Hello Greg, All,

First-off, congrats to Joe - hell of a find.

But I really don't understand what you bring up, Greg. If it's your
dream to find one, and you finally do, you don't cut it up and sell it
three days later.

The story reminds me of quite a few, to be honest: dealer chases down
new fall/find, finds it, cuts it up, sells it.

So, I agree - spectacular find, but...well, it *was* a pretty stone.
Now it's a pile of slices waiting to be shipped. It was his dream to
go and find a stone, and then to cut it up and sell it all to make a
few thousand dollars?
If I owned a slice (and I'm not planning on buying one), I wouldn't
look down at it thinking this is a piece of the realization of one's
man dream, because all it got him in the end was $60/g.

I don't know about you, but I consider my dreams to be worth more than
that, and it would cost a hell of a lot more for you to get me to sell
them.

You're treating it like it's a business. Calling it something else
seems strange -- and calling it priceless...all this sentimental talk
from someone who just sliced up a beautiful stone strikes me as a
little funny.

I'll take it quietly while a dealer dices with no pretext [to make
money], but thisthis annoys me significantly more.

Is it really the dream of most people out there to simply find a new
fall for the cash in it? Are meteorite enthusiasts on the whole
really coming to that?

I feel as though this message might give the wrong impression - I
can't begin to convey how happy I am for Joe and his truly spectacular
find, but what I'm seeing is the exact opposite of what I would expect
from someone who just found the meteorite of his or her dreams...and
it's beyond disappointing to me if this is really what meteorite
hunters hope to do with their 'dream finds...'

[meteorite-list] Two Unexplored Craters

2010-03-30 Thread John Gwilliam

Morning All,
A couple of weeks ago, A fellow from Grand Junction, Colorado called
me. He's looking for someone to search for meteorites in two craters
in New Mexico that have never been hunted before. The catch is that
whoever he chooses for the privilege, must take his 86 year old
mother along on the adventure. Not to worry, he claims she gets
around better that most 50 year olds. It seems the mother grew up on
a ranch near the two craters and knew(knows) the people who have
owned the land forever. Even though she hasn't had any contact with
the owners in a long, long time, she and her son are pretty sure they
will remember his grandfather who lived there many decades ago. The
craters are large. One even has a house built in the bottom of it.

When I asked him if he and his mom would be interested in having a
team of professional meteorite hunter take on the task, he was very
clear they would assuredly be off the property with a gun if they
weren't accompanied by his mother. He's sure the land owners will
remember his mom once they get a chance to talk about family history
back about half a century. Well, he's pretty sure.

So, if any of you intrepid hunters want to roll the dice and get a
chance at discovering some yet-to-be-discovered meteorites, let me
know. I'll give you the fellow's name and phone number.

Before I hung up the phone, I asked the man a simple question. What
prompted your mother to get interested in meteorites after all these
years? Did she happen to see a TV program about Meteorite Men or
something similar?

Yeh he said, I do believe she watched a program about
meteorites. Isn't it amazing how creative the human brain can be?

Have a good week,

John Gwilliam

I've kept quiet on this subject up to now, but since several members
won't let it die a decent death, here's my perspective.

Kudos to Robert Ward!!!

Take a different look at these pieces of metal, wood and plastic.

I am sensitive to the overall gun issue but believe they are simply
another tool that can be used for good and bad purposes. Guns in the
right hands can do marvelous things. In the hands of Allied forces
in the 1940's, these tools liberated Europe from a fate that I
shudder to think what might have been. Over 300,000 American boys
picked up these tools and made the sacrifice to free many nations,
who couldn't do it themselves, from the horror of dictatorship and genocide.

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Photography (Must read!)

2010-01-27 Thread John Gwilliam
Al is right on this one. The higher the F-stop number, the greater
the depth of field is, i.e more of a three dimensional object will be
in focus. The drawback to this is less light enters the lens thus
requiring a longer shutter speed. And, if your not careful, a
background that is too close can be in focus as well. There are many
different ways to take good quality pictures of
meteorites, experimentation is the key.

John Gwilliam

Hi Erik and all,

I'd think just the opposite would be correct. A higher f-stop (f 22,

iris is on your camera (lower f stop, 1.8, 2.0 etc.) the less
focused your items would be. I think you just stated it backwards. Best!

The third thing is auto-blending. For those of you who have SLR's
you will notice that shooting at a higher F-stop like F1.8 or F2.8
is a lot sharper than shooting at a lower F-stop like F22. The
problem is, you might have to drop your F-stop to make sure the

[meteorite-list] AD-Two Metal Detectors, Microscope and more.

2009-10-05 Thread John Gwilliam

Good morning List members,

I have a few items I'm selling off at great prices.

First, I have two White's Goldmaster V/sat metal detectors. Both are
used but in fine working condition. One has the standard small
elliptical coil - $150.

The second V/sat has the much larger (searches deeper) Gold Max coil
plus the original small coil - $200.

MBC-10 microscope with all the goodies that come with it plus a Tobin
polarizer, two camera mounts and a neat little arm that you can mount
a small LED light (like a Mini Maglite) to the mast. $270.

A signed copy of The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Meteorites that
contains lots of autographs of many of the meteorite crowd that
showed up at the Tucson Show 2005 - $190 or best offer or the next
couple of days. See pictures here of this book here:
http://www.johngwilliam.com/autographedbook.htm

And last, a copy of Catalog of Meteorites Fifth Edition with CD and
in excellent + condition. $75.00

Paypal preferred. USA sales/shipping only.

buyer(s) to pay reasonable packing and shipping costs.

Regards and Thanks,

John Gwilliam

Good Morning Listees,

Re: [meteorite-list] Beware of Steve Arnold Chicago Ebay scams part 3+

2009-08-21 Thread John Gwilliam

Dirk and List,

Friday morning editorial.

It will be interesting to see how Steve Arnold Chicago responds to
this allegation, that is, if he responds at all. My guess is that
he'll go into hiding for a time and then reappear as if nothing has
happened. But, in all fairness, I'm willing to wait a day or two and
see how it all shakes out.

I've known Dirk for a lot of years and spent many hours on the phone
with him when two of our fellow List members were on an extended
vacation to Oman. He's a stand-up guy and I don't recall ever
hearing anything negative about him. Chicago Steve, on the other
hand, well... I think I'll simply let his reputation speak for itself.

If I had to put my hard earned cash on the table and gamble on the
outcome of this situation, I think that all of you already know who I
would bet on. Exposing fraud on the internet and within our
communities is, or should be, the duty of all honest people. If your
support of someone is colored by free beer, personal favors or, in
this case, freebie meteorites, then maybe it's time to take a look in
the mirror.

I'm trying not to be bias. I'm merely relying on past experience to
help me make a judgement call for myself. If some of you think this
makes me a naysayer then so be it.

Best Regards, and have a great weekend,

Re: [meteorite-list] Beware of Steve Arnold Chicago Ebay scams part 3+

2009-08-21 Thread John Gwilliam
The sellers motive for closing an auction early and canceling all
bids should indeed be taken into account. If the item is broken,
stolen or you find out it does not function properly after you listed
it, then you have a legitimate reason to close an auction early and
cancel bids.

This situation is different. The sole motive ( I talked with Dirk on
the phone this morning and have seen, in writing, Steve's reply to
him) in this case is simply about being offered more money (actually
more value in a trade) which is unethical. If we throw ethics out the
window and determine or behavior based singularly on what is legal,
then we can become like the big business plunderers, who claim
everything they did was within the law.

