Interesting, as I had the exact same issue with the former ML500. Pedal wasn’t 
soft or bled down, but the travel seemed way too long, even after pressure 
bleeding the system when I replaced a stuck right rear caliper. It seemed like 
it almost went to the floor before you got any braking action. A pump didn’t 
make any noticeable difference.

I replaced the master cylinder and it was much improved.

How much is a new MC?

Last time I bled brakes, following a MC replacement in a hotel parking ramp, I 
bought 20 feet of clear hose (fish tank air line, about $10 from Walmart pet 
department) and then ran a line from right rear caliper bleed screw back up to 
MC reservoir.  Open bleed, pump the brakes until no more air bubbles, repeat at 
the other three calipers, done.  I think I also needed a small can of new brake 
fluid.

got low the pedal would go all the way to the floor. Wondered if pushing it too 
far ruined the seals in the MC. It does not seems to slowly sink though but 
will drive it again and pay more attention.

Pedal does not go to the floor. Just too much travel. When I bled it this last 
time I basically ran a whole large bottle of fluid thru it. Some of the 
calipers took a while before I started seeing bubbles in the clear tube. After 
they quit I let it run for a while after before closing the bleeder.

I tried everything else and got nowhere until I replaced the MC. It wasn’t a 
bad job, kind of tight, though, like everything on these MLs. G-d forbid you 
have to replace the windshield washer fluid reservoir. That is a stinking 
nightmare.

I got my daughters 124 E320 I need to do something with. H I also have a 
606 sitting in this wrecked E300...  I wonder what the challenges would be. 
After watching that Dutch guy stuff a M120 in a 201 I guess anything is

I worked with a guy in like 1982 or so who had a white E-type coupe, black 
interior, was in beautiful shape. Got married and the new wife didn’t think it 
was appropriate so he had to sell it. I think maybe $3k or so if I recall. Even 
in today’s dollars that would be what, $10-12k?  I was not particularly partial 
to the coupes or I might have considered it.

[MBZ] Master Cylinder failure

When the MC gave up on my 115 I was sitting at a red light and the car 
crept forward. I thought I was having a senior moment or something and 
had just not held my foot on the brake pedal hard enough. Then the light 
turned and off I went. About a block later, I stepped on the brake pedal 
and it started slowly going down further than it should have. At that 
point I realized I had and issue that needed to be addressed so I turned 
around and drove it home and into the garage before it got any worse. 
There were no signs of leaking fluid so I assumed it was the MC that had 
given up.


I ordered a kit to repair it but that didn't work out. The kits 
originally came with a thin plastic tube that permitted one to slide the 
plunger in without ruining the o rings. This kit did not come with that 
and I was unable to find anything else that would work. I didn't really 
want to run the risk of damaging the o rings and having to redo the 
whole job so I just ordered a rebuilt unit and installed it. No further 
issues.

I once did a complete mechanical restoration on a 1966 E-type coupe. 
Blueprinted and balanced the engine, rebuilt carbs, etc., etc. An amazing car 
to drive when sorted. Loads and loads of fun. The best were the V12s, but from 
a performance standpoint they weren’t that great, as it added a lot of weight 
to the front end. The 3.8 was a good engine, but repower one with the later 4.2 
liter inline six and you had a serious race car.

I’ll never forget the first V12 XJ we had in the shop, a 1976 silver with 
maroon interior. Stunningly beautiful car. I drove it home one night, and was 
stunned that on a road that was 30 mph, which I thought I was doing, I was 
actually going about 60 mph! The ride was amazing, there was no indication of 
speed it was so smooth.

The washer fluid tank is a major PITA to replace. Ironic that they’re so 
brittle when they age, causing even a casual glance at one to shatter it. You 
know it’s bad when the dealer stocks them for a car that they stopped making 15 
years ago.

 Are the studs plastic? You really need metal studs for walking on ice. Using 
the pair I referenced in my last message I scoot right along with my normal 
stride.
Since its only early winter here I had forgotten to deploy them so I had to 
shuffle some on today's walk with Buster. I'll be more prepared tomorrow.

