Hi Greg and List,

An interesting specimen! While the Widmanstätten pattern
is still recognizable, the bandwidth seems to have been
squeezed, the lines are bent, the pattern looks much
more diffuse than the unshocked specimen recovered
from the surrounding plain.

By the way, Buchwald mentions 7 different alteration stages:

BUCHWALD V.F. (1975) Handbook of Iron Meteorites, Volume 2, pp. 390-397:

1. Original unshocked material
2. Shock-hardened masses
3. Shock-annealed masses
4. Shock-annealed to recrystallization
5. Shock-annealed to alpha2-transformation
6. Shock-annealed to alpha2-transformation and
   recrystallization of cohenite and schreibersite
7. Partly remelted specimens

Another interesting feature of your rim specimen is the small thin
schreibersite skeleton crystals some of which which are oriented at
a 90° angle in the middle of the picture.

Hi Bernd,

You might be interested in examining CD16 on my website.
http://home.earthlink.net/~capricorn89/rim.htm
Be sure to click for a full screen image. It is what I call a near rim. It
was found due west, at the bottom of the outer talus from the rim, about
12-15 inches deep, so probably tumbled some distance. Found in a region
which was unusually moist. The crust was like a rustball, but very shallow,
and when cleaned, the interior WILL NOT RUST. This is an ultra-thin slice.
It also was almost impossibly hard to cut. On close examination you will
note slippage plains, and what appears to be several lamella crossing an
intrusive vein, they are, in fact, not related. This is the most unusual CD
I have cut, although I have seen this sort of things among research
specimens, but never any commercially available.

By the way, I had permission to hunt. This was back when I was a student in
Meteoritics under Dr. Leonard at UCLA.

Hi Ron and List,

Thank you for drawing our attention to these rim/near rim beauties!

It is what I call a near rim. It was found due west, at the bottom
of the outer talus from the rim, about 12-15 inches deep ... This is
an ultra-thin slice. It also was almost impossibly hard to cut.

CD 130 and CD 545 seem to belong to those Canyon
Diablo specimens that Buchwald describes as having been
reheated during the cratering impact with kamacite altered
to unequilibrated, polycrystalline aggregates. Buchwald also
says that such specimens tend to lose their oriented sheen.

As for CD 16:

It also was almost impossibly hard to cut.

Maybe this was due to minute diamonds because it was found
so close to ground zero and was therefore probably exposed
to extreme temperatures and p r e s s u r e s !

RE: [meteorite-list] Henbury: deformed etch pattern

2002-03-17 Thread Greg Redfern

Hello Bernd, Eric, and List,

While the attached is not a Henbury deformation, it IS an unusual etch
pattern present in a Canyon Diablo Rim (defined as being found in the rim of
Meteor Crater) specimen. Contrast the nearly featureless RIM etch pattern
with that of an etched plains Canyon Diablo specimen. The Rim specimen was
subjected to great heat from the impact event which essentially erased the
Widmanstatten lines.

Hello Eric and List,

Thank you for sharing these beautifully deformed Henburys
with us! Here is what O.R. Norton says about them:

Most of the meteorites are fragments torn from the main mass on impact.
Many are thin, with bent and ragged edges attesting to the great forces
to which they were subjected. Polished and etched specimens show
Widmanstätten patterns deformed into curved plates by mechanical
stresses. Some meteorites show evidence of heating to over 800° F,
which destroyed their Widmanstätten patterns, especially around the
edges. These were probably ejected from the two largest craters when
their explosive formation caused the greatest heating.

Fire on the mountain, missiles in the air
Alamosa Valley Courier
March 16, 2002

DEL NORTE - Rio Grande County Sheriff's officers and Search and Rescue
volunteers searched the area around Frisco Creek, Rock Creek and Dog
Mountain, Friday night, attempting to locate what several citizens called
in to report as a large fireball seen falling to ground in that
vicinity. Late in the evening, NORAD (North American Air Defense Command)
confirmed there had been a missile launch out of Vandenburg Air Force Base
in New Mexico.

The reports started coming in about 7:47 p.m., according to RGSO Cpl.
Steve Trujillo. He said the first report was of lights in the sky,
followed by an explosion with smoke, southwest of Del Norte. A check with
the Federal Aviation Administration by Trujillo reported no large planes
missing, with the only possible small plane down being in the Colorado
Springs area.

Trujillo alerted Sheriff Desi Medina to the continuing reports, and Medina
had him alert Search Rescue at 8:10 p.m. By 10 p.m., RGSO was scouring the
area from Rock Creek and Frisco Creek, Pinos Creek to Beaver Creek, with
Search Rescue sweeping Lime Kiln Road with beeper detectors, designed to
locate emergency aircraft beacons. Trujillo said about 15 calls had been
received about the phenomena by RGSO, and another dozen or more by the
Colorado State Patrol dispatch in Alamosa.

It was about 10:15 p.m. when Trujillo received confirmation from NORAD
of the missile launch, and all units were told to stand down from the search.

[meteorite-list] New Moroccan fall

2002-03-17 Thread Jim Strope

Really no problem. Pal. It is kind of like
when Circuit City had a sale last week on television sets. If you did not
buy during the sale then it is too late. Not a complicated concept to
understand, really.

[meteorite-list] Re: New Moroccan Fall

2002-03-17 Thread Bob Martino

OK, Mike. I'll bite.

I'll take a nice individual in the 500g range at the .40 per gram retail
price you quoted. I'll throw in a reasonable amount for shipping as well,
say $10 (A bit high, to be on the safe side).

When can I expect my specimen?

I have heard that the new fall is going for .40 per gram. Several
Moroccan dealers are retailing it for that.

[meteorite-list] Oh when the Saints, go marching in...

2002-03-17 Thread David Weir

Hello fellow collectors,

Today I realized one of my impossible goals in trying to complete a
systematic collection. After skeptically encouraging Steve Arnold to
pursue a portion of one of only two EH5 meteorites even remotely
possible to acquire for a private collector, to my astonishment he
actually came through with some - through a trade with the Museum
National d'Histoire, Paris, France. I have now added an awesome specimen
of Saint-Sauveur. I strongly suspect that Steve will continue to
successfully pursue the rarest of meteorites for our collections and I
encourage all who may be interested to join his private mailing list so
as to get early notification of future rare offers.

Way to go Steve! Thanks!