Cheers,

John

larger seller who lists hundreds or thousands of items per month).
Maybe it was a grilled cheese sandwich with Jesus on it and your dog ate it!

Re: [meteorite-list] Elliott Collection Sale Results

2009-08-19 Thread John Gwilliam
This is very typical of auctions for just about anything, it is not
unique to meteorites. I've been to antique auctions where high
priced items got passed over while low end things got fought over.
Same is true for horses and cattle (which I have personal knowledge of).

Next time you bid at an auction, especially a live one, pay attention
to what goes on inside your head. Most people have a limit of how
much they will bid per increment and also what price they will drop
out. However, it's easy to get sucked into bidding $10 or $20 or $50
more than you your original plan. It's easy to twenty dollar
yourself to death at auctions. In my opinion, it's easier to justify
bidding on twenty $50 items rather than one $1,000 item even though
they have the same total value. Auction bidding can get addictive.

Best,

John Gwilliam

Subject: [meteorite-list] AD: New Game For List Members Only!
WIN AS MANY AUCTIONS AS YOU CAN and You Will Win...

 Hello,

On Thursday August 20th (This Week) I have 49 Auctions ending. These
were all started out at 0.99 cents. I am offering a $300.00 shopping
spree in my ebay store to which ever list member wins the most
auctions. A pretty simple game with big rewards. Just bid and win as
many of those 49 auctions and be the winner of the most auctions and
you then can go shopping in my ebay store and use the $300.00 on
 whatever you like.

 SEE ALL AUCTIONS HERE:

http://shop.ebay.com:80/merchant/meteorite-collector_W0QQLHQ5fAuctionZ1QQ

The last game was a big, big success and I gave out 2($250.00)
shopping sprees and one other shopping spree for $150.00 (If I
 remember correctly).

This time the game is FOR LIST MEMBERS ONLY. My last one was open to
all ebayers, but that was just a little overwhelming with email
questions. However, the game brought many new people into meteorites.
I have about 20,000 people who visit my ebay store each month and when
I ran the game the last time my visits exceeded 20,000 just for 5 days!

Anyway, the rules are simple. Try and win as many auctions as
possible. There are some really nice meteorites out there this week.
After the auctions are over, I will notify the winner and I request
that you paypal me the $$$ for the won auctions within 1 hour. I will
then give you the thumbs up to go shopping. YOU MUST PAY for your wins
before you can go shopping and I need the shopping to take place
within 24 hours of paying me through paypal. Win as many auctions as
you can. Pay me pronto. Get thumbs up and then go shopping! Simple
 and FUN.

Any questions, feel free to ask.

 Thanks and Best Wishes

 Michael Cottingham

In case you don't know (and apparently you don't),
Bob Walker has done a great deal for the meteorite community
And for the Australian Meteorite community as well.
He has conducted much research and part of that research

I then emailed Steve, Bob considering the possibility that his

And asked that Steve let me know as well, just in case HIS emails
Were getting lost getting to Australia.
 Again, no response.
I suppose that might be why he mentioned Steve's rudeness or
However he put it (which was, by the way, very MILDLY STATED).
I can only assume you have very limited experiences dealing with

It doesn't sound like it - instead, it sounds like you thought I

 A comment.. Strange. Strange, indeed.
Now, fact is, I personally like Steve. I take him as he is. However
I am not blind to his behavior - either in relationship to me or to

I've updated the news on qmig.org to give
an idea where I'm heading for the

next week or so - I have some lovely pix of the Miles and Arrabury main
 masses
to upload - also some of the lab data from
Miles - maybe even some ancient

newspaper articles on the Rockhampton meteorite

Once I get that out of the way I can back to my plan of some serious
horsetrading with museums and then the QMIG collection will be getting
something very very special as well as more main mass pix to upload and
 methinx a lot more articles

Still a lot of projects in motion, on the backburner or on autopilot but
everything plods away in its own time

Tell the list that Steve ARNOLD (Chicago)

I have to agree here. I live just 1.5 miles from a small airport
that is also a residential neighborhood. The homes have hangers for
their planes. In residence are three P-51s, some P-40s and three
Stearman biplanes.

If this List can tolerate an occasional break from convention to deal
with personality conflicts, NASA, Mars rovers, baby notices, and I
finally got a new job notices, etc., we should be able to tolerate
some pictures of aircraft.

Re: [meteorite-list] Update: Stolen meteorite shipment

2009-08-05 Thread John Gwilliam
I'm glad to see you had an acceptable resolution to your problem.
Many people are not as fortunate as you and end up taking the entire
loss themselves. Maria Haas is one of those people who work behind
the scene at solving issues very effectively. The next time someone
complains about the IMCA, remind them of this incident.

Aloha,

Since my original post on this subject June 1, a lot has transpired
and I thought it in the best interest of the parties involved, as well
as the members of this list to know (as the late Paul Harvey would
say) The rest of the story.

The meteorites I had purchased were won on ebay in a bulk auction that
took about 3 hours to run. I paid for the items, and they were
shipped out of South America soon after. When the package arrived, I
eagerly went to the post office to claim my treasure. After the
discovery of the theft of my meteorites in shipment (I received an
empty box from the post office), I staggered home in disbelief. I
emailed the seller notifying him of the disaster, but did not hear
from him in a couple of days. At this point I was not a happy camper
and filed a grievance with IMCA, a claim with eBay and Paypal, and
wrote my email to the list.

The seller responded to my emails, was empathetic and offered to
assist on his end by filing a claim at his post office, and suggested
I do the same at my post office. I returned the next day to file a
claim at the USPS. Meanwhile Maria Haas, representing IMCA, responded
almost immediately by contacting both the seller and me separately
first to gather information from each other's respective viewpoint.
She extracted the facts and shared with me the IMCA code of ethics and
the issues of insurance, customs, taxes and other things that which I
was not aware (but were reiterated by list members in response to my
email). She then took steps to mediate the situation in as tactful a
manner possible.

At some point, the seller offered to share the loss with me, and
agreed to refund me half of my payment if I would drop my claim with
Paypal (which was withholding my payment to him until resolution). I
dropped the claim, the seller reimbursed half my loss and the rest, as
they say, is history...but wait, there's more.

Since then, I have become a member of the IMCA. Not to become a big
dealer, but to establish and uphold a modicum of the integrity and
honor that was demonstrated to me by the characters in this story,
themselves upstanding members of the IMCA. I have learned a lot from
them and other IMCA members and dealers, and am dedicated to extending
and perpetuating those values to the current and next generation of
meteorite enthusiast.

BTW, the seller (as many of you can guess) is Eduardo Jawerbaum, and I
am a happy winner and recipient of some of the meteorites he had on
auction a couple of weeks ago! Yes, I bought some more meteorites
from the same person in the same country and postal system from which
my previous shipment was stolen. Slow learner? Repeat offender?
Obsessed collector? Maybe a little of all, but I must tell you that I
am happy to continue to be a customer of Eduardo, and the proud owner
of the freshest Franconia you've ever seen. Mahalo Eduardo ... Peace
and poi.

Re: [meteorite-list] Koenigsbrueck, Saxonia is a hot desert find

2009-07-28 Thread John Gwilliam
Several years ago, when the NWAs started showing
up in large amounts, there were several people on
this list (including myself) who were concerned
about false finds being submitted as new
meteorites. It doesn't take dishonest people too
long to figure out that a common meteorite
purchased at a show can be planted in some new
location where a new find would bring a lot of money.

