There are plenty of older non DEF trucks running around here in NC. If the
situation changes, and only new trucks get to operate on the roads, there will
be even more shortages, and a huge amount of truckers will be forced to go out
of business or raise prices even higher to afford to buy expensive, new trucks.

I have a friend who has a 2013 Beetle with the same engine that has 92K on the

they age. It seems to be OK right now, but once it hits 100K, who knows. Maybe,
she should unload it while the used car market is high, and convertible season

Re: [MBZ] Truth On Repairability

2022-04-18 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
A month ago, we bought a new minivan, a 2022 Toyota Sienna. It has many
subscription based features. There’s a handy Toyota app that allows you to stop
and start your engine, lock and unlock the doors and a few other things. It’s
free for the first year, but $9.00 per month after that. That van has the most
uncomfortable seats. It does get 35mpg combined since it’s a hybrid. After
three weeks, this wasn’t enough to offset the discomfort, so it found its way
to a new owner, paid off the loan, and the 2008 Odyssey with over 164K miles is
going to stay around. The current generation Odyssey vans have a host of
recalls and issues, so we decided to get our deposit back and put some money
into the 2008. It needs some new rubber seals/weatherstrip to fix some water
leaks, it has some front suspension clunks, and it’s going to need
engine/transmission mounts soon. Compared to the new vans, it’s easier to get
into, more comfortable, has better air conditioning, and, best of all, NO CAR
PAYMENT!

[MBZ] OT Sleep Apnia and CPAp machines

2020-10-30 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
Hello listers. I remember a discussion a while back when someone (Kaleb?) was
diagnosed with sleep apnia requiring a CPAP. My wife had her sleep study a
couple weeks ago, and the report said that she had stopped breathing 12 times
in an hour. I’m a heavy snorer myself, so chances are pretty good that I also
have it. For those of you with CPAP experience, how did it work or how is it
working? has quality of sleep increased? Do you need to sleep fewer hours than
before CPAP?

[MBZ] Update on Hildegard, 1982 240D

2020-11-19 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
Hello Dieselers. The guys in the shop who replaced the engine in the 240D are
having trouble with the idle adjustments. Does anyone have the info or a link
for how to properly adjust the idle? I’ve never adjusted the idle on the IP on
any of the cars I’ve owned.
TIA,

I’m not sure. Do you adjust the IP to the proper idle and then adjust the
linkage to match?

Re: [MBZ] VW Content: Isn't Poos cute?

2020-12-07 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I haven’t personally owned any air-cooled VW’s, but my Dad owned quite a few. I
remember a 1967 Baja Bug with stinger exhaust that would backfire LOUDLY
between shifts which scared me as a kid. Years later, he bought a 1973 Beetle
for $500 that had rusted floors, and a 1964 Karmann Ghia that was hit in the
front end that he bought as a project. I helped him cut the damaged nose off
and hold the junkyard sheet metal in place so he could weld it. I also
remember starting it with a ratchet which was pretty cool! We drove it around
the neighborhood with no fenders as it sipped fuel from a coffee can just to
see what it could do. My oldest Sister had a 1962 VW Ragtop Bus, boy would I
LOVE to have that one now!

[MBZ] A Not So Good Stealership Service Experience With Der DoodleWagen

2020-12-11 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
Hello Benzers. Yesterday was Lutgart’s turn to get her yearly oil change and
address the three recalls. This also included the A service which comprised
oel/filter, fuel filter change, inspection and tire pressure check. Today,
after waiting well over an hour for pickup, we headed home. As we were slowly
trekking down the freeway in the rain at 40MPH, I consulted her for a fuel
economy check revealing only 9.8MPG! WOW! Since the fuel filter was changed, I
knew that the low mileage was due to a leak that must be pretty severe since
that is well less than half the normal fuel economy. Arriving home, there was a
strong Diesel smell around the front of the van. Also, the real time display
showed that the right front tire pressure was low and showing a hotter tire
temp than the others. This is after PROFESSIONALS serviced my van! If I knew
the location and procedure for replacing the fuel filter, I would have been
servicing my own vehicle! As the saying goes, the only way to fix it right
is to FIX IT YOURSELF! I’m going to try to not only get the service for free,
but also have them top off my fuel tank as well.

