nothing based on appearance or things in this area that would suggest 
auxiliary fans existed. Paint or dirt patterns, nothing that I could see. I 
will say that the condenser is huge! The AC, when the blower is working, is ICE 
COLD.

So's mine.
The deer damaged the plastic and the fan rubbed the shroud. 
When I found out I could drive around in 90 degree weather with the AC on and 
not miss it, I decided not to buy a replacement. Florida Man with a V8 might 
feel differently.

No, leave the pressure in the tire.  If it does go low before you get the
plug in, you'll have to pump it back up so the tread is stiff enough that
you can push the plug in.

I ask my parts guy to check the EPC for me with the VIN.

I can’t imagine it didn’t have them, but I’m trying to figure out where the 
wiring harness is, as I see nothing anywhere near the area that appears to be 
cut off or abandoned.

 opening the drain.
 
 I turn it a few more times alternating between a monkey wrench and a 
 crescent wrench to turn it. Coolant is coming out now, but not a big gush. 
 Hmm.
 
 So I work on replacing the coolant reservoir. Not bad, a few hoses were 
 reluctant to come off, but I got them off without damage eventually. 
 Installed the new reservoir, not a big deal.
 
 I move to the right rear to do the caliper. I break the hose fitting

I think it’s got an electric fan on the back of the radiator. I’ll have to 
look, but I’m pretty sure that’s the setup.

I can see where that might preclude the need for an aux fan.

[MBZ] Next ML Question

So the right rear tire has some really weird wear on it. Inboard part of the 
tread is really worn while the outside part of the tread isn’t, maybe 3/16 
variation in tread height. It doesn’t look even, either, like it’s scalloped.

I don’t see anything amiss with the wheel, like curb rash, that would indicate 
it’s bent or damaged. Suspension in this area looks good and consistent with 
the other side. No strange noises or handling issues while driving.

Not sure what, if anything, I can do at this point short of maybe asking my 
tire guy to see if the rim is bent. Any suggestions on possible things I could 
do to see what’s up?

I know on the 210 the right rear tire wears a lot faster than the left side. 
Also I have the same issue with the inner wear on line which has a squeaky 
support joint on that side I need to replace.

If the tire wear is uniform on the offended side, it is unlikely rim is
bent, it is more likely there is a suspension rubber allowing the wheel to
scrub rather than run true with the other three..
Suggest a in depth look at all suspension components, and a 4 wheel
alignment check. As Kaleb has same issue, it suggests to me there is a
"weak point" in suspension rubber letting the wheel lay out of square and
straight alignment.

[MBZ] And Another ML Question...

This car has xenon headlights. A part of this system is two level sensors, one 
at the front and one at the rear. The sensor is bolted to the vehicle frame and 
a lever on the sensor, using much like a sway bar link, is connected to the 
lower control arm at that location.

I found the rear sensor disconnected at the right rear sway bar, the clip that 
held it in place missing. Easy enough to resolve.

While working under the car last night, I found the front sensor on the right 
front suspension with a broken bracket where it attaches to the lower control 
arm. I removed the connecting link and discovered that the ball joint on the 
bottom end was completely frozen in place. I soaked it with some Kroil and 
found when it came loose that the socket was completely destroyed by corrosion 
and the only thing holding the ball in place was the remains of the rubber boot.

The connecting link is about 4”-5” long, with a ball joint at each end with a 
threaded stud that’s maybe an M6 or M8 thread on it. The part from MB 
iswait for it...$235.00

Yeah, I don’t think so.

So I’m wondering if anyone might know a source for something like this?

Probably a bad pivot somewhere in the rear suspension. 
Jack it up and see if there's any slop. 
If it needs a wheel bearing I've got an extra Timken on hand.

Great idea, Mannfred! The only concern would be if it’s at or near the correct 
length. The part on this car is a fixed length, there’s no adjustment. I 
realize the W123 part would be adjustable, but if it’s too long or short it 
wouldn’t of much use.

If I knew which one was right hand thread I would just buy two of them and get 
some threaded rod to make one the right length.

was flakey anyway then finished it off pushing it all the way to the floor

You still have air in there. If it has abs, be sure there is not a bleeder
screw on that pump somewhere. The MC is probably fine. Be sure any calipers
are on right side up; if the bleed screws are not on the top then the sides
are switched and it will never firm up. You should run quarts of brake
fluid through the lines and be sure to close the screws while fluid is
still coming out. Push the pedal while pressurizing the system to bleed the
MC also. Once the fluid is coming out clean you can just dump it back into
the pressure bleeder and run it through again.