I don't know how this can be prevented or
avoided, but it's pretty obvious that dealing
with people you know very well is a step in the right direction.

Just four days after Jack Schrader announced his
first finds of the latest Arizona fall, I got a
phone call from a guy in Southern Arizona who
claimed he had a new Arizona meteorite he had
found three and a half years ago and he was going
to sell it at auction. He wasn't clear about what
kind of auction he intended to use, but I got the
idea he was going to offer it to whoever offered
him the highest bid over the phone.

I get so many calls like this I was going to tell
the man I wasn't interested but decided to ask
him a few questions. His answers were typical and
somewhat amusing. The find location was somewhere
in Southern Arizona, but he wouldn't narrow it
down any more than that. He claimed the first
test he had done was a fire assay. H, seems
like a weird test for a meteorite. Next, when
asked what the classification was, he said it was
an anomalous achondrite with 28% nickel. He had
sliced the nearly 2 kilo stone and had a ~750
gram slice that was full of metal veins. To get
the metal to show up better he had etched the
slice with pure nitric acid. as I asked more
questions, his answers got more evasive.

Sure hope I didn't miss out on a good deal, but
my common sense told me to take a pass.

There's nothing to prevent someone from offering
an inexpensive NWA meteorite as a new find. As
long as they stick to their story it's near
impossible to prove them wrong. It has happened
to me a few times so I'm guessing it has happened
to other List members as well. Is there a
solution to this? I guess only time will tell.

Best from sunny Arizona where we're expecting 115F today,

John Gwilliam

Hello list,

typical weathering feautures of hot desert meteorites were found.
So it was a fake.

Hopefully Königsbrück will be soon removed from the Meteorite Bulletin
Database?

Unfortunately I still find there another skeleton in the cupboard of German
meteorites listed as an official meteorite.

Inningen, Bavaria, 1998.

The Ni-content and the trace element data are consistent with Sikhote-Alin
and the piece is a typical shrapnel.
(That's why no structural type had could been determined).

From impact dynamics we all know, that shrapnels are produced only by
impacts of major iron masses.

Inningen was a single 1.2kg specimen, found on a road.

It's highest time after 10 years now, I'd say, to remove Inningen from the
Catalogue or at least to mark it as doubtful.

(That becomes more and more a fashion to fake finds. A while ago someone in
Germany claimed to have found a Gibeon in a quarry - and 2 weeks ago a
German tried me to sell a meteorite he had found here by his own - an
indochinite!)

Best!

So Jason which of your listed situations applies to what you've just done?

You're the one who supported Tom's post. How's it feel to have the
same done to you? Given your response, I don't think you liked it.
It proves my point. If I'm wrong for doing it, Tom was wrong for
doing it. Transitivity.

a = b
b = c
ergo
a = c

(!)

Were you drunk or has that testosterone problem flared up again?

Yeah, I may be in college, but not all of us do rubbish like that.
Maybe the fact that it's Berkeley has something to do with it. There
are at least a few smart-ish people up here.
That said, given your response, I think it's a bit odd for you to be
bandying about testosterone as a cause for anything; unless your balls
have dropped off, it's as much a cause for your writing as it is for
mine.
Unless you're going senile, of course.

You are so predictable-- You attacked Tom, for posting private
emails to the list and within 6 hours you've done the same thing.

Yes, because I've done this in the pastnot. It proved my point,
at any rate. If I'm wrong for doing it, then Tom was wrong for doing
it. Tom is still wrong. And if you learn that, and Tom learns that,
then this won't ever happen again.

You've really let me down--I expected it within no more than 4
hours! Just as predictable, you didn't have the guts to mail me a
copy directly.

Emailing directly means nothing when you send a copy to the list, FYI.
You posted this message to the list as well as myself - I got only
one copy, as gmail consolidates things like that into one message.
Maybe your email works differently, but the messages should still
arrive at the same time, give or take a few minutes (at most), so it's
a moot point, regardless.

You've proved what I said about you was right on -- you are
incapable of having a man-to-man direct discussion, so you have to
enlist the entire list hoping someone will help take the heat off
your hypocrisy.

Yeah, just look at everyone stepping in to help. Oh, wait. No one
ever steps in. Check the archives.
I did get a number of private emails though. All supportive save two
(those two = 1/4 of the messages received).
Maybe I just want them to see what kind of a person you are.
I wonder why that would work to my advantage, eh?

Put up or shut up.

After your last spew of psychological BS, I think you're really not in
a place to be saying anything along these lines at the moment.

Show me you've got a pair and address me directly and off
list. Stop bothering the list with your co-dependency crap.

Hardly. If you insist on propagating this anti-Steve/'I'm better than
you' rubbish, it's staying here. I'm not letting you get away with
bullying me in private, undoubtedly ignoring the issue in the process.

After all, we're still talking about your conduct with regards to the
Steve issue, which is...kind of a list issue, assuming, at least, that
you're not as stubborn as Steve is, and might change your ways.
After all, the only reason I say take the Steve stuff off-list is
because its being on-list doesn't serve any purpose; he doesn't care.
You say you do care. Maybe you'll shut up.

Your discourse started me reflecting. I've 186 or so semester
hours, postgrad Clinical psych, plus 6 months of internships with
sex offenders in southern prisons, state mental hospitals,
Alzheimer victims and Chronic DUI offenders so if you want to
debate such content, lets form a group at yahoo and have at it but,
this isn't the place for it. (NOTE: I have grounds a plenty to
justify my preference for meteorites over that for humanity). Oh
and you've had what...a self awareness class? Did you pass?

First- off, I guess I'm glad that you're so accomplished in the field
of psychology, but it seems that you've forgotten some of the basics.
Back to the textbook, eh? I'm assuming it's been a while since you
learned the stuff.

I've only taken Psych 1 at Berkeley and some research work on five or
so studies. Just the standard pre-major (not the other one) general
psychology class. Of course, if any of my points were incorrect, you
may by all means quote me to point out which of my statements
regarding the psychological aspect of our discussion was in fact
wrong.

By all means.

I mean, just saying you're wrong without saying how or why doesn't
get anyone anywhere, especially when I refuted every one of your
points - it sounds like you're copping out.

But looking at your actions from a psychological perspective, I mean,
honestly - you were just trying to use the vocabulary of a subject
about which you assumed I knew nothing in order

Another interesting feature that points to fireball is that the light
streaks are not consistent in intensity - like a flickering object. This
could be due to over-enhancement, but I don't think so. Every other
telescope/long exposure image I can find on the web (of aircraft) shows them
like solid bars of light or strobes. Also, it may be my screen, but I cannot
see red or blue lights in Hankey's image.

A good example of a large plane:

Hey Dean, List,

OK all... Before we get all excited over this. The photo IS in fact 100%
a fireball, without a doubt it is a fireball fragmentation. It came from
Mike Hankey and he has graciously let me post it on my meteorite blog.

There is an explanation of the photo below with links to enhanced
images. It is not a plane, though I thought it was when I first looked
at it, after careful examination and looking at the hi-res images it is
a fireball/bolide event captured in the photo. There are too many
streaks large and small for this to be a plane unless that plane is lit
up like a Christmas tree.

In addition you will notice that toward the bottom of the image the
streak get further apart, just as pieces of the fireball would have done
during fragmentation...