Re: [MBZ] A Not So Good Stealership Service Experience With Der DoodleWagen

2020-12-11 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I’m not sure about the tire pressure. I filled them up last month, fronts 63PSI
and rears 75PSI per spec. It was SSOOO busy yesterday When we dropped
her off that I wouldn’t be surprised that it was simply overlooked/skipped. I
plan to fill out any service quality assessment forms that I receive. Regarding
the loner car AKA courtesy vehicle, it was a GLA250 4Matic base model which
seemed to be a good little SUV. It was powered by a 2.0L 4 cylinder with an
eight-speed DSG transmission with a 0-60MPH time of 6.6sec!! Also, it was rated
at 24MPG city and 33MPG HWY, not bad for a compact SUV! While we were waiting
around for the van, we looked at several SUPS including the Mexican-assembled
GLB250, the GLC350 and the GLE 350 as well as the GLS450 which stickered at
$95K! It, as well as the $114K GLS63 AMG, were the only ones that were powered
by something other than a turbocharged 4 cylinder. The only Mercedes-Benz
equipped with a Diesel engine is the Sprinter.

At one point, I was thinking about going with a 2016 GL350 Bluetec to replace
our Honda Odyssey. I’m sure glad that the plan didn’t work out that way. The
Sprinter is everything we could ever want, plenty of space, reasonable comfort
though not quite the level of comfort of the Odyssey, but it has room for the
dog crates, paddle boards, RC cars, or whatever the haul happens to be. Our two
full-sized Goldendoodles are nearly done with their training, so they will have
a place to ride. Will it be leaking oil and Diesel when our 8-year extended
warranty is up?

Re: [MBZ] Okiebenz visits Hoovie’s Garage

2021-03-13 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
The other day, I happened to stumble upon a site listing the emissions related
problems pertaining to the Sprinter and OM642 Bluetec Diesels. It seems to be
a cascading effect as oil vapors are reintroduced via the PCV into the intake
eventually getting burned and exhausted to the DPF. Also, interrupting the
regeneration causes fuel to dilute the oil causing another host of problems
including timing chain failure as early as 80K miles. The fix was shorter oil
change intervals, better oil with esthers in it, an oil filter (Donaldson?)

Re: [MBZ] Nanny car adventure

2021-05-20 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
They even have “nannies” on RC cars. A few brands have active vehicle control
(AVC), and then, Traxxas came out with Traxxas Stability Management (TSM). It
controls traction by regulating the power of the motor/engine, and a gyro built
into the receiver regulates the steering servo to keep the car straight as it’s
sliding or bumping over rocks. Of course, for fun factor, most of the time, I
keep mine off!! On the street, it has saved me from crashes when I get a little
too wild.

Re: [MBZ] 2012 GL350 Bluetec 4Matic - 115k miles - $17,800

2021-07-04 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
There is so much that could happen with the OM 642 Bluetec engines and the
problems caused by the emissions system.

Some problems include too much fuel in the oil due to interrupting the
regeneration cycle for the DPF, inefficient combustion and soot buildup in the
oil due to the EGR, and in some extreme cases leading to timing chain where and
extreme oil consumption before 80K miles if not properly maintained. all of the
stuff that I’ve read is starting to make me consider selling my sprinter and
getting one that’s gas powered. However, I don’t think I would be too happy
with a small four-cylinder engine pulling that big van around.

Re: [MBZ] OT residential air conditioner issue

2021-07-23 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
We just had our A coil, lines and outdoor A/C unit replaced a couple months
ago. Once it was put back together, air flow wasn’t the same as before. When
they went underneath the house to check things out, they found that excess
condensation had rusted out the bottom of the air handler and a significant
percentage of air was being blown into the crawl space. The cause was believed
to be a failing condensate pump. If that’s your problem, the fix should be easy
enough.

[MBZ] I’ll be moving…

2021-07-28 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
To North Carolina! Oregon’s cost of living and property taxes just continue to
climb, and our state is becoming a cesspool of homelessness and criminal
activity. Added to all this, our HOA is full of negativity and drama, so we
started looking for someplace else to live. My BIL lives in Lexington, NC, and
things are much more peaceful there. We put our deposit on a 2501SqFt home on
1.23 acres which is currently under construction. The price is about half what
our current Oregon home is worth, so we can pay off our lone and other debt and
still have enough to put about half down on the new house. I’ve decided to sell
our Sprinter to get more liquidity to move our stuff out, get a temporary
rental and wait while our house sells. You can bet I won’t get a Blutec Diesel
Sprinter next time!
Kevin, moving out of Hillsboro, Oregon
2019 Sprinter 12 passenger 144WB, 3500mi, Low Mileage Lutgart, soon to be up