The bleed screws on the fronts are on top as are the rear wheel 
cylinders.  I had the bleeder pressured up to 20 per the instructions 
and when the screws are open at the wheels the fluid sort of just runs 
out, not under a great deal of pressure shooting out like I am used to 
when opening it when having the pedal pressed. When I opened the RR 
screw which was the first one I did, I did get air coming out then clear 
fluid.  When I did the LR next, I never seemed to get any air out.  I 
did not seem to get air out of either of the fronts either, but since 
the front circuit was not open I would not think it got air in it.  It 
does have ABS but I am not aware of a bleed screw on it.

it just feels like it has no brakes at all, pedal seems to be going

to the floor.  I am sure the rear drums are not adjusted all the way 
out

yet but I would not think that would cause it to go to the floor.  Does
this seem like I still have air in the lines or does this seem like 
a bad

master cylinder? I need to get this finished up tomorrow.

If you pumped the brakes all the way to the floor there’s a chance you damaged 
the cups on the piston in the master cylinder. Never, ever press a brake pedal 
all the way to the floor when bleeding.

Does it just go straight to the floor or does it bleed down somewhat slowly 
with your foot on the pedal?

Adjust those rear drums out before you do anything else. That won’t cure your 
lousy pedal, but it eliminates a lot of slop in the system.

This seems to be getting more complicated that I thought with the ABS 
system on this truck.  I am not sure if I should just go ahead and 
replace the MC or not for good measure.  If indeed the ABS system does 
need to be bled, it seems like a complicated procedure that requires a 
scan tool that I do not have.

I have been working on the brakes on my Suburban.  All new brake shoes, 
hardware, and wheel cylinders on the back.  Brakes were weak before but 
were OK, which I attributed to the leaking rear wheel cylinders.  I put 
everthing back together and started doing the old fashioned bleeding 
with pushing on the brake pedal and opening bleeder screw.  It was not 
working that great mainly because it is hard to get to the bleeder 
screws on the back.  I then ordered a speedi bleeder pressure bleeder.  
It arrived today, I hooked it up and pressured it up.  I then opened the 
back until all the air was out and new fluid was coming in.  Also did 
the fronts.  Afterward it just feels like it has no brakes at all, pedal 
seems to be going nearly to the floor.  I am sure the rear drums are not 
adjusted all the way out yet but I would not think that would cause it 
to go to the floor.  Does this seem like I still have air in the lines 
or does this seem like a bad master cylinder? I need to get this 
finished up tomorrow.

Check to see if just the ball/stud part is sold.  Last time I replaced a 
similar link on the SLS control valve, the two ends were about $8 each, but the 
whole assembly was $75 or so.

OK found the pack sooner then I thought. 
there are two ends one aright hand thread and 
one a left. you will need one of each for 
each of the connector bars.
the numbers are   123 328 00 63 and 123 328 
01 63 my cost $7.24 each. From those numbers 
the parts guy should be able to get the 
number of the whole assembly with bar and 
lock nuts. It is on a 83 300TD but should be 
the same for any year with the active suspension.

No.  It's easier to work on if the tire is stiff from internal air
pressure.  Not letting extra air out is especially valuable if the
means of re-inflation is a hand pump. *smiles*

Pull the nail out, use the reamer to make the hole big enough and
to clean the rubber in the hole (I like the one with stepped
diameters), and put a plug in.

As Kaleb suggested, I figured I would pop for an alignment and see what came 
out of it. I know the tire place will want to sell me a set of tires, but I can 
do an end run and avoid engaging with them on the sale. The affected tire is 
bad enough I’ll have to replace it soon.

That sounds like the same piece that is used 
on the w123 TD for the rear leveling of the 
suspension. The ends are available for like 
around $5-$8 if I remember the last ones I 
bought. Or you can get the complete piece 
with the thread part for around $40 or so.

I found mine about 200 miles after the noise started. 
By then I had 1/4" or more of axial free play at the rim when I put it on a 
hoist. 
No odd tire wear, just noise at times, which I think was the disk rubbing the 
caliper carrier.

The pedal develops a _lot_ more than 20 PSI!!  So maybe it's just
that.

Try it on another car to compare.  Maybe one without ABS?

what's going on.  She says they are having a hard time finding a source of
parts for my old car.  Damage is to the fender, turn signal, front bumper,
and the fender liner.

Unsure of the availability of parts and what the cost will be, she says
they may end up totaling the car if the cost of the parts is too high.

See if you are able to source the parts for your own self and if the shop will 
accept them for install.  Seems the insurance droid is mentally challenged.  I 
talked to the shop when the SD got hit.  Amica/Liberty mutual were head up the 
rectum about the work, but the shop was willing to work with me if I  supplied 
parts and did not whine about needing new things installed.

If there is not resistance for the slave cylinders to push
against, much of the pressure of the master cylinder will not do
much.  If that is the case, there should be front brakes - but the
pedal will not feel very stiff.

Does the pedal come up when if you pump it?  That points to
"loose" slaves and not air.

Does the pedal sink under steady pressure?  That is a leak - most
often past the piston seals in the master cylinder.