Look at this hi-res image:
http://meteoriteblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/meteorjuly62009-watermar
ked-blog.jpg

And this one here which I enhanced to show the streaks a bit clearer:

And this one:

I think the explanation for that is probably that usually you photograph

small slow moving aircraft like a cessna while this is a much larger
aircraft (Due to all of the light streaks - a small cessna wouldent have as
many lights) and was probably moving faster and further away (Although not
30,000 feet as there were landing lights on).

Anybody also notice that in the photo the Meteor is going up toward

Chris,

If I write a scientific paper, I will call it Ash Creek. For commercial
purposes, if it isn't illegal, I will keep calling it West.

After all, that is the purpose of having synonyms is so that you can call
things by other names, right?

There will be no confusion to me. I don't think anyone else in the
community will be confused. Anyone that says Ash Creek we will
know what they

are saying. Anyone that uses the West name, we will know what they are
saying as well. Just like if they say it is from the
United States or they

say it is from America.

I agree with Mark that some meteorites that have already been sold with
the name West might get lost in the TKW tallies. Some collections
(public and private) will have West on their labels instead of
Ash Creek.

But 75 years from now, it will be just as easy to sort out as Toluca on a
Glen Huss label is from Xiquipilco on a Nininger label... they are the
same rock.

The only confusion will probably be in the collector market, and I don't
think the NomCom cares all that much about the collector market, or that the
name West has been used in all the media references up until now. Just
Google Search West Meteorite then search Ash Creek Meteorite. If they
did care, the official name would have been assigned within a few days and
this minor confusion would have easily been avoided. Their priority is for
the scientific side of things, not the pop culture side of things.

collection of meteorites. Every single story I've heard from people
witnessing falls have been bogus. At least 10 people in the last
year and a half have brought in meteorwrongs that they swear up and
down hit their house. One was so hot that it melted the vinyl
siding! (It was railroad rock.) One hit the house, went through
the roof, bounced around inside awhile, then smashed through the
wall and landed outside in the yard. (It was silicon.) Others have
hit houses narrowly missing the occupants. (Slag, klinkers and more
silicon). 3 or 4 people have been outside and had to duck to avoid
getting hit. (Hematite and yet more slag.) Several people have come
in with stories of seeing very large meteorites hit the ground,
explode, form big craters, etc. Every one of these I've checked out
has been a meteorwrong. Often people will bring in non native
minerals and swear they found them here in Indiana, or saw them fall
from the sky. I just had a chunk of antimony brought in that was
supposedly found 30 feet underground! My favorite was an older lady
that just finished watching a television show about how meteorites
are worth millions of dollars, when suddenly she was startled by the
sound of something hitting the side of her house. You guessed
it, it was meteorites! 5 of them. (One was railroad rock, 3
pieces of slag, a chunk of asphalt, and a piece of melted plastic.)
Under questioning, not one relented, they all stuck to their
stories. They seemed to really believe their stories. It's an
interesting psychological phenomenon that meteorites (like sex) seem
to induce people to tell outrageous stories.

The issue of trespassing on Arizona State lands should be addressed
here as well. Whether you're hunting meteorites, hiking, bird
watching or participating in any other activity on Arizona State
lands, you must have a special permit. I must be clear about the
meteorite hunting issue. Having one of the special Arizona State
Lands permits doesn't give you the right to hunt for meteorites (or
anything else for that matter) while on Arizona land.

My wife and I were bird watching at Queen Valley ( close to the
Florence Highway turn-off east of Apache Junction) when a State
officer approached us and asked to see our permit. Not having one, we
thought we'd get a polite reminder about proper procedures, but
instead got threatened with a citation or arrest if we remained where
we were of showed up again without the proper permit. This guy was
all business, nothing pleasant or polite in the least way. We now
carry one of the special access permits in our vehicle. Be careful out there!

If you use any of the epoxy adhesives that have iron powder as one of
the ingredients, the glue will migrate to the poles of the magnet.
I witnessed this myself when gluing some neodymium magnets to some
wood dowels. Back about 10 years ago, Dave Andrews and I made a
variety of magnetic canes for hunting meteorites. We used golf
club shafts that can be bought at a thrift store for cheap. The
longer woods shafts were the perfect length. If you want something
shorter, you can shorten the driver shafts or simply use a shaft from
an 8 or 9 iron.

Re: [meteorite-list] Moroccan Infighting

2009-01-16 Thread John Gwilliam
Good comments Greg. This isn't too much different than what happened
with some of the Russians several years ago. Trying to sell direct
retail and still sell wholesale to dealers just doesn't work.
Eventually, the market gets flooded and prices end up in the crapper.
When the supply dries up in Morocco, all sorts of creative
marketing will pop up. Someone has already mentioned the
possibility of old unsold material being offered as new falls. You
don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out how this is all
going to play out.

Best,
John

At 06:37 PM 1/16/2009, Greg Hupe wrote:

Dear List members,

We all know that most of the Moroccan meteorite traders were
ambitious in obtaining new material from the nomads of the Sahara
and building close partnerships with meteorite dealers from the rest
of the world. In the past few years they have been destroying the
typically respected wholesale/retail relationship with their
partners and have been striving the go direct to the collectors to
squeeze every last nickel they could get, despite the repercussions.
Moroccans can not (and will not) provide the guarantee, meteorite
preparation and proper classification as most long-term meteorite dealers do.

The funny part in all of this is that while going for broke and
looking past their long-term partnerships, they have managed to
scare away collectors because there is no trust and confidence in
what the Moroccans say or do. In part, the skepticism is accurate
and some is not. One thing is true, they have lost many long-term
customers, the true bounty they will one day realize and regret!

Now to the funny, but sad part... In their attempts to be a one-stop
shop, we have witnessed today the Moroccans fighting with each other
in public, on this List! This tells me, which I predicted a year ago
amongst friends, that in the bad economy (and even in a good one)
the Moroccans would start to back stab each other even worse than
ever to get that last nickel. I would say it has backfired! It is
looking like they are losing their best long-term customers and
scaring away collectors.

As times continue to be economically rough, I predict we will see
more of these Moroccan street fights erupt on this List and at
shows. Maybe I will bring a lawn chair and a big bag of popcorn to
Tucson and watch the show!

Best regards,
Greg

First off, kudos to Al Mitterling for pointing out the riffy, illegal
business practices of Bob Evans. I'm surprised no one else has
called out

this onion in the daisy patch. Bob Evans has made thousands of dollars
selling misrepresented meteorites to unsuspecting customers, notably
Plymouth and Zulu Queen. I know because I was duped into buying
a sample of

his ersatz Plymouth. At the time, I had just gotten a job as collections
curator of a small Earth and Space museum. I was very excited to see the
Plymouth meteorite offered in an ad on the Meteorite List, as the town is
just down the road from us and my uncle and I had spent considerable time
researching and searching for the supposed lost main mass.
(Turned out to be
a wild goose chase). Since Bob seemed to be a list member in
good standing
I figured he could be trusted. If I had known enough to search
the archives,

I would have seen that he is a con man. To make a long story short, Bob's
Plymouth was as phony as a 3 dollar bill. He told me it was
etched before I

bought it, (it wasn't). He promised he would return my money as he stated
in the auction, (he didn't). I've asked him numerous times for my money
back and got nothing but a run around. This guy is a con artist
and I must

admit he runs a good scam that has been very profitable for him. He's
giving the industry a bad name and should be flamed every time
he comes out

of hiding and has the audacity to come back and post on the list. I would
like to warn all newbies: Do not deal with this guy! If you do, you will
regret it in the long run.