Re: [MBZ] I’ll be moving…

2021-07-29 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I have a few reasons why we want to sell the Sprinter. First, we are once again
without a driver, and I don’t want to have to pay extra to have it shipped.
Second, it’s primary use is just putting around town to here and there, lots of
idling and stop and go, none of which are good for a Diesel engine and even
worse for a modern one with DEF/DPF and EGR. Third, we could use the money for
moving expenses since we’ll have to pay for storage for our stuff so the house
can be staged properly and sold quickly. Once we get settled into the new
place, I can spend a LOT less money on maybe an older Sprinter

[MBZ] Der Sprinter wurde verkauft

2021-08-03 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
As of yesterday at 4:30 PM, I no longer have Der DoodleWagen. Lutgard will now
be serving a Russian family of 12 from Seattle, yes, EVERY SEAT TAKEN!!!
They’ll be moving up to this awesome, 3500mi Sprinter from a 2013 Sprinter,
also 12 passenger 144WB, with 165Kmi! I only took an 11% depreciation hit since
I got $53K back from my original $59K investment. There is now a very empty
side driveway waiting for the next chapter to begin. We’re planning to take the
trip cross country to NC in a used motorhome of some kind (I’m hoping for a
Diesel). There would be much more room for dogs, and the MH would be our home
until the new house is completed around Nov 1. This week, a friend offered to
drive me down to the shop where my 240D has been residing for 1.5 years. I keep
calling in to ask for updates, but I never get a return call. Wouldn’t they
want the car picked up so they could use the shop space for something else? I’m
sure they would also like the money for the parts/labor. Something isn’t quite
adding up! I’m hoping that they didn’t screw it up to the point where they
can’t fix it. My concern is that they messed up the IP. They didn’t tell me
until after the fact that the replacement engine arrived without many parts
including the IP, injectors, flywheel and harmonic balancer. Rather than
shipping it back, they swapped all of these parts from my old engine. I’ll
soon be finding out what’s really going on. They’ve told me that it seems to
run strong with no blow by, but didn’t idle properly.Of course, I’ll keep y’all
posted.

Re: [MBZ] Der Sprinter wurde verkauft

2021-08-04 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
Since they are familiar with Sprinters and put plenty of miles on them, I
figured that they must know something about the Blutec system. It’s the short
trips that are the worst. I hope it runs for a long time.
I’ll never buy another emissions choked Diesel! I was thinking about a pre-2007
Sprinter T1N with the in-line 5 2.7L if I can find one, or a Suburban/Yukon or
a Ford Expedition (I’m sure there are plenty of those in NC). The nearest MB
dealer is in Charlotte, nearly 70 miles away. My BIL would be happy to help me
service and maintain it, so I’m more inclined to get something older and
cheaper, especially since it won’t be driven daily. The area is served by Uber
and Lyft so we’re not stuck without rides even when we don’t have a driver.

My Dad and I bought our 1958 PV444 for $3000 back in 1991. It had the original
B16 engine and 3 speed transmission replaced with the B18/4 speed setup. It was
partially restored and ran very well. When we moved up to Oregon, the moving
company didn’t ship the car for 8 months as it sat in their yard and got
vandalized. I still miss that little car.

Re: [MBZ] Travel trailers

2021-08-09 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
Since it has been sitting for so long, the blower motor could also be seized.
Could the compressor be locked up as well?
For our move across country, we’re buying my nephew’s motorhome, a 2004 Itasca
Suncruiser 37B. It will also be our home while our old house sells and until
the new NC house is completed. Unfortunately, it’s a gasser, but the best
gasser setup for a large class A motorhome, the Workhorse chassis with the 8.1L
Chev/GM engine and Allison transmission. It has 46Kmi on it, everything works,
and it’s ready to go.

Re: [MBZ] Peugeots

2022-07-21 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I had a neighbor years ago (late 1980’s) in SoCal who had a fleet of Peugeot
504 Diesels. He started with a 1979, then he acquired a 1978 and finally a 1976
station wagon manny tranny. They were very comfortable and reliable. I wasn’t
into Diesels at the time or I would have tried to talk him into selling me one.
I did like the body style. They were much cheaper to purchase than a comparable
240D since he was able to purchase the 1978 for $900 in 1987 with under 100K
miles.

And most seem to be the latter. The same is true for the perspective buyers. I
had a great seller the other day who sold me an awesome X-Maxx 1/6 scale RC
truck that was nearly fully rebuilt with fresh gears and bearings other than
the brushless motor bearings. It had over $300 in upgrades as well as a brand
new body, tires and wheels, and it was priced $300 below retail. The motor
bearings are replaceable, and should make it run smoother and quieter once I
get them installed. I sold two different RC trucks to a guy within a month. I
had a pretty good reputation selling them in Oregon, so I’m trying to do the
same here in NC.