W123 diesel coupes weren’t turbo’ed until the early 80s, like the sedans and 
wagons. This one is NA and has the dreaded ACC servo. Note that they mention 
the heat and AC isn’t working. That does not bode well…

[MBZ] OT: Nothing more expensive than a cheap...

Commodore 64.
Last year I traded for a Commodore 64, I figure its time to expand my vintage 
computer collection. Well I didn't get around to doing anything with it until 
recently. I ordered an Easy Flash 3 cartridge so I could get some software onto 
it. Got that in, fired it up and, nothing. Black screen.
Fortunately this is a common problem in a C64, most likely the PLA 
(programmable logic array) chip which was a seriously weak point. There is a 
modern replacement and they're cheap so I ordered one. While I was at it I 
ordered a VIC-II since those also fail and tend to cause this issue. While I 
was at it I ordered a Dead Test cartridge so I can see if there are any other 
issues.
C64 power supplies are another known weak point that, if they fail, will 
produce high voltage and ruin the computer. Fortunately theres a guy making 
replacements.

The computer I traded away was one I'd gotten for free so I thought I was 
getting a C64 for the price of shipping. So I far I've spent just over $100 and 
I haven't gotten the machine to work yet. I'm learning a lot and its kind of 
fun. It looks like a working C64 is worth just under $100 so if the parts I've 
ordered get it working I'll probably be okay...

I think he gave it away, but I can ask mom about it.
Had the tape drive, but that might have been about the extent of the 
accessories.
He quickly set it aside for a Tandy 1000 with hard drive and letter 
quality Epson printer.

I think the biggest difference is between the 78-79 cam and the high 
lift 80+ cams.
My 1979 was an interim valve train, had the improved/harder cam and 
lifters but with the earlier geometry so no performance gain. Makes 
enough torque to spin the tires if it starts in first gear but I think 
it has less HP at high RPM.

 The C64 lived a surprisingly long life. I watched a video yesterday about a 
CPU upgrade that was made in '96...
Tandy 1000 was apparently the rocketship for the era. I actually missed out on 
the early DOS machines, my Atari 130XE was long in the tooth when I got it and 
in school we had Macs. I have a soft spot for the 9 inch all in one Mac 
machines. I've had a few but sold my last one soon after we bought our house. 
Today there is so much new hardware being made its much easier to keep an old 
computer going.

 Its probably worth more now than what you paid for it. Unfortunately the 
capacitors on those older Macs are known to fail. Standard wisdom is to recap 
any new-to-you machine since the caps will leak and cause damage.On the one 
hand its kind of rotten that it happens, on the other hand 30 years ago I'm 
sure no one thought that computer would still be used in 30 years.

I thought it had an 8086 or 8088 at 4.77MHz just like IBM, but I could 
be wrong.

For all I know it might have had a V20 or V30.
My Zenith MiniSport (RIP) has a V20, IIRC at 8MHz.

Wiki is silent as to the T1000's power, but the 1000-HX, SX, and TX had 
8088-2 CPUs running at 7.16MHz. And the TX had an 80286.


The MiniSport might have refused to power up ten years ago, but I bet 
between my T1000 and my Dad's I could come up with a functioning system. 
I'm not sure if I have enough IBM pieces to make up a PC, but I have a 
case, some power supplies, and two keyboards.


I loved those old IBM keyboards with the ALPs keyswitches, even if they 
only had ten function keys. Anybody make a PC (not AT) to USB keyboard 
adapter?

The things are magically impactful.  Some sort of thermal deployment system.  
The colder it gets, the harder the soles and the metal spikes fully deploy.  
Less cold and the traction devices retract into the softer bottom.

I did try the strap on sort, but found them hard to mount and prone to rapid 
wear with extended dog walking.  It got interesting when the thing unseats in 
mid stride with strapping rips