2008-10-26 Thread John Gwilliam
If you check back in the List Archives, you will find that there have
been several people who have problems sending and/or receiving mail
to/from the Met List.
Several weeks ago, I noticed that mail from the List was getting
sporadic. Sometimes, I wouldn't receive mail for two or three days
only to have it all show up several days later. Many emails that I
posted to the List showed up in the Archives but I never received a
copy in my Inbox. Bob Holmes and I found that we both had the same
issues. After comparing notes, we discovered that the latest episode
of no mail received happened to both of us on the same day at the
same hour. Since we've been friends for many years, we knew that we
were both customers of the server giant COX.net. Both of us made
several phone calls to our server but got no results. Bob signed up
with an email account supplied by a friends website and I signed up a
gmail account as suggested by Art. We both now receive Met List
posting regularly and on time. My old COX account will now
sporadically send me mail for the list, but it is all marked spam.

The only conclusion we could come to was that the problem originated
with COX and not with Art's server. I know in the past that many of
you who were with Comcast and Aol has the same frustrating
problems. I my humble opinion, the problem is caused by servers
installing software to automate more processes that presort mail
looking for SPAM or junk mail.

Good luck fixing your problem. My faith in our high tech world is

Thanks for the tip. Bob Holmes and I did just that with no
results. What we found out was that our server (COX) required we
send a copy of an email from EVERY MET LIST MEMBER and tell the
server that it wasn't SPAM. Evidently, every Met List email is
considered separate from the List itself. I just don't have the
patience to spend hours and hour trying to fix a problem that didn't
exist last year or even ten years ago. It was easier for me to
subscribe to the Met List with a Gmail account. It, by the way, has
worked fast and flawless.

Check your Junk Mail, and anything there that shouldn't be can be

That would keep List mail out of there in the future.

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite sales falling with the stock

2008-10-13 Thread John Gwilliam
We can point finger in all directions and blame a whole basket full of
politicians, business leaders and everyone and anyone else. One thing
we need to address ( in my uneducated opinion) is the over spending by
the regular folks on Main street. It used to be people saved up
enough money until they had a 20% down payment for a house and only
used credit for other items like a vehicle (not two or three) and
education. These days, many of us citizens make purchases on credit
that we really can't afford. after all, why do we put thing on our
credit cards? Because we don't have the cash. Optimistically, we
always believe our financial outlook will be brighter in the future
and we'll be able to pay off the credit card quickly. Sadly, it's
that's usually not the case.

Those of you who are my age (56) or older might remember the lay
away plan that many department stores used to have. You went into
the store every week or two and paid five or tens bucks on an item
they were holding for you. When you paid for the item in full, they
handed it to you and you had a brand new thing - a washer, dryer or
bike for one of your kids. Nowdays, we put the thing on a credit
card and by the time most of us get it paid off the thing is worn
out or dead and gone.

It's time for all of us to take a hard look at our spending
habits...along with who we vote into office and how we use our money.

Sure, we're in a big mess. But if everyone learns from this mistake
we can all be doing better down the road weither it's in one year or
five years.

Best,

John Gwilliam

Re: [meteorite-list] Tucson 2004 - video

2004-01-14 Thread John Gwilliam
Hello Moni and List,
We decided several months ago to not produce a video for the 2004 show in
Tucson. While we enjoyed the project last year, we found that our labor
of love involved more time and money than we had anticipated. We spent
most of our time filming, planning, rushing to meet appointments and doing
the always required paperwork. There's an old saying, all work and no
play makes Jack a dull boy. This applied to John and Bob too. We spent
so much time working at last years show that we didn't have time for any
fun or to simply relax. So, this year we've decided to attend as regular

[meteorite-list] Oldest Holbrook witness dies

2004-01-12 Thread John Gwilliam
Pauline Greer McCleve, the oldest person known to have personally witnessed
the fall of the Holbrook, Arizona meteorite has died in Tempe, Arizona at
the age of 108.
In 1912 at the age of seventeen, Pauline was on the front porch of her
family home when she saw the fireball approaching the small railroad town.
During the few days after the fall, her fiance, father and uncle collected
enough meteorites to earn more than a years wages apiece.
Over the years, she was interviewed by a variety of meteorite scientists,
collectors and enthusiasts and always enjoyed telling the story. It was
quite a treat to hear her tell her tale. I personally interviewed her
several times and she always maintained that the object she saw was a comet.

Re: [meteorite-list] Re: Toxic Minerals

2004-01-06 Thread John Gwilliam
Fred, Dave and List,
Many people think that if they are wet polishing rocks, minerals and
meteorites, they are not susceptible to the dangerous chemicals that may be
found in specimen material.

Not so.

A water cooled lapidary unit for sanding and polishing puts a tremendous
amount of the material you are working on into the air in your working
environment. The finely atomized water carries the residual dust into the
air and can disperse it farther that dry dust can travel. I know several
people who cut and polish rocks and gemstones professionally and they all
use high grade respirators when processing material. As mentioned
previously, chemical can be readily absorbed through the skin with
disastrous results. This includes ethanol, the alcohol used by many
meteorite cutters to remove water from specimens. Use GOOD disposable
gloves plus adequate eye and respiratory protection when you work. By the
time you find out you have a problem, the damage is already done.

Best,

John Gwilliam

active toxins in it.

Fellow Meteorite Collectors,
Before ingesting, or DRY polishing meteorites, fossils or minerals,
keep this in mind: Mineral samples can be as dangerous as any
chemical found in the chemistry laboratory. It only takes 0.3 grams of
the mineral orpiment (Arsenic sulfide, can be found in Nevada, USA) to
kill a 150 pound person. Around the same amount of arsenopyrite will be
fatal. Realgar (another Arsenic sulfide) is similarly dangerous.
Greenocite (cadmium sulfide) is very toxic if ingested, and inhalations
can be as dangerous as ingestion.
Poison fumes can be released by HEATING and by blowpipe lab
testing. Minerals of antimony, nickel, barium, cadmium, lead, mercury,
selenium and zinc are to be treated with care.
Licking or tasting minerals in the field is as risky as tasting
mushrooms in the field to see if they are poisonous. These include
antimony, arsenic, barium, boron, cadmium, cobalt, iron, lead, mercury,
nickel, selenium and zinc. Harmful effects are most likely if the
mineral is soluble in water or stomach acid. Acute symptoms include
dryness and burning of the nasal cavities, gastroenteritis, delirium
(note Dave Freeman!) coma and death.
The borax minerals, colemanite, kernite and sodium borate (borax)
are assumed by many to be safe since they are used in laundry products.
These cause several deaths a year (In the USA or worldwide? Article did
not state.) as the borax is absorbed through cuts or through the skin.
Three grams in the body of a child is sufficient to kill. (So don't try
using a borax laundry soap for the kids bubble bath, unless you're tired
of the little boogers!)
Iron, especially ferrous sulfate (melamterite) can result in death
from as little as 0.4 grams. (By the way guys, don't take your wife's
Made for Women Vitamins and Minerals as men don't require near as much
iron as women, and the extra iron in the daily vitamin has been known to
cause health problems for men.)
This is not a complete list, watch out when working with unknown
minerals.