I figured out what she did. She managed to plug the adapter in upside

adapter and I can't even unplug it.

I replaced the tail light module, and problem was solved, at first. As I
was explaining to the wife what she did, which she then turned it back
to being my fault because I did not tell her how to plug it in, the damn
lights came back on. The module has 4 harnesses that plug into it. I
started pulling them and replacing, and somehow got them off. Lights
were back to working like they should. The module slides into a bracket
which them bolts to the frame. I was going to leave it loose to make
sure it actually continued to work, but then decided to go ahead and
mount it as it was working fine. As soon as I started messing with it,
the lights came back on and I could not get them back off. I looked at
the individual wires coming directly out of the connector on the truck
and none appeared to be melted. I guess I will have to take a closer
look as there has to be something melted within the harness. I hope it
did not screw up the new module, or possibly the old module was not
 really bad.

Re: [MBZ] Rescue Mission in Methalachia

2022-12-04 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I hope that the CL600AMG turns out to be a worthwhile adventure. I just read up
on it, $123K, 362HP 391Lbft torque V12 powerhouse! At 99.2% depreciation, it
should be fun if it runs or plenty of good parts.

Re: [MBZ] OT it’s COLD this morning

2022-12-24 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
Here in Lexington, NC, we woke up to an ice cold 50 degree house. It got down
to 7F last night, and at some point in the night, our heat shut off. Our
hard-wired Ecobee 4 t-stat had no power, so my first thought was a tripped
breaker. After a trip out to the cold 38F garage, my suspicion was confirmed. I
reset the breaker, and after a couple minutes, the heat pump fired up. nearly
an hour has passed, and the inside temp has risen to 60F! The heating systems
in this house aren’t quite enough to deal with this bitterly cold weather. We
have a dual zone Trane system with dual heat pumps, one for each level.
Luckily, the upstairs zone was still working. The cold has also exposed the low
quality vinyl double pane windows since cold air comes in around the side and
top seals. I’m hoping there’s a way that the seals can be replaced, or it could
be that the cold weather has shrunken the seals. The house is only a year old.

2023-01-19 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I have ridden in quite a number of those Ford Foci and Fiestas on Uber and
Lyft rides. Nearly all of the drivers said that the problem existed from the
day that they bought the car. Most of them drove their cars like that since
they didn’t have a choice, and the ones who took them in for repairs, the
problem was never fixed. That leaves an out rages number of vehicles out there
with an unfixable defect, and I hope that Ford will have to pay dearly for that!

Re: [MBZ] Retirement Ride

2021-11-09 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes

After taking the cross country trip from Oregon to North Carolina, I now
understand why many RVers choose to stay in hotels on the road. It’s not worth
the time to set up every night just to tear down the next morning. With three
people and four Doodles, the RV was the best way to travel, but it was way
easier to just park the RV, drag suitcases into the hotel, get a good night’s
sleep and continue the journey the next morning. The motorhome worked well for
our one month stay at the campground before moving into our new house. The dogs
didn’t enjoy being cooped up without a place to run, but now, they have a large
yard. Once the permanent back yard fence is installed, they will have a WHOLE
LOT more room to run.
I hope you find the perfect traveling ride.

[MBZ] Jingle Bells Mercedes Diesel Style

2021-11-29 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I thought it was time to bring this out again since I just found it again. I
originally wrote this up in 2012. Jingle Bells Diesel Mercedes Style
Jingle bells, Diesel smells, vacuum sprung a leak,
Oh what fun it is to ride in an old 240D, HEE!!

Jingle Bells, Diesel smells, Vacuum sprung a leak,
Oh what fun it is to ride in an old 240D.

Sliding through the snow,
In my old 240D,
Over the streets we go,
people pass with ease.

The seat belt buzzer rings,
But I know we're buckled tight,
If we get through this Christmas snow storm, We'll make it home tonight!

Oh!

Jingle Bells, Diesel smells, vacuum sprung a leak,
Oh what fun it is to ride in this old 240D, Hee!

Jingle bells, diesel smells, vacuum pump is weak,
Oh what fun it is to ride in this old 240D.

On and on we go,
In My old 240D,
What's that in the road,
Up ahead I see?

Piled up behind a truck,
Are all those passing cars,
As I creep by in the left hand lane, I thank my lucky STAR!!

Oh!

Jingle Bells, Diesel smells, driving is a breeze,
Oh what fun it is to ride in this old 240D, HEE!

Jingle bells, Diesel smells, Oh what's that noise I hear,
We've finally made it home now, so let's go have a beer!