Interestingly, there is some science behind the

have been carried to the early Earth by a meteorite,
since life on Earth seems to have developed within 400

there are also models for a rapid RNA world that might

Certainly the prion that causes mad cow was not

Re: [meteorite-list] Dry Lake Grand Tour

2003-12-13 Thread John Gwilliam

If my memory is correct, those piles of stones on Roach Dry Lake were
created by Paul Gessler while playing his Golf Gun game and hunting
for meteorites. Ivanpah, the dry lake just to the south of Roach,
is the one most often used for a race track.

be dull in appearance; I handed example end cuts of reflecting (wind

first to stop often and look at them, even place them on the ground to
gauge contrast. Eventually they handed them back saying they no longer
needed them (I never got that comfortable, I still keep mine handy). We
found we were getting some false returns (just until getting real close)
from lava with elongated, yet thin vescicles as they reflect light
differently; almost a shine.

It was rather interesting searching Roach as the locals apparently use it
as a speed track. To that end, it seems they sweep the track for rocks
like the Navy used to sweep for FOD (Foreign Objects of Destruction) on
the flight decks. So we adapted to searching for thier sweep piles to
examine them for possibles . . . no luck of course but it was fun trying

I checked into the same filters Tracy is talking about here. They
are very sensitive and the manufacturers generally don't tell you that
they need cleaning more than they claim. For example, If you burn a
candle in the same room as one of these filters, you must clean the
charged plates every time you use the candle, not once-a-day, but every
time you use a candle.

Dear List,

I have a question for anyone who knows their chemistry better than I
do. My wife and I are thinking of purchasing an air purifier for
removing dust, allergens etc. from our home. Some of these
purifiers emit negative ions into the air (e.g. the Holmes Harmony
Ionizing air Purifier, available at your local Walmart). Does this affect
the risk/rate of corrosion for any meteorites in the same room? We keep
our meteorites in plexiglass containers with dessicant and VCI paper to
help protect against things such as moisture and dustballs full of Cl-
ions. However, the ambient air does get into them.

Sincerely,

Who is going to attend the up coming Tucson Show? I'm looking forward to

I'll be there for all three weekends and probably off and on during the
week as well.

If you walk up to me in Tucson and say, I'm not Proudtom and I want a

Re: [meteorite-list] Fusion crust vs desert varnish?

2003-12-10 Thread John Gwilliam
JD,
Many of the meteorites found in desert environments have been subjected to
sand blasting for many years. This can alter the fusion crust to
different degrees depending on time and conditions. I've seen many
meteorites from the NWA region that have had most if not all of the fusion
crust removed by the erosive effects of wind and sand. Others have just
been polished by this effect and still have some fusion crust remaining
even though the surface may be shiny as you mentioned.

Desert varnish can also make it hard to make an accurate determination
about the amount of remaining fusion crust. The only way I know of is to
cut a window that is at or near a right angle to an uncut surface of the
meteorite. A close look under magnification will show whether or not there
is any fusion crust there.

Best,

John Gwilliam

Just had a bizarre thought that I have no answer to.
Has anyone ever tried bringing out the widmanstatten
pattern with a chemical free etch? I was remembering
a fellow who liked to frost the busts of coins using
a scaled down sandblasting outfit. He would mask the
unetched areas with rubber cement. However if the
taenite and kamacite have different hardnesses, the
etch would be differential, so the pattern would
emerge, and would happen without much fuss? Who knows
what it would look like, but the visual desirability
of an chemical etch might just be borne of no other
alternatives. At the least there would be no great
need for neutralizing the chems away. Just a random
thought. Nice day to you all.

Has anyone had experience using a video camera attached to a microscope? I
want to shoot some video footage of thin sections with an MBC 10 and one of

Re: [meteorite-list] Korra Korrabes

2003-11-12 Thread John Gwilliam
There are a couple of things you might not know about Korra
Korrabes. First, there are two different grades of it that were
collected. The very weathered specimens are missing much of the iron due
to weathering. Fresher and better preserved specimens have less weathering
and fracturing and more intact metal.

Second, KK is one of those meteorites that loses much of it's detail when
highly polished and viewed with the naked eye. These specimens are best
viewed under well-light magnification. To make the details of the specimen
more visible to the naked eye, hand sand the specimen with silicon carbide
paper in 220 grit or coarser range.

Selma is another meteorite that exhibits this same characteristic. When
highly polished, it looks nearly black and featureless. But, when prepared
properly it shows a lot of chondrules.

John

Well, we looked at it, compared it to other H3s, also to the Ghubara, and we
found it difficult to see how this is an H3.
We are obviously missing a critical issue here, because the chondrules were
scant, and indistinct, in fact my Ghub, at an L6 had more structure visible.
It was a very dark matrix too, whereas a lot of H3s have a light matrix (ie
Parnallee)
How and why is KK an H3 - the native iron was sparse, and the chondrules
largely invisible.
So, how come it's an H3?

Re: [meteorite-list] Glorieta Mountain

2003-11-03 Thread John Gwilliam
Steve and List,

Three or four years ago, Ivan Koutyrev and I were sitting at John
Blennert's kitchen table talking about the possibilities of recovering some
of the Marjalati specimens that had been seen to fall into the
lake. According to Ivan, he had a very reliable source of information
about a large individual that fell into the water not far from
shore. Since Ivan was confident that he knew the location pretty well, I
suggested a large rare earth magnet attached to a long aluminum or plastic
pole. Ivan shook his head repeatedly and said it was a bad
idea. Finally,he drew me a picture. It showed the surface of the water
with a boat floating on it, a stick man with a long pole, and the bottom of
the lake. Along the bottom he had drawn several bombs!

Later, Ivan and his intrepid partner, Vladimir, made a trip to the lake
with some ancient scuba gear. Since neither of then had any experience
with diving, Ivan decide to stay in the boat and let Vladimir do the
diving(the brains of the operation '-)). Vladimir put on the gear, tied a
rope to himself and went into the water carrying a waterproof metal detector.

I wish I could have seen pictures of this diving equipment they
used. There are several experienced divers on the list including Gregory
Wilson, Dean Bessey and myself, and we all know that diving with
questionable, old equipment is courting disaster. All of my diving was
done with the aid of a computer that told me how long I'd been down, how
much air I had left, and how much longer I could dive that day without
risking getting bent. Getting bent, or the bends is the result of
staying submerged too long and absorbing nitrogen into your
bloodstream. When you come to the surface, the nitrogen molecules expand
causing extreme pain and sometimes even death.

Vladimir's air tank didn't even have a pressure gauge on it - he had no way
of knowing when he was running low on air.

His first clue that he was out of air was when he tried to take a breath
and nothing happened. Up on top, Ivan had been watching the regular plume
of bubbles coming to the surface. After a while he noticed the bubbles had
stopped. Pulling on the rope brought a blue-faced Vladimir to the surface
where he gasped for air for quite some time before he was strong enough to
climb into the boat.

No, they didn't find any of the illusive pallasite...but oh...what an
adventure!

Best,

John Gwilliam

Marjahlati does have fusion crust, but it is much blacker than what I have
seen on Glorieta. The main mass of Marjahlati was broken on impact and
the main piece sat outside of the Russian Academy for years and was picked
at for its olivine crystals.

These crystals were used as a standard for olivine, at least that is what
I was told.

Now, Marjahlati has two types of olivine. Gem quality and the powder
type, like Imilac. The two meteorites, though different isotopic ally
appear to be structurally related. For years, the powdered olivines of
Imilac were interpreted as weathered olivine

I don't think so, I think that though weathering has occurred the
structure of Marjahlati does have similar shattered olivines.

These in flight and breakup often get scooped out so that pieces fall that
have no olivine remaining.

In the case of Marjahlati it was reported that the main mass, the only one
recovered, fell on a granite outcrop and was shattered, but hoards of
people that were bathing on the lake shore reported that the water off
shore was peppered with numerous splashes from falling meteorites.

Who knows how many pallasites are on the lake bottom But the problem
now is that that lake was the site of major battles during WWII. There
could be huge numbers of shells and bombs there now, as during the war, I
think that the lake was a route for supplies to bolster Leningrad. It
was bombed repeatedly by the NAZI's during the months that the ice was
thick enough to allow the supply lines to go over it.

So, if this is true... I would not venture to search for meteorites there.

As for the olivine, in pallasites, I have noticed, especially with
Glorieta that if they develop a crust it is usually black from the melt of
the iron that surrounds them. I have not seen any olivines with their own
unique fusion crust. It could be that they simply fracture under heat,
until nothing is left.

Nininger noted that in Glorieta the thumbprints were often the size of
olivines, and that many of the small irons have these thumbprints

See:
http://www.geocities.com/american_meteorite_survey/GLORIETA.htmlhttp://ww
w.geocities.com/american_meteorite_survey/GLORIETA.html

These thumbprints were according to Nininger, the result of the olivine
being stripped out of the iron during the final phases of the flight.

So where is that olivine now... It is most likely scattered all over the
strewnfield in small grains

List Members,
I've been sitting back quietly watching this thread get over-baked over the
past few days and finally decided I'd step in a make a comment.

In his remarks, Jamie talks about his potential right to publish data
that is extracted from publicly available documents. Personally, I believe
that with this right comes a lot of responsibility.

For example, did you know that if you've ever been a party in a divorce,
arrested and charged with a crime, or been to Tax Court, the written
records of those proceedings are public information? That is, unless the
judge in the case sealed the records, which is rarely done. That means
that I, or someone else, could access all court records involving Meteorite
List members throughout the United States and publish those findings. Now
wouldn't that be lovely? We'd know who the drunk drivers and the wife
beaters were and we could sit in our chairs and snicker about all the nasty
accusations that are part of every divorce trial. No thanks, I don't need
to see it...even if it is publicly available information. You see, there
is no beneficial value in doing so.

Rather, it sounds like a good way to loose a bunch of friends to me.

I don't see any real value to compiling information about Ebay sellers and
purchasers either. Sure, you can figure out what's been selling well and
what hasn't, and you can find out who has been spending the most money on
meteorites lately...so what? Do you contact these buyers and offer to sell
them more meteorites? I'm pretty sure that would be a violation of Ebay
rules.

How many list members are forty-hour-a-week Meteorite Market Analists anyway?

Someone else mentioned something about getting a life. I vote for that.

Best to all...but tired of the thread,

John

Bob and List,
Over the past several years, I've also witnessed rocket launch contrails
from Vandenburg. Most were seen while in Costal Mexico, and the corkscrew
effect caused by high level winds makes for a magnificent display. Us
folks here in Arizona are also treated to occasional early morning launches
from the White Sands Range in New Mexico. These pre-dawn trails are high
enough that they catch the light from the sun and the orange worm trails
in our still dark sky are quite spectacular.

I should check the launch schedule (if it isn't

Re: [meteorite-list] nitric acid disposal

2003-10-17 Thread John Gwilliam
Hello All,
Thanks to Dave Freeman for the acid disposal idea. Here are a few more ideas.
It is very important that you dilute the acid with LOTS of water, a ratio
of 10 parts water to 1 part acid might be a good place to start. The more
water you use, the better. If you add baking soda to undiluted acid, you
will get a near explosive reaction, so MAKE SURE you dilute the acid with
enough water. In addition to wearing eye protection, wear rubber gloves,
old shoes and old long pants. In the event you spill some of the acid
solution, you don't want to ruin your clothes. A rubberized or plastic
apron like the ones sold at lapidary stores is a good idea too.

Another thing. Don't dump an entire container of the baking soda into your
acid solution all at once. Add a little bit at a time to give you an idea
of how much the combination will react and expand.

Best,
John Gwiliam

India. another rainy day, more flooding, lots of

beurocracy and see the meteorites.
I had to go to their version of a state or city hall,
the place in charge of the surrounding area. They are
working on the flood emergency, and told me that over
1000 villages are submerged and so many people dead,
interestingly the Indian Government only reports 17
dead, and according to the locals, it is in the
hundreds.
Anyway, after alot of talking, explaining who I was
and liberal if not quite true use of the word
University, and making formal request letters to see
and photograph the stones, the convened a meeting,
made alot of phone calls, and just at dark I finally
got authorization to go to the finance department and
open the vault and play with the meteorites.
The two stones they still have here are 5.7 kilos and
a 500 gram fragment. They are stored in a large metal
lock box, sealed with cord and then sealed with a wax
stamp to avoid tampering. They do not really know what
they are, and with the government people all demanding
the stones, they have refused to release them to
anyone since they do not understand who they belong
to. It seems that the local and federal government are
about to fight over them.
I got to fully examine them, and took about 40 photos,
but since the sun had set and they had one tiny light
in the building, I dont know how well they will come
out. The large stone was very nicely regmaglypted, but
one side was broken off, and already very badly
weathered only two weeks after the fall. The wet
climate takes it's toll on meteorites fast. The other
piece was from another stone which the villagers had
broken up, and the other pieces have all been taken
already. It is a breccia, like I said nice
slickensides, i could not see many chondrules, but
clearly an H chondrite. There is no possibility of
any acquisition of these pieces, they made a special
file just for me that I opened the box and examined
the stone. It seems that in India, a file is made for
even the slightest thing, as I said, just to see the
stones I had to make a formal letter, get it signed by
about 20 people, and authorized by countless more by
telephone.
The local government people were absolutely fascinated
though. they asked me so many questions, and one of
them thought that this was the first time in history
that a stone had fallen from space, hence the
reluctance to even show them. They were all afraid of
radiation or viruses, and all did not understand why
the stone burned. I explained the super high velocity
is the cause of the fireball and burning, but they
could not comprehend a stone burning because it was
moving so fast.
there was also an armed guard there while I opened the
box!
I was reported to the police by the cheif of the
Suniti village, where the large stone fell, he wanted
me to give him money yesterday so that he could get me
a stone, I refused so I guess he called the state
police today and reported me stealing a large stone,
the police were surprised when I showed up at the
station today, as I could only be the American who was
to be arrested on sight. Of course they laughed it
off, I did not find it quite as ammusing.
Overall, even though the extreme beurocracy is what
seems to stifle the Indian government, they were all
very nice and just wanted to cover their own butts as
it was explained to me.
I doubt I will get any other pieces, so tomorrow is a
tourism day, beach and temples. I saw alot of very
tame monkeys today, ad even fed a few some bananas
from on top of my head! You put a little banana up on
your head, and the monkeys run right up your back and
sit on your head eating away!
I must say, that I appreciate every single day of
travel that meteorites have brought me, even though it
seems I will lose my shirt on this trip, oh well, ill
make it up next time when I get the next fall. I am so

Matteo,

Since you decided to respond to my last post via the List, I'll elaborate
on a few things.

First of all, any of the folks that I referred to having personal knowledge
of your unorthodox and questionable business ethics can speak for
themselves if they so choose. Since my communications with them was
private, I'll not post any of our conversations without their permission or
approval.
Before you began using Paypal, you won one of my meteorites on Ebay. You
emailed me and said you'd be sending me cash in the mail. When you letter
arrived, it contained several U.S. twenty dollar bills. The problem was
that your payment was short twenty dollars. When I contacted you by email
and told you about the shortage, your first claimed I was trying to cheat
you. My reply to you was simple - your payment was short twenty dollars
and the meteorite wouldn't be sent to you until the problem was
corrected. Your next email blamed the problem on the corrupt Italian mail
system. I actually got quite a laugh out of the idea that a crooked
Italian postal clerk would steal just one twenty dollar bill out of
six. To be fair, I will say that you did send the missing twenty dollars
and your meteorite was sent to you.

During a conversation with another dealer, I mentioned the missing twenty
dollars. He commented that this was a standard practice with
you. Checking with a few more folks in the meteorite community, I got
similar responses.

The other incident you refer to in you post is incorrect. It did not
involve a meteorite on Ebay, but was the most recent sale I posted to the
List. The sale, as always, said first come, first served or something
similar to those words. Nowhere did I mention that I would accept
trades. I received an email from you requesting me to put a specimen on
hold for you and would I be interested in doing a trade. I replied no
and you next email to me asked If I would accept delayed payment from you -
somewhere in the time frame of two weeks to a month, I don't remember
exactly. During the time between your emails, someone else contacted me
and said they wanted the specimen and would send payment as soon as I sent
them a total. The way I see it, Matteo, you missed out on getting the
specimen in question because you were too busy trying to negotiate a trade
(which I didn't want) and/or a delay of payment(which I didn't agree
to). During the rest of the day, I received SIX emails from you where you
ranted and raved about injustice...blah, blah, blah.

Same old, same old.

Now if anyone else chooses to share with the List any of their experiences
with you, that's their business. I'd think most of them would want to
avoid your tirades of verbal diarrhea so they'll probably shy away. Like
David Weir, you emails have been filtered out of my system for a long time
now, but you still make you way onto my screen because your emails are
piggybacked on the messages of other List members.

Regards and Regrets to the List,

John Gwilliam

priced, or even affordable run of the mill meteorites as not nearly as
degrading.
Is it the meteorite's choice in falling to hot sands or on a southern
polar ice cap? What meteorite would wish to impact a car, or even a house
so it could be cherished more? Bah! If any meteorite is not worth it's
value, then why ask for any value at all? I too love yard sales but would
not insult a proprietor by offering to take something of value for nothing.

I have, once coined the phrase no-named orphan step child in reference
to unclassified NWA's. At one time, I even publicly endorsed a self ban
on purchasing any meteorite with out a real home until more field data
could have the opportunity to be collected.Even stray puppies need
love and sustenance. The seemingly (and not true) perception of the
abundant / infinite NWA's with (dirt) cheap and junk associations is
not reality, and that perception is, and continues to be, further pain in
many circles. One day, in the future, those with a sence of humor will
muse at this time and hopefully have pause for a chuckle (if they had
purchased at fair value those no-named orphan step children, reasonable
and affordably priced stellar visitors of the hot sand deserts). Indeed,
some NWA's come in a number of packages, some being under the value added
title of Lunar and Martian meteorites.
I would ask of those who would like to aquire NWA's and other hot desert
meteorites with less than debutante status to refrain from asking
dealers publicly to supply them with a source for cheap and junk
anything, especially meteorites, despite their status...or in this case,
lack of.

Junk in, junk out

I still do feel that those wanting to get cheap or junk anything
should alter their direction to collecting marbles as they have in my
opinion, lost a few of their own somewhere along the way.
A buyers willingness to actively participate in an honest and fair value
market exchange directly reflects up on that persons integrity in any
proposed transaction.
Not only does the seller know the value of his wares but the reverse is
true also, the buyer knows the value of what he wishes to purchase.

Sincerely,
Dave Freeman

Re: [meteorite-list] what is selling on my ebay page.

2003-10-03 Thread John Gwilliam
Steve,
If you don't mind, I'd like to make a couple of suggestions. When you
decide to sell some of your meteorites, you should look up the names in one
of the many books available so you can spell them properly. I've seen some
meteorite names misspelled from time to time, but you have absolutely
butchered the name Millbillillie. Also, the names of meteorites should
always start with a capital letter...just like the names of people;-)

Best,

John

Re: [meteorite-list] original rosamond

2003-09-29 Thread John Gwilliam
Hello Steve and List,
Knowing how much time and effort was put into the book, Meteorites fro A
to Z, I feel it is only appropriate to give credit where credit is
due. While Anne Black was indeed a collaborator and contributor the book,
Bill and Mike Jensen were the principle authors.
A recent phone conversation with Mike confirmed that an updated version of
Meteorites from A to Z should be completed in time for the Tucson 2004
Show. Any additions or corrections to the book should be forwarded to the
Jensen Bros. All non-Sahara information should be sent to Mike at:
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Any Sahara related information should go to Bill at:
 [EMAIL PROTECTED].
When I need quick, basic information about a meteorite, I usually find
myself reaching for this book. The new edition will be a great addition to
all of our libraries.

Best,

John Gwilliam

Re: [meteorite-list] Pallasite available?

I agree with Tim (and several other list members) on this one. There are
some Brahin specimens available that are very stable.

The 2193646780 Brahin would be my favorite though
  the 2193484729
Brahin is very nice too. The former looks more

Several months ago I got a nice little QUIJINGUE
(3.5 grams) from AL Mitterling via
Ebay and it is still very stable. Keep your hands
off ADMIRE - it is a rust bucket lest
you take care of it regularly. Esquel and Imilac
slices are quite stable, my Brenham
has been stable for more than 15 years now - others
have had less luck because with
Brenham it depends on whether it is an internal or
an external piece (same thing with
  the Cape York irons).

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Wedding Bands

2003-09-24 Thread John Gwilliam
Good Morning List,
I've had someone who's not a list member contact me concerning meteorite
wedding bands. I remember years ago that Bud Eisler used to make them but
I can't find an active website for Bud.

Anyone with any info about where to find the iron meteorite wedding bands,
please contact me off list.

Best,

John Gwilliam

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite from Jupiter

2003-09-23 Thread John Gwilliam
Michael and List,
After hearing that several of our list members received the same letter,
I'm convinced that this is another case of pure ignorance and nothing
more. If it is a scam, these folks didn't do their homework well enough to
find out that meteorites from Jupiter don't exist.
One of our intrepid list members lives quite close to the senders of this
letter and I have given him their contact information. After he has
visited with Mrs. Cheung, he'll report his experience to the list.

Best,

John

[meteorite-list] Meteorite from Jupiter

2003-09-22 Thread John Gwilliam
Hello List,
In this morning's mail, I received an unusual letter from a Mrs. Cheung in
Alamo, California. The letter says they are contacting me (the recipient
of the letter) for a friend who wants some help selling some meteorites in
her possession. It goes on to say that some of the stones have already
been identified as meteorites by the Bishop Museum in Honolulu.

They list five different samples that have been identified by the museum
and they list densities for the specimens but no weights.

Here is the interesting information in the letter.

In addition to the samples she has given us some photographs of the
meteorites. During a conversation with her, one of the meteorites was
identified as coming from the planet Jupiter.

Imagine that, a meteorite from Jupiter!

If anyone wants to pursue this, let me know and I'll give you the contact
information;-)

Best,

John Gwilliam
